Liverpool must turn Ben Godfrey interest into a genuine bid

Liverpool appear to finally be making a breakthrough in the transfer window with talks ongoing for the signing of Thiago but they are still yet to replace Dejan Loven in defence – might that change now?

What’s the word?

According to the ever-reliable James Pearce at The Athletic, the Premier League’s defending champions hold interest in relegated Norwich City colossus Ben Godfrey.

He claims that the Canaries centre-back is a player that the club have watched closely, though he wouldn’t come cheap this summer. Sky Sports claim the Championship outfit would want £50m for his signature.

However, if Jurgen Klopp isn’t convinced that he ‘ticks all the boxes,’ then he’ll press ahead with Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez.

Raw talent

This move would very much be shades of Gomez in the sense that the German would be dipping into the lower leagues for a young English talent who is still quite raw, but could thrive under the right guidance.

The 22-year-old played 30 times in the Premier League last term, averaging 4.9 clearances, 2.2 aerials won per game as well as managing a passing accuracy rate of nearly 90% from 55.3 passes each match, via WhoScored.

Many at Anfield may remember playing the Canaries on the opening day last season and Mo Salah devoured the young colossus with one goal, one assist, two dribbles and three key passes per SofaScore.

But he was paired alongside Grant Hanley rather than someone as good as Van Dijk, so don’t let that put you off his prospects whatsoever.

Godfrey has received plenty of praise in the past year for his performances too. His boss Daniel Farke claimed he was “playing without mistakes and that is outstanding” whilst Alex Neil believed “his competitive streak is really, really good, he is strong, aggressive and he can use the ball well so he has a lot to work with,” adding that “he has good scope to improve.”

The young England defender has even drawn comparisons to Rio Ferdinand due to his imposing physique and ball-playing abilities.

Whilst £50m is extortionate, the Reds shouldn’t look further than Godfrey to fill the void left behind by Lovren.

Spurs can upgrade Sissoko with swoop for Marseille’s Morgan Sanson

As Tottenham close in on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, chairman Daniel Levy could land a 1-2 sucker-punch on the rest of the Premier League with the addition of another midfielder.

What’s the word?

According to Le10 Sport, north London rivals Arsenal have entered the race for Marseille’s Morgan Sanson with the Ligue 1 outfit needing to push a few departures in order to garner some income.

It comes just a few weeks after it was reported that Spurs were leading the charge for the Frenchman – Le Phoceen claim that the 25-year-old’s exit to England is rather likely and that Marseille are wanting €35m (£31.5m) for his services.

Although no concrete offers have come in for Sanson, the Gunners’ interest should spark Levy into making his move.

Box-to-box upgrade

Yes, Jose Mourinho will have an array of midfield options following the imminent arrival of Hojbjerg, but that shouldn’t stop the Europa League-bound outfit from looking to bolster the squad even more.

Sanson is a perfect box-to-box type that would fit the Portuguese’s system to a tee with the incoming Saints man the ideal lynchpin to tie it all together.

Per WhoScored, the Marseille star has averaged 2.2 tackles, 1.5 dribbles, 1.4 shots and 1.1 key passes per appearance in Ligue 1 this term, which is better than fellow countryman Moussa Sissoko.

At 30 years of age, the Spurs man is coming towards the end of his career and his numbers for the campaign are hardly inspiring, given he’s managed just 1.3 tackles, 0.6 key passes and 0.5 shots per match, also via WhoScored.

If that’s not enough to convince, then Sanson’s comparisons to a PL rival should set pulses racing, one Birmingham Mail journalist believes Sanson is “like Ruben Neves but with an edge – if maybe not quite the same level of genius.”

He goes on to call him “outstanding” too, so Levy should absolutely consider a move for the Frenchman this summer.

Tottenham Hotspur: Alasdair Gold delivers verdict on Dennis Cirkin, bad news for Sessegnon [Opinion]

Tottenham’s summer signings have struggled to make the most of their first season in the Premier League.

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho has a strained relationship with Tanguy Ndombele, who is the club’s record signing, and their dispute has been well documented in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, Jack Clarke has largely failed to get many minutes under his belt at Leeds United and QPR, and Ryan Sessegnon has struggled for consistency this season.

Sessegnon seemed destined for greatness two years ago, but his career has taken a downturn ever since he arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

He suffered a hamstring injury while away on international duty with the England U-21 squad and barely featured under Mauricio Pochettino and Mourinho as a result.

The former Fulham starlet has only made six appearances in the Premier League all season.

According to Alasdair Gold, Mourinho sees some similarities with Ashley Cole, although he is reluctant to rely upon him in the defence.

To compound his problems even further, he was dropped in favour of young left-back Dennis Cirkin, who was on the bench at home to Everton.

Gold revealed that the Portuguese  admires the 18-year-old, which could be bad news for Sessegnon in the long-term.

With only five games left to play in the league, his chances of starting are looking even more remote, as Ben Davies has started every game since football returned last month, which means he will have to take every opportunity he gets to prove his worth.

Competition for places is always healthy and he is surely too talented to go to waste at Tottenham. But the emergence of Cirkin could mean he is now third choice left-back.

However, it is worth remembering Mourinho sold Adnan Januzaj as he failed to live up to his full potential during his time in charge of Manchester United.

While Sessegnon signed a six-year-deal when he moved to north London last summer, he will not want to suffer a similar fate next season.

Tottenham fans, do you think Mourinho should give Sessegnon another shot? Let us know down below!

Sunderland: Jack Baldwin offered contract by Bristol Rovers

League One side Bristol Rovers have offered a contract to Sunderland defender Jack Baldwin, according to Bristol LIVE.

With the 2019/20 season ending abruptly for the Black Casts, manager Phil Parkinson will now look to the summer months to address a number of pending decisions.

Parkinson’s first port of call will be to review a list of expiring player contracts that sees the likes of Baldwin set to leave this week.

The central defender, who spent the 2019/20 campaign on loan with League Two side Salford City, is now free to discuss terms with a new club as his deal comes to an end tomorrow.

Baldwin, who arrived at the Stadium of Light in the summer of 2018 from Peterborough United, made a total of 42 appearances for the Wearsiders before moving on loan to Salford.

Rovers, who will be looking to strengthen their squad this summer with manager Ben Garner seemingly keen to improve on their 14th-place finish in League One, have reportedly offered a deal to Baldwin.

Valued at a lowly sum of £293k by Transfermarkt, Rovers would be getting an assured option at centre-back should they complete a deal for Baldwin, whilst Sunderland boss Parkinson will be keen to bring in some new options in defence.

Sunderland fans have been through it all over the last few years and they are now set to see a whole host of squad changes this summer.

Baldwin’s exit is unlikely to cause huge fan upset given that he spent time away from the club, but Parkinson must ensure that he has enough cover in defence ahead of next season.

Jonathan David sends Tottenham promising transfer message

Reported Tottenham Hotspur target Jonathan David has sent a clear transfer message to Premier League clubs wanting to sign him, saying the English top-flight is “somewhere I would love to play”, in an interview as per The Guardian.

What did he say?

The report says that Spurs were keen on the attacker before the current situation in the United Kingdom, with The Express saying at the start of March that they were one of a number of Premier League sides monitoring him.

The Canada international was asked about a number of different topics by The Guardian, including being linked with other clubs following his fine form for Gent – he has scored 23 goals and provided a further 10 assists in 40 appearances in all competitions for the Belgian outfit this term.

The Greatest Bargains in Premier League history – How much did they cost?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

The 20-year-old said on a potential future move: “I just need to take a good step where I can make sure I am getting enough time on the pitch to keep developing. I don’t want to go somewhere and just stay on the bench so it’s about taking the right step.

“I want to become one of the best strikers in the world. That’s my goal. The Premier League is the best in the world and most competitive so obviously that is somewhere I would love to play in the future.”

Clear message to Daniel Levy

David obviously wants to play in England, and with Spurs needing back-up for Harry Kane during the next transfer window and The Express saying he could be available for just £20m, it seems like a bit of a no-brainer for the north London outfit.

They would be getting a young and promising forward who has proven in 2019/20 that he can both find the net and create.

The one issue could be that the Canadian says he doesn’t want to go somewhere and simply sit on the bench, and that could be a problem if he is brought in as a striker – he wouldn’t be displacing Kane in a one-up-top system.

The youngster is versatile though, and according to Transfermarkt he has played in a range of attacking positions this season, including as an attacking midfielder, a No.10 and on the wing.

He could even play upfront with the England captain if Jose Mourinho is willing to change formation.

This looks to be the sort of bargain deal Daniel Levy loves, and Spurs should try and get it done.

Unai Emery’s Arsenal sacking is laced with dramatic irony

When Unai Emery walked through the doors of the Emirates Stadium for the first time in May 2018, there was a glowing review from Ivan Gazidis.

In fact, the former Arsenal chief executive had words that a certain Arsene Wenger would have been excited to hear about himself.

“He has a fantastic record of success wherever he has gone and interestingly one of the noteworthy things about Unai’s teams in that they improve over time,” he said.

You look at that now and you can see the irony. Arsenal never improved over time and instead, they became worse, failing to win their final seven games under the former Sevilla coach.

It has been over a month since the Gunners last won and a variety of things said by the man now at AC Milan appear incredibly damning for Emery.

The meticulous planning behind his appointment now looks particularly strange too. A 100-page dossier was presented to the Kroenke’s as Gazidis admitted himself that it was a surprise.

“Perhaps there were a few rewrites necessary,” he noted. Indeed, the script has never really been followed since Wenger left and what’s happened since his disappearance from north London tells a sorry story.

For a period of time, however, Emery brought the Arsenal back that supporters all knew and loved. A 5-1 against Fulham was full of bustling energy, sensational attacking football and fluid transitions.

One of the goals, scored by Aaron Ramsey, was built upon the early philosophy the Spaniard adopted. Starting with the goalkeeper, the ball was played out from the back before a combination of tricks and flicks ended in a goal.

It was Emery-ball at its absolute finest. Unfortunately, it was seldom replicated thereafter.

The damning thing about that day was the fact Arsenal ended up conceding 21 shots to the Cottagers. That set the tone for what became a common theme in the final months of his tenure in N5.

The Islington club became one of the worst defensively in Europe. At one point, they’d conceded the most shots of anyone in the top five leagues on the continent.

If that Fulham game was the sign of fans getting their Arsenal back, it was also a quick glance of what was to come.

Upon being appointed, Gazidis had the following to say about the process involved in hiring the former PSG man:

“We had some clear criteria that we were looking for in our selection. The first was progressive, entertaining football, a personality that fits with Arsenal’s values and also a record of developing players, particularly young players through detailed tactical instruction and also through cultural demands, pushing players, demanding more from them.”

Emery may have brought through the likes of Bukayo Saka and Joe Willock into more prominent roles but progressive and entertaining was as far from the Spaniard as you could get.

[ad_pod ]

His personality didn’t fit Arsenal’s values and neither did his football. Ultimately, it was the wrong fit and his demise in the capital was hardly surprising.

Under Wenger, the Gunners played some of the most free-flowing and joyous football in the league. A mess in defence, it was an aspect that was never corrected by the now-departed manager and in fact, he took the club backwards.

This was meant to be a fresh start, time was willing to be given but with the clock ticking that quickly faded. The banners were back out and a rather empty stadium was the focal point of a lacklustre 2-1 defeat against Frankfurt.

The Europa League specialist was now even losing at his own game. There was only ever one way his tenure could end, and that was with him being sacked.

Emery was a gentleman, a humble and respectful 48-year-old who simply didn’t suit the club and the direction it wants to go in. But that final aspect of his personality was ultimately his downfall.

He became so focused on the opposition and the respect he was showing them that he seemingly forgot how to put his own team together. The analysis Gazidis spoke about when he took over had completely swamped him. There was no unity, the morale was shot to pieces and even the supporters stopped attending.

It’s a sad way for Emery’s time at the club to come to an end but pulling the plug now was undoubtedly the right option.

Who walks in next must be Arsenal’s true catalyst for change. More words once muttered by Gazidis, they must find someone who truly does fit the values. Again, those words are ironic. Wenger leaving was meant to the first catalyst but there has been a distinct lack of a positive difference since he did.

Will interim head coach Freddie Ljungberg be the one to bring back the good times? Only time will tell but the likes of Edu and Raul Sanllehi have a huge job on their hands.

They must do better than what was managed by Gazidis last year or even further uproar will be aimed at board level.

Real Madrid’s Zinedine Zidane responds to the Kylian Mbappe situation

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Zinedine Zidane faced the press in his pre-match conference and was asked to comment on Leonardo’s statements regarding Kylian Mbappe. The Real Madrid coach made a bold response, insisting on his words that he said earlier and decided not to back down in this situation.

What did he say?

A couple of days ago, Zidane was asked about Mbappe in one of his press-conferences and back then, the French boss reminded everyone that the youngster’s dream was always to play for Real Madrid.

But it seems that that comment ruffled a couple of feathers over at Paris Saint-Germain, and Leonardo came out with a response accusing Zidane of trying to rattle the team with his remarks.

Watch Spanish Football Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

Interestingly enough, even when confronted with those words, Zidane decided to insist on his own, stating that he can say whatever he wants and that he will continue to do so.

Here’s what he said in full:

“I’ve said nothing, just what the player said, that his dream was one day to play here. Everyone does what they want. I’ll not say anything else. I simply said what the player said one day, that his dream would be to wear the Real Madrid jersey. I say it again and I would say it every day. I have nothing more to say about Leonardo, I can say whatever I want.”

A transfer bound to happen?

The Mbappe to Real Madrid stories are nothing particularly new.
Every now and then, Los Blancos are linked with the teenage sensation, rated at £180m by Transfermarkt, and this is one of the transfers that just seem bound to happen at some point in the future.
But hearing Zidane not only talk about it so openly, but also standing firm behind his words even when confronted by Mbappe’s current team, could suggest there is definitely a story behind this.
Not to mention that Leonardo would not respond in a way that he did if he didn’t really feel threatened by Zidane’s own remark.
Deep down, the folks over at Paris Saint-Germain could be afraid that Mbappe’s departure is somehow written in the stars and there’s nothing much they can do about it except delay the inevitable.
The clock is ticking and Real Madrid may well be closer to getting their man with each passing second.
Now so more than ever.

Marcelo Bielsa’s late change at Hillsborough slammed by Leeds fans

Marcelo Bielsa introduced Liam Cooper for Helder Costa in the 76th minute of Leeds United’s Championship clash with Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday afternoon.

The substitution saw the Whites switch to a back three with their fit-again skipper slotting in alongside Ben White and Luke Ayling in defence.

However, the Yorkshire side could not find a late goal on the afternoon as they shared the points for a second successive match having drawn at Preston North End on Tuesday.

The club’s fans are already frustrated that their manager is not making more changes to his starting XI on a week-to-week basis.

And a number of the supporters were unhappy with the late alteration against Wednesday as Cooper replaced Costa.

Costa has actually been slammed by the fans for his form in recent weeks, but not too many could understand why a centre-back was introduced when their team were looking for a late goal at Hillsborough.
