FIVE lessons we learnt from Chelsea this weekend

The sooner Frank Lampard returns the better

Yesterday’s 2-0 defeat highlighted a number of key issues with regards Chelsea’s midfield make up- particularly when Michael Essien and Frank Lampard are not available. In deploying Jon Obi Mikel, Ramires and Yury Zhirkov, in central midfield Carlo Ancelotti relied heavily on one of those three players to play a more creative role a la a Lampard or Michael Ballack. Considering that all three of the players in question remain without a goal in the Premier League, and do not possess the physical presence required to control the midfield in these contests, this lack of threat was not a major surprise.

However, at the very least, Chelsea would have expected the trio to keep the ball far better than they did. Zhirkov, looking increasingly like a left-back being played out of position, was fortunate not to have been sent off in the first half as he brainlessly tripped the returning Dirk Kuyt, before sliding in unnecessarily on FernandoTorres. Mikel won the ball with similar regularity to the manner in which he usually does, however his distribution was sloppy, whilst Brazilian Ramires looked overawed.

Ballack was allowed to leave Stamford Bridge at the end of last season, after it appeared that the German was showing signs of poor motivation and physical decay in Chelsea’s engine room. Even the half-fit, disinterested Ballack that we saw in patches last season would have been an improvement on two of Chelsea’s midfield trio yesterday afternoon. Meanwhile Frank Lampard’s various injuries continue to linger.

Ramires lacks the forward momentum of his fellow countrymen

Ramires is quickly becoming a real concern. He has looked good in a number of games this season, however is quickly resembling a couple of Arsenal midfielders in that he looks great when players back off and allow him time to pick his passes, yet looks weak and naïve when he is placed under physical pressure.

In both this game and the Manchester City fixture he gave the ball away with frightening regularity. In other games he has had Michael Essien to cover for him, however here his errors in possession were punished. The bigger concern, however, was his inability to pick a pass. On several occasions he would be forced into a corner instead of playing an early ball and without Essien’s body strength would end up conceding possession- this was key to Chelsea’s second half momentum stalling after the hour mark.

Carlo might need to strip off to get extra cover

Last season, it was widely acknowledged that Chelsea were maybe a couple of players light with regards creating a title winning squad. When the Blues were freed up to make signings in the January transfer window after their transfer embargo was lifted, Carlo Ancelotti famously promised that he would run around Chelsea’s Cobham training base naked if he reneged on his claim that he would not sign any further players before the season was out.

As we approach another transfer window, Ancelotti must surely be re-thinking his suggestions that he would yet again refrain from getting out the Abramovich chequebook. With only a handful of injuries to their squad, Chelsea already looked very stretched yesterday afternoon.

The worrying aspect of this is that Chelsea do not have a raft of high quality players to come back. Undoubtedly, a fit Michael Essien and Frank Lampard would improve their shape and discipline considerably, however it is the lack of options during the inevitable periods of player absence that must surely concern Ancelotti and Ray Wilkins. If the Blues are to finally triumph in Europe, a creative central midfielder is an absolute must in the January sales.

Josh McEachran not trusted yet

For all the talk of the promise surrounding young midfielder Josh McEachran, it is clear that Ancelotti does not quite trust the boy in big games. This is indicative of where the boy really is in terms of his standing within Chelsea. Very few footballers would look out of place spending a handful of minutes in a team packed with world-class talent, passing the ball around at the end of a game where the result has already been decided.

Whilst making regular appearances for Chelsea is not to be scoffed at, the real stamp of approval for McEachran will come when Ancelotti brings him into a game where the result is not yet settled and backs him to change the match- something that very few players are actually able to do. That Chelsea’s central midfield area was so poor yesterday and that McEachran was not given this chance speaks volumes about how close he really is to figuring in one of these big games.

Petr Cech returning to his best

Over the last few weeks Petr Cech has begun to make the sort of contributions between the sticks that Jose Mourinho used to brag would win his Chelsea side ten points a season.

Last week at Blackburn he made a number of crucial stops to prevent a slip-up, and whilst Chelsea were already 2-0 down before his key contribution came in this game, a genuinely brilliant save with the outside of his right boot prevented further embarrassment for the league leaders. If Cech has suffered from a run of poor games over the last two years, this season his performances have been back to the quality we saw before his accident at the Madejski in 2006.

Harry – lets see the Tottenham XI you could have signed in January

Tottenham Hotspur has always been good at linking themselves with hundreds of players. When I was at school they were linked with Rivaldo and Guardiola and when they signed Edgar Davids I suddenly started believing that every rumour was an actual possibility – if only that had been the case this January. The signings of Yago Falque, Louis Saha and Ryan Nelsen brought hardly set the football world alight, but Harry Redknapp is renowned for making shrewd moves and we will be hoping that he has pulled yet another rabbit out of the hat with these deals.

Here I have compiled a team based entirely on linked players, and it’s quite an eleven which at least shows that they’re chasing good players, unfortunately, it really is chasing.

In a way this list is born out of frustration; a month of rumours has left us with very little in a way of progress but let’s just hope that Messrs Saha and Nelsen will give us enough to get over the line. I have adopted a 3-5-2 formation and to be fair it is a decent team in its own right.

Martin Broughton: Liverpool sale is ‘nearly there’

The sale of Liverpool Football Club to New England Sports Ventures is "nearly there" according to chairman Martin Broughton.

American co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett lost a High Court battle to block the sale of the club to the owners of the Boston Red Sox on Thursday evening.

Hicks and Gillett are scheduled to have another court hearing in Texas at 1300 BST on Friday, but Broughton is optimistic that the drawn out takeover saga is beginning to move to a conclusion.

Judge Christopher Floyd ruled that the US injunction obtained by Hicks and Gillett attempting to block the sale to NESV held no validity in England.

"We're nearly there," said Broughton. "We've still got to take away the restraining order."

A statement issued on behalf of the board following the decision read:"The independent directors of Liverpool Football Club are delighted with the verdict of Mr Justice Floyd in the High Court which now requires Mr Hicks and Mr Gillett to withdraw their Texas restraining order by 1600 BST on Friday.

"We are glad to have taken another important step towards completing the sale process."

Broughton now believes that NESV frontman John W Henry could be in attendance at Sunday's Merseyside derby with Everton.

"Mr Henry is very committed," he added. "My guess is we'll have it done and he'll be there, but we've got to get rid of this order first."

Broughton and NESV are now hoping the deal can be concluded before Friday's deadline with major creditor the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Liverpool could still be placed into administration and would be docked nine Premier League points should they fail to meet the bank's deadline to repay a £200million loan.Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email

The TEN ‘best aspects’ of the January transfer window

As much as people hate to admit it, we all love the January transfer window. It may have started slow this year but with a £10million new signing at Newcastle, Gary Cahill arriving in West London and Thierry Henry’s return to Arsenal; it is really starting to heat up.

There is no way that this month will see the same amount of money spent as this time last year, but the more days that go by , the more clubs that will get involved, with all 20 Premier League clubs wanting to do something before February 1st. The January transfer window is unique, in that players do not have a pre season to get to know their team mates and if they are fit, they will be thrown straight into the side. Deals seem to happen so fast as in a matter of days a player could have played for two separate clubs in the same division.

Come deadline day, every football fan will be engrossed in the internet and the TV to see if their club can do any last minute business. But for now, here is my top ten best aspects of the January transfer window.

Tottenham linked with Blues ace

The Express and Star has reported that Birmingham goalkeeper Ben Foster, who has recently made himself unavailable for international fooball, is wanted by Tottenham Hostspur. The North London outfit are also said to be willing to offer Roman Pavlyuchenko in cash plus player deal but Birmingham are said to be keener on Jermaine Defoe.

Redknapp is believed to have run out of patience with goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes, after recent high profile gaffes against Chelsea and Blackpool. The Spurs manager is has been a long term admirer of the former Manchester United goalkeeper, who has enjoyed an impressive season with the Carling Cup winners, playing in all 36 Premier League games so far, making 157 saves in the process.

The one sticking point for the former Portsmouth manager is Foster’s reluctance leave after finally securing regular first team football after years behind Edwin Van Der Sar at Old Trafford.

Man Utd suffer Giggs injury setback

Manchester United veteran Ryan Giggs is set to be sidelined for around a fortnight after suffering a hamstring injury in the 2-2 draw at Bolton Wanderers.

Giggs was forced from the field early on in the second half at the Reebok Stadium, with manager Sir Alex Ferguson confirming a minor setback after the final whistle.

He told ESPN: "It is a hamstring and I am afraid he will be out for a couple of weeks."

Better news about Wayne Rooney came from number two Mike Phelan, with the England striker's ankle knock nothing to worry about.

Phelan added:"Wayne Rooney had a bit of a knock. He has a little issue with his ankle, we don't know how serious.

"We will have a look in the morning but we think he will be okay for Wednesday.

Wilshere edging closer to Fenerbahce switch, Arsenal fans react

When Jack Wilshere announced that he will be leaving Arsenal this summer when his contract expires, many began to debate where the midfielder would be moving to.

Numerous Premier League clubs have been linked to the 26-year-old’s signature, but it seems that he has chosen a surprising destination.

On Thursday, Turkish-Football reported that Wilshere is poised to hold talks with Fenerbahce regarding a transfer.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”255898″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Arsenal’s opening fixtures for the 201819 Premier League season”]

The England international, who has had a string of injury problems over the years, is available on a free.

If he does opt to move to the Super Lig club, it would be a rather strange decision in terms of his future prospects with the national team.

Who do you think will win the World Cup? Let us know here and win any World Cup shirt of your choice.

The midfielder failed to make it into Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad, despite spending the majority of last season at Arsenal injury-free.

Playing in Turkey may not increase his chances of making it back into the England fold, but he could achieve regular minutes on the pitch.

Mauricio Pellegrino must learn from two up top working in the draw against Burnley

Southampton moved out of the Premier League relegation zone when substitute Manolo Gabbiadini scored a late equaliser in his side’s 1-1 draw against Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday, and it came when they had two strikers on the pitch.

While the 4-2-3-1 formation helped Saints achieve some of their best ever top flight campaigns and qualify for the Europa League twice in recent years, they haven’t looked the like the same team that played so successfully using that system when they had Rickie Lambert and then Graziano Pelle as a focal point.

Of course, the south coast outfit also had the likes of Adam Lallana, Jay Rodriguez and Sadio Mane supporting the centre-forward, but it’s fair to say that Southampton have been a completely different outfit since Pelle left for China in 2016 and Claude Puel took the reins from Ronald Koeman.

They certainly haven’t been the same from an attacking point of view and they have largely struggled to score goals in the 18 months since then, while the striker – whoever it may be – is often left too isolated with the attacking midfielders not close enough to them.

Whether that is down to those individuals or the tactics of the manager – this is a theme that has continued since Mauricio Pellegrino succeeded Puel last summer – isn’t entirely clear, but both bosses should take some of the blame for perhaps being too negative and not committing enough men forward.

Saints have already lost at home to Watford, Crystal Palace, Leicester City and Burnley and only drawn with Newcastle United, Huddersfield Town, Swansea City and Brighton and Hove Albion at St Mary’s this term, and in all of those fixtures they haven’t had the firepower required to break the opposition down considering they haven’t been as good defensively as in previous years.

Southampton supporters have often called out for Pellegrino to play two strikers up top to give them more of a threat, and that was even more apparent following the 1-0 home defeat against the Clarets on the south coast in November.

With the game goalless after 65 minutes, the crucial moment of the match happened as Manolo Gabbiadini was replaced by Charlie Austin for the hosts, while Sean Dyche saw an opportunity and decided to be bold by bringing on two strikers and taking one striker and a midfielder off.

[ad_pod ]

Burnley went two up top and they got their reward as Sam Vokes scored the winner nine minutes from time, to leave the St Mary’s crowd disappointed – a recurring theme this term.

It was clear from that incidence that putting two up top can be effective, but despite the fans wanting it and Pellegrino often being questioned about it at his various press conferences, he has never taken the plunge even though he will have Gabbiadini, Austin, Shane Long and new boy Guido Carrillo to pick from when everyone is fit.

Southampton had put in yet another poor performance on the road against Burnley at the weekend, and when they fell behind to Ashley Barnes’ 67th-minue goal Pellegrino decided to act by bringing on Sofiane Boufal for Oriol Romeu, Josh Sims for James Ward-Prowse and Manolo Gabbiadini for Dusan Tadic over the course of the following 15 minutes.

That left the visitors with Gabbiadini and Carrillo as the two strikers, as the Argentine boss finally took a risk to try and salvage a point.

It was something that the Saints fans have barely seen during Pellegrino’s time at the helm, and they would have been delighted when the decision paid off as Sims crossed to Carrillo, who nodded it down for Gabbiadini to fire home his first Premier League goal since October.

For many supporters it would have been no surprise that the tactical change worked and it is something that they have been calling out for a while, but now their boss needs to learn from it too.

Southampton face a huge match against 19th-placed Stoke City at St Mary’s on Saturday, and in all honesty it is a must-win encounter if they are to secure their top flight status for another season given some of the tricky fixtures – mostly away – that they still have to come.

Pellegrino’s men need to have an attacking threat and take the game to the Potters, and Carrillo and Gabbiadini should be starting as a front two after their fine link-up for the goal at Turf Moor.

It’s not as though the Argentine boss doesn’t have the options to play 3-5-2 or 4-4-2 either because he does, and playing both up top on Saturday could be the difference between one point or three points, which could ultimately decide the south coast outfit’s fate this season.

TEN World Cup stars that could be dazzling the Premier League next season

The Premier League is represented by 110 players in the World Cup – more than any other league in the world. And whilst we, in England, have a selection of the world’s greatest names in the sport, we look set to welcome a whole host of new stars to our shores come the start of the 2014-15 campaign.

During World Cup season, transfer speculation is rife, with everyone getting the chance to assess their team’s next top transfer target almost every day.

With unprecedented levels of excitement – attacking football, end-to-end games, goals galore – it’s hard to argue against the 2014 World Cup being the best on record.

Despite many big moves already having been made in the transfer window this summer, many more look set to occur, including a host of the World Cup’s top performers.

Here is a list of the top Premier League-bound performers this summer.

Guillermo Ochoa

Football – Croatia v Mexico – FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014 – Group A – Arena Pernambuco, Recife, Brazil – 23/6/14Mexico’s Guillermo Ochoa warms up before the matchMandatory Credit: Action Images / Paul ChildsLivepicEDITORIAL USE ONLY.

Mexico’s sturdy defence was greatly assisted by the heroics of Guillermo Ochoa. The Mexican stopper put in a man-of-the-match performance against Brazil, shutting out the hosts in a hard-fought 0-0 draw. Ochoa is currently a free agent after being released by Ajaccio following their relegation to Ligue 2. Liverpool and Arsenal are both reported to be seriously considering a move for him.

Ivan Perisic

Croatia were unable to progress beyond a tricky group, but this didn’t stop Perisic from doing what he could. The Wolfsburg winger was by far and away his country’s best performer in their three games, netting twice and getting one assist. He provided a constant threat from the left wing, impressing in the final third. Roberto Martinez has been strongly credited with an interest in Perisic as he looks to bolster Everton’s squad ahead of European football this season.

Alexis Sanchez

Football – Spain v Chile – FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014 – Group B – Estadio do Maracana, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – 18/6/14Alexis Sanchez – ChileMandatory Credit: Action Images / Paul ChildsEDITORIAL USE ONLY.

Chile were one of the surprise packages this summer, and found themselves very unfortunate to be eliminated on penalties against Brazil in their last 16 tie. Amongst their star players, Barcelona’s Alexis Sanchez was the brightest as he scored twice, and beat players at will. The Spanish club are looking to cash in on the Chilean, with Manchester United, Arsenal, and Liverpool all being keen admirers.

Memphis Depay

Three substitute appearances have resulted in two goals so far this World Cup for PSV’s Memphis Depay. The lightning-fast winger has demonstrated his eye for goal in his three cameo roles, with game-changing performances each time. Manchester United are in serious need of fresh ideas, with their wide midfielders not providing enough creativity and goal threat last season. Depay has links with van Gaal, and could be on his way to Old Trafford.

Joel Campbell

Technically, Campbell is already a Premier League player, having been on the books of Arsenal since 2011. However, work permit issues have prevented him from making his club debut. Now, however, Campbell looks ready to step up to the plate for the Gunners. He is Costa Rica’s most potent threat up top, and put in a match-winning display as they upset the odds, beating Uruguay 3-1 in their opening match before topping the ‘Group of Death’. He will be given a chance to impress with the Gunners in pre-season, and could finally make his mark in England this year.

Enner Valencia

The tragic passing of Ecuador’s captain and star striker, Christian Benitez, last year struck the nation deeply. Enner Valencia was tasked with shouldering much of the vacated attacking burden, and he performed admirably as Ecuador fell at the group stage. Three goals in as many games, and some powerful displays to go along with his goal return, have alerted the likes of Newcastle and West Ham. Currently based in Mexico, Valencia will no doubt be intrigued by Premier League interest.

Jefferson Montero

Another Ecuadorian who took the chance to shine in Brazil was Jefferson Montero – also based in Mexico. The left winger’s speed and fast feet in possession caused problems as Ecuador briefly threatened to qualify through to the last 16. He has recently announced he will come to Europe this summer, with both West Ham and Arsenal having been attributed with an interest in bringing the £4 million-rated winger to the Premier League.

Xherdan Shaqiri

It took until Switzerland’s final group game for Shaqiri to come to the fore, but when he finally arrived, it was worth the wait. A classy hat-trick against Honduras, including a wondrous 25-yard strike, helped secure his country’s progression into the first knockout round. The diminutive winger is Switzerland’s primary creative threat, but he doesn’t have the same importance at club level. Liverpool are hot on his case, and look certain to finalise a deal for him this summer.

Emmanuel Emenike

Nigeria managed to progress from Group F with favourites, Argentina, and the industry of Emmanuel Emenike up top has been no small contributory factor. He tormented Bosnian defender, Emir Spahic, all evening as the Super Eagles triumphed 1-0, virtually securing qualification. The combination of physical might and powerful running is a nightmarish prospect for any defence. Chelsea have been strongly linked with the Fenerbahce man as Jose Mourinho tries to strengthen a weak front line at Stamford Bridge.

Divock Origi

In a team full of Premier League stars, Belgium’s biggest threat this summer has been 19-year-old striker, Divock Origi. The Lille man was an unknown quantity for most in England until the past few weeks, but three substitute appearances have alerted the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham to his talents. He has the pace to run in behind defenders, and likes to pick the ball up and beat his marker. A winner to secure qualification against Russia capped off what has been a great World Cup so far for Origi. He looks destined for a Premier League switch in due course.
