Nightwatchman Gadekar bats through day three for Goa

Scorecard

‘I focused more on defence’ – Gadekar

Harshad Gadekar was an opening batsman for his school in Mapusa before a regional coach of Goa Cricket Association pointed out he had more potential as a bowler. But when the opportunity to bat a long time came his way, when he was sent in as nightwatchman on the second day of Goa’s Ranji Trophy Group C game against Maharashtra, he grabbed it with both hands.
“I didn’t even think about what my score was. I was given a role – to occupy the crease for as long as I could and I concentrated on doing just that,” Gadekar said. “I focused more on defending as many balls as I could rather than leaving them and once I was confident of surviving, I knew they [the Maharashtra bowlers] would get irritated and start trying too many things and give me loose balls. That’s exactly what happened and I could score my runs.”
Despite batting out the whole day, Gadekar was disappointed that Goa lost five wickets before stumps, thus putting them right on the backfoot. “It is not an ideal situation for us but [on day four] we would like to bat out the first session and then take it from there,” he said. “I am not thinking about my hundred or anything like that. I just want to continue batting for as long as I can.”

Nightwatchman Harshad Gadekar put up stubborn resistance and frustrated the Maharashtra bowlers by batting out the whole of third day, in the Ranji Trophy Group C game in Pune. Despite Gadekar’s unbeaten 86 and his 151-run partnership for the third wicket with Sagun Kamat though, Goa still had their backs to the wall, ending the day at 297 for 5, chasing Maharashtra’s first-innings score of 635.On a pitch that offered virtually no help for bowlers for the third day in succession, Gadekar displayed the grit required of a top-order batsman. Though his strokemaking was scratchy, he blocked and blocked all through the day to come up with a largely chanceless knock.Gadekar was sent in on the second evening with six overs remaining in the day’s play, and had faced 374 balls in his 17 previous innings in first-class cricket. By the end of the penultimate day’s play, he had faced 294 balls in this innings, going well past his previous best of 20 and being on the verge of a rare century by a nightwatchman. While Gadekar focused on holding one end up, Kamat, who took the crease after Swapnil Asnodkar nicked Domnic Joseph behind in the first hour, was the pick of the batsmen.A left-hand batsman, Kamat displayed his wide range of strokes, cutting pacers and driving the left-arm spin duo of Akshay Darekar and debutant Pushkaraj Chavan with ease. Kamat was fortunate twice in his innings – first he was dropped by Joseph at point off Shrikant Mundhe. Then, just before he missed a straight delivery by Joseph in the 11th over, after the new ball was taken, Kamat was trapped in front of the stumps but Mundhe had overstepped.By the time he was dismissed, Kamat and Gadekar had recorded Goa’s highest partnership for any wicket against Maharashtra, going past Vaibhav Naikand Saurabh Bandekar’s 136-run association at Porvorim two seasons ago.The Maharashtra bowlers tightened things up soon after they got the much-needed breakthrough early on in the last session. They were aided by poor strokemaking from Goa’s specialist batsmen, who failed to take a cue from Gadekar. If Reagan Pinto was guilty of mistiming a pull shot off Mundhe to offer Vijay Zol a catch at square leg, captain Ravikant Shukla played the worst shot of the day. The left-hand batsman tried to play a lofted drive on the up off Darekar and mistimed it badly; it lobbed into Zol’s hands in the covers.Gadekar then saw off the remaining 14 overs without any further damage, thus ensuring that the Maharashtra camp will be a bit uneasy about the nightwatchman going into the final day.

Injured Smith out of Champions Trophy

South Africa’s Graeme Smith will miss the Champions Trophy in England next month, because of the flaring up of a long-term ankle injury that will require surgery*.Smith had scans in London on the ankle on Wednesday and Surrey announced that he would return home to South Africa immediately to undergo an operation. South Africa are set to feature in the opening fixture of the Champions Trophy, against India on June 6, in just over four weeks’ time.Cricket South Africa confirmed in a release on Thursday morning that Smith will miss the tournament. “Graeme has been troubled by left ankle pain over the last few months and despite extensive treatment and physiotherapy, it has recently deteriorated significantly while playing for Surrey in England. Surgery will be required, and he has been advised to follow a rest and rehabilitation programme over the next four to six months,” team manager Dr Mohammed Moosajee, was quoted as saying in the release. “This unfortunately rules him out of the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy in England and Wales and the Selectors will name a replacement in due course.”Smith said: “It’s a big blow for me personally to be missing out on the Champions Trophy next month. Our ODI squad is creating something special and I was looking forward to being part of that family.”Titans opening batsmen Henry Davids and Lions youngster Quinton de Kock are the likeliest candidates to replace Smith in the ODI squad. It is a second setback for South Africa, as they are also without Jacques Kallis for the tournament, after the allrounder had opted to skip it due to personal reasons. On having to cut his county stint short, Smith said: “To have to head home now, so early in my time at Surrey is very frustrating but I leave the team in a good place and hope to be back with them as soon as possible.”Smith is contracted for three years and, although Surrey are resigned to the fact that his brief tenure as captain is already at an end for this season, they are confident he will return in 2014. He will not play against Durham in the Championship match beginning at The Oval on Friday and leaves Surrey in the bottom two of the first division.Surrey’s team director, Chris Adams, said: “Graeme has made an impressive start as a leader and the squad have really responded to his leadership. It’s clearly disappointing for all, especially Graeme, but we wish him a speedy recovery.”Smith missed South Africa’s fifth ODI against Pakistan in Benoni at the end of March and at the time Moosajee had referred to a “chronic left ankle problem”.He added: “We have been trying to manage him but unfortunately the impingement syndrome slowed him down today and he is quite symptomatic. He has had surgery on this ankle a while ago and I think the load and the volume of cricket for the year, and particularly during this ODI series, has troubled him.”Nevertheless, Smith, who described his ankle problem as “an ongoing problem”, honoured his contract with Surrey, aware that he was regarded as a prestigious signing who could bring stability to the club following a traumatic period brought about by the death on the London underground of their England Lions batsman Tom Maynard.Ricky Ponting, the former Australia captain, has already been signed as Smith’s replacement, but he was not scheduled to arrive until the start of the Champions Trophy and will see out his IPL contract with Mumbai Indians.*05.50GMT, May 9: This article has been updated after CSA confirmed Graeme Smith will miss the Champions Trophy

India threaten pull-out over DRS

India have again struck down the latest attempt to bring more consistency to the implementation of the DRS

Nagraj Gollapudi31-Jan-2013India have again struck down the latest attempt to bring more consistency to the implementation of the DRS by threatening to pull out of any tour in which the host country insisted on using the technology. At the ICC executive meeting in Dubai the ECB, represented by chairman Giles Clarke, was the only board that spoke in favour of a policy change where the approval of the host country would be enough to implement the DRS. N Srinivasan, the BCCI chief, shot down the proposal and ESPNcricinfo understands that the remaining boards did not make a stand.Srinivasan’s concerns are understood to still centre on a belief that the technology could be easily manipulated and is unreliable. It has been learnt that he made the claim that India would pull out of bilateral series if a system was in place where the home side could insist on the DRS.Though the DRS issue was not even listed on the agenda, or in the post-meeting press release dispatched, it was discussed at length in the wake of a renewed push during the ICC chief executives committee (CEC) meeting last month, for universal implementation of the referral system. At that meeting, held on December 4, every member with the exception of India had backed a change in the DRS implementation policy. The existing playing conditions require the approval of both countries on DRS during a bilateral series, but the CEC suggested a change in policy that would see the home board having the right to choose the use of the DRS regardless of what the opposition wanted. The CEC recommended that the issue should be resolved via a vote during the executive board meeting. In the end there was no vote as most of 13-man strong board (10 Full Members plus three Associates) failed to stand up to Srinivasan. Only Clarke, who supported the CEC recommendation, felt it warranted a discussion this week again. This is not the first time the BCCI has opposed the rest of the members on the DRS. At the ICC’s last annual conference in Kuala Lumpur, the CEC had passed the resolution to make the DRS mandatory for all events. The move was then passed to the executive board which had to ratify the decision. But despite the push from the CECs, the head of the Full Member boards refrained from putting the issue to vote.

Strikers clamber out of a hole

Johannesburg October 23) – The Highveld Strikers dug themselves out ofa very deep hole to force a draw with Griqualand West on the final day oftheir four-day Supersport Series match at the Wanderers on Monday.Set a target of 427 declared, the Strikers were bowled out for 184 in their first innings, highlighted only by the 94 from Sven Koenig. But a far better batting display in the follow-on enabled the home team to snatch the draw.Koenig got the innings off to a solid start with his 108. But it was a few niggling partnerships lower down the batting order that really stumped Griquas.Nic Pothas combined with Geoffrey Toyana in a sixth-wicket stand that yelded 50 runs.Ottis Gibson and Solly Ndima weighed in with a valuable 53-run partnership for the eighth wicket as the Strikers began building a lead. And literally the last straw for Martyn Gidley’s Griquas was the Strikers’ last wicket stand of 43 by Mulligan George and David Terbrugge. That partnership helped the Strikers to a lead of 141 runs and with 17 overs left for the day.It set up what would have been an exciting chase by Griquas, but Gidley declined the offer. The Griquas skipper made the questionable decision not to chase, settling on the draw with a surprised Striker’s captain Clive Eksteen.”I was surprised that they didn’t want to have a go of it because I didn’t see us bowling them out in 17 overs. Generally, you would want to see positive cricket. But they obviously felt they weren’t up to the challenge,” Eksteen said. But Gidley defended his decision.”The guys were really tired and it would’ve been a tough ask against their bowling attack and on a pitch that was getting more variable.”But it was a fantastic effort by the team. It would’ve been nice to win. There is the thought that perhaps this was our best chance of an away win, and it’s fair to ask why we didn’t chase. But I really think it would’ve been difficult against their bowling attack,” he said. For Eksteen, there was probably some sense of a let-off.”Our discipline was really poor at the start of this match. We bowled poorly in the first innings and that put us under pressure. But it was a case of rectifying that, and it was good to see the guys fight their way back into this game.”

Late surge not enough for Hampshire

Hampshire are still without a victory in this year’s Friends Life t20 after suffering a three-run defeat to Kent under floodlights

22-Jun-2012
ScorecardHampshire are still without a victory in this year’s Friends Life t20 after suffering a three-run defeat to Kent under floodlights. Winners in 2010 and beaten semi-finalists last season, Hampshire fell narrowly short of Kent’s 151 for 5 despite a furious 18-run assault off the penultimate over.Kent’s win owed much to Sam Northeast, whose unbeaten 46 off 32 balls in the second phase of the innings gave the visitors a competitive total. Kent’s progress had been subdued until then, with only 56 runs on the board at the mid-point.Sam Billings (22) provided early promise but Dimitri Mascarenhas and Chris Wood bowled effectively, preventing either Azhar Mahmood or Darren Stevens from imposing themselves. The pair broke the shackles by plundering 17 runs off the first over of left-arm spin by Danny Briggs but were dismissed within three runs of each other to leave Kent 78 for 4.Brendan Nash and Northeast eventually got the scoreboard moving, with 41 runs coming off five overs. Northeast, with a six and six fours in his 46 not out, and Matt Coles plundered 36 runs off the final two overs to leave Hampshire with a more difficult run chase than they might earlier have envisaged.Hampshire’s response was brisk and positive – Kent spilling three regulation catches as Jimmy Adams and Michael Carberry put on 51 in six overs. The scoring rate then dipped but Hampshire remained on course at 73 for 1 after 10 overs. However, James Tredwell, who traveled to the match after the one-day international at Headingley was abandoned, and Mark Davies culled Hampshire’s progress, with a crucial six-over spell yielding only 26 runs.Hampshire were left needing to score at almost 10 an over in the closing stages and 37 runs off the final two overs. Australian Glenn Maxwell and former South Africa Test batsman Neil McKenzie cracked 18 runs off the penultimate over from Mahmood. It left Hampshire needing another 18 to win it off Matt Coles’ 20th over – a task that proved just beyond them as the Royals fell short

Lyon to play, Australia drop Forrest

ESPNcricinfo’s preview of the third ODI between West Indies and Australia in St Vincent

The Preview by Brydon Coverdale20-Mar-2012Match factsSunil Narine has been a tricky customer for Australia to handle in the first two games•Associated Press

March 20, Arnos Vale
Start time 0930 (1330 GMT)Big PictureIf there were any doubts about how much Sunday’s win meant to West Indies, who had not beaten Australia in an ODI since 2006, consider the reaction of the prime minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines. Ralph Gonsalves, who has been in the crowd during the first two games, declared Tuesday a public holiday and as a result, the third match had already sold out by Monday. If West Indies can parlay that support into another victory, they will have a 2-1 series lead ahead of the final two games in St Lucia, and will have a terrific chance to beat Australia in a one-day series for the first time since 1995.To avoid that scenario, Australia need more from their batsmen, especially given they have weakened their batting depth by leaving Peter Forrest out to accommodate the offspinner Nathan Lyon. In the first two matches they had nine scores above 20 but no batsman has managed a half-century. That is not easy on a slow pitch, but they must find a way, especially if they have their full allotment of overs to bat. They scored at less than four an over in the second match and only marginally above that in the first game, and finding a way to handle the spin of Sunil Narine will be one of their major challenges.West Indies have also been bereft of half-century makers in this series but Kieron Pollard was well on the way to one when the winning runs arrived on Sunday. Their batsmen played poorly in the first match and the task is to make sure Sunday’s efforts are repeated in this game, not the batting from the opening encounter.Form guide(Most recent first)
West Indies WLLLW
Australia LWWLWIn the spotlightSunil Narine’s 4 for 27 on Sunday was the second-best analysis ever recorded by a West Indies spinner in an ODI against Australia. Only Chris Gayle has bettered those figures, when he took 5 for 46 in Antigua in 2003. Narine’s changes of pace and flight, and the variety of spin in his armoury make him a difficult proposition in one-day cricket. Further success in this series will also boost his chances of a call-up for the Test matches that follow.Clint McKay doesn’t draw the headlines like some of his team-mates but he has made himself an important part of Australia’s one-day side, filling a Nathan Bracken-style role. His changes of pace are challenging in the 50-over format and his variety and accuracy makes him well suited to the slower Arnos Vale pitch. Almost inconspicuously, McKay has put himself in a position to reach 50 ODI wickets quicker than most Australians. He has 47, and is about to play his 26th ODI. Dennis Lillee reached the mark in 24 matches and Shane Warne in 25, and should McKay get there this game he will be equal third-fastest with Len Pascoe, who took 26 games.Team newsWest Indies will be reluctant to alter a winning side, with changes more likely ahead of the fourth and fifth matches when the teams move on to a new venue.West Indies (possible) 1 Kieran Powell, 2 Johnson Charles, 3 Marlon Samuels, 4 Darren Bravo, 5 Dwayne Bravo, 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Andre Russell, 8 Carlton Baugh (wk), 9 Darren Sammy (capt), 10 Sunil Narine, 11 Kemar Roach.Australia have announced their side and there will be one change, the inclusion of the offspinner Lyon at the expense of the batsman Forrest. Lyon should enjoy working on the slow Arnos Vale pitch, where Sunil Narine was so difficult for the Australians to handle in the second match.Australia 1 David Warner, 2 Shane Watson (capt), 3 Matthew Wade (wk), 4 Michael Hussey, 5 David Hussey, 6 George Bailey, 7 Daniel Christian, 8 Brett Lee, 9 Clint McKay, 10 Xavier Doherty, 11 Nathan Lyon.Pitch and conditionsThe slow Arnos Value surface has proved difficult for batsmen over the past two matches and the same is expected in this third game. Thunderstorms have been forecast, so the sides might face another abridged contest.Stats and trivia Sunday’s victory was the first time West Indies had beaten Australia in an ODI in 14 matches, stretching back to the 2006 Champions Trophy Excluding matches where they have been bowled out, Australia’s run-rate of 3.85 on Sunday was their lowest in an ODI in four yearsQuotes”We have shown that we can win and now the aim is to repeat the performance.”
“The conditions make it a little bit more difficult [for batsmen]. You’re definitely never in.”
