Russell Martin may be gone, but there is no change in fortunes for Rangers and the Ibrox masses.
On Saturday, the Gers failed to win in the Scottish Premiership yet again, this time held to a 2-2 draw, their sixth of the campaign.
Thelo Aasgaard broke the deadlock in sensational fashion for Rangers, but they required a late equaliser from James Tavernier to pinch a point in Govan.
This means, remarkably, the Light Blues have still only won one of eight Premiership matches to date, currently sixth in the table, a whopping 13 points adrift runaway league-leaders Hearts.
Martin was dismissed following the underwhelming 1-1 draw at Falkirk a fortnight ago, but no permanent successor has yet been found, U19s coach Steven Smith in interim charge for the foreseeable future, but when the new boss does belatedly arrive, could that be bad news for one of Martin’s summer signings in particular?
The latest on Rangers' search for a new manager
During the international break, Rangers were seemingly turned down by their top two managerial targets.
First, Steven Gerrard rejected the opportunity to return to Ibrox, following talks with the club, before former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Röhl also pulled out of the running.
As a result, Kevin Muscat became the front-runner to take the job; he made 26 appearances for the club during the 2002/03 season as Alex McLeish’s team won the treble.
Since becoming a coach himself, he began at A-League side Melbourne Victory, overseeing 200 matches, winning four major trophies, including two grand final titles.
He then endured a very brief stint in charge of Sint-Truidense, before succeeding a certain Ange Postecoglou as Yokohama F. Marinos manager, winning the J1 League title, as well as the Japanese Super Cup.
Manager Focus
Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast’s Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.
Since December 2023, he has been in charge of Shanghai Port, adding a Chinese Super League and FA Cup double to his roll of honours in 2024.
Yet, despite it looking as though a deal had been agreed, it was reported on Sunday evening by journalist Ben Jacobs that the Muscat move “is now off”. Subsequent reports indicate that the aforementioned Rohl has entered the frame again.
Whoever the new manager is, whether it be Rohl or not, one of Russell Martin’s summer signings should be feeling the heat.
Rangers flop on borrowed time under a new manager
Rangers made a whopping 13 new signings this summer, the majority of whom have massively underwhelmed.
Youssef Chermiti, Aasgaard, Joe Rothwell and Emmanuel Fernandez and others have, to date, not justified their transfer fees, while young loanee Jayden Meghoma has appeared out of his depth.
The left-back arrived on a season-long loan from Brentford, having made only four appearances for the Bees, as well as just four for Southampton and 14 in Preston North End colours, underlining his inexperience.
Thus, it should come as no surprise that he has struggled to make an impact in Glasgow.

As outlined, Meghoma has been a regular starter for Rangers this season, named in the lineup for ten of the 11 matches since his debut, the draw with Falkirk, which proved to be Martin’s final match in charge, the sole exception.
Some of his statistics are impressive, most notably tackles, but the possession lost tells the story, with the teenager continuing to be a weak link in the Rangers back line.
He was once again poor in the draw with Dundee United, failing to complete a single tackle, winning only four of his nine duels and losing possession 17 times for good measure.
Thus, if and when a new manager is appointed, he’ll surely prioritise experience at the back, thereby shifting Max Aarons over to the left or asking Derek Cornelius to fill in there, with Meghoma a leading candidate to be cast aside.
Martin once claimed that he has “big potential” but ultimately, we’re yet to see that in Glasgow. Interim manager, Steven Smith, must drop him next time out.

David Alaba has rejoined Real Madrid group training and is expected to be in the squad for Sunday's La Liga match against Rayo Vallecano, providing a major boost for Xabi Alonso. The defender returns from a calf injury that has seen him miss four games, as the club continues to cope with injuries to Antonio Rudiger, Dani Carvajal and Aurelien Tchouameni.
Alaba's return provides crucial defensive relief
Madrid have received a significant defensive boost as Alaba has rejoined group training and is poised to make his return to the squad for match against Vallecano, according to a report from .
The 33-year-old defender's return provides a timely solution for manager, whose squad has been severely depleted by injuries, particularly in defence.
Alaba participated in the majority of group exercises during Friday's training session at Valdebebas, with the outlook for his recovery described as "very positive." The Austrian international is expected to complete Saturday's final session without issue and be named in Alonso's squad for the trip to Vallecas.
The comeback of the experienced centre-back is a critical development for Real Madrid, who are facing an injury crisis in their backline. Alonso remains without four key players for the upcoming league fixture.
The injury list includes starting right-back Carvajal and fellow centre-back Rudiger, whose absence has compounded Madrid's defensive woes.
Furthermore, the club is without key defensive midfielder Tchouameni, who was the latest player to be sidelined. The Frenchman is suffering from a semitendinosus muscle injury in his left leg and is not expected to reappear until after the upcoming international break. His target is reportedly the match against Elche on November 23. Youngster Franco Mastantuono also remains unavailable.
Alaba has been sidelined for Madrid's last four matches after sustaining a strain in his right calf muscle, identified as a soleus injury. The setback occurred at the end of the first half of the club's league match against Getafe on 19 October.
His injury, coinciding with Rudiger's spell on the treatment table, forced Alonso to field a makeshift defensive partnership. The manager has had to consolidate a centre-back pairing of Eder Militao and 20-year-old summer signing Dean Huijsen.
This pairing was further disrupted during Alaba's absence, with Spanish international Huijsen also missing the Champions League match against Juventus, highlighting the precarious lack of depth Alonso has been navigating.
A difficult start to the 2025-26 season
The injury has been a frustrating interruption for Alaba, who has had a limited impact on the 2025-26 campaign. The defender, whose contract expires in 2026, has struggled for consistent fitness and game time.
Prior to his injury, the Austrian had featured in only four matches for Madrid this season, accumulating just 145 minutes of playing time.
His involvement has been sporadic, receiving minutes from the bench against Real Sociedad and Levante in La Liga, and making one start on the second matchday of the Champions League in Almaty.
His return to fitness is therefore crucial not only for the team's immediate needs but also for Alaba himself as he looks to re-establish his role as a cornerstone of the Madrid defence.

AFPWhat next? Vallecas test and historic Austria call-up
Provided he passes Saturday's final fitness test, Alaba will be in line for minutes in Sunday's La Liga encounter at Vallecas. Following the match against Rayo Vallecano, Alaba's immediate focus will shift to international duty. The defender has been called up by manager Ralf Rangnick for a potentially huge international break for Austria.
The Austrian national team are on the verge of securing qualification for the next World Cup, an achievement they have not managed in 28 years. The country's last appearance at the tournament was in 1998 when it was held in France.
Austria will face Cyprus on Saturday, November 15, before a match against Bosnia-Herzegovina the following Tuesday evening. Alaba's return to fitness will be a welcome sight for Rangnick, who will rely on his captain's leadership and experience as his side attempts to make history.
Hale End continues to be an invaluable talent factor for Arsenal.
Right now, Bukayo Saka, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Ethan Nwaneri and the returning Eberechi Eze are all key figures in Mikel Arteta’s first team, while Saturday’s trip to Fulham was a reminder of departed Hale End graduates, given that Alex Iwobi and Emile Smith Rowe were in action for the hosts at Craven Cottage.
Given the sheer volume of academy graduates now plying their trade far and wide, there will be one or two Arsenal may regret allowing to leave, one in particular is starting to showcase his talent this season, having once been compared to the Hale End poster boy, Saka.
Bukayo Saka's performance in numbers vs Fulham
As Arsenal beat Fulham 1-0 at Craven Cottage on Saturday, Saka was, yet again, named Premier League man of the match.
It was his corner, flicked on by Gabriel and turned home by Leandro Trossard, that proved to be the difference, pinching all three points on the banks of the River Thames.
Overall though, Saka was the Gunners’ most dangerous player throughout the evening.
He was in staggering form, completing seven key passes, six dribbles and being fouled five times. In fact, despite missing three matches due to injury, Saka remains the Gunners’ main man in attack.

As the table outlines, despite limited minutes, Saka continues to be central to Arsenal as an attacking force, ranked first for a whole host of metrics, including goals, big chances created and dribbles.
Appearing for Thomas Tuchel for only the second time, the 24-year-old certainly showcased his talent at Wembley during the international break, scoring that sublime strike as England steamrollered Wales.
Saka joined Arsenal at the age of seven, making 271 appearances for the first team to date, and counting, very much the gold standard Hale End graduate, but is there another, once compared to him, currently impressing elsewhere?
What happened to Arsenal's "Saka regen"
There are plenty of Hale End academy graduates plying their trade away from Arsenal.
The aforementioned Smith Rowe and Iwobi, as well as Michael Olise, Serge Gnabry, Folarin Balogun, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Joe Willock, Héctor Bellerín, Ayden Heaven, Omari Hutchinson and Mika Biereth are among some of the most prominent.
However, few were as highly rated as Amario Cozier-Duberry.
Arsenal youngster Amario Cozier-Duberry
After spending six years at Chettle Court Rangers, he joined Arsenal as a 14-year-old, making 31 appearances for the U18s as well as 48 for the U21s, most notably scoring a brace against PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Youth League, as well as netting against Northampton and Stevenage in the EFL Trophy.
During this period, analyst Ben Mattinson labelled him a “Saka regen”, while Art de Roché of the Athletic noted that his “super-strength is his ball-carrying and ability”, adding that he’s an “exciting” talent.
However, just when he was seemingly on the cusp of a first-team breakthrough, Cozier-Duberry turned down a new contract, instead making the move to Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer of 2024 as Edu and Co were forced to let him go on a free transfer.
Amario Cozier-Duberry for Arsenal.
He is yet to be seen representing the Seagulls at senior level, immediately loaned out to Blackburn Rovers last season, albeit he scored just one goal in 24 outings for the Riversiders, this coming against Luton at Ewood Park in December.
However, a mere 13 miles south across Lancashire, he is loving life rather more at Bolton Wanderers.
Where Are They Now
Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast’s Where Are They Now series.
Already this season, Cozier-Duberry has scored four goals and registered five assists for the Trotters, on target against Sheffield Wednesday, AFC Wimbledon and Leyton Orient, subsequently actually outperforming Saka who has three goals.
Then, on Thursday night, Bolton pulled off one of the most remarkable comebacks you’re ever likely to see, scoring in the 93rd and then 95th minutes to beat Huddersfield Town 2-1, with the youngster’s winner sparking wild celebrations from those in the away end at Kirklees.
Of course, the obvious caveat is that Cozier-Duberry is currently impressing at EFL League One level, which Global Football Rankings believes to be the 41st strongest division in the world.
So, while he would not be a first-team contributor right now, at 20 years old, he still has room to develop and improve, so may end up playing in Brighton’s first team in years to come.
Also, from a more cynical point of view, Arsenal need to get better at selling, and Cozier-Duberry’s performances this season are only going to increase his transfer value, potentially earning Brighton a decent fee, while the Gunners let him leave for nothing during Edu’s mixed time as sporting director, which must sting.
Arsenal star is "biggest talent in England" & he could take Saka's #7 shirt
The incredible Arsenal gem could become Mikel Arteta’s future Bukayo Saka replacement.
In an early blow for the next Rangers manager, one Ibrox star has been handed an exit route to a major European club as soon as the January transfer window opens.
Rangers take key step in manager hunt
It’s been a busy week for Rangers. The Gers brought an end to Russell Martin’s tenure after his side were held to a 1-1 draw by Falkirk in the Scottish Premiership and the full focus has been on their next manager ever since.
A number of names have been mentioned, including Hearts boss Derek McInnes, but Steven Gerrard has remained the favourite. Now, according to Fabrizio Romano, positive talks have been held with the Liverpool legend about a return to Ibrox for the first time since he left for Aston Villa in 2021.
If Rio Ferdinand’s verdict is anything to go by then Gerrard will be delighted to have received the call from the 49ers. The Manchester United legend, who recently interviewed his former rival, told talkSPORT: “I have to say when I interviewed him, he left me in no uncertain terms that he wants to be a manager and he’s got full confidence in doing that.
“He’s itching to get back in now. He never said this to me, but I personally think just the energy that I felt in that room, that if Rangers came calling he’d go or at least have that conversation.”
That said, as excited as he may be to potentially step back into the Ibrox technical area, there’s no doubt that Gerrard will have quite the task on his hands if he takes the job, especially if one player decides to leave.
Besiktas ready to offer Raskin Rangers exit route
As reported by Turkish outlet Aspor and relayed by Sport Witness, Besiktas are now ready to sign Nicolas Raskin as soon as Gerrard potentially arrives. The Belgian rarely saw eye-to-eye with Russell Martin and failed to get his move in the summer, but could now get his way when the winter window arrives.

What sums up the relationship that Raskin had with Martin are the words of his father, who said that the former Rangers boss has an “oversized ego” in a scathing review earlier this season.
Those at Ibrox will hope that the start of a new era will change Raskin’s mind. There’s no doubt that the midfielder has the quality to play an important part in Scotland, having been dubbed “clever” by former Rangers manager Neil McCann last month.
Tottenham hung on to a rather uninspired 0-0 draw away to Monaco in the Champions League on Wednesday, but stellar goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario wasn’t their only shining light in France.
Vicario saves Tottenham with 10/10 display in European stalemate
Without doubt, Spurs’ number one, who’s come under fire recently for his handling of crosses into the box, was Thomas Frank’s saviour against the Ligue 1 side.
Monaco ended the 90 minutes with a whopping 21 shots on goal and threatened to break the deadlock constantly, and if not for Vicario’s heroics in the Lilywhites goal, Spurs would’ve almost certainly tasted their first European defeat of the campaign.
The home side had chance after chance to win the game, and ex-Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun will still be wondering how he didn’t notch at least one strike in the first-half alone.

Alas, Monaco’s nine attempts on target were all saved by Vicario, with the Italian undoubtedly enjoying one of his best games for the club during what was a night to forget overall for the north Londoners.
Spurs were without captain Cristian Romero – one of 10 players unavailable – and Frank again shuffled his pack with £52 million playmaker Xavi Simons only on the bench and Archie Gray surprisingly recalled at left-back.
Gray was quickly involved, blocking an effort by the excellent Maghnes Akliouche before Vicario saved from Balogun, and Tottenham’s makeshift full-back then intercepted Ansu Fati’s pass after a dangerous run.
The visitors threatened for the first time after 20 minutes when Wilson Odobert clipped a ball in for stand-in captain Micky van de Ven, but he could only head over under pressure.
It was then Vicario’s turn to step up as he clawed away a dangerous cross by Akliouche before Balogun peeled off van de Ven, but the Spurs goalkeeper raced out to block bravely.
Seconds later, Odobert slipped in Richarlison, who had a left-footed shot thwarted by Mohammed Salisu.
However, Tottenham were indebted to Vicario again in the 36th minute. Balogun again found space and was picked out by Mamadou Coulibaly, but the Italian keeper brilliantly parried away Balogun’s curled shot from 12 yards.
It remained goalless at the break after Kevin Danso sent over a corner by Kudus – not long after, he headed straight at Philipp Kohn, but he was subsequently penalised for a foul.
Akliouche put Joao Palhinha on his backside at the start of the second half only to scuff his effort straight at Vicario before Odobert cut inside and had a shot deflected over by Kehrer.
Monaco remained on top and Vicario pushed wide a shot by substitute Aleksandr Golovin before he scrambled across his goal and looked mightily relived when Kehrer headed past the post from a Fati cross.
Vicario’s next heroics came in the 75th minute when Caio Henrique’s cross found Jordan Teze and yet his close-range header was superbly blocked by Spurs’ busy goalkeeper.
Takumi Minamino squandered another golden opportunity with seven minutes left when he blazed over from Balogun’s cut-back. When Spurs did finally fashion a chance late on, substitute Brennan Johnson’s effort was blocked by Christian Mawissa, and it finished goalless.
Media praise Wilson Odobert after "best game" for Tottenham against Monaco
While Vicario has grabbed all the headlines with Tottenham’s creativity letting them down yet again, members of the media did lavish Odobert after his fine performance at the Stade Louis II.
The 20-year-old, who was unfortunately forced off through injury midway through the second period, looked like Spurs’ brightest attacking player and created more chances in the first-half than all of his teammates combined.
Odobert earned plaudits as a result of his direct and forward-thinking play in the first period, with the former Burnley star threatening down Spurs’ left-hand side and injecting some much-needed pace into the game at times.
Podcasters Seb Martin, Ben Bowman and Jonny Blain were among the media figures to point this out, while journalists Matt Verri and Jack Pitt-Brooke also found time to praise the Frenchman.
Reporter Mitch Fretton joined in on the act as well, claiming Odobert looked “absolutely excellent” against Monaco, but regrettably for Frank’s side, Vicario and the forward’s performances were as good as it got.
Now, Frank is sweating on the fitness of Odobert, praying that the attacker’s injury isn’t a serious one.
He had just started repaying the Tottenham manager’s faith after four successive starts in all competitions, so a lengthy lay-off would be unbelievable bad luck.
Arsenal have now joined Real Madrid in the race to sign a “powerful” midfielder from a Champions League club, it has been revealed.
Gunners join race for another new midfielder
Mikel Arteta strengthened his squad considerably in the summer transfer window, with Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard arriving to bolster the midfield options, and the Spain international has made a flying start to life in the Premier League.
There have been suggestions that Zubimendi has already established himself as one of the best midfielders in the top flight, having formed a partnership with Declan Rice, with the duo creating three big chances between them in the 4-0 victory over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.
With the likes of Mikel Merino, Eberechi Eze and Martin Odegaard also on the books, Arteta appears to be well-stocked in both defensive and attacking midfield areas, but the north Londoners have now joined the race to sign a Serie A star.
That is according to a report from Spain, which states Arsenal are now monitoring Juventus midfielder Khephren Thuram, who has an asking price of €70m (£61m), amid interest from a number of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Real Madrid and Liverpool are also in the race for Thuram, who has established himself as an important player since arriving at the Serie A club in the summer of 2024, and it could be difficult to get a deal done.

Indeed, considering the midfielder has emerged as an important player and remains under contract until 2029, it could be tricky to tempt Juventus into a sale, but there is certainly interest on the Gunners’ behalf.
"Powerful" Thuram impressing in the Serie A
The France international, who Arteta is a huge fan of, has impressed considerably since returning to the country of his birth, catching the eye with his dribbling skills and ability to score goals and create chances for his teammates over the past year.

Scout Ben Mattinson has also suggested the 24-year-old is a well-rounded midfielder, describing him as “balanced”, while praising the maestro for his “powerful carrying”, “physicality” and “quick feet.”
The Italy-born maestro, who has 13 Champions League appearances to his name, clearly has the talent to succeed at the Emirates Stadium, but there is no pressing need for Arteta to bring in a new midfielder anytime soon.
With Zubimendi showing his class ever since his arrival, Norgaard on the books as a back-up option, and Rice continuing to impress, chipping in with four goal contributions in the Premier League so far this season, the Arsenal boss already has plenty of top-quality options to choose from.

The New England Revolution intend to hire U.S. U20 manager Marko Mitrovic as their next coach, according to The Athletic. Mitrovic is fresh off a U20 World Cup run, as his team impressed in the group stage before falling short against eventual champion Morocco in the quarterfinals. He also coached the U23 squad at last year's Olympics in Paris.

Focus on youth development
Mitrovic's arrival would end a search that started in September after the Revs dismissed Caleb Porter. The Athletic also reports that Mitrovic is eager to tap into the club's well-known academy, which has produced the likes of Noel Buck and Esmir Bajraktarević. He has also worked with the Revs' 17-year-old defender Peyton Miller while coaching the U20s.
Former Vancouver Whitecaps manager Vanni Sartini and ex-Austin FC coach Josh Wolff were reportedly among the finalists. When contacted by GOAL, the Revs would neither confirm nor deny the report.

Mitrovic's experience working for two youth national teams could help with further developing some of the Revs' emerging talent, but there are a few strong first team players also on the squad.

File photo – Rubin Hermann top scored with 45 on his T20I debut•SA20
Most batters would be satisfied with top-scoring in their first international match, especially if their team went on to win the game. Rubin Hermann, who made 45 in South Africa’s winning chase of 142 against Zimbabwe, was not.”I was a bit more irritated that I left 12 runs on the table before I could actually shake hands with the guys and say I’ll pull the stumps out and end this game,” Hermann said at the post-match conference. That was effectively my role – just to be there at the end. So I was disappointed I couldn’t do that but maybe I am just nitpicking. Probably anyone would have taken that. But I want to be a guy to win games for South Africa, and I should have been there at the end.”Related

More irritated because he was actually asked if he was disappointed that he didn’t get a half-century in his maiden outing but, as has been the theme for South Africa on this tour, the landmark didn’t matter as much as collective cause. “It’s disappointing to fall five runs short of a milestone but that’s just an added bonus,” Hermann said. “It’s not a focus of mine to maybe have personal achievements in that regard.”His words echo those of stand-in Test captain Wiaan Mulder, who last week declared South Africa’s innings closed on 626 for 5 in the second Test. He was on 367*, 34 runs away from breaking Brian Lara’s world-record as the player with the highest individual Test score. Afterwards, Mulder explained that he felt the record should be, “left to the legends,” and he stuck to that line even when he revealed that Lara himself later told him he should have gone on to better Lara’s score of 400. Mulder’s broader explanation was about putting the team’s goals before his own and that seems to be the South African way under Shukri Conrad, who has taken over all formats.Hermann said he has “fit into the environment quite easily,” and understands exactly what is expected of him. “It’s a holistic picture coming from the Proteas all the way down to domestic cricketers, which made the step up a lot better, because I knew what I did to get me here was what they’re looking for,” he said. “It’s not a situation where you have to go and impress anyone, you just have to be yourself because they’ve selected you for you and because you fit the brand they want to play.”In Hermann, who finished fifth on the overall SA20 run-scorers’ list earlier this year, where he played for the Paarl Royals, South Africa are looking for an attacking top-order player who also has the ability to rebuild an innings. Hermann found himself doing that on occasion for the Royals, especially in situations where Lhuan-dre Pretorius did not come off and once Joe Root had left the campaign. His experience in that tournament helped him when he found himself called on with South Africa 17 for 2 against Zimbabwe and in need of stabilising.”I was quite fortunately, or unfortunately possibly, in that role quite a lot in SA20, so I’m quite comfortable playing that role. I really do enjoy the pressure situations where we have to take control of the game again, and I was glad I could do it again today,” he said. “I know if I just give myself a chance, I’ll catch up with my strike rates in any game.”Hermann had 17 runs from the first 20 balls he faced, which included a four and a six, but then went on to take a hat-trick of fours off Wellington Masakadza. He had 30 from 25 balls and finished on 45 from 37 balls, a strike-rate of 121.62. By the time he was dismissed, South Africa were two shots away from victory, which speaks to the way in which he changed the complexion of the innings. Instead of seeing himself as being under scrutiny to perform, he analysed the situation as an opportunity to show what he can do.”It’s an absolute pleasure and privilege. I don’t see any tournament or any innings I play now as pressure. Obviously there’s expectation, but expectation and pressure are two different things,” he said. “There’s always expectation to perform and obviously it’s just more highlighted here. “I’ve had a longer journey than most. I’m very thankful because it built certain characteristics in my game and maybe some mental resilience that will stand me in good stead. This is the first step. I hope there’s another couple more steps to go and I can have a decently long career playing for South Africa.”At 28, Hermann has been active in the South African domestic system for the last eight years and has played for three different teams – Northerns (and the Titans), Mpumalanga and North West. He had his breakthrough season with the Paarl Royals, where he averaged 41.62 and is now among the national plans as South Africa build towards the 2026 T20 World Cup.
