Everton fans once again react negatively to club’s social media post

[ad_pod ]

The Everton fans are in no mood for a laugh and a joke at the moment.

Ahead of next week’s Premier League clash with Cardiff City, a tweet from Everton’s official account made a joke about Toffees goalkeeper Jordan Pickford recently becoming a father.

However, the Everton supporters were not having any of it.

The Merseyside outfit are on a rotten run of form at the moment, losing five of their last six matches in all competitions, including their last three in the league.

Many expected the team to make a challenge for the top-six this season, but they have not been victorious in the league since an unconvincing 1-0 success away to struggling Huddersfield Town at the end of next month.

Pl>ymaker FC’s Matchday with Max caught up with Jamaica’s women’s team. See what happened when he met the history makers in the video below…

As a result, there is simply no downplaying the importance of Tuesday’s trip to Cardiff, which will be Everton’s first match since they lost 1-0 at Watford on February 9.

Everton’s Twitter account are doing their best to raise the spirits at the moment, but the club’s supporters are just not interested. Earlier this week, fans trolled a Twitter post showing off Lucas Digne’s skills in training and once again, the club’s account has been targeted for abuse from unhappy supporters.

A selection of the Twitter reaction can be seen below:

West Brom fans hail Jake Livermore for latest performance

West Bromwich Albion made it five wins from their last six Championship matches with a 2-0 victory over Preston North End on Tuesday night.

Hal Robson-Kanu made the breakthrough in the sixth minute of the contest, before Jake Livermore doubled the home side’s advance just before the interval.

Preston had Darnell Fisher sent off as they attempted to respond in the second period, but the Baggies triumphed to move seven points clear at the top of the table.

And a lot of the club’s fans were delighted with Livermore’s performance.

Who the heck is that?! Can you name all of these obscure West Brom players…

Others, meanwhile, lavished praise on the team’s captain when he found the back of the net in the latter stages of the first period.

Livermore has now contributed two goals and four assists in 33 Championship appearances for Slaven Bilic’s side during the 2019/20 campaign.

Next up for the league leaders is a home game against Wigan Athletic on Saturday afternoon before facing Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium on March 7.

The Baggies are also still in the FA Cup, meanwhile, and will welcome Premier League opposition in the shape of Newcastle United to the Hawthorns on March 3.

The league is the bread and butter for the team this term, though, and they are currently sitting pretty at the top of the Championship table.

Meanwhile, a number of WBA fans had this to say on a recent Livermore omission.

Suggested solutions: How Everton can return to top form

[ad_pod ]

Everton have been in dire form in recent weeks.

Marco Silva is under pressure. The Times report that his job is safe, but the club have won just three games since the end of November – and it appears that they are ready to slide down the table.

The talent in the team is there, though. Silva is relatively young – he is 41 – and is seen as a progressive manager, but how can he stop the rot?

Football FanCast outline our suggested solutions for how Everton can instantly return to top form…

Learn to defend set-pieces

This is relatively basic and, really, it should go without saying. But Everton have been absolutely dire at defending free-kicks and corners.

A report from the Belfast Telegraph outlined just how bad the numbers are: Aymeric Laporte’s headed goal for Manchester City in their 2-0 win at Goodison Park in midweek was the 12th league goal Everton have conceded from a set-piece, and their 17th in all competitions. That number does not include penalties, either.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

Silva needs to stop this, and one obvious way to do so would be to ditch zonal marking and start going man-to-man at free-kicks and corners in a bid to stem a tide that is threatening to drown the Toffees.

If they continue to concede sloppy goals they will forever be on the back foot.

Stop playing Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been a beneficiary of Silva’s reign, and has made 24 appearances in all competitions, but he is not really good enough.

He has scored four goals in the top-flight, but he does not offer the presence of a proper target man nor the pace of a lithe No.9.

Against City, he offered precious little in his role up front; per WhoScored, he had a pass success rate of just 58%, was dispossessed three times and committed four fouls, the most of any player on the pitch.

The experiment of playing the 21-year-old must come to an end – Silva would be well advised to restore Richarlison to a centre-forward role where the Brazilian continually thrives, and place Calvert-Lewin back on the bench.

Get Jagielka back in the team

Phil Jagielka may be 36 but the Toffees could certainly use some experience and natural leadership right about now.

Silva confirmed, per HITC, before their FA Cup game against Millwall that the veteran centre-back was not yet fit to play but claimed that he could be in “one or two more weeks”.

Everton need to make sure that, as soon as he is fit, he is back in the team.

He has played twice for the club this season and they took points from both of those games, against Wolves – though he was sent off in that fixture – and Chelsea.

Restoring him into the XI could also facilitate a change to a five-at-the-back system that would allow Jagielka to slot in beside Kurt Zouma and Michael Keane, thus giving more freedom to the full-backs and adding an extra dimension to the club’s attack.

Newcastle United and Edin Dzeko seem beyond perfect for each other right now

Newcastle fans will be delighted to see Jamaal Lascelles commit his long-term future to the club.

The Newcastle captain put pen to paper on a new six-year contract at St. James Park with rumours circulating that Chelsea and Tottenham were keeping tabs on his situation. Lascelles has been a crucial player for the Magpies since joining from Nottingham Forest but had just six months remaining on his deal. Lascelles will now stay on Tyneside for the foreseeable future which will no doubt please their fans.

After extending his stay at the club, the defender admitted the squad needed to be strengthened. Newcastle remain in relegation trouble despite finally picking up their first win of the campaign. Indeed, with Rafael Benitez’s side struggling for goals, the Spaniard would be wise to target a new forward in January.

One man who should be on his shortlist is Roma superstar – Edin Dzeko. Valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, the Bosnian is no stranger to life in the Premier League after spending a few seasons with Manchester City. Dzeko racked up an impressive scoring record in England, lifting the Premier League title twice, before joining Roma after sliding down the pecking order on Eastlands.

The 32-year-old remains an important player for the Italian side and has already found the back of the net seven times this season. However, reports emerged that Dzeko was keen on a return to the Premier League – Newcastle should do everything in their power to bring him to St. James Park.

Dzeko is a world-class forward with expert movement and fantastic finishing ability. The Bosnia international is capable of leading the line and would slot seamlessly into Benitez’s 4-2-3-1 system. His ability to create chances and score goals out of nothing could be crucial as the Magpies look to steer away from the relegation zone.

If Benitez could convince the striker to move to Tyneside – Newcastle’s chances of survival would increase tenfold.

Newcastle fans, thoughts?

Vardy and Leicester City will provide another stern test for Wolves

Outside of the Premier League top six, Everton are arguably the most difficult opponents a newly-promoted side could face on the opening day of the new season.

However, Wolves were able to hold the Merseyside club to a draw after the match between the two teams ended 2-2, and Nuno Espirito Santo’s men may actually feel disappointed that they were not able to walk away with all three points having played the entire second half with an extra man.

Wolves, though, were still made to fight for that one point after going behind twice, and they could again be presented with another tricky game when they take on Leicester City at the King Power on Saturday.

The Breakdown

And at the heart of any potential Wolves downfall could be Jamie Vardy with Leicester boss Claude Puel confirming the England striker has a good chance of starting (via Leicester Mercury).

£18m-rated (via Transfermarkt) Vardy was only fit enough to make the substitutes’ bench in the Foxes’ 2-1 Premier League defeat to Manchester United, but he managed to find the back of the net after being introduced in the second half and will now undoubtedly cause Wolves problems when the two sides meet.

Vardy’s game is well known to largely consist of making runs in behind defenders and closing them down at every given opportunity, which is something Wolves’ back three will be dreading.

But, while Vardy can hurt Wolves, Nuno’s men should also fancy their chances going into the game with Leicester having looked defensively suspect against Manchester United.

The physicality of Wes Morgan and aerial prowess of Harry Maguire may see Raul Jimenez less effective in the air this time round.

However, should Nuno bring new signing Adama Traore into the side, the 22-year-old and the rest of Wolves’ wide players could really give Leicester’s full-backs problems with Ricardo Pereira, understandably, looking shaky at times against Manchester United.

Vardy’s potential return to Leicester’s starting XI is a huge boost for Puel and bad news for Wolves, but Nuno also has tools at his disposal which can hurt his managerial counterpart.

Burnley fans proud of Tottenham Hotspur’s Trippier

It is not hugely common for fans to praise a player that has chosen to leave their club, but on this occasion, Burnley supporters have expressed pride in Kieran Trippier. The right-back spent three years at Turf Moor before joining Tottenham Hotspur in 2015.Trippier struggled to hold down a regular place in the team at the North London outfit, but following Kyle Walker’s move to Manchester City last summer, the 27-year-old has received more opportunities. The full-back has made six Premier League appearances and one in the Champions League so far this season. On Sunday, England manager Gareth Southgate handed Trippier a place in the first XI for a 1-0 win over Lithuania. The Three Lions had already secured their place in next summer’s Russia World Cup with a 1-0 triumph over Slovenia in the first of two qualifiers, meaning that Southgate could afford to switch his team around.

Despite losing him two years ago, Burnley fans were happy to see Trippier perform for his country.

Tactical Focus – Arsenal v Manchester City

Going in to April, Chelsea have a ten point lead at the top of the English Premier League. Barring a catastrophic collapse they will win the title and give Antonio Conte his first trophy in English football.

This does not, however, mean that interest at the top of the table going in to the final stages of the season is at an end. The battle for Champions League qualification is very much still on going and could very well go to the final weekend of the season.

At the start of the campaign the media narrative largely surrounded the appointment of Pep Guardiola as the coach of Manchester City, with questions surrounding whether he would continue his successful career in England. These questions seemed largely answered in the opening weeks of the season as City swept all before them in impressive style. Although as the season wore on, the age and quality of the squad was called in to question as results suffered.

In recent weeks the form of City has stabilised, though they were eliminated in the last 16 of the Champions League by AS Monaco. Now Guardiola needs to refocus his squad for the final stretch of the season. Failure to win the league in his first season is excusable but failure to qualify for the Champions League would be catastrophic.

The story of the season so far for Arsenal could well mirror that of Manchester City apart from the early season optimism and with a Champions League exit to Bayern Munich calling in to question the entire ethos of the club.

Arsene Wenger is under considerable pressure to walk away at the end of the season and the continuation of his contract could hinge on Arsenal securing a top four finish. Having made qualification for the Champions League a fine art over the last decade, Wenger will be looking to extract the very best from his squad to save his job…

Manchester City need to dominate the final third

At the start of the season, when City were at their enthralling best, the key to their attacking game was the role given to David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne in the centre of the pitch. Playing nominally as central midfielders who would take the number 8 role in the side they found themselves acting as almost a double pivot in the number 10 role.

By operating in the centre of the final third in this way, Silva and De Bruyne were able to dominate the opposition and set the tempo of the game in City’s favour.

Arsenal tried to fix their midfield issues in the summer with the signing of the Swiss international Granit Xhaka but the midfielder has yet to impress as the holding midfielder for the North London club.

If City are able to dominate the central space between the Arsenal midfield and defensive lines with the likes of Silva and De Bruyne controlling the tempo of the game, then they should have enough attacking firepower to see off the challenge of Arsenal.

With Sergio Aguero to pin the central defenders back and the pace of Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane in wide areas City are a fearsome prospect for any opposition team.

Arsenal need to attack the City fullbacks

One of the biggest issues that Pep Guardiola has found with his City squad is the lack of quality in the fullback areas. The likes of Pablo Zabaleta, Bacary Sagna and Gael Clichy were once passable at the top level but as they have aged their qualities have dropped off significantly.

Now the lack of quality in the wide defensive areas is one of the biggest weaknesses of this City side.

It may be time for Arsene Wenger to revert to using the Chilean international forward Alexis Sanchez in a wide role to take advantage of this weakness. With Danny Welbeck and Oliver Giroud able to play as the lone striker, Wenger could afford to move Sanchez to the left where his pace and energy could be at its most effective.

The pace of Theo Walcott on the right could have a destabilising effect on the City defensive structure that would prevent City from being able to transition quickly from the defensive to the attacking phase.

If Arsenal are able to overload the wide areas with support from the fullbacks for Sanchez and Walcott then we could also see the attacking strength of City lessened, as Sane and Sterling will have to track back and support the defensive phase far more than they would otherwise be comfortable with.

The question for Arsenal, however, will be whether to play the mercurial German international Mesut Ozil in the number ten position when an extra central midfielder could provide more strength to the team structure. Playing Ozil wide is not a realistic option given his lack of pace and desire to work back in the defensive phase.

Conclusion

The lack of European involvement for these clubs should see them start to adjust and plan for next season even at this early stage.

Expect to see Guardiola and City look to dominate in the attacking phase even more as the season draws to an end. The pace in the wide areas should be coupled with the presence of Silva and De Bruyne in the centre or the half spaces and opposition defences will be hard pushed to prevent them from breaking through.

Arsenal on the other hand have to prove to the watching fanbase that the players are still behind their coach and that they are capable of consistently playing the kind of football that brought the club so many admirers over the course of Wengers tenure.

Three points in this match will go a long way to securing Champions League qualification. The pressure is on.

3 reasons why Sadio Mane leaving Southampton is no tragedy at all – Agreed?

Mane is a good footballer, there is no question about it, but is he the all conquering superstar that he has been made out to be?

The 23-year-old looks set to join Liverpool in a major £34 million deal.

The South Coast club have a history of recovering from the loss of top stars with the likes of Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Morgan Schneiderlin all having moved on without causing too much trouble to the club.

The main issues around those players leaving were that they were crucial members of the first team and seemed irreplaceable, but can the same be said for Saido Mane?

Here are the Transfer Tavern’s top THREE reasons why the departure of Sadio Mane from Southampton would be far from a tragedy for the Saints and their fans…..

[ffc-gallery]

PRESS THE IMAGE BELOW TO SEE THE THREE REASONS!

[/ffc-gallery]

Consistency

Sadio Mane is quite possibly the most frustrating footballer to watch in the Premier League at the moment, in one week he will bag the quickest hat-trick in Premier League history whilst the next week he can spend the entire match spinning around on the edge of the area before falling over his own feet.

This is a trait that has not gone un-noticed by his superiors, after Saints memorable 4-2 win over Man City towards the end of the season manager, Ronald Koeman, called out Mane for his lack of consistency and told the Senegalese forward that he needed to improve.

His attitude

Another element of Mane’s game that Koeman has had to reign the winger in over on a number of occasions over the last couple of seasons.

In Koeman’s first season at the club Saints were awarded a penalty, which the manager had told his side James Ward-Prowse was to take. Mane didn’t find this quite to his liking and decided that he would take it and went about arguing his side of the case over the penalty spot.

This prompted Koeman to explode on the touchline and criticise his attitude in his post-match interviews.

The money

£34 million is the price tag that Saints will get for Mane.

It is far from likely that should Mane leave that it will be for that much but it will not be for peanuts, somewhere in the region of £25m-£35m which, going by Saints’ proven track record of reinvestment and successful scouting, could well lead to the club progressing further.

So Saints fans, what do you think? How much damage would Mane leaving really cause?

After signing Gonzalez on August 23, Gotham went on to win the NWSL title, with the Ex-Real Madrid attacker playing a key role in their success during the regular season and in their historic playoff run.

Speaking to reporter Marta Grinan of AS, Gonzalez spoke on the level of competition in the NWSL compared to that of Europe – specifically, Barcelona and the Champions League.

Gonzalez scored the game-winning goal in the NWSL final Saturday, leaping all five-foot-three of her into the air to get a brilliant header off in stoppage-time during the first half.

Now, she's made an incredible claim about the competition level within the league, stating that it's on the level of UEFA Champions League matches 'every' time.

WHAT GONZALEZ SAID

"One of the biggest differences with the Spanish League, which is a great League, is that here all the games, absolutely all of them, are like a Champions League game, at the highest level. In Spain there are some games that you can win four or five to zero, that your physical wear and tear is normal, that you have everything under control…"

"Here every game is like playing against Barça, which is the best team in the Spanish League: your level has to be the maximum, your physical demand is the maximum, and that happens weekend after weekend"

"Afterwards, the big difference is control, in Spain we have a lot of control over the games, the times, when to pause, when to attack and when not to. Here they look so physically superior that it's all about transitions"
