Leics win despite Wood, Balcombe blitz

Leicestershire beat promotion hopefuls Hampshire by 126 runs despite a swashbuckling last-wicket stand of 168

24-Aug-2012
ScorecardLeicestershire secured their second win of the season, beating promotion hopefuls Hampshire by 126 runs despite a swashbuckling last-wicket stand of 168 between Chris Wood and David Balcombe.Wood smashed a maiden first-class century off 80 balls and finished unbeaten on 105 as Balcombe was finally bowled by Nathan Buck for 73 off 70 balls. Leicestershire opener and part-time legspinner Will Jones took three wickets, with Matthew Hoggard and Wayne White claiming two apiece. The win lifted Leicestershire off the bottom of the table.Hampshire resumed at 77 for 4, still 363 runs behind, and negotiated the first ten overs of the morning with very few alarms, moving the score on to 109. Then, in the space of four balls, the game dramatically changed as three wickets fell for one run.Leicestershire captain Hoggard called up Jones for a spell at the Pavilion End and the 22-year-old responded by taking two wickets with the final two balls of his second over. Nightwatchman James Tomlinson popped up a catch to Matt Boyce at short leg and Sean Ervine was bowled as he tried to cut a delivery that kept low.Michael Bates then bagged his second duck of the match when he was bowled by White in the next over as Hampshire collapsed to 110 for 7. Their woes continued, with Jones claiming his third wicket – and career-best figures – when Liam Dawson charged down the pitch at him and was stumped one run short of his half-century.A direct hit on the stumps by Hoggard from mid-wicket ran out Kabir Ali but Leicestershire’s victory charge was spectacularly halted by the last-wicket pair of Wood and Balcombe, who suddenly unleashed a barrage of boundaries in an astonishing partnership.Wood raced to 50 off 37 balls and Balcombe, dropped at slip by Michael Thornely on 6, reached his half-century off 47 balls. The blitz continued, with the shell-shocked hosts appearing to have little idea of how to end the carnage, and the next landmark was Wood’s century off 80 balls with two sixes and 15 fours.Another six by Balcombe off Hoggard sent the sides into a delayed lunch with Hampshire on 305 for 9 and the stand worth 159 in just 20 overs. But Leicestershire finally clinched the win in the third over after lunch, Buck bowling Balcombe for 73 as Hampshire were dismissed for 314.The 23 points the Foxes collected takes them off the bottom of the table above Glamorgan and Gloucestershire, who both have a game in hand.

Surrey downed by Key's Kent

17-Jun-2012
ScorecardKent got off the mark in the Friends Life t20 with a convincing eight-wicket victory over Surrey at Beckenham. Led by Rob Key, who hit an unbeaten 51, and Darren Stevens, whose 43 not out came off just 25 balls and included four sixes, the hosts cantered home with 22 deliveries to spare after Surrey could only muster 116 for 7 in their 20 overs.Surrey, who won the toss and elected to bat, struggled to make any real impression against a skilful Kent attack. Had Gary Wilson, who hit an unbeaten 53 off 43 deliveries, not been dropped twice the visitors’ card would have been even more sorry looking.Jason Roy slapped the first ball of the match to extra cover where Key took the catch, and three overs later, Rory Hamilton-Brown departed for 7 as Surrey found themselves 25 for 2 at the end of the Powerplay. In the eighth over, Steven Davies cleared the fine leg boundary with a flick off Stevens for six but with Tom Maynard lofting Adam Ball’s first delivery to Matt Coles, who took a good catch running in from long-on, the visitors were 46 for 3 at the halfway mark.Davies departed in the 11th over, beaten by Sam Billing’s throw to the non-striker’s end from deep midwicket. When Matthew Spriegel, backing away to cut, went caught behind, Wilson was joined in the middle by Zafar Ansari with Surrey in some trouble at 62 for 5.However, the visitors were given hope by a stirring sixth-wicket rearguard, which produced 51 in 38 deliveries. Wilson, on 17, had a let-off when he was dropped at long-off from the bowling of Ball and just after reaching his half-century he was put down again, this time at deep midwicket, though not before Ansari had holed out to deep fine leg for 15.In reply, Kent were handed an excellent start by Billings and Key, who combined for 40 in six overs for the first wicket. Billings, shuffling across his stumps to Jade Dernbach, departed lbw for 18 and Azhar Mahmood was then stumped off Ansari but Key and Stevens put the result beyond doubt with an unbeaten third-wicket stand of 69 in eight overs.Stevens swept Ansari for a six and deposited Murali Kartik over long-on for another before completing victory with a straight maximum off Ansari.

Canada bounce back with win over PNG

A round-up of matches on the second day of the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifiers

Shakti Gauchan took a hat-trick in Nepal’s victory against Denmark•ICC/Thusith Wijedoru

Group ACanada notched their first win of the qualifiers by holding on to beat Papua New Guinea by six runs at the ICC Global Cricket Academy in Dubai. Canada raced away to 38 from the first 3.3 overs, but were slowly pegged back by some economical bowling from Mahuru Dai and Hitolo Areni, who both finished with 1 for 27 from their four overs. Nitish Kumar anchored Canada’s innings with 57 from 44 balls while Hiral Patel chipped in with 34. PNG got off to a steady start in their chase, led by opener Asad Vala, who made 52. But they allowed the asking rate to climb too far and left their final assault a little too late. Despite 50 runs from the last five overs, they fell agonisingly short.Blistering half-centuries from Jamie Atkinson and Irfan Ahmed propelled Hong Kong to an eight-wicket win over Bermuda, their first of the tournament, at the ICC Global Cricket Academy in Dubai. Chasing 162, the pair savaged Bermuda’s attack, adding 113 together from just 12 overs after the loss of opener Babar Hayat for 6 in the first over. Ahmed perished on 50 to the medium pace of Janeiro Tucker, but Atkinson made sure there would be no last-minute stumble, finishing the match in style with a six of Kamau Leverock. So savage was their assault, that four of the six bowlers Bermuda used had economy-rates in the double-digits. In all, Atkinson’s 87 took just 55 balls and contained 13 fours and two sixes. Bermuda posted 161 for 5 on the back of a run-a-ball 43 from captain David Hemp and a late assault from Leverock (18*) and Tucker (31 from 19) that saw 73 runs come off the last six overs.Afghanistan scrambled home with two-balls to spare to beat Netherlands by four wickets. The Dutch posted 159 courtesy of Alexei Kervezee’s 58 from 43-balls. Michael Swart also made 22 from 16-balls opening the batting. Afghanistan’s chase was led by a partnership of 58 between Nawroz Mangal, who made a 19-ball 26 and Mohammad Shahzad: his 54 with eight fours seeing his side home, despite 2 for 12 from Mudassar Bukhari. Nine were needed from the final over but two fours from the bat of Noor Ali Zadran saw Afghanistan over the line.Shakti Gauchan took 4 for 20, including a hat-trick, as Nepal produced their second win in two matches after bowling Denmark out for 82. Denmark has been 58 for 2 but their collapse left them with no chance as Pradeep Airee almost knocked off the target himself. He plundered seven fours and four sixes in making 65 from 43-balls as Nepal won by nine wickets with seven overs to spare, Airee finishing the game in fine style with a big six.Group BItaly made it two wins in two games as they stopped United States of America short by eight runs at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. USA’s chase of 138 suffered an early blow when their captain Sushil Nadkarni was caught behind off the first delivery of the innings bowled by Gareth Berg. Vince Pennazza tied USA down, giving only 11 runs off four overs and claiming two wickets. Damian Crowley chipped in with three strikes and despite an unbeaten 35 from Asif Khan, USA managed only 129 for 8. Carl Sandri had earlier smashed four sixes on his way to an unbeaten 49 off 28 deliveries to help Italy recover from 26 for 3 and post 137 for 6.Ireland responded to yesterday’s surprise defeat to Namibia with a comprehensive victory over Kenya. Read the full report here.Roger Mukasa made a run-a-ball 45 to set up Uganda’s three-wicket win over Oman. Chasing 129 Uganda took until the last over to reach their target with Arthur Ziraba making 26 from 25 balls. Hemal Mehta conceded 16 from his four overs but his tight spell wasn’t enough after Oman failed to capatalise on several of their batsman getting good starts. Zeeshan Siddiqui reached 30 from 15 balls but he was run out and nobody else could produce a meaningful contribution to guide the innings.Louis van der Westhuizen blasted a century as Namibia made it two wins out of two with a comfortable 49-run win over Scotland. Somerset secure semi-final berth

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details Roelof van der Merwe blasted 32 off 16 balls and took 1 for 25 in Somerset’s win•Associated Press

Somerset’s captain Alfonso Thomas bowled two strangling spells to ensure his side beat Warriors and qualified for the semi-finals of the Champions League Twenty20. Warriors’ loss meant their net run-rate fell below that of Royal Challengers Bangalore and they became the second South African team, after Cape Cobras, to bow out of the tournament in two days.Ironically, it was the performance of three South Africa-born players that contributed most to Somerset’s victory. Thomas’ 2 for 16, Craig Kieswetter’s unbeaten 56 and Roelof van der Merwe’s all-round effort closed the door on Warriors. With the ball turning, and not coming on to the bat, Warriors had to be careful not to fall too far behind the required run-rate. They slipped in the middle stages but it was only in the 19th over – with 23 runs needed off 12 balls – that the match went beyond their grasp. Thomas bowled slower balls throughout, and when he removed big-hitting Craig Thyssen and Wayne Parnell in the same over, the task became too great for Warriors. They had started positively, as Ashwell Prince and JJ Smuts scored 24 runs in the first three overs. Prince was the first batsman undone by the lack of pace but Smuts formed a solid partnership with Ingram. They battled through a lean patch but struggled to find the boundary, especially against Thomas and young Adam Dibble, who bowled a tight second spell after conceding 13 runs in his first over. After steering Warriors to 79 in the 12th over, however, both Ingram and Smuts were dismissed in the space of five balls and the new Warriors batsmen could not keep up. Johan Botha, batting at No. 5, tried to take Steve Kirby on but sliced a slow and wide ball high to Arul Suppiah in the deep, who put it down. Three balls later, Botha did the same thing and was caught at long-off.Nicky Boje and Thyssen were left to score 46 runs from 27 balls. Both tried a few shots but with Somerset’s bowlers not giving much away, they were unable to set-up the win. The margin of defeat was a sizeable 12 runs in the end.Warriors had started the game brightly, with the wicket of Peter Trego, who was caught behind in the first over after Lonwabo Tsotsobe created pressure with his short of a length deliveries. That good work was completely undone by Wayne Parnell in the second over. Parnell bowled a poor line, conceded 13 runs, and did not bowl for the rest of the innings.Kieswetter took advantage of Parnell’s wayward leg-side line but it was van der Merwe who sunk his teeth into his countrymen, taking 16 runs off Tsotsobe’s second over. Somerset’s acceleration prompted Botha to change the pace and he introduced left-arm spinner Smuts, who bowled too short in his first over. van der Merwe caned Smuts for two more fours but succumbed to his attacking instinct, top-edging a slog sweep to midwicket to fall for 32 off 16 balls. Botha and Boje took control between overs seven and ten, giving away 18 runs and only one boundary, as they tied Kieswetter and James Hildreth down.Rusty Theron started his spell with a wide ball that was hit through point for four but recovered well, with fuller and slower deliveries that could not be punished. Botha also juggled his spinners to good effect but four shots spoiled his effort: Kieswetter’s pull over midwicket off Botha, Jos Buttler’s two sixes off Boje – the second of which was the second biggest of the tournament – and Buttler’s straight smack over the sightscreen off Smuts.Tsotsobe and Theron had to bowl at the death and used variations such as cutters and slower balls. Most of their deliveries were on target but Kieswetter punished anything that wasn’t. He hit boundaries in three of the last four overs, and was the reason Somerset were able to score 36 runs off them.

Fresh start for world champions

ESPNcricinfo previews the first ODI between West Indies and India in Port of Spain

The Preview by Siddhartha Talya05-Jun-2011Match factsMonday, June 6, Port of Spain
Start time 0900 (1300 GMT)Suresh Raina will be leading India in their first ODI after the World Cup victory•Associated PressBig PictureIt’s their first ODI assignment as world champions, and India are fielding a second-string team. The IPL has won out over West Indies in terms of player priority, but will the hosts be able to make the Indians pay for their decision? When India and West Indies played for the first time after their meeting in the 1983 World Cup final, the Indians were taught a bitter lesson in a 5-0 thrashing by the still pre-eminent team in world cricket then. Replicating that is beyond the present West Indies outfit, but they promise a closely-fought series, boosted by the return of Dwayne Bravo. If the only Twenty20 international was anything to go by, the West Indies batting was vulnerable against spin, a continuation of its problems against the slow bowlers from the Pakistan series. The spin-friendly pitch at the Queen’s Park Oval made it worse for them, and their woes could recur if the surface plays the same. There is much curiosity off the field, though. Chris Gayle made a glitzy appearance in the crowd for the Twenty20, and kept us guessing with his tweets, hinting that things vis-à-vis his return were shaping up for the better. He’s not been picked for the first two ODIs, but there’s no doubting the impact he’ll have if differences with the board are settled, at least in the short term.Second-string or not, India are still world champions, and Suresh Raina will be under pressure to ensure his team delivers a performance worthy of that title and prevent any damage to its pride after a heated build-up to the tour.Form guide (most recent first)West Indies: WWLLL
India: WWWWL
The spotlightR Ashwin has been around the Indian domestic scene for a long time, but rose to prominence during the IPL, capping off another successful season in Chennai Super Kings’ second title win. He’s only played nine ODIs, including two in the World Cup, and hasn’t done too badly. On tracks that have so far favoured spin, his variations, which include the carrom ball, could prove a handful for a West Indies batting line-up. His battles with Gayle in the IPL were memorable, and Ashwin will only be eager to resume that duel.Kieron Pollard, of late, has acquired a reputation to be somewhat of a minnow-basher in ODIs. He’s been a Twenty20 specialist, but an average of 20.37 in the 50-over format is something he’d consider a blot. He faces a familiar set of bowlers this series, and has a chance to address his lack of impact against the more accomplished ODI teams.Team newsIndia played two specialist spinners and two seamers in the Twenty20, but didn’t pick Ishant Sharma, Amit Mishra or Vinay Kumar. Ishant could get a go in place of either Munaf Patel or Praveen Kumar, while Mishra and Ashwin may swap places as the series goes on. The same is likely for wicketkeepers Parthiv Patel and Wriddhiman Saha.India (possible): 1 Parthiv Patel (wk), 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 S Badrinath, 5 Rohit Sharma, 6 Suresh Raina (capt), 7 Yusuf Pathan, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 R Ashwin, 10 Ishant Sharma/Praveen Kumar, 11 Munaf Patel.Dwayne Bravo, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Pollard return to the side, and so does Carlton Baugh, the wicketkeeper, replacing Andre Fletcher.West Indies (possible): 1 Lendl Simmons, 2 Kirk Edwards, 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Ramnaresh Sarwan/ Marlon Samuels, 5 Dwayne Bravo, 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Darren Sammy (capt), 8 Carlton Baugh (wk), 9 Ravi Rampaul, 10 Andre Russell, 11 Devendra Bishoo.Stats and trivia When India and West Indies met for the first time in an ODI after the 1983 World Cup final, they played in Srinagar, Kashmir. The match was cut short due to a dust storm and bad light, and West Indies thrashed the hosts by ten wickets. For a comprehensive stats preview to the series, please click here.Quotes”Each individual will have his game plan and the focus should be to rotate the strike. You will have to sweep, use your feet, play with soft hands, all those things come into play.”

Dwayne Bravo ruled out of World Cup

West Indies’ chances at the World Cup have been dealt a huge blow as their allrounder Dwayne Bravo will miss the rest of their campaign after been ruled out for a minimum of four weeks due to a knee injury he picked up in the match against South Africa on Thursday. The West Indies Cricket Board said an MRI scan on Bravo’s left knee had revealed a sprained ligament and torn knee cartilage, and he would return home for further assessment. The board have not yet named a replacement for Bravo, as they are in the process of applying to the ICC to call someone else in. Bravo would have been certain to miss the entire league phase of the tournament and may not have been fully rehabilitated by the knockout stage either, and West Indies have decided to replace him in their fifteen.Bravo sustained the injury while fielding off his own bowling, during his third over in West Indies’ game against South Africa. Attempting to change direction in his follow through and cut off a drive from Graeme Smith, he swivelled awkwardly and immediately fell to the ground, clutching his knee. He was led off the field, and took no further part in that match.West Indies have now lost three players to injury in a week, with opener Adrian Barath and wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh also forced to fly home before they had even played their first match. Bravo, though, will be the one West Indies miss the most, as he is the vice-captain of the side and an important ingredient in both their batting line-up and bowling attack.”This is a blow for us. Dwayne is our vice-captain and one of the key members of our team,” West Indies coach Ottis Gibson said. “He has been showing good form with the bat and batted well against South Africa on Thursday. He is also a livewire in the field and a reliable bowler. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope he gets back on the field soon.” Bravo had added a quick 40 before being run out on Thursday.West Indies play their next match against the Netherlands, on Monday at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi.

Shahzaib and Riaz added to Pakistan squads

Shahzaib Hasan, the 20-year-old Karachi Dolphins opening batsman, and fast bower Wahab Riaz have been added to Pakistan’s one-day and Twenty20 squads for the series against South Africa which starts October 26. The inclusions come after the pair’s outstanding performance in last week’s domestic Twenty20 competition, and swelled the size of Pakistan’s limited-overs squads to an unusually large 17.There have already been several controversies over the team selection for the South Africa tour. When the squad was initially announced earlier this month, no captain was named, and a day later Misbah-ul-Haq was surprisingly put in charge of the Test side. Then, coach Waqar Younis and limited-overs captain Shahid Afridi complained that the selection panel had not consulted them before picking the side.Chief selector Mohsin Khan said the pair was included on the back of their performances in last week’s Faysal Bank domestic Twenty20 competition. “Both Hasan and Riaz were outstanding in the Twenty20 national event so we recommended their names, which were approved by Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ijaz Butt,” Mohsin said.Riaz, a 25-year-old who plays for Lahore Lions, was already in the Test squad, having impressed during the series against England, with a five-wicket haul on debut at The Oval. He was the best bowler in the domestic T20 event, helping Lahore to the title with his ten wickets at an average of 7.70 and a miserly economy-rate of 4.12. He was in the Twenty20 side against England as well, but hasn’t played ODIs since June 2008.Shahzaib also had a superb Faysal Bank T-20, topping the run charts with 281 in four matches, including a hundred and two half-centuries, at a strike-rate of 169.27 to steer Karachi to the finals. He first came into the spotlight during Pakistan’s successful World Twenty20 campaign in 2009 but has struggled to cement his place.Pakistan are currently having a week-long training camp at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore and are scheduled to leave for the UAE on October 24.
