Liverpool fans love Gomez and Keita update

A number of Liverpool supporters are delighted after journalist Neil Jones confirmed that Joe Gomez and Naby Keita are back in training after injuries.

The Reds are in sensational form at the moment, scoring 12 goals in their last three Premier League matches, swatting aside Arsenal, Southampton and Everton in the process.

Jurgen Klopp’s men are arguably playing at the level they reached during the 2019/20 title-winning season, seemingly improving by the game.

A key to Liverpool’s upturn in fortunes has been fewer injuries than last season’s catastrophic situation, with centre-backs fit again and other key players largely being available.

Two men who have been absent in recent weeks are Gomez and Keita, but taking to Twitter on Thursday, Jones stated that the pair are back training and set to play a part in the Reds’ busy December schedule.

Leeds: Harrison’s woes continue vs Spurs

Leeds United’s woes continued as the Yorkshire giants were defeated by Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Sunday evening.

Marcelo Bielsa and his side were already sat just one place above the relegation zone, just two points adrift, but they were unrewarded in a game that they actually looked quite promising in.

The Argentine was without several key stars, with Raphinha (illness) and Rodrigo (injury) surprise absentees, on top of leading talisman Patrick Bamford and vice-captain Luke Ayling.

Spurs failed to even register a shot on target in the first half as the Whites went into the break one goal to the good after Dan James met Jack Harrison’s low-driven cross.

However, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and then Sergio Reguilon found the net for the home side to seal the come-from-behind victory.

Leeds had more possession and more attempts at goal than Spurs, yet a vast majority of these came from outside the area and it’s yet another cause for concern for Bielsa as his side looked hopeless in the final third.

His two wingers may have combined for their only goal – their 12th in as many games, to be precise – but neither pulled up any trees besides that one moment.

Particularly with Harrison as he looked rather lightweight on the left. He lost possession more times (24) than any other visiting player, meaning he handed possession back to Spurs once every 2.75 minutes across the whole game.

Furthermore, he failed with his six other crosses, managing an accuracy rate of just 14% and similarly, a passing accuracy of 78% was the second-worst of any outfield starter, as per SofaScore.

The former Man City graduate also appeared to be weak in his battles, winning just 27% of his 15 battles, which suggests that, more often than not, he struggled up against Emerson Royal and the home back-three.

On social media, it was 59th-minute substitute Junior Firpo that received plenty of flak from supporters, but given he was thrown on in difficult circumstances and was tasked with defensive duties, rather than forward ones, he cannot garner much of the blame.

Yes, Harrison got the assist for their opener but aside from that, he struggled to combat the Lilywhites’ physical threat and he was rather wasteful too.

The £60k-per-week dynamo could’ve made an even bigger impact had he replicated his actions in the 44th minute with more consistency throughout the game and as such, he will have disappointed Bielsa to not have delivered more.

Rangers: GVB must unleash Bacuna

Rangers are set to play their final match in the group stages of the Europa League tonight after Giovani van Bronkhorst’s Ibrox giants qualifyed for the knockout stages in their last game.

The Dutchman’s side sealed their place in the last 32 with a 2-0 win over Sparta Prague and now face Lyon in France in what is essentially a dead-rubber tie for both teams.

This means that the 43-year-old Gers boss could use this match as a chance to take a closer look at his squad and try out new players and combinations on the pitch.

Game-changer

One player who should be given an opportunity to impress the Dutchman is central midfielder Juninho Bacuna, who joined from Huddersfield in the summer.

Van Bronckhorst must unleash the Curaçao international as he has the potential to be a game-changer for the club and this match could provide him with valuable minutes to get him back up to speed. He has only made one appearance since the ey-Feyenoord boss arrived at the club and may need game time before being able to play to the maximum of his abilities.

His only display for the new coach was an impressive one as he caught the eye off the bench against Dundee in the Premiership last weekend. As per SofaScore, he won four of his four duels on the pitch, completed all three of his attempted dribbles and created one chance in just ten minutes of action.

This highlights the level of quality he can potentially bring to Rangers, with his ability to take players on with the ball before creating openings for others all whilst competing on the physical side of the game. He can change a match with his play in the final third, as his dribbling and playmaking can make things happen for the Gers.

Ex-Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard hailed him as a ‘powerful boy’ earlier this year, explaining what he can add to the squad. The retired midfielder said:

“He is a really big talent, everyone should be really excited and really looking forward to seeing him play.

“We have to be patient with him, but he just needs the right support around him, the right environment to keep progressing and growing and I believe we have got the right staff and the right players in the dressing room for that.

“He is an attacking midfielder, he has got good range of passing and he is a powerful boy so he has got a lot of tools in his locker so if he can put everything around that and we can give him the right place to evolve then he should be a big player for this club.”

The £17k-per-week gem also started in a 4-2 win over Ross County earlier this season and picked up a goal and an assist from midfield, whilst winning seven of his 13 duels. This further illustrates his potential to be a game-changer for Rangers and why van Bronckhorst must unleash him against Lyon.

Noffke sees off big fright on opening night

Ashley Noffke was responsible for defeating Queensland in his first game for Western Australia

Cricinfo staff11-Oct-2009
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Ashley Noffke troubled his old team with bat and ball•Western Australian Cricket AssociationAshley Noffke moved from Queensland because he wasn’t a first-choice limited-overs player, but he was responsible for defeating them on his Western Australia debut. Noffke, the Man of the Match, stayed calm following a mid-innings collapse that left the hosts 6 for 83 chasing 161 in the FR Cup season-opener and steered them home with 43.Western Australia started with thoughts of a bonus point against the defending champions, but were held back by the first-gamers Ben Cutting and Alister McDermott, who gained two wickets each. The Warriors lost 5 for 33 before Noffke arrived for safe partnerships with Theo Doropoulos and Brett Dorey, who added 15 not out.Noffke and Dorey, who had already caused problems with the ball, backed up with a stand of 49 which ended with three to win. Noffke clipped Ben Laughlin to square leg, but Brad Knowles ensured the celebrations with three balls to go.The chase was looking easy until Marcus North (19) was unlucky to be McDermott’s first wicket on debut – the bowler didn’t appeal for the catch behind, with the ball hitting the pad – and it sparked a highly worrying period. Adam Voges hadn’t scored when he miscued a pull off Laughlin to leave the hosts at 3 for 55 and a further blow came six runs later with McDermott’s inswinger to David Bandy. Cutting followed up by removing Wes Robinson for 24 and it seemed to be Queensland’s game.Shortly after Laughlin was called up and was hit for consecutive boundaries by Luke Ronchi, but by the end of the over he had edged behind to leave Western Australia at 6 for 83. Noffke would not give up and with Dorey benefitted from two Powerplays, while Craig Philipson, diving at midwicket, dropped Noffke with 20 runs to win. McDermott was impressive with 2 for 21 from 10 while Cutting collected 2 for 26 and Laughlin led with 3 for 33.Western Australia’s mix of new and old bowlers was guided by Dorey, the only local fast man in the attack, as he gained 3 for 29 and was well supported by Noffke and Knowles (3 for 53). Noffke was virtually impossible to hit and returned 1 for 19 after giving up only seven runs in his first seven overs, including four consecutive maidens. Both Dorey and Noffke, the opening bowlers, enjoyed the friendly conditions and having a new ball at each end as part of a change in the one-day regulations.Nathan Reardon played across the line to Dorey and was lbw in the fifth over before Noffke struck in the next with one coming back into Ryan Broad (4), leaving them at 2 for 11. Lee Carseldine, the No. 3, was the only batsman to make a mark with an important half-century, but his partners fell too quickly to allow a big total.Carseldine went for a well-made 54 when Voges took a fine catch at backward point to give Knowles, formerly of Victoria, his first wicket and add to Queensland’s troubles by having them 5 for 86. By then Michael Hogan (1 for 31), who was recruited from New South Wales in the off-season, had struck his first blow by picking up Philipson (0) and Dorey had forced Glen Batticciotto (10) to play on. Dorey’s 10 overs ended with Chris Simpson’s lbw and North’s offspin was also suffocating. Hartley chipped in with 36 to ensure the Bulls had something to defend.

Newcastle manager news on Martinez

Craig Hope has revealed that Roberto Martinez is now ‘interested’ in becoming the next manager at Newcastle United.

The Lowdown: Jones in charge

It has now been reported that Graeme Jones will take charge of the next few games at St. James’ Park following the departure of Steve Bruce, possibly until the start of the next international break as the new owners continue their search for their next permanent coach.

Interestingly, Jones was Martinez’s assistant at Belgium, and so already knows the Spaniard very well.

The Latest: Martinez interest

As per Hope, Martinez is ‘in the frame’ for the job in the North East amid rumours involving Paulo Fonseca, and he is ‘interested’ in taking on the role.

The Daily Mail journalist has also revealed that it would cost less than £2m to buy out his current deal with the Belgium national team.

The Verdict: Wait for better

With the Tyneside club being linked with managers of the stature of Antonio Conte, they should wait for better candidates to fully become available before taking a punt on Martinez.

Lauded as a ‘world class’ boss by former Premier League manager Alex McLeish, he has certainly had good moments in his career, like his famous FA Cup win with Wigan Athletic and guiding Belgium to first place in the official FIFA World Rankings.

However, the Magpies currently find themselves in a relegation battle, and Martinez does not exactly have the best record for this, guiding the Latics down to the Championship in the same season that they won the cup.

Looking at the long-term, he has not won a major trophy with Belgium despite their ranking and golden generation of talent that includes the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku and Eden Hazard, and recorded bottom-half finishes in the top flight with Everton in his last two seasons with the Toffees (Transfermarkt).

Nonetheless, there are simply better candidates out there at this moment in time.

Razzaq says he's out of the ICL

Abdul Razzaq, the Pakistan allrounder, says he has been released from his contract with the ICL. The news could not be confirmed with the ICL, which on Wednesday released 50-odd players from their contracts, but, if true, Razzaq would qualify for the amnesty announced by the PCB.”I have been released from my contract with the ICL,” Razzaq told Cricinfo. “I am available and willing to play for Pakistan.”It won’t be that simple: Unlike other boards that have announced an umbrella amnesty for players quitting the ICL by May 31, the PCB said it would consider selecting players on a case-by-case basis. “While permitting such players to play cricket, PCB will decide on case-to-case basis the penalties to be imposed and the time period for which they will remain banned,” the PCB said.Though the BCCI has put in place a ‘cooling off’ period of a year – whereby an ex-ICL player will only be eligible to represent India after a year away from the ICL – the PCB in effect, has left the door open for players to return sooner. The stance adopted by the PCB is understandable, given how badly it was affected by the ban on ICL players. Nineteen players from Pakistan signed up with the league, nearly half of whom, can conceivably represent Pakistan still. The defection took away nearly the entire bench strength of the national side. Key among them are the likes of Razzaq and Mohammad Yousuf, and even players such as Imran Nazir, who could well be part of a Pakistan line-up in one of the three formats of the game. The move by various national boards to offer amnesty to the ICL players was prompted by the BCCI’s offer to ICL’s Indian players that was made on April 29. Since then, the Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and South Africa boards have proceeded similarly.

Wolves: Ian Wright praises Hwang Hee-chan

Hwang Hee-chan has been praised by Match of the Day pundit Ian Wright after he scored twice to earn Wolves all three points against Newcastle United on Saturday.

The Lowdown: Special Hwang

Since his arrival at Molineux on loan from RB Leipzig towards the end of the summer transfer window, the South Korea international has scored three goals and has been instrumental in Wolves’ rise in form following their three defeats at the start of the season.

His two goals against Steve Bruce’s side handed Bruno Lage his first three points at home since taking over at the club and took Wolves to 11th in the Premier League table, five points off fourth-placed Everton.

The Latest: Wright impressed

Speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day [via Molineux News], Wright stated how impressed he was with Hwang in the 2-1 win over Newcastle, saying: “He has got everything, he has got pace, skill, touch and awareness and he’s always driving to get into the box.”

Wright went on to discuss the partnership between Hwang and Raul Jimenez, after the Mexican striker set up both goals with some terrific hold-up play, comparing the new relationship at Molineux with those Jimenez had previously with Adama Traore and Diogo Jota.

The Verdict: More to come

Wolves’ lack of clinical edge in the final third was evident for all to see in Lage’s first three games in charge, but the arrival of Hwang has seen a different adaptation of play being implemented and it seems to be working a treat so far.

In the 89 minutes that he played against Newcastle, he completed 24 of his 29 passes and scored from both of his shots on target. Whilst he only managed to win three of his seven duels, his pace and finishing were perfect when the chances were provided and he now sits top of Wolves’ goalscoring charts with three goals.

His performances so far for the Midlanders will surely have the likes of Jeff Shi and Lage considering making the move from Germany a permanent one come the end of the season.
