2003 membership gets off to a flying start

With the 2003 membership campaign just underway Somerset County Cricket Club have already been inundated with applications to sign up for the new season

SOMERSET14-Dec-2002With the 2003 membership campaign just underway Somerset County Cricket Club have already been inundated with applications to sign up for the new season.Despite suffering relegation in both the County Championship and the National League during 2002 there seems to have been no reduction in the interest shown by Cidermen supporters. On just one day earlier this week over one hundred and forty membership applications were processed by the office staff at the County Ground bringing in revenue in excess of £12,000 which all looks very promising for the coming season.Membership secretary Jo Arnold told me: "We are absolutely delighted the way that the membership applications have come flooding in already and if this continues 2003 could be a record breaking year for members."In order to cope with those wishing to buy memberships for Christmas presents the club office is open this this morning between 10.00am and 1.pm and will also be open on Saturday mornings throughout February. Two other items that will make ideal Christmas presents are also available from the club office. The 2003 diary, which is an invaluable guide for all cricket followers is now available priced £7.50, whilst for Junior Sabres the new `Stumpy’ mug is also on sale. The mug, that features a cartoon of Somerset’s friendly dragon mascot, has proved so popular that it looks likely that stocks could even run out!

MCFC fans unhappy at Jesus news

Manchester City fans are unhappy at the news that Gabriel Jesus is a major transfer target for Juventus this summer.

This promises to be a busy summer at the Etihad Stadium after the previous term. It was a successful one on the whole as the Citizens won the Premier League and the League Cup, but the loss to Chelsea in the Champions League final in Porto could lead to the squad being refreshed.

That will also mean outgoings. Both Sergio Aguero (fcbarcelona.com) and Eric Garcia have departed City to join Barcelona and now, as per Gazzetta Dello Sport (via Sport Witness), Jesus could be joining them through the exit door. They say that the £54m-valued Brazil international (Transfermarkt) is Juve boss Max Allegri’s first-choice target, and Jesus would be open to making the switch.

The news was shared on Twitter by @City_Xtra, and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about Jesus below

“He’s too good to leave”

“We can’t lose Jesus I’m telling you we need to keep him at all costs”

“Hope this doesn’t come back to bite us.”

“I hate this summer. Gabriel Jesus is very important to us. He always gives his all on the field. His pressing and defending is top notch. Very versatile too. Why is pep trying to sell our best players”

“Sad to see him go, and if he joins a side that sets up more to suit him I’m sure he’ll do well. Makes sense for him to leave at this stage, though. I’d think 40m and reinvest that straight in to one of the three striker options. Delap as the understudy for next season?”

E muita eficiência no ataque.

Pakistan v Sri Lanka: Crucial encounter in fight for survival

As the second part of the double-league in this inaugural Morocco Cup 2002 commences here, things are intriguingly poised

Agha Akbar16-Aug-2002As the second part of the double-league in this inaugural Morocco Cup 2002 commences here, things are intriguingly poised. While Pakistan take on Sri Lanka, looking for a win in both remaining encounters, the Sri Lankans have the edge with Pakistan and South Africa more or less at level pegging.Sri Lanka’s victory over South Africa, by a margin wide enough to land them a bonus point, has set the cat among the pigeons, making the position of Pakistan and South Africa pretty precarious. Sri Lanka only need to win one more match to qualify for the final. That is why the encounter between Pakistan and Sri Lanka is now of crucial importance to Pakistan. They have to keep winning to stay in the hunt for the final. Though technically they would still remain alive even after their encounter with South Africa on Sunday, they would have to wait for the result of the last league game, between Sri Lanka and South Africa.Of course, if Pakistan win both their remaining matches, they would not have to go through that agonising wait. There are too many combinations and permutations to be discussed. The fact is that the issue of which two sides go to the final is likely to hang in the balance till the very last game. There are a few things going for Pakistan. They take on Sri Lanka on the pitch to the right of the main pavilion. It doesn’t offer the same prodigious spin to the Sri Lankan spinners that made them such a handful against South Africa. And then Pakistan meet South Africa on the pitch where the latter were mauled so badly – bowled out for a mere 174 as Chandana, Muralitharan and Jayasuriya ran riot in conditions helping slow bowlers. This makes both the Sri Lankans and the South Africans a bit uneasy, but it is the throw of the dice and not by design. The character of the newly-laid pitches was a surprise even for the organisers. Another absorbing twist is that by the time of the final, the pitch on the right should be worn enough to afford similar purchase to the spinners. With Sri Lanka now in front, needing just one win from their two remaining games to make it to the final, this factor has added to the worries of Pakistan coach Mudassar Nazar.Mudassar is concerned about the balance of the Pakistan team. Saqlain Mushtaq went for 80 runs in his 10 overs in the loss against South Africa, Shoaib Malik has not yet been given an outing, and Shahid Afridi has been sent down the order, where he is not the same force, to give Saeed Anwar a decent run to re-establish his credentials. This has meant that Waqar Younis has only five bowlers at his disposal, with no fallback should one of them get a beating or an injury.Mudassar admits that he has no simple answers. “In my playing days, we never played without six bowlers”, he said, reminding me that he used to finish his quota of 10 overs before the regular bowlers. But Anwar has now got the runs, and he is “our best player against the spinners.”Shahid Afridi is a misfit down the order. Muralitharan, who got him cheaply the other day, relishes bowling to him. Afridi is not sure of his feet against the spinners, while he plays the seamers well at top of the order. Since the management doesn’t want to drop Saeed Anwar, they could rest young Imran Nazir and Mohammad Sami, send Afridi up the order, and include Saqlain Mushtaq and Shoaib Malik. It would be cruel to sit Nazir and Sami out, for they are immensely talented and ones for the future. But this would give the side a three-pronged pace and seam attack (Waqar, Wasim Akram, Abdul Razzaq), and three spinners (Saqlain, Malik, Afridi). With plenty of all-rounders, it would not disturb the balance in the batting. But for the opening encounter of the double league, Mudassar would not have changed the winning combination against Sri Lanka. Against South Africa, a couple of changes would give the bowling more teeth. As far as the Sri Lankans are concerned, changes are less likely now that they have a good win behind them. They have got their eleven right, and it has gelled well to lead them to a famous comeback. With all teams feeling insecure and fighting for survival, some highly competitive cricket is on the cards.

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa eyeing Ben Brereton

Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa is eyeing a move for Blackburn Rovers star Ben Brereton.

What’s the story?

With the Whites still having yet to clinch a new signing ahead of the start of the Premier League season, Victor Orta will be hoping to get things underway at Elland Road as soon as possible.

And, according to the Chilean publication, Red Gol, Bielsa is interested in signing Brereton this summer.

The report adds that the versatile 22-year-old has been on the Leeds boss’ radar since a couple of seasons ago when they met in the Championship, while there is said to be positive relations between the Whites and Blackburn Rovers.

Shrewd signing for Bielsa

Able to play as a number nine, but also out wide on both flanks, Brereton enjoyed his most prolific campaign to date in the Championship with Blackburn last season, bagging seven goals and providing five assists in 40 league games.

Dubbed a “wonderful talent”, his Rovers manager, Tony Mowbray, said: “Brereton’s like a beast now, and he can score goals. I see it every day in training. He’s a brilliant lad and all our lads absolutely love him. He’s filled out now and he will work so hard for this team. He’s very gifted and can score goals.”

Meanwhile, Brereton’s Chilean compatriot, Carlos Villanueva, said: “He’s going to make a good contribution to the national team, especially in a position where we had been looking for variants years ago.  There has always been talk of that spare 9 and he gives you different characteristics… He comes from a football much more physical than the South American. He also has Chilean and South American blood, which puts in and fights.”

The £4.5m-rated ace sounds like the kind of give-it-his-all player that Bielsa wants in his squad at Elland Road, and at just 22, is still nowhere near the prime years of his career.

Given that the Leeds boss apparently wanted him years ago too, a move for a more well-rounded Brereton now – and especially off the back of his most exciting campaign – seems like it could well be a shrewd deal for Leeds.

Meanwhile, Leeds must land this EURO 2020 star…

Sami bowls into record books

On 9 March 2002, during 3rd day’s play in the 2nd Asian Test Championship Final between Pakistan and Sri Lanka at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, Mohammad Sami, playing in only his 3rd Test, became the third Pakistani after Wasim Akram and Abdul Razzaq and 27th bowler overall, to claim the 30th hat-trick in Test cricket. The right arm fast bowler grabbed the last three Sri Lankan wickets. He dismissed Buddhika Fernando, Nuwan Zoysa, both leg before and Muttiah Muralitharan, bowled off consecutive deliveries in his 37th over. With this hat-trick Sami also joined Wasim Akram as the only two bowlers with hat-tricks in both forms of the game so far. Wasim Akram, has two hat-tricks in Test cricket and he same number in LOIs. While Sami had a hat-trick in the 2nd ODI against West Indies at Sharjah on 15 February 2002.The current list includes nine Englishmen, eight Australians, three West Indians, three Pakistanis and one bowler each from South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and India. No bowlers from Zimbabwe and Bangladesh have claimed a hat-trick in Test matches so far.It was 30th hat-trick in Tests. Australia’s Thomas James Matthews and Hugh Trumble along with Pakistan’s Wasim Akram are the only bowlers to have performed this feat twice. The first bowler to perform a hat-trick in Test cricket was Australian, Frederick Robert Spofforth who dismissed three in a row in his six for 48 against England at Melbourne in 1878-79. Spofforth’s victims were V Royle, F Mackinnon and T Emmett. At 21 years and 13 days, Mohammed Sami is the third youngest player after Pakistan’s Abdul Razzaq to achieve this feat. Abdul Razzaq who was 20 years and 201 days old when he took three wickets in a row against Sri Lanka at Galle on 21 June 2000 and India’s Harbhajan Singh who was 20 years and 251 days old when he achieved the same against Australia at Calcutta on 11 March 2000.Hattrick heroes in Test cricket

Notes:

  • No bowler from Zimbabwe or Bangladesh has achieved this feat. A total of eleven hat-tricks have taken place in Australia (five in Melbourne, two in Sydney and Perth and one each in Adelaide and Brisbane), followed by six in England (three in Manchester, two in Leeds and one at Lord’s), five in Pakistan (four in Lahore and one at Rawalpindi), three in South Africa (one each at Port Elizabeth, Johannesburg and Cape Town) and finally one in New Zealand (at Christchurch), one at a neutral venue in Bangladesh (Dhaka), one in Sri Lanka (Galle), one in Zimbabwe (Harare) and one in India (Kolkata).
  • Lahore has the unique distinction with four separate hat-tricks at two different grounds – one at the Lawrence Gardens and three at the Gaddafi Stadium.
  • Allom, Petherick and Fleming did so on their Test debut. Allom, in fact took four wickets in 5 balls. Trumble (his 2nd hat-trick) and Griffin did so in their last Tests. Trumble, Matthews and Wasim Akram are the only bowlers to do so on two occasions. Matthews did so in the same match, but in separate innings in the same afternoon. Goddard was the oldest at 38 years and 87 days. Wasim Akram is the only Test captain to do so. Zoysa became the first bowler to take a hat-trick off his first three balls in a Test match. The Walsh and Hughes hat-tricks were spread over two innings. Allom, Petherick and Fleming did the hat-trick on debut.
  • Petherick has the most expensive innings analysis of somebody doing the hat-trick (3 for 103). Largest total to include a hat-trick is 537 by Pakistan at Rawalpindi in 1994-95. Least number of career Test wickets for a bowler doing a hattrick are 8 by Griffin.

Who is Elyounoussi’s heir at Celtic?

Spending power at Celtic this summer will be dictated by whoever potentially leaves Parkhead.

Odsonne Edouard looks as though he’ll be heading to England but the same eventuality awaits Hoops defender Kristoffer Ajer.

Whatever way you look at it, the Bhoys’ best players look set to depart.

    On the chalkboard

Celtic will also be dealt a blow by the number of players heading back to their parent clubs.

They will need to fund a replacement at right-back with Jonjoe Kenny leaving while a successor to Diego Laxalt may also be required.

That said, finding Moi Elyounoussi’s successor will be one of the hardest tasks. The Norwegian finished as Celtic’s second top scorer this season on 17 strikes in all competitions but it feels unlikely they’ll buy him back.

A fee of £5m has been touted but his form during the back end of the season was questionable. The winger scored just three goals in his last 16 Premiership outings for instance.

Who replaces him will be interesting to see. Celtic will have James Forrest fit and firing again while Ryan Christie could enter his final six months as a Hoops player on the wing.

    Dangerous Dembele

Next season simply has to be the year of Karamoko Dembele; Celtic have been teasing his potential for too long now.

With Elyounoussi departing, it provides the perfect opportunity for the tricky 18-year-old to finally be given a run of consistent outings.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-howe-favre-mcgregor-mccann-tierney” title=”Read the latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

Dembele has only played eight times for the Bhoys senior side but started to make more of a promising breakthrough towards the end of the season.

The teenager scored his opening first-team goal in the 4-0 win over St Johnstone and earned three consecutive outings from the bench.

It was staggering, however, that he didn’t start on the final day against Aberdeen when nothing was riding on the match.

Dembele proved in those mini cameos that he more than has what it takes to thrive at this level and that he should finally be given the opportunity to start from the off.

The way he scored his first goal proved what a threat he can be and why Celtic have to play with direct wingers, as opposed to someone like Christie who cuts inside.

The youngster raced away from the St Johnstone defence before sliding the ball home in expert fashion. It was taken like a player who’d been at the top for years; that’s how much confidence he exudes.

Described as “exceptionally good” by Ruud Gullit, Celtic need to prove there is a pathway for Dembele and their younger players.

After all, if they fail to play the teenager this season then he could well pack his bags. The prodigy has just a year remaining on his contract at Paradise and has so far been unwilling to pen new terms.

An explosive winger with quick feet, Celtic could terrify defences up and down the country next season by finally unleashing him.

They could also save a fortune in the transfer market. With Elyounoussi now moving back to Southampton, there is simply no need to spend on a replacement. Instead, they should look towards their reserves.

AND in other news, Celtic may repeat Arzani nightmare by signing 29 y/o gem, Howe thinks he’s “brilliant”…

O meia ainda balançou as redes nove vezes – o time chegou a 138.
