Leeds should be ‘braced’ for Phillips bids

‘Big bids’ could arrive for Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips after the European Championships, Kevin Phillips has told Football Insider.

The lowdown

Phillips has started all four of England’s games at the tournament so far, helping Gareth Southgate’s side reached the quarterfinals.

On his major tournament debut against Croatia in the group stages, he assisted Raheem Sterling’s winning goal.

He also shone in the Round of 16 victory over Germany, recording 11 ball recoveries – the most by an England player in a Euros match since Tony Adams (13) in 1996 (via Opta).

Phillips, who has three years left on the contract he penned back in 2019, is valued at £27million by Transfermarkt.

The latest

The former Premier League Golden Boot winner warned Leeds that they could have a ‘battle’ on their hands, with clubs surely impressed by Phillips’ performances.

“As much as Leeds fans won’t want to hear this, brace yourselves for a couple of big bids after the Euros,” he said.

“He’s been fantastic and I thought he was outstanding against Germany.

“Leeds will face a battle to keep him if some of the big clubs come in for him”

The verdict

Leeds fans should indeed be worried, because Phillips ticks the boxes for a side like Manchester United, who are in need of a high-calibre signing in the middle of the park.

He’s defensively solid – with 2.6 tackles and 1.6 interceptions per game last season – and also has a magnificent passing range, as demonstrated by 4.7 accurate long balls per 90 (via WhoScored).

And, importantly for the top sides, he’s also building his experience on the biggest stages.

You’d expect Leeds to do absolutely everything in their power to keep him, but it certainly wouldn’t be a surprise if bids start flying in when he returns from England duty.

In other news, Leeds have taken a significant step towards a midfield signing.

No segundo gol do Macaé ficou nítida a desorganização do Cruz-maltino.

Bajans go under

KINGSTON – Barbados and Jamaica combined to produce a sustained, electrifying display of hitting in their top-of-of-the-table Zone “A” Red Stripe Bowl zone clash at Sabina Park here on Sunday

26-Aug-2002KINGSTON – Barbados and Jamaica combined to produce a sustained, electrifying display of hitting in their top-of-of-the-table Zone “A” Red Stripe Bowl zone clash at Sabina Park here on Sunday.Barbados, however, had to settle for second best, their demise caused principally by their tardiness and raggedness in the field. They gallantly took up the challenge in pursuit of a target of 308, but they were physically and psychologically set back even before they faced a ball.Having spent half-hour more that the allocated three-and-half hours to deliver the full 50 overs, Barbados were docked three overs that surely proved crucial in the final analysis. It was more than a sterling effort that they were able to get up to as many as 287 for seven, thanks mainly to the aggression of in-form Floyd Reifer and Philo Wallace, whose support came from Kurt Wilkinson, Ryan Hinds, Vasbert Drakes and Sulieman Benn, who was sent in at No. 5.But it was always going to be a tall order for last year’s runners-up, who lost by 20 runs. It relegated them to second place in the group and gives them a semifinal meeting against defending champions Guyana.”If we had got those three overs, we would have won the game for sure,” Barbados captain Courtney Browne said. “There were a lot of interruptions, especially from Jamaica. There were so many things. The ball had to be changed.”I can’t really bash my players for a slow over-rate. We worked very hard to get in the overs, but with all the interruptions, we just couldn’t get them in.”Browne, however, made no excuses for their sloppiness in the field and the 17 wides and 16 no-balls they gifted to the Jamaicans.”Our extras and our cricket beat us. Our fielding wasn’t good.”Asked to score at 6.55 an over after they were penalised because of their tardy over-rate, Barbados needed a rollicking start from Wallace and he duly delivered by thumping 44 off 38 balls before he was prised out by Ricardo Powell’s excellent running catch on the deep mid-wicket boundary from off-spinner Gareth Breese’s second ball.Barbados scored at almost seven while Wallace was in and after Wilkinson’s supporting innings of 39 ended, Ryan Hinds, with another solid 46 and the explosive Reifer kept the match alive with a third wicket stand of 88 in 19 overs. In marching to his third successive half-century, Reifer smashed three sixes, two of them straight down the ground and to the back of the big George Headley Stand. His 72 off 88 balls was another example of his dominance at this level and he kept Barbados in the match until he was stumped from a flat delivery from Powell when 68 were still needed from less than five overs.Faced with quality opposition for the first time in the tournament, Barbados’ bowlers ran into batsmen who were never afraid to attack and the early fireworks set the tone for Jamaica’s impregnable total.Even the usually mean left-arm spinner Benn was roughly treated and Barbados had to use as many as eight bowlers to contain Chris Gayle, Leon Garrick, Wavell Hinds, Marlon Samuels and Ricardo Powell.Half-centuries from Garrick (74 off 127 balls) and Hinds (58 off 64 balls) were the leading contributions; but the most enterprising batting was provided by Gayle (49 off 44 balls), Samuels (40 off 34 balls) and Powell (29 not out off 17 balls) after Jamaica elected to bat first. With the batsmen in such a rampaging mood, the fielders were under immense pressure and were constantly drawn into errors. The ground fielding was ragged at times; there were far too many over-throws, the returns to the ‘keeper were often inaccurate and there was a dropped catch by one of the safest men in the field. It was put down by Reifer at slip when he parried Gayle’s offering from a difficult delivery from Corey Collymore to his left in a manner that would have pleased Oliver Kahn, Fabian Barthez or any of the world’s other top goalkeepers. It wasn’t a chance that proved costly. Gayle added only five more runs, but by then he had given Jamaica the perfect start with adventurous strokes that would have made the Bajans tremble in their boots. He repeatedly charged the fast bowlers with success and an one occasion he deposited Pedro Collins over long-off and into the Air Jamaica Stand.Collins had to be promptly removed from the attack after his first three overs went for 27 and Collymore and Vasbert Drakes came on only to temporarily halt the flow of runs. The first ten overs between them yielded 31 runs and included the wicket of Gayle, who Collymore bowled in a spell in which he appeared to have developed a slight stomach problem. After the opening stand of 80 in 14.3 overs, Collymore and Drakes were only able to stem the run-spree for a brief period when Garrick and Hinds were trying to establish themselves.Garrick followed Gayle’s example by using his feet to the fast men at times and Hinds grew in confidence as their partnership developed to 102 in 20.2 overs before it was ended by Bradshaw’s stunning, jumping right-handed catch at mid-wicket that accounted for Garrick. The mayhem, however, did not stop and Jamaica lashed 125 runs in the last 15 overs.

West Zone batsmen pile on the agony for East

For the second day running, West Zone kept piling on the runs in the Duleep Trophy match against East Zone at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata

Staff Reporter10-Apr-2002For the second day running, West Zone kept piling on the runs in the Duleep Trophy match against East Zone at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. At close of play on the second day, West Zone were 526/6 with Nayan Mongia (13*) and Sairaj Bahutule (34*) at the crease.Resuming at the overnight score of 274/1, West Zone added 252 runs in the 90 overs bowled on the day, losing five wickets. It was another nightmare of a day for the East Zone bowlers as they struggled in conditions extremely conducive to batsmen at the much-famed Eden Gardens.Nilesh Modi was the first batsman to be dismissed on the second day, trapped in front of the wicket by Sanjay Raul. Modi made 118 runs off 372 balls, striking 13 boundaries. Kanitkar and Modi added 320 runs for the second wicket partnership.Hirshikesh Kanitkar was distinctly unlucky to miss out on his double hundred, bowled by Sanjay Raul after making 197 runs off 301 balls. The former India international struck two dozen boundaries and two sixes in his 433-minute long stay in the middle.Sitanshu Kotak and Kaushik Aphale added 106 runs for the fourth wicket, with both the batsmen reaching the half-century mark. East Zone bowlers found some luck in a brief period of the second day, picking up three quick wickets.Veteran left-arm spinner Utpal Chaterjee picked up the wickets of Kotak (50) and Amol Majumdar (10). Aphale (51) was cleaned up by off-spinner Sourasish Lahiri. In the post-tea session, Mongia and Bahutule dropped anchor and all they could manage was a mere 55 runs for the seventh wicket partnership in 24.2 overs. Chatterjee (50-14-132-2), Lahiri (46-10-116-1) and Raul (39-5-90-2) tried their very best on a day when batting reigned supreme.

Bull urges Guedes to stay at Valencia over Wolves - Exclusive

Wolves could well be on the hunt for a new winger this summer if Bruno Lage wants to play his favoured 4-4-2 formation, but Wolves legend Steve Bull does not want to see Goncalo Guedes at Molineux after suggesting he would only be a reserve.

Last season saw Wolves hampered by injuries across their whole squad but when they have everyone fit, they boast a wealth of options in the wide areas with the likes of Pedro Neto, Daniel Podence and Adama Traore the standout players.

It felt like the football and ideas on the pitch were becoming a bit stale so with a new manager at the helm he may look to freshen things up and with talk of Traore leaving this summer, they could potentially be replacing him with Guedes.

The Valencia winger is a Portuguese international and he was in red hot form in La Liga last season as he netted five times and registered six assists, however, despite his qualities Bull would rather he stayed in Spain than join Wolves this summer, as he explained exclusively to Football FanCast:

“Why would he want to come from a well-established side where he’s making his mark and come to Wolves and maybe play with the reserves?

“I think he should stay where he is and keep doing what he’s doing, but Wolves will keep him on their radar and say we want the first option to buy him if Valencia were to offload him.”

Guedes would bring different skills to Wolves as their three established wingers are all about, getting to the byline and getting a cross into the box but Guedes offers more of a goal threat as he likes to beat a man and get a shot away.

It could prove to be a smart signing as he could potentially take some of the burden off of Raul Jimenez’s shoulders when he eventually returns from the head injury he sustained last November, and with a market value of £22.5 million it would appear to be a good piece of business.

Court directs PCB to hold ICA elections in seven weeks

Justice Ali Nawaz Chowhan of the Lahore High Court (Rawalpindi Bench) has ruled that ad hocism in Islamabad Cricket Association cannot be allowed to continue , therefore it would be proper if elections are organised by the Pakistan Cricket Board within seven weeks. The judge dismissed the petition of Jawadul Hassan in which he had prayed that the PCB’s decision of appointing an ad hoc body to run ICA affairs be declared void, to allow the dismissed office-bearers to continue working and to restrain the PCB/ICA from interfering with the smooth running of the association.”It will be proper if the Pakistan Cricket Board arranges for the elections of the new members representing the territory of Islamabad within a period of seven weeks from today,” the judge said. The judge observed that an ad hoc committee was not expected to remain in that position for an indefinite period. “In this case, as it is seen that the ad hoc committee is functioning since Oct 26, 2000 and the status quo has brought about bickerings which are not at all good for the game of cricket and which itself was taken as a ground for suspension of the membership of the petitioner.”Justice Chowhan ordered that status quo with respect to the present arrangement be allowed to continue. He said that in matters of finance, the ICA ad hoc committee will however have to seek permission from the PCB chairman before withdrawing any money.

Leeds’ move for Perraud in serious doubt

Leeds United’s potential summer signing of left-back Romain Perraud looks set to ‘collapse’, according to a fresh report which emerged on Tuesday evening.

The Lowdown: Leeds keen on Perraud

With Ezgjan Alioski’s future up in the air at Elland Road, Marcelo Bielsa is expected to bring in a new left-back in the summer transfer window.

A host of players have been linked with moves to Leeds, but Perraud has arguably been seen as the front-runner to make the switch, having impressed for Stade Brest.

The 23-year-old made 36 appearances in Ligue 1 last season, showing his attacking quality with three goals and seven assists.

The Latest: Move set to collapse?

According to Football Insider, however, Leeds’ move for Perraud is now in serious doubt, with the Whites ready to ‘explore alternative targets’.

A Whites source has allegedly told the outlet there is frustration at the asking price Brest have demanded for the Frenchman, wanting between £15million-£18million for his services.

The Verdict: Time to look at other options

The news is a setback for Leeds, considering Perraud seemed to tick many boxes, but they may have to turn their attention to other players now.

Ajax’s Nicolas Tagliafico looks another strong option at left-back, possessing a wealth of experience and winning 27 caps for Argentina.

There is also a lingering chance that Alioski could stay put, which could make the need to sign a new left-back less important, and save funds for signings in other areas.

Watford handed boost in Ferguson pursuit

Watford have been handed a huge boost in their bid to bring Lewis Ferguson to Vicarage Road this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Daily Record, who claim that the 21-year-old has stunned Aberdeen by handing in a transfer request shortly after the club rejected a Watford bid for Ferguson – something which the midfielder’s agent Bill McMurdo claimed was disappointing.

McMurdo said: “I can confirm that Lewis has handed in a written transfer request to Aberdeen. When he signed the extension to his contract, he made it clear that he saw his future in the English Premier League.

“An English Premier League club has now made an offer, which has been rejected, but the club involved haven’t been given an asking price, which is disappointing.”

Xisco will be buzzing

The news that Ferguson has informed Aberdeen of his desire to move to Watford is something that will have left Cristiano Giartetta delighted, as the transfer request very much forces the Scottish Premiership side’s hand in moving the player on this summer.

Indeed, the development is also sure to have Xisco Munoz buzzing, as the Scotland U21 international would very much appear to be a fine addition to the Spaniard’s midfield ahead of their Premier League campaign next season.

Over the £2.7m-rated central midfielder’s 35 league appearances for Stephen Glass’ side this term, he scored nine goals, provided two assists and created three big chances, as well as making an average of 1.2 interceptions, 1.8 tackles and 0.9 key passes per game, culminating in an average SofaScore match rating of 7.19 – ranking him as the club’s best performer in the Scottish top flight.

However, at present, Aberdeen appear to be firmly against the idea of letting Ferguson leave Pittodrie this summer, with the club issuing a statement suggesting that Watford’s original offer for the 21-year-old was “insulting,” before going on to claim that the £3k-per-week man remains an “integral part of Stephen Glass’s squad.”

Although, as is typically the case when players demand a transfer, a move to Watford would now appear imminent for the midfielder whom Derek McInnes dubbed “outstanding,” with it simply being a matter of Giaretta negotiating a reasonable price with Aberdeen in order to get the deal over the line.

Sadio Mane was awful in LFC win vs WBA

Liverpool kept their top-four hopes alive in remarkable fashion as Alisson headed an injury-time winner for Jurgen Klopp’s side against West Brom on Sunday afternoon.

The Reds found themselves 1-0 down against Sam Allardyce’s side after Hal Robson-Kanu’s impressive finish but levelled before half-time from an equally well-taken goal from Mohamed Salah.

Despite dominating possession, the Merseyside outfit were struggling to find the breakthrough against a resolute Baggies defence in the second half and looked on track to drop a costly two points, until Alisson popped up with a superb header from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s last gasp corner.

The result leaves Klopp’s side just one point behind fourth-placed Chelsea with two games remaining, so there is plenty for Liverpool fans to celebrate after the late winner, but this must not shift the focus from what was another disappointing display from Sadio Mane.

As per SofaScore, the Senegal international would earn a shocking 6.3/10 rating for his performance, which was comfortably the lowest of any Liverpool player to feature in the game.

The former Southampton man was left out against Manchester United in midweek, much to his disgust, and would have perhaps have been left on the bench again at the Hawthorns if not for Diogo Jota’s season-ending injury.

During the game, Mane would fail to register a single shot on target or successful dribble, as he failed to test Sam Johnstone from Thiago’s cut back in the first half, a chance you certainly would have expected him to take last season.

The 29-year-old has just three Premier League goals in 2021 to his name and has recently spoken about his disappointing return in front of goal this season, but showed little improvement against Sam Allardyce’s side.

Mane, who joined Liverpool for £34m, looks completely devoid of confidence and was incredibly wasteful in possession, losing the ball on 17 occasions during the game, whilst he also would win just two of his 15 duels during the game, suggesting that he was very much second-best against the West Brom defence.

It was another worryingly poor performance from the winger, and he certainly proved Klopp’s recent decision to leave him out to be right, but in the absence of Jota, he will need to perform a lot better in the final two league fixtures, or he risks costing the Reds a Champions League spot for next season.
