Predicted final PL table for Southampton

When Southampton briefly went top of the Premier League in November following a 2-0 win over Newcastle United, few would have predicted that the Saints would have found themselves embroiled in a relegation battle just a few months later.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side started the season in impressive form, with Che Adams and Danny Ings forming a superb partnership up front, whilst James Ward-Prowse and Oriol Romeu were excelling in midfield.

The defence looked strong too, with Jannik Vestergaard in particular in sensational form, and for a few weeks, it genuinely looked like the South Coast club could challenge for a European spot this season, despite struggling so much in the first half of the previous campaign.

However, injury problems and poor form saw Hasenhuttl’s side slowly drop down the table, with the likes of Kyle Walker-Peters, Ings, Vestergaard and Romeu all missing large periods.

The Saints are currently on a woeful run of form that has seen them pick up just four points from a possible 36 in the Premier League, with the recent home defeat against Brighton and Hove Albion leaving them in real danger of relegation this season, as they are currently just seven points ahead of 18th-placed Fulham.

With the international break giving the Saints two weeks off before their next Premier League fixture, Football FanCast predicts the final table and how Southampton will do in their remaining games…

Southampton currently sit on 33 points after 29 games, with nine wins, six draws and 14 defeats to their name.

When predicting the outcome of every game between now and the end of the season, our verdict was that they will pick up three more top-flight wins before the end of the season, along with two draws and four defeats, which is more than enough to see them comfortably stay up, as shown in the graphic above.

Hasenhuttl’s side have some vital fixtures coming up against the likes of Burnley, West Brom and Crystal Palace, and if they can produce the same sort of performance as they did in the FA Cup at the weekend, then there’s no reason why they can’t finish the season strongly.

Man Utd’s Fernandes was awful vs Sheff Utd

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes badly let Ole Gunnar Solskjaer down as they fell to a shock 2-1 defeat to Sheffield United at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Donny van de Beek was given a rare start in the FA Cup against Liverpool, although Fernandes came off the bench in the second half to win the game with a sublime free kick.

It’s been almost a year since Fernandes arrived at Old Trafford and his arrival has appeared to have made a massive difference as it’s fair to say that he has transformed United’s fortunes, so it was perhaps hardly surprising he was recalled in his favoured position as a central No. 10 with Pogba on the left to face Chris Wilder’s side.

But Solskjaer may been left to rue his decision to restore Fernandes to the starting line-up, as he produced an uncharacteristically wasteful display as the Premier League strugglers caused a stunning upset to pick up only their second win of the season.

Fernandes started the midweek defeat in a central position behind United’s first-choice striker Anthony Martial but had a bad game far below his usual high standards.

Having beaten Liverpool in Sunday’s FA Cup fourth round tie, United largely struggled to get out of first gear, as they trailed 1-0 after Kean Bryan met John Fleck’s corner with a well-timed header.

Wilder’s boys, who have scored the fewest amount of goals in the Premier League this season, looked a far more lively threat before Harry Maguire scored his first goal at Old Trafford to level the score.

Their hopes of salvaging a point, however, were all but ended after substitute Oliver Burke’s shot took a deflection off Axel Tuanzebe to sail past the helpless David de Gea.

Midfielder Paul Pogba struggled to get a foothold in the game as United continued to labour, yet it was another uninspiring top-flight performance from Fernandes that will be most concerning for Solskjaer.

It’s perhaps telling that Pogba, despite his obvious struggles, still received a higher SofaScore rating than his teammate, whilst he also took more touches of the ball (116) as he tried in vain to dictate play.

At times the 26-year-old was a total passenger, as he lost possession 25 times – the most out of any player on the pitch, including Aaron Wan-Bissaka (15) and Pogba (19), and far higher than his season average of 20.9, as per SofaScore, as he regularly gifted possession to the opposition.

Despite his best efforts, Fernandes failed to offer much by way of an end product in the final third, as he didn’t register a single shot on target or provide an assist. He also couldn’t complete a single cross from five attempts successfully, per SofaScore.

It was a night to forget for the Portugal star in the midweek defeat as his three shots in total never even came close to testing Aaron Ramsdale as they were all blocked by a stubborn Blades defence.

Fernandes has now gone four league games in a row without a goal or an assist. With a trip to Arsenal on the horizon, Solskjaer will be hoping he can stop the rot from spreading further before they take on Mikel Arteta’s side at the Emirates.

Sheffield Wednesday: Fans react to Aken injury

Many Sheffield Wednesday fans are reacting to the latest news reported by Dom Howson around Owls player Joost van Aken.

The journalist posted on Twitter that: ‘Joost van Aken has suffered a fresh injury blow. The defender has not played for #SWFC since their Boxing Day draw at Blackburn.’

The 26-year-old was loaned out last season but became integral for the 2020/21 campaign as he featured 17 times before his injury (Transfermarkt). During the 1278 minutes of football he has played in the Championship, he managed 1.1 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, and 2.4 clearances a game (WhoScored).

When he played this season, the Owls managed six clean sheets, but only managed to win three games (Transfermarkt). Since his injury, Wednesday have won three out of four matches, and due to this, many are not too upset that he will be sidelined for even longer than expected.

However with Sheffield Wednesday still in the relegation zone and four points from safety (SofaScore), depth in their squad is needed as they have to turn things around sooner rather than later, so this injury will be frustrating for the club.

Wolves must swoop for Jorge Mendes client Renato Sanches

Wolves have had a topsy-turvy few weeks heading into the festive period and now just require a sense of stability.

However, with yet another transfer window on the horizon, that could be anything but the case.

What’s the word?

Nuno Santo’s men are switching formations at the moment and experiencing mixed results.

They drew with Southampton and beat Arsenal with a four-man backline, but then lost to Liverpool and Aston Villa.

Though, after moving back to a three-man defence, they beat Chelsea 2-1. What they could do with now is potentially a few more bodies to enable that four-man defence to thrive.

One player they were linked with towards the back end of November was Jorge Mendes client Renato Sanches.

The 23-year-old who currently plays for Lille was catching the eye of Wolves and now they’ve been handed a boost in their pursuit of the Portuguese.

That’s because according to Get French Football News, his club are in dire straits financially with debts racking up close to €200m (£179.7).

Thus, the report suggests that the idea of Sanches leaving Lille has not been excluded. An English club supposedly bid €70m (£62.9m) for his services last summer.

According to Transfermarkt, the midfielder is rated at just £18m at the moment.

A phenomenal player

Sanches had a terrible stint on loan at Swansea in the Premier League during the 2017/18 season. He started nine times and failed to contribute to a single goal.

However, his football has come on leaps and bounds since, especially in the last two years.

After signing for Lille, he has been supremely effective in a box-to-box midfield role, contributing to four goals in 19 appearances last term. This season he has scored only once, but his overall game has been excellent.

Described as someone with “the strength of a WWE heavyweight” by the Bundesliga website, he possesses qualities to his game that few in Wolves’ midfield have.

For instance, he’d bring a greater ball carrying ability to the middle of the park. He has amassed 2.1 dribbles per game in Ligue 1, a tally that usurps Joao Moutinho, Ruben Neves and Leander Dendoncker.

The first two players have only achieved dribble rates of 0.2 and 0.1 respectively this season – he would clearly be a superb signing if they can secure him for a reasonable price.

Sanches is the real deal.

Exclusive: Pundit reveals what Josh Windass has told him about Sheffield Wednesday’s squad

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, former Hull City marksman Dean Windass has revealed what his son, Josh Windass, has told him about the current Sheffield Wednesday squad as they battle to stave off relegation this season.

The Owls were slapped with a 12-point deduction in the summer (since reduced to just six points) following the sale of Hillsborough Stadium to owner Dejphon Chansiri.

And after a poor start to the campaign, the Thai businessman pulled the trigger on Garry Monk after over a year in charge.

Ex-Stoke City and West Brom boss Tony Pulis soon replaced him, but the Yorkshiremen have managed to win just one game under the 62-year-old since he was appointed last month.

Windass’ son Josh is currently their top goalscorer with three goals from 15 starts, as per WhoScored, and he has claimed that they’ve got a good enough squad to beat the drop this term…

Dean revealed to FFC:

“Josh thinks so. Josh says they’ve got a good squad.

“They shouldn’t be down there. The 12-point deduction killed them at the start of the season. [The] confidence is quite low when it’s like that but that’s just the way it went.

“Josh has said they’re a good side, you know when they’re on their day.”

Wednesday will be looking to build on their 1-0 victory over Coventry when they head to Blackburn Rovers on Boxing Day, a side that has won just once in their last five league outings.

The win on Saturday moved the Owls off the bottom of the Championship table on goal difference, though it still leaves them four points from safety after 20 matches with both teams in front of them having an extra game to play.

Without the deduction, Pulis’ men would be 20th – safe, but by no means comfortable.

Only time will tell on whether Windass’ words will ring true.

Everton captain Seamus Coleman was the unsung hero against Crystal Palace

The Everton and Carlo Ancelotti train just doesn’t look like slowing down anytime soon.

The Toffees have enjoyed the perfect start to the Premier League campaign, with three wins from three sending them right to the top of the table.

Their latest win came at Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison finding themselves on the score-sheet as their side sealed a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace.

How big of an Everton fan are you? Can you spot Mikel Arteta from Graham Stuart? This quiz will test your knowledge, try it if you’re brave enough…

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

But whilst Calvert-Lewin continues to prove his immense improvements as a central striker for the Toffees – his goal against Palace took him to the top of the league’s goal-scoring charts for the moment with five – it was veteran defender Seamus Coleman who arguably impressed the most.

Aside from setting up Calvert-Lewin for his tenth minute strike, the Irishman looked threatening going forward, and seems to have struck a nice understanding with James Rodriguez already.

As per Sofascore, he had 71 touches, provided one key pass and was all in on the defensive end too, making three clearances and tackles apiece, and registering one interception and blocked shot too.

And speaking after the game, Ancelotti himself declared: “Seamus is doing really well. He is an example for all the others of how you need to be: the attitude, the spirit – every day. I’ve had a lot of captains in my career but how Seamus expresses his love for the shirt is really top.

“He is a great captain, honestly. I don’t want to forget anyone (I have worked with) but he is up there as a captain with Maldini, John Terry and Sergio Ramos.”High praise from one of the game’s greatest ever managers. If Toffees fans were ever wondering whether Coleman could still cut it at the highest level, or if his time at Goodison Park had come to its natural end, then Ancelotti’s words may just have convinced them otherwise.
