The Dhruv Jurel run-out: 'I just don't think you can give it out,' says Tom Moody

The Dhruv Jurel run-out – out or not out?

After the contentious lbw call that went in Dinesh Karthik’s favour in the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) innings, there was another dismissal in the IPL 2024 Eliminator that divided opinion, when Cameron Green broke the stumps to run out Dhruv Jurel in the Rajasthan Royals (RR) chase.Green, the bowler, collected Virat Kohli’s throw from the deep, but may or may not have had the ball in his grasp while breaking the stumps. The TV umpire, Anil Chaudhary, however, concluded that Green was in control of the ball and gave Jurel out.Law 29.2.1.5 – dealing with “breaking the wicket fairly” – considers it a valid dismissal provided “that the ball is held in the hand or hands so used, or in the hand of the arm so used” to break the stumps. Since the pictures did not conclusively show Green in control over the ball, there was debate.Related

*Talking about the above law, the MCC laws manager Fraser Stewart said: “The umpire must therefore determine whether the ball is ‘held in the hands’. In this instance, the umpire decided that there was just still pressure on both sides of the ball from both hands, albeit not the parts of the hand that would conventionally be used (palms & fingers). At the moment of impact with the wicket, parts of both hands are still touching the ball, applying just enough pressure to keep it in place. This was sufficient for the umpire to decide that the Law was satisfied and that the ball was being held.”ESPNcricinfo’s expoerts, however, did not entirely agree with that soon after the match finished.”I think there was contact when the wicket was broken, but it was with the wrist. And I don’t believe… we’ve always grown up without knowing the law, the actual wording of the law, we’ve always grown up understanding it’s [about] control. About controlling with the hand,” Mitchell McClenaghan said on ESPNcricinfo’s TimeOut show. “And you saw Cam Green’s reaction afterwards, he was on his knee and his head was down and there was no celebration. Even in his mind – and I could be wrong – I believe he thought he lost control.”Tom Moody also felt the visuals were inconclusive, and Jurel deserved the benefit of the doubt.”The key word is ‘held’,” he said, referring to the law. “And I think when the stump lit up, the ball was not held in the hand. He lost control of the ball. Yes, it was in contact with his wrist/thumb, but there was no control of the ball. It wasn’t being held.”So, for me, that’s a huge grey area. I just don’t think you can give it out. That would’ve caused a storm with that decision, but just looking at the actual wording of the law, it’s very hard to give it out.”Varun Aaron, however, felt that the right decision was made.”I thought it was out. I understand sometimes you don’t hold the ball exactly properly, but if it’s somewhere in the vicinity of your palms, and he’s hit the bails, it’s just a matter of seconds and obviously Cam Green didn’t have the time to play the rule in his head,” he said. “I thought it was out. The umpire gave it out. It is debatable, it is something where people will have different opinions, but I just thought in that moment it was out. He somewhat had control over it, I won’t say he had 100% control over it, but there was control.”The decision did not make a difference to the result. Jurel’s dismissal had RR at 112 for 4 in 13.1 overs, but useful knocks from Riyan Parag, Shimron Hetmyer and Rovman Powell gave RR victory over RCB with one over to spare. RR next face Sunrisers Hyderabad on Friday, May 24 in Chennai at the second qualifier.*1525 GMT, May 23: The story was updated with a quote from Fraser Stewart

Shafique, Raza, Wiese lead Qalandars' rout of United

Qalandars romp home to a 110-run win to move to the top of the table

Danyal Rasool27-Feb-2023This was a match between Lahore Qalandars bowlers and Islamabad United’s batters. But really, it was no match between Qalandars’ bowlers and United’s batters. In the clearest statement of intent, Qalandars wiped the floor with the two-time champions, taking apart their bowling line-up, posting 200. But they’d saved the best for the second innings as they dismembered the most famed batting line-up in PSL history, ripping through them and skittling them out for 90. It is the joint second-heaviest defeat in PSL.After a pulsating victory over Peshawar Zalmi the previous day, Qalandars continued the momentum at home. Until 24 hours prior, it was unclear whether this city would be able to host any more PSL matches this year, but now that it’s confirmed they will, the defending champions appear injected with much more ruthless sense of purpose. Fakhar Zaman and Tahir Baig got them off to a more productive start than yesterday, compiling 56 in the powerplay.United plugged away to try and rein the Qalandars in, in front of another packed house in Lahore. Shadab Khan struck in his first over before Tom Curran removed Fakhar in the next to send both openers back. But Qalandars continued to hammer away with the bat. Sam Billings form gaves the middle order another dimension, and amidst an explosive stand with Abdullah Shafique, the game truly ran away from United. Both batters combined to plunder four boundaries in Shadab’s third over to up the ante, and Shafique followed it up by smashing Zeeshan Zameer for 18 in his second. Billings and Shafique added 71 off 39 balls and it set Qalandars up for an explosive finish.Sikandar Raza, David Wiese and Rashid Khan provided it. Abrar Ahmed went for 21 to herald the start of the death overs before Raza and Rashid bludgeoned 40 in 20 balls in a priceless late partnership to swell Qalandars’ score.David Wiese dented United with three wickets•PCB

For the first four overs, Qalandars were challenged by a characteristically slapdash start from Rahmanullah Gurbaz. Shaheen Shah Afridi began with a 14-run over – ten of those via wides – after which, Zaman Khan was walloped over cow corner for a huge six in the fourth over.Just as the chase appeared to be on track, Zaman dented United which led to a collapse. He dived to his left to dismiss Gurbaz in the last ball of the fourth over. Thereon, United imploded remarkably to lose their ten wickets for 49 with Qalandars overwhelming United with both the quality and quantity of their wicket-taking bowlers.Wiese broke the back of the line-up by taking three middle-order wickets – Colin Munro, Shadab and Azam Khan – to kill the contest. In the interim, Haris Rauf outfoxed Rassie van der Dussen with a lovely slower delivery. And they still had the small matter of Rashid to deal with. The Afghan was typically unplayable; his wily mix of topspinners, flippers and googlies were too much for United. Raza would add the icing on the cake with three wickets, including a run-out, in an over. With Lahore officially confirmed as the hosts for the playoffs and final, their grip on this trophy only appears to be tightening.

Cristiano Ronaldo's title dreams are hanging by a thread already! Saudi Pro League winners and losers as Al-Hilal's Serbian stars settle top-of-the-table clash – but there's more misery for Steven Gerrard

The gap at the summit is now up to seven points following Friday's meeting of the top two that saw the Portugal forward cut a frustrated figure

Was that the match that decided the Saudi Pro League title race? In early December, it's likely too early to say, but Al-Hilal's 3-0 win over Al-Nassr means there is now a seven-point gap at the top of the table as we approach the halfway point of the campaign.

That clash between Riyadh's top-two sides headlined another weekend of exciting Pro League action as the rest of the table begins to take shape in the Middle East.

Away from Friday's top-of-the-table clash, Al-Ittihad continued their recovery under new coach Marcelo Gallardo, as they recovered from an injury suffered by star striker Karim Benzema to beat Al-Khaleej 4-2 on Thursday.

That same night, there was a big win for third-placed Al-Ahli, who ran out 6-0 winners on the road at Abha, while surprise package Al-Taawoun remained in touch of the top-three with a comeback win over Al-Shabab on Saturday.

The news was less good for Steven Gerrard and Al-Ettifaq, however, who went down 1-0 to relegation-threatened Al-Akhdoud to maintain the pressure on their English coach.

GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from the latest round of Saudi Pro League action…

    LOSER: Cristiano Ronaldo's title dreams

If Al-Nassr were to become the first team to beat Al-Hilal in the Pro League this season, they needed their talisman Cristiano Ronaldo to step up and lead the way. However, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner struggled to impose himself on the game as he cut a frustrated figure.

Ronaldo struggled with the physicality of Hilal's Saudi international defender Ali Albulayhi (much like Lionel Messi did in the 2022 World Cup) and spent much of the game complaining to Colombian referee Wilmar Rondan as he looked for a decision that would change the complexion of the contest.

As it was, three second-half goals condemned Nassr to their first loss in 21 games, and leaves them facing an uphill task to win the Pro League title as they look to bridge the seven-point gap which has now opened up at the summit.

  • WINNER: Al-Hilal's Serbian stars

Though it was Neymar who stole the majority of the headlines when it came to Al-Hilal's summer signings, a number of their other new arrivals have stepped up in the absence of the injured Brazilian, and none more so than their Serbian duo, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

The pair shared all three goals in Hilal's win over Al-Nassr on Friday, with Milinkovic-Savic heading in the opener midway through the second half before Mitrovic added some gloss to the scoreline with a late double.

The former Fulham striker has now scored 20 goals in as many games since arriving in Saudi Arabia, including 13 in the Pro League, which puts him just two strikes behind Ronaldo in what has become an intriguing Golden Boot race.

Milinkovic-Savic, meanwhile, insists that he is "not even in my best shape yet", but the way the ex-Lazio star controlled the midfield against Nassr suggested otherwise. With he and Mitrovic in fine form, it's difficult to imagine Hilal throwing away their seven-point advantage at the top of the table.

    LOSER: Karim Benzema

Benzema cannot catch a break this season, it seems. Just as the 2022 Ballon d'Or winner looked primed to finally kickstart his Al-Ittihad career under new manager Gallardo, the striker suffered an injury that, while not serious, is yet another frustrating chapter to add to his Pro League story.

The former France striker limped off after 32 minutes against Al-Khaleej on Thursday and was clearly tearful as he left the pitch just three minutes after doubling his side's lead from the penalty spot in their 4-2 victory.

Fortunately, it seems that he will only be out for around 10 days, though that does put his chances of playing in Ittihad's first-round Club World Cup match against Auckland City on December 12 in jeopardy.

    WINNER: Marcelo Gallardo

He's only been in charge for three matches, but already the Al-Ittihad fans are chanting the name of their new manager Gallardo. The Argentine has overseen two wins and a draw since replacing Nuno Espirito Santo, but the early signs are that the defending champions are starting to find their best levels once more.

Spirits are high, then, as Ittihad look ahead to the Club World Cup, where they are aiming to at least emulate Al-Hilal's achievement of reaching the final in 2022, where the Saudi side succumbed to Real Madrid in a 5-3 thriller.

Rooney, Reyna, Fati & players who made their international debut at 17 as Spain wonderkid Gavi joins illustrious list

Barcelona's teenage midfielder has made history for his country, following in the footsteps of some of the game's greatest players

  • Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney is widely regarded as one of the finest players in English football history, having finished his international career with a record 53 goals to his name from 120 appearances.

His journey began in 2003, when he became the youngest player to ever represent the Three Lions at the age of 17 years and 111 days after coming off the bench in a friendly clash with Australia.

Rooney went on to break the record for England's youngest scorer later that year, firing home in a European Championship qualifier against Macedonia.

    Theo Walcott

Theo Walcott's first taste of senior international football came when he received a surprise call up to Sven-Goran Eriksson's England squad for the 2006 World Cup.

The former Southampton and Arsenal winger made his debut in a pre-tournament friendly against Hungary, breaking Rooney's record as the youngest player to ever feature for the Three Lions at the age of 17 years and 75 days.

Walcott ended up being an unused substitute throughout that World Cup but did go on to win 47 caps for his country, scoring eight goals while also appearing at Euro 2012.

  • Giovanni Reyna

The man who finished third in Goal's 2021 NxGn list has enjoyed a meteoric rise to prominence since joining Borussia Dortmund's academy ranks in 2019.

Reyna had already represented the United States at U15, U16 and U17 level by that stage, and didn't take long to earn a place in the senior setup.

The midfielder was rewarded for his performances for Dortmund with a USMNT call up in November 2020, and took his international bow the day before his 18th birthday in a 0-0 friendly draw against Wales.

Reyna has since recorded four goals in nine games for his country, with his next outing likely to come when Gregg Berhalter's side resume their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign against Jamaica on Friday.

    Paulo Futre

Portugal have boasted many world-class players during their history, from legends such as Eusebio to modern-day greats like Cristiano Ronaldo.

Paulo Futre was among those to make his mark for the southern European nation, as he initially became the youngest player in their history when making his international debut in April 1983.

The ex-Sporting CP and Atletico Madrid winger played 41 times for Portugal across his 12-year international career, scoring six goals, and appeared at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

Valdivia

Malinga flies to India; still recovering from 'bone bruise'

Sri Lanka fast bowler Lasith Malinga, who has been under an injury cloud, has finally flown to India for the World T20. The rest of his team-mates are already in the country, but Malinga had to stay behind to undergo treatment on his left knee. He is still doubtful for Sri Lanka’s opening game, though, against Afghanistan on March 17.Malinga described his injury as a “bone bruise”. Doctors say it occurs as a result of sustaining forceful impacts while playing sports. In the case of a bowler like Malinga, his left knee supports his entire body weight during his delivery stride.”This is a bone injury that cannot be operated or treated medically. I am having only some injections [not pain killers] to make it heal. The only remedy for it is rest,” Malinga said at the airport in Colombo on Sunday. “I will practice in the next few days with the team and see how my knee is taking up the pressure. If I don’t feel any pain I will play in the opening match, but if not it is a decision for the selectors to make.”Malinga has been nursing this injury since last December. He missed the two-match series against New Zealand, came back for the Asia Cup in his designated role as Twenty20 captain, but was sidelined immediately after a match-winning display against UAE. In fact, Malinga has played only five of Sri Lanka’s 13 T20Is since the start of 2015, in a very scattered manner: one match in May, one in July, one in August, two in November and his final game was in February 2016.Malinga’s fitness issues forced a change in leadership and Angelo Mathews was appointed captain of Sri Lanka for the World T20. But the selection panel – both the current one led by Aravinda de Silva and the previous one led by Kapila Wijegunawardene – seemed reluctant to completely rule Malinga out because of the impact he can have. He is the most successful bowler in the World T20 – 38 wickets in 31 matches. Overall he has 299 wickets in T20 cricket.Malinga, who had hinted at retiring after the World T20, said on the flight to Kolkata: “Why do the selectors want to pick a half-fit bowler like me when there are other fit bowlers around?”

Substantial pay hike for Australia's women cricketers

Australia’s female domestic players will receive a significant pay hike after Cricket Australia and state associations invested $600,000 in women’s cricket

Cricket Australia and the state associations have given Australia’s women domestic players a substantial pay hike through a $600,000 investment, ensuring the best state players could get up to $17,000. Additionally, the players who are contracted to CA can earn retainers in excess of $50,000. This investment will increase the Women’s Payment Fund by 36% from last year, up to $2.26 million.Players signed for the Women’s Big Bash League T20 competition will receive retainers between $3000 and $10,000. Also, players contracted to Women’s National Cricket League – a 50-over tournament – will receive the maximum $7000 retainer. The signing of foundation players will be the WBBL clubs’ next target as the window for the inaugural season is now open.James Sutherland, Cricket Australia CEO, said the investment will move Australia women’s cricket in the right direction. “We are still working towards the day when Australia’s female cricketers will be able to earn a full-time, professional living from cricket,” Sutherland said. “But the performances of our female stars justify this step and the day will come when future, full-time professional female cricketers will look back and thank those who went before them.”Australia won the Women’s World Cup in 2013 in India, as well as the Women’s World Twenty20 in 2014 in Bangladesh.

Saha unfazed by Dhoni retirement

Wriddhiman Saha has said MS Dhoni predicted after retiring from Tests that the current crop of players would form the core of the Indian cricket team for the next seven or eight years. Saha, who had long been Dhoni’s understudy, revealed that he received a lot of encouragement from the team Director Ravi Shastri, chief coach Duncan Fletcher, as well as his team-mates to take the gloves when Dhoni decided to call it quits.”MS addressed us in the dressing room after his retirement and told us that ‘this is the core of the Test team that will remain for the next 7-8 years’. We should all try and perform to the best of our abilities and grab the chances that come our way,” Saha told from the sidelines of Bengal training session at the Mohan Meakin ground in Ghaziabad, ahead of their Ranji Trophy match against Uttar Pradesh.”Both Ravi Shastri and Duncan Fletcher were very supportive once MS announced his decision to retire from Tests. They had a lot of encouraging words for me before the Sydney Test as well as the first Test in Adelaide where the skipper was out due to injury. Their mantra was simple – Be positive and enjoy each and every minute.”When asked if there was less pressure on him for a spot in the team now that Dhoni had retired, Saha said, “I have never ever thought like that. You don’t play cricket thinking that there will be comparatively lesser competition that what it was before. The opportunity is there for everybody and whoever performs will play. For me, I used to work hard even when Dhoni was playing Test cricket and it won’t even change now.”Saha may be an introvert, but he possesses a dry sense of humour which often has everyone in splits. He was asked if he found the domestic bowling attack easier to handle after coming back from Australia (he scored 166 against Jammu & Kashmir in his last game), and Saha replied with a straight face.”Actually, it was difficult, I must admit. Because in Australia, the deliveries bowled at 140-145 kmph on average was hitting the bat much earlier. The moment I came back, the speed was 20 kmph less and I was trying to reach towards the ball and still couldn’t hit it.”Saha, however, acknowledged that he did not score enough runs despite getting starts in the first innings of both the Tests he played in Australia. In particular, he received flak for attempting an uncharacteristic heave off Nathan Lyon in the second innings in Adelaide, but Saha defended his plan of action.”I believe having toured Australia with the senior team and playing a Test match did help me in my homework. Ideally, I should have gone and capitalised on the start that I got in both Test matches but it didn’t happen. Hopefully, I will be converting the starts next time around,” he said.”The game-plan was to play positively. Since two players before me in Adelaide (Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane) got out trying to defend, I tried to be positive and counterattack. That could have been a second six had it connected. It was the execution that was wrong but I don’t think that the planning was wrong.”The Indian bowlers had a tough time in Australia, and Saha, on his part, had to keep wickets for nearly 382 overs in the two Tests. He however said he had “absolutely no problems keeping wickets”, especially since he was used to staying behind the wicket for long hours even while playing for Bengal.
