Wellington out-bat and out-bowl Central to gain big early advantage

James Franklin, with the exuberance of youth, and Roger Twose, with impatience which may be the by-product of experience, respectively bowled and batted Wellington to a first innings lead over Central Districts on the first day of their Shell Trophy

Steve McMorran13-Dec-2000James Franklin, with the exuberance of youth, and Roger Twose, with impatience which may be the by-product of experience, respectively bowled and batted Wellington to a first innings lead over Central Districts on the first day of their Shell Trophy match at the Basin Reserve today.Franklin took 5-39 from 20 overs, the best return of his formative Trophy career, as Wellington impressed Central into batting, then rolled them for 111. And Twose, seemingly reluctant to dally at the crease – batting like a man with a pressing appointment – took 57 from 46 balls as it reached 153-3 by stumps in reply.Their joint efforts and the patient unbeaten innings of Wellington captain Matthew Bell, who was 71 at stumps, left Wellington in firm, satisfied control of the match with three full days still yawning before them. But the efforts of the batsmen, who enforced Wellington’s superiority this afternoon, can be considered secondary to those of Franklin and his fellow bowlers who so forcefully supported Bell’s decision to field on winning the toss.Offered the new ball in the absence of Carl Bulfin and Mark Gillespie, the spearheads of Wellington’s attack who are absent through injury, Franklin nipped the top from Central’s order then returned after lunch to shiver their innings totally. He took 2-22 in his first spell of eight overs, claiming his and Central’s first wicket with the first ball of the third over, bowled Ben Smith to leave Central 12-2 and bowed briefly out of the attack when they were three wickets down after 15 overs. He strongly embellished that first spell with another prior to lunch and a third in the afternoon session that returned 3-8 from seven overs. Two of his victims – Smith and Martin Sigley – were bowled and three more fell lbw as he first disconcerted batsmen with bounce and pace then worked them out with fuller and seaming deliveries.Sigley’s dismissal was a classic case in point: he was struck on the helmet ducking a sharply rising ball in the 41st over then bowled leg stump next ball as he hovered, hesitantly between the front and back foot.Franklin found some movement in the air, more off the pitch and kept an intense pressure on the batsmen with his control of bounce and line from his left-armer’s point of release close to the wicket. No-one played him with authority and there has hardly been a better recent example from a young Wellington bowler of the art of exploiting favourable conditions, by craft rather than passion.Iain O’Brien chimed in, as Franklin’s opening partner, with the early wicket of Mark Douglas and added the last wicket of the innings, which ended in the 53rd over. He finished with 2-14 from 10.3 overs and Matthew Walker, with subtler but demanding medium pace, with 2-10 from 11 overs.David Kelly, opening with Hill, was a bewildered spectator as three Central wickets fell for 23 runs in the first 10 overs, with each batsman making only six. He was still four not out when the third wicket fell and had batted watchfully for 93 minutes for 11 runs when he was out in the 24th over when Central was 56-4.Jamie How, the young Manawatu batsman making his debut, added 33 with Kelly in 57 minuts for the fourth wicket and 20 with Jacob Oram for the fifth before becoming the sixth man out for 28 when Central was 80. He was Franklin’s third victim, fallen after defying the Wellington bowlers for 106 minutes.Greg Todd, 17, was similarly a close witness to the dismisssals of How, Sigley, Hamish Morgan, Ewan Thompson and Michael Mason, stranded on 16 not out after batting through the last hour of the innings. His 16, How’s 28, Kelly’s 11, Thompson’s 10 were faintly luminous points in a lustreless innings. Four batsmen were out for six and Wellington’s 21 extras were the innings’ second highest score.Wellington’s position at stumps might have been more formidable but for the almost extravagant waste of the wickets of Richard Jones and Jason Wells as they mounted their reply. Jones was out for 9 in the 12th over when Wellington was 26, pulling an undistinguished delivery from Oram to square leg. And Wells simply directed another short ball from Oram to Mark Douglas at second slip when he had spent 32 minutes making one run. Wellington was 44 for two.Twose was not prepared to brook such timidity. He strode to the wicket with the demeanour of a man impatient with proceedings and after watching long enough to be certain the wicket held terrors only for the infirm he set about Central’s bowling with dismissive authority. He flicked a six, almost disdainfully, over square leg from Oram, threw another over long-on then dismissed nine deliveries to the boundary, peremptorily and with almost callous disapproval that they had been served him in the first place. He played at times from his crease, fetching half volleys to the point and cover boundaries, then stepped emphtically down the wicket and drove straight, thunderously and with the full face of the bat.Twose surpasseed in eight overs, after arriving at the crease in the 20th over, the score Bell had dallied over for 28 overs. He reached his half century in 33 minutes from as many balls and departed 13 balls later, when his captain was yet only 43.Bell, whose innings mixed stout defence with a series of almost ballistic pulls through square leg, went on to his own half century in 140 minutes and had batted more than three hours when stumps were drawn minutes after 6pm.Wellington resume tomorrow with Bell not out 71, Selwyn Blackmore 13 not out, on a wicket becoming hard and true and with a large amount of batting still to come.

Spurs legend gives take on Parker links

Former Tottenham Hotspur star Graham Roberts has told Football FanCast that Scott Parker is not yet ready to manage the club as they continue their search for Jose Mourinho’s replacement.

Chairman Daniel Levy is attempting to appoint a new manager after sacking Jose Mourinho last month.

The Portuguese was let go after the club fell to seventh in the Premier League.

They were also eliminated from the Europa League in humiliating fashion after a 3-0 loss to Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia.

Ryan Mason is in interim charge of the team, but reports suggest that there are a number of managers being considered for the role, including Brendan Rodgers and Gareth Southgate.

Julian Nagelsmann, who had been touted as the frontrunner, is set to join Bayern Munich, leaving Spurs at square one.

Parker has been suggested as the next appointment by ex-defender Michael Dawson after impressing at Fulham, even though the club are in serious danger of being relegated straight back to the Championship as things stand.

Roberts was asked if Parker was ready, or if the job was too early for him, and he believes that the ex-Spurs and West Ham United midfielder should stay where he is for the foreseeable future.

Speaking to FFC, he said: “I think he will do well to stay at Fulham and learn his trade even more and bring them back up again.

“I think early in the season, they were getting beat week in, week out. But I think he’s learned as he’s gone on. He’s done a brilliant job there but I do think it’s another level, Tottenham is one, two, or three levels higher, there is a lot more pressure on winning every week and entertaining but he’s done a great job at Fulham.

“For me, I think it’ll be two or three years too early.”

Tyler Roberts linked with Leeds exit

Leeds United attacker Tyler Roberts has been linked with a summer move to Newcastle United, with his future at Elland Road up in the air.

The Lowdown: Handy squad player

The Whites have enjoyed an excellent season back in the Premier League, with Marcelo Bielsa easily ensuring that they remain in the top flight for 2021/22.

Roberts has proven to be a handy squad player, making 14 starts in the league and 25 appearances overall in the competition, registering two assists.

The Latest: Newcastle keen on Roberts

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle are ‘monitoring’ Roberts’ current situation, with his current deal expiring at the end of next season.

It is claimed that Leeds have offered the 22-year-old a new contract, but that hasn’t stopped the Magpies from potentially lining up a move for the Wales international.

The Verdict: Keep hold of attacker

While Roberts may not necessarily be an indispensable figure at Elland Road, he is an exciting young player with 13 international caps, hence Leeds’ offer of a new deal.

Bielsa needs to plan for the future and the Welshman can be a big part of that, maturing over time and becoming a more complete footballer.

Allowing him to leave this summer would be a risk, given his possible ceiling – his former manager Tony Pulis believes he has ‘got everything’ as a player – so Leeds should ignore any interest coming his way.

Noel Whelan hails Leeds hero Stuart Dallas

Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan is the latest to heap praise on Stuart Dallas following his weekend heroics.

Marcelo Bielsa picked up arguably their best win of the season on Saturday afternoon, clinching a dramatic 2-1 triumph away to Manchester City. Liam Cooper’s red card just before the interval saw Leeds have to battle with 10 men for more than half the game, but they dug deep at the Etihad Stadium.

Dallas was the hero on the day, scoring both of his side’s goals, including the stoppage time winner, as he again outlined his importance.

Dallas lauded by Whelan

Speaking to Football Insider, ex-Premier League attacker Whelan waxed lyrical over the 29-year-old, describing him as an ‘incredible’ player:

“Just simply immense. He was my player of the year last season and he hasn’t let up since then. He has been exactly the same this year. The man is just incredible for Leeds United.

“Everything you want from a player, he has got: character, desire, hunger and professionalism. The last goal highlights that.

“He was busting a gut to get forward having done so much defensive work. He should have been drained and shattered but what a run.

“He is Mr. Leeds at the moment. Dallas can do no wrong, whatever position you play him in. His fitness levels are through the roof. When you are shattered, to produce a finish and run like that… Wow, incredible.”

Transfer Tavern take

Dallas may not be the most fashionable footballer, but there is no denying how influential he is for Leeds, proving to be such a key cog in the machine. His match average of 2.2 successful tackles is the fifth-highest at Elland Road, while just two players can better his 53 passes per game (WhoScored).

His versatility makes him a priceless squad member, allowing him to thrive in several positions, and his fitness levels and eye for goal – he has scored seven times in the league this season, joint-second at Leeds to Patrick Bamfod – also stand out.

Leicester eye Liverpool ace Keita

Leicester City are reportedly eyeing up a transfer move to sign Naby Keita from Liverpool, according to Football Insider.

As per the news outlet, the East Midlands club are keeping tabs on his current situation at Anfield ahead of the summer transfer window.

A recruitment source has told the publication that the Foxes would be interested in signing the central midfield player if he were to become available.

Brendan Rodgers is reportedly a ‘big admirer’ of his ‘energy’ and ‘quality on the ball’, and the Reds currently value him at £30m, a big cut on the £52.5m that they originally paid to sign him from RB Leipzig back in 2018.

Leicester should sign Keita

Given that Keita is 26 years of age and still has his best years ahead of him, £30m is a snip for the Guinea international in today’s market, especially given that Transfermarkt currently value him at £34.2m.

He can still be ‘world-class’ on his day as well, as his own teammate and renowned star player Virgil Van Dijk claimed back in July 2020 after Jurgen Klopp’s team won the 2019/20 Premier League title.

Having gained that extra experience of playing in the top flight and helping in winning the title, Keita would have no problems whatsoever in adapting to the division, and thus could settle in very well at LCFC if he stays injury-free.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Chukwuemeka footage

Plenty of Aston Villa fans have been reacting to footage regarding youngster Carney Chukwuemeka on social media.

Chukwuemeka, who was attracting interest from Bayern Munich and Juventus just last month, scored on his debut for England’s Under-18 side in a friendly against Wales on Monday.

The 17-year-old picked the ball up from just over the halfway line and exchanged a give-and-go with a teammate before calmly slotting past the goalkeeper.

Fellow Villa youngsters Louie Barry and Aaron Ramsey also featured against Wales for the Three Lions.

Chukwuemeka signed professional terms at Villa Park last October and was included in Dean Smith’s matchday squad for the first time against Leicester City last month.

The midfielder has made 16 appearances for the club’s youth side this season, scoring once and registering three assists.

Villa fans react

@academyavfc shared Chukwuemeka’s goal on Twitter on Monday afternoon.

Spurs’ Sissoko could leave

Football.london writer Rob Guest has suggested Moussa Sissoko could leave Tottenham this summer.

Sissoko could depart

France international Sissoko has struggled to work his way into Jose Mourinho’s starting XI in the Premier League on a regular basis this term, with him playing from the start on just 14 occasions in the top flight (Transfermarkt).

As a result, Guest has suggested he could be on the way out of north London this summer.

Right time

Since signing for Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs from Newcastle in 2016, Sissoko has been an important player. Criticised at times (Football FanCast), he has still managed 198 matches for Tottenham, with his energy and strength proving to be valuable qualities in the middle of the park.

However, at 31, he is now approaching the end of his career, and Mourinho clearly feels other options are better than the 67-time France international. A wage of £79,000 a week (salarysport.com) is considerable, and his departure may well allow Spurs to allocate funds elsewhere as they look to strengthen their squad. With two years left on his contract, as well, this may be the last possibility for them to earn some real money from his sale. Here, Guest may well be right about his potential exit.

Liverpool: Fans beg for Jack Grealish

Former Liverpool player Stan Collymore has said that Jack Grealish could be part of a summer ‘overhaul’ at Anfield.

Collymore told Birmingham Live that Grealish, Erling Haaland, Ansu Fati and 20-year-old AZ Alkmaar forward Myron Boadu were all ‘on a list’ of potential signings.

He seems to be putting his links with the club to good use. Amid Liverpool’s desperate struggles in the Premier League this season, there have been calls for the team to evolve, and there may well be a changing of the guard in the Reds’ frontline.

Why Grealish is in demand

Grealish is one of the most coveted players in the country given his heroic exploits for Aston Villa. The Englishman has racked up 10 assists so far this season, putting him third in the league rankings (via Premier League). He’s level with Bruno Fernandes for 2020/21 and only one shy of Kevin de Bruyne, one of the most prolific creators in the league’s history.

Grealish has another four years left on his deal at Villa Park and is valued at £45m, so he wouldn’t come cheap (via Transfermarkt). However, that didn’t stop many Liverpool fans from begging for the club to have a go at signing him.

West Brom sweating on Snodgrass fitness

Joseph Masi has confirmed that West Brom are ‘sweating’ on the fitness of Robert Snodgrass as he has a ‘bruised knee’ ahead of their trip to face Burnley.

The former West Ham United man will be hoping that he will regain his fitness in time for kick-off, although Sam Allardyce may not want to risk him from the start given his lack of training.

Snodgrass would be a big loss to West Brom

If Snodgrass is not able to start for the Hawthorns faithful, then it would be a big loss for them in what looks set to be a must-win game against Sean Dyche’s men as they look to climb closer to them in the Premier League table and ease the huge worries of relegation back down to the EFL Championship.

The Scotland international is a great character to have both on and off the pitch, as Allardyce revealed upon signing him for the Baggies that he heard that he was ‘exceptional’ in the dressing room.

At 33 years of age now, he has not lost his ability to get stuck in for his teammates either, as he has won no fewer than 4.7 of his duels a match in the top flight so far in the 2020/21 term, as well as averaging 1.7 tackles and 1.3 clearances per appearance (Sofascore).

Nonetheless, Albion may have to find a way to win without the winger with the clash fast approaching.
