FICA take a stand against lie detectors

Lie detectors should not be used to investigate corruption in cricket as many courts around the world refuse to recognise their validity, according to the international players’ chief Tim May. Steve Waugh, a member of the MCC Cricket Committee, has proposed the use of lie detectors to expose players involved in fixing matches, and he took a polygraph this week to show how they worked. And while the England captain Andrew Strauss said he liked the idea of using lie detectors and would be happy to take a polygraph if they were introduced to catch corrupt cricketers, not all cricket figures share his opinion. May, the chief executive of the Federation of International Cricketers Associations (FICA), said his organisation “rejected outright” the idea of using lie detectors.”I commend MCC and Steve Waugh for trying to be proactive in the fight against corruption, but lie detector tests are far from foolproof and not permissible as a means of determining people’s guilt or innocence in the courts of the majority, if not all, cricketing territories,” May said. “It is therefore totally unacceptable that players should be put under pressure to submit to testing that is far fromfoolproof.”To publicly request players to make ‘some stand’ against corruption, by submitting to this ‘imperfect’ testing is irresponsible and FICA will oppose such actions in the strongest possible manner. The testing is far from foolproof – that’s why it’s not allowed to convict people in a court of law.”It’s a no win situation for the players – they quite rightly should decline to submit to one – the testing is not foolproof, the players are not under suspicion for any corruption offence but now with the MCC publicly encouraging them to submit to one, if the player refuses, it looks like he is hiding something.”May said he had written to the MCC to air FICA’s concerns over the matter. The Cricket Committee, which met at Lord’s this week, also suggested that the ICC’s Anti Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) should have the power to perform sting operations similar to that staged by the last year against Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif.

O ‘Super-Alison’ e a surpresa Victor Ferraz

Grant Flower, Zimbabwe’s most capped Test player, has announced retirement from all cricket, saying he wants to focus on coaching

Grant Flower, the Zimbabwe batsman, has formally announced his retirement from all cricket, saying he wants to focus on coaching. He had hinted at having played his last game in November, when he described the finals of the Stanbic Bank 20 Series in Zimbabwe as a “fitting end to my career”. He led the Mashonaland Eagles to the trophy in that game, and received a guard of honour from his team-mates.”I have drawn the line,” Flower told . “I had to make the decision whether to coach properly or continue playing properly and prepare as well as I could. I think there’s enough talent coming through and I don’t want to hold anyone back. I’ve had a good run and I’ve enjoyed it, but there is a transition from player to coach, and I think it’s time to take it.”Flower was appointed Zimbabwe’s batting coach in August and has also filled the role of player-coach for the Eagles in the 2010 season. He had retired from international cricket in 2004 after the dispute between the Zimbabwe board and the rebel players, but after six years of playing for Essex in England, made a surprise return to the national side, playing two ODIs in South Africa in October 2010.At the time, Alistair Campbell, the Zimbabwe selector, had suggested he wanted Flower to continue till the end of the 2011 World Cup. Flower has been among the runs for Essex, averaging 65.87 in the 2010 limited overs season.

Clássicos movimentam rodada do Campeonato Catarinense

É a mesma dificuldade.

Leeds XI, team injury news vs Spurs

Leeds United will be looking to put things right when they welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Elland Road for this afternoon’s early kickoff in the Premier League.

Last time out, Marcelo Bielsa’s side were thrashed 6-0 by Liverpool, one of many heavy defeats in recent months as the Yorkshiremen sit perilously above the relegation zone.

Burnley’s win over today’s opponents has closed the gap to the drop to just three points, making this encounter a rather important one.

It will be interesting to see what sort of side Bielsa opts for, here’s what we are predicting…

There could be two changes from Wednesday evening.

In goal, Illan Meslier remains, whilst the Argentine head coach is able to welcome back Diego Llorente and Robin Koch to the matchday squad after their respective injuries.

But it may be a risk to throw in the latter so soon after his concussion, so the former gets the nod alongside Pascal Struijk with Junior Firpo on the left and vice-skipper Luke Ayling returning to his natural right-back role.

In midfield, there are decisions to be made as Mateusz Klich has been underwhelming. He’s axed for this fixture with Rodrigo dropping deeper from the attack to take his place. The Spaniard joins Stuart Dallas and Adam Forshaw in the engine room.

Raphinha could be at risk of being dropped once again after his lacklustre display at Anfield. His attitude looked poor and that may not have gone down well with Bielsa.

Instead, Joe Gelhardt is given a rare start, leading the line with Jack Harrison and Daniel James providing the support. The 19-year-old gem has started only two of his ten Premier League appearances this season.

AND in other news, Fewer touches than Meslier: Leeds disaster who lost 86% duels was shocking at Anfield on Wednesday…

Trippier surgery update from Newcastle

The Shields Gazette have spoken to injury expert Ben Dinnery, who believes that Kieran Trippier may not play for Newcastle again this season following his foot surgery.

The Lowdown: Trippier at Newcastle

Trippier has been a revelation since signing from Atletico Madrid in January, bagging phenomenal free-kick goals in back-to-back games for the Magpies, helping lift Eddie Howe’s side out of the bottom three and four points clear of relegation.

As we know, the club confirmed a fracture to the fifth metatarsal bone on his left foot this week, bringing the good vibes on Tyneside to a screeching halt.

Initial reports had offered hope to the Toon Army though, suggesting that the England international will return before the end of the campaign, but Dinnery has now delivered his own update on the surgery.

The Latest: “Touch and go” to play this season

Miles Starforth of the Gazette revealed he ‘spoke to’ Dinnery, a Newcastle fan who runs the Premier Injuries website, this week, sharing the comments in his article.

“When the fifth metatarsal is involved, to quicken the healing process there’s normally some kind of fixation through surgery.

“It’s typically two to three months, though there are examples of players returning quicker. The average is 80 days. It depends on how bad it is. With Trippier, it looks touch and go for the end of the season.”

The Verdict: Huge blow for Howe

This is a massive worry for Howe, especially considering Newcastle World are now reporting that Javier Manquillo will also be out for the next two weeks.

This means that Emil Krafth will likely have to fill in on the right side of defence for crucial games against West Ham, Brentford and possibly Brighton, and the Sweden international has done little to instil any confidence, drawing much criticism this season from fans and media alike.

As far as Trippier is concerned, Dinnery’s ‘touch and go’ update on the surgery will make it an enormous risk to throw him into the action before the end of this campaign.

The free-kick master is in contract until 2024, so rushing him back and risking a reoccurrence that could spread into the next campaign makes little sense. It seems Sunday’s heroics against Aston Villa may be the last we see of Trippier this season.

Newcastle now willing to splash over £50m on superstar striker!

Spin success takes North by surprise

When Shahid Afridi was asked after the Lord’s Test what he thought of Marcus North’s bowling, he screwed up his face, looked away and tried not to laugh. As compliments go, it could have been more convincing. North doesn’t care. He described it as one of the highlights of his career to help Australia win a Test and earn a place on the bowling honour board at Lord’s, alongside his batting colleague Shane Watson. If that wasn’t proof enough that the natural order had been turned upside-down, North’s 6 for 55 was the best bowling by an Australian spinner in a Test innings at the home of cricket. Shane Warne couldn’t match it, nor Clarrie Grimmett, nor Arthur Mailey, although none of them had the luxury of bowling to Pakistan at Lord’s.”I don’t feel like I deserve that, to be honest,” North said. “There have been some amazing bowlers over the years who have had some great bowling performances at Lord’s. I certainly would like to have that six-for against England. But it was a great occasion to play at a neutral venue against Pakistan at Lord’s.”Afridi’s wicket was the ultimate bonus for a bowler – from his fourth delivery he tried to launch North onto Cavendish Avenue, only to find the fielder at deep midwicket. It wasn’t all luck for North and his dismissal of Umar Akmal, who cut to slip when he was surprised by turn and extra bounce from the rough outside off stump, was memorable.Things went North’s way as soon as Ricky Ponting handed him the ball ahead of Steven Smith on the fourth day. With two left-handers at the crease, Ponting wanted the ball turning away from them, but with his first delivery North drifted the ball down leg side and had Salman Butt stumped thanks to an excellent piece of glovework from Tim Paine.”I’m as surprised as you guys,” North said. “It felt like the ball was coming out okay. There are times it has come out better, but I haven’t had too many opportunities at this level. An opportunity to contribute with the ball is something that I love to do. Getting the ball thrown to me and having the opportunity to help win a Test match for Australia is certainly one of the highlights of my career.”North’s first six-for in first-class cricket helped him forget about a disappointing match with the bat, after he was bowled for a duck in the first innings and caught behind for 20 in the second. North is coming off a century and a 90 in Australia’s last series, on their tour of New Zealand, but his tendency to make triple or single figures, with not a lot in between, is a slight concern.”In general with batters the first 20 or 30 balls are pretty important,” he said. “My record shows it’s very important for me. It’s something that I’m very aware of. I don’t think it’s a nervous thing. I’m no more nervous than anyone else. It’s something that I’ve been trying to work on my whole career, it’s not just since I’ve been playing for Australia.”It’s a habit that means he is constantly under the microscope, for even if he has scored recent hundreds a string of very low scores is not a good look for a No. 6 batsman. Speculation over his place in the team intensified during the Australian home season, but his efforts in New Zealand eased the pressure.”That’s something I’ve learnt a lot during the Australian summer, where there is that scrutiny,” North said of dealing with media criticism. “I’ve learnt ways and techniques to filter that. But in New Zealand it was rewarding for me not just to get through that scrutiny but as a mental challenge as well, dealing with that side of things for the first time is rewarding for me.”At least the next Test is being played at a venue with happy memories for North. At Headingley last year, his 110 helped Australia to an innings victory over England and earned him the Man of the Match award. He’d love to remind people he’s a batsman first, bowler second.

Bresnan and Finn aim to build on winter success

Six months ago neither Tim Bresnan or Steven Finn were at the head of the pack for pace-bowling slots, yet now both will line-up against Bangladesh at Lord’s

Forming a successful Test team can take years of work, but sometimes a couple of crucial building blocks slot in almost out of nowhere. Six months ago neither Tim Bresnan or Steven Finn were at the head of the pack for pace-bowling slots, yet both will now line-up against Bangladesh at Lord’s with the aim of pushing their claims for a more permanent place. As is often the case, ill-luck to others presented their opportunities. Ryan Sidebottom and Graham Onions both went lame before the first Test in Bangladesh during March – and the latter is now ruled out for at least another three months – leaving the England selectors searching for replacements. Bresnan’s consistent one-day form meant his was a logical progression, while Finn was summoned to the squad having impressed for the Lions in UAE.Both slotted straight into the line-up in the searing heat of Chittagong and Dhaka on pitches devoid of any life. But it was the tough conditions which allowed the pair to enhance their reputations. Bresnan showed the knack of breaking partnerships with reverse swing and suggested he could handle the No. 7 spot, while Finn, even on deathly slow pitches, found troublesome bounce with useful pace. However, while both emerged during the same series that’s where the similarities end. With Bresnan you have the stocky, northern allrounder who has had to fight hard to get himself in shape, then there is the beanpole, 6’7” frame of Finn who has battled to add the bulk needed to be a fast bowler.”I did myself a lot of favours in Bangladesh with the way I bowled, but especially the way I batted,” Bresnan said. “I grabbed the chance with both hands which is what you need to do to force you way into a team.”But I realised I needed a good start in county cricket so decided to play as much as I could for Yorkshire and I realised I’d be difficult to leave out if I had a successful start to the season.”Bresnan has just returned from playing a key role in England’s World Twenty20 triumph where his all-round reputation was further boosted, but Finn has spent the last six weeks in the more humble surrounds of Division Two Championship action for Middlesex. He started the season with an almighty bang by claiming 14 wickets in the match against Worcestershire and has 29 scalps at 18.68 for the season. There is already a feeling that the England management see him as an Ashes weapon with his height a potentially crucial factor on hard Australian pitches, but the 21-year-old is trying to keep himself firmly focussed on the week ahead.”Even six months ago I wasn’t expecting an international debut in 2010,” Finn said. “I’m just taking each game as it comes and that’s all I can do and it will stand me in good stead.”Bangladesh was a great experience, playing on wickets like that which I have never played on before. You don’t experience decks that flat here, and it’s nice to bowl a green seamer in April after slugging it out on those wickets. I’ve started the season well and taken a few wickets but each game is a new day.”Steven Finn’s early-season form has built on the positive impressive he made in Bangladesh and he is now tipped for an Ashes berth•Getty Images

If England’s plans continue to take shape as expected, two of England’s pace attack in Australia will be James Anderson and the currently resting Stuart Broad. Then it depends on whether it’s a five-man or four-man attack as to how many berths are vacant. Onions is losing ground with his untimely injury so both Bresnan and Finn could jump ahead during the summer, although there is no such thing as too many quick bowlers to chose from.”The way it’s happened over the last couple of years means we have a crop of seamers that can do a job in Test cricket,” Bresnan said. “Anyone who has played has been quite successful and long may that continue because one seamer isn’t going to play every game, it isn’t humanly possible.”This is how it’s got to be know because we play so much cricket. Test cricket is very intense, a lot more so than county cricket, and you can’t get away with 75% and be successful. As long as you have quality guys playing all the time, which we have, we should be able to maintain the standards.”The balance of the England side is a key question which needs answering this season and Bresnan will be central to the debate of four bowlers or five. Andy Flower is a huge supporter and Bresnan’s 91 in Dhaka hinted that No. 7 isn’t out of his reach at Test level.”In the last six to eight months I’ve gone the other way and spent a lot more time working on my batting,” he said. “My bowling is at a stage where it just needs fine-tuning, I feel I have the skill and accuracy. It’s not that I don’t work on it, but it takes a backburner at practice because we bowl so much anyway.”I’ve always know I could score runs at Test level it’s just about the application. I can play in Test cricket, no problem, as an allrounder,” he said. “It’s nice for the captain and coach when there is someone down the order who can get big runs.”Finn’s role is more one-dimensional but his development could be even more vital to England’s chances. They are craving a tall, quick bowler to replace Steve Harmison and Andrew Flintoff with Finn being the closest available on the domestic scene. Finn will hope that Andrew Strauss gives him the Pavilion End at Lord’s when his turn comes with the ball, which is the end from which his role model was at his best.”I have my idols like Glenn McGrath, in my opinion the best bowler to play the game, and it’s nice to play in the environment he was in a few years ago and see what I can do,” he said. “I’m still learning about my game. I’ve spoken a lot to Gus [Angus Fraser, the Middlesex director of cricket] about this and I don’t want to be like anyone else. I want to bowl how I can with my style but it’s hard to put my finger on what that is.”But will a strike or stock role be Finn’s route? “It would be great to combine the two. It would be nice to have a lot of pace and be able to control it – that’s the ideal fast bowler – and everyone who plays cricket should try and make themselves as good as they can. At the moment I’m somewhere between the two but no way am I the finished article.”There is still a chance that neither Finn or Bresnan will feature in Brisbane come November 25, but the fact both are now in the mix shows how far they have developed in a short space of time.
