Bresnan and Finn aim to build on winter success

Forming a successful Test team can take years of work, but sometimes a couple of crucial building blocks slot in almost out of nowhere. Six months ago neither Tim Bresnan or Steven Finn were at the head of the pack for pace-bowling slots, yet both will now line-up against Bangladesh at Lord’s with the aim of pushing their claims for a more permanent place. As is often the case, ill-luck to others presented their opportunities. Ryan Sidebottom and Graham Onions both went lame before the first Test in Bangladesh during March – and the latter is now ruled out for at least another three months – leaving the England selectors searching for replacements. Bresnan’s consistent one-day form meant his was a logical progression, while Finn was summoned to the squad having impressed for the Lions in UAE.Both slotted straight into the line-up in the searing heat of Chittagong and Dhaka on pitches devoid of any life. But it was the tough conditions which allowed the pair to enhance their reputations. Bresnan showed the knack of breaking partnerships with reverse swing and suggested he could handle the No. 7 spot, while Finn, even on deathly slow pitches, found troublesome bounce with useful pace. However, while both emerged during the same series that’s where the similarities end. With Bresnan you have the stocky, northern allrounder who has had to fight hard to get himself in shape, then there is the beanpole, 6’7” frame of Finn who has battled to add the bulk needed to be a fast bowler.”I did myself a lot of favours in Bangladesh with the way I bowled, but especially the way I batted,” Bresnan said. “I grabbed the chance with both hands which is what you need to do to force you way into a team.”But I realised I needed a good start in county cricket so decided to play as much as I could for Yorkshire and I realised I’d be difficult to leave out if I had a successful start to the season.”Bresnan has just returned from playing a key role in England’s World Twenty20 triumph where his all-round reputation was further boosted, but Finn has spent the last six weeks in the more humble surrounds of Division Two Championship action for Middlesex. He started the season with an almighty bang by claiming 14 wickets in the match against Worcestershire and has 29 scalps at 18.68 for the season. There is already a feeling that the England management see him as an Ashes weapon with his height a potentially crucial factor on hard Australian pitches, but the 21-year-old is trying to keep himself firmly focussed on the week ahead.”Even six months ago I wasn’t expecting an international debut in 2010,” Finn said. “I’m just taking each game as it comes and that’s all I can do and it will stand me in good stead.”Bangladesh was a great experience, playing on wickets like that which I have never played on before. You don’t experience decks that flat here, and it’s nice to bowl a green seamer in April after slugging it out on those wickets. I’ve started the season well and taken a few wickets but each game is a new day.”Steven Finn’s early-season form has built on the positive impressive he made in Bangladesh and he is now tipped for an Ashes berth•Getty Images

If England’s plans continue to take shape as expected, two of England’s pace attack in Australia will be James Anderson and the currently resting Stuart Broad. Then it depends on whether it’s a five-man or four-man attack as to how many berths are vacant. Onions is losing ground with his untimely injury so both Bresnan and Finn could jump ahead during the summer, although there is no such thing as too many quick bowlers to chose from.”The way it’s happened over the last couple of years means we have a crop of seamers that can do a job in Test cricket,” Bresnan said. “Anyone who has played has been quite successful and long may that continue because one seamer isn’t going to play every game, it isn’t humanly possible.”This is how it’s got to be know because we play so much cricket. Test cricket is very intense, a lot more so than county cricket, and you can’t get away with 75% and be successful. As long as you have quality guys playing all the time, which we have, we should be able to maintain the standards.”The balance of the England side is a key question which needs answering this season and Bresnan will be central to the debate of four bowlers or five. Andy Flower is a huge supporter and Bresnan’s 91 in Dhaka hinted that No. 7 isn’t out of his reach at Test level.”In the last six to eight months I’ve gone the other way and spent a lot more time working on my batting,” he said. “My bowling is at a stage where it just needs fine-tuning, I feel I have the skill and accuracy. It’s not that I don’t work on it, but it takes a backburner at practice because we bowl so much anyway.”I’ve always know I could score runs at Test level it’s just about the application. I can play in Test cricket, no problem, as an allrounder,” he said. “It’s nice for the captain and coach when there is someone down the order who can get big runs.”Finn’s role is more one-dimensional but his development could be even more vital to England’s chances. They are craving a tall, quick bowler to replace Steve Harmison and Andrew Flintoff with Finn being the closest available on the domestic scene. Finn will hope that Andrew Strauss gives him the Pavilion End at Lord’s when his turn comes with the ball, which is the end from which his role model was at his best.”I have my idols like Glenn McGrath, in my opinion the best bowler to play the game, and it’s nice to play in the environment he was in a few years ago and see what I can do,” he said. “I’m still learning about my game. I’ve spoken a lot to Gus [Angus Fraser, the Middlesex director of cricket] about this and I don’t want to be like anyone else. I want to bowl how I can with my style but it’s hard to put my finger on what that is.”But will a strike or stock role be Finn’s route? “It would be great to combine the two. It would be nice to have a lot of pace and be able to control it – that’s the ideal fast bowler – and everyone who plays cricket should try and make themselves as good as they can. At the moment I’m somewhere between the two but no way am I the finished article.”There is still a chance that neither Finn or Bresnan will feature in Brisbane come November 25, but the fact both are now in the mix shows how far they have developed in a short space of time.

ExWHUemployee drops Traore update

West Ham United are not interested in a deal to bring Adama Traore to the London Stadium in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by ExWHUemployee, with the club insider revealing in a post on The West Ham Way that he does not believe David Moyes will be making a move for the Wolverhampton Wanderers winger this month, despite recent reports to the contrary.

In his post, Ex said: “I don’t believe there is any serious interest in Traore at this point for that price. In the past, the club have held an interest in the player, but I don’t believe he is a name that Moyes has mentioned recently and he is also out of favour at Wolves after an unproductive season, so I doubt the club would wish to risk £20m and high wages on an out of form player. Should a loan deal be available this may change things but, at this point, I do not believe he is a target.”

Fans will be buzzing

While it is abundantly clear that, should Moyes wish to give his side the best possible chance of securing a top-four finish this season, West Ham simply must bring in attacking reinforcements during the January transfer window, whether or not the signing of Traore would have been a good move by the Hammers is very much up for debate.

Indeed, while the £25.2m-rated man has returned some impressive metrics over his 18 Premier League appearances so far this season, taking an average of 1.2 shots, making 1.1 key passes, completing a league-high 4.5 dribbles and winning a whopping 7.1 duels per game, the fact remains that the Spain international has failed to score a single goal or register an assist in the current campaign.

This would appear to be the primary reason as to why many of the London Stadium faithful took to Twitter to state their bewilderment at their club’s link with a move for the 25-year-old – with a great deal suggesting that, while a backup to Michail Antonio is very much needed, the £20m signing of a player who is yet to contribute to a single goal this season is simply not the answer.

As such, it is clear to see that ExWHUemployee’s latest update will have left many of the Hammers fanbase buzzing, and we have to say, we can understand why.

Tottenham ready to swoop for Insigne

As per Italian newspaper La Repubblica, relayed by Sport Witness and Calcio Napoli 24, an update has come to light on Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer plans for Lorenzo Insigne.

The Lowdown: Spurs eyeing Insigne…

Recent claims have suggested that Spurs and manager Antonio Conte are very much in the frame to sign Insigne as his contract winds down at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Napoli star can leave for free at the end of this season as things stand with his current deal set to expire in 2022 and there is still no sign of an extension.

This has apparently alerted Tottenham with journalist Fabio Santini saying earlier this week that the Lilywhites have entered pole position and Conte is personally ‘crazy about’ about signing him (7 Gold via Area Napoli).

The Latest: Insigne update emerges…

According to La Repubblica, via SW and CalcioNapoli, Tottenham are ‘ready to come forward with a low cost offer’ for the Italy international next month.

They claim this will even be ‘at the beginning of January’ as Spurs transfer chief Fabio Paratici eyes an early window swoop for one of Conte’s top targets.

The Verdict: No brainer?

While the 30-year-old doesn’t come with much sell-on value given his age, signing Insigne would be an absolute no brainer for free.

The 53-cap star, shining under Roberto Mancini at Euro 2020, has maintained that fine form at club level with four goals and five assists already this Serie A campaign.

Insigne has also averaged a much higher rate of shots on goal per 90 (3.5) over 2021/2022 so far than any Tottenham player – highlighting his obvious threat going forward (WhoScored).

Having always been prolific for a natural winger, amassing 114 goals over his senior Napoli career, he can also play as a second striker when called upon – gifting Conte another option further forward (Transfermarkt).

Lauded as ‘relentless’ by pundit Tony Cascarino during his summer exploits with Italy, Spurs could be targeting a perfect attacker.

Newcastle United trio disappointed vs Burnley

Newcastle United finally got their first win of the Premier League season with a 1-0 victory at home to Burnley on Saturday afternoon.

Callum Wilson pounced on some spillage from goalkeeper Nick Pope to calmly slot the ball into the back of the net and give his team all three points at St. James’ Park.

There were some spirited performances from Eddie Howe’s side on the day, but some may have been disappointed with their own individual displays.

As such, The Transfer Tavern have used statistical experts SofaScore to analyse who the three worst players (to have played at least 45 minutes) for the Magpies were:

Fabian Schar

Schar may count himself unlucky to have been ranked third given that he got the assist for Wilson’s goal, but nonetheless SofaScore decided to give him a 6.6 overall rating.

The central defender lost out on 11 of his duels in total, the third-most out of any of his teammates, as he also failed to record a single interception or tackle in the game.

Schar was also guilty of giving the ball away on no fewer than on 20 separate occasions in the match, the most out of any Toon player.

Joe Willock

Willock was also given a 6.6 rating by SofaScore, but ranks in second here courtesy of Schar’s assist.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-2/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The former Arsenal man lost five duels, and also never managed a shot on target, interception or tackle, while he lost possession a total of 11 times.

Allan Saint-Maximin

So often the bright spark in the North East, Saint-Maximin was lively as usual, but nothing really came off for him. As such, SofaScore decided to give him just a 6.1 rating.

The winger lost out on nine duels, and failed with three of his shots on goal, while he also failed to put in an accurate cross or long ball.

Saint-Maximin also gave the ball away on 18 different occasions, the joint-third most out of any of his teammates.

McGrath keeps faith in injured Lee

Glenn McGrath insists Brett Lee’s bowling is still world class and he should be picked in Australia’s Test team as soon as he is fit. While Lee has not played a Test since hobbling out of the Boxing Day match last year and is currently recovering from an elbow bone spur, he is also behind the young bowlers Mitchell Johnson, Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus in the pecking order. However, McGrath, who was launching Jane McGrath Day for January’s Sydney Test, said Lee remained a threat to international batsmen. “I think Brett’s still got a lot to offer, a lot of experience and what he brings to the team, that fear factor, there’s still that aura there he’s created,” McGrath said at the SCG.”In saying that, the guys that have done the job, the way Mitchell Johnson’s bowled, Pete Siddle has impressed me and Hilfy and Dougy Bollinger coming on the scene, you can’t fault any of them. It’s good, healthy competition [but] I would have ‘Binga’ in any team I played in if he’s back fit again.”Lee, 33, has taken 310 wickets in 76 Tests but there is a feeling the selectors doubt his ability to get through back-to-back five-day games. After recovering from ankle surgery, Lee did not play a Test during the Ashes series due to a side strain even though he felt he was ready for the final two games. The latest elbow setback, which resulted in an early departure from the India one-day series, came following some encouraging performances in the limited-overs sides.New South Wales face Tasmania in a Sheffield Shield match next week and Lee will have to play in that game to be a serious contender for the opening contest against West Indies from November 26. “In a Test the workload is going to be pretty heavy and I don’t think Brett would want to go into a Test where he was concerned [about his body],” McGrath, who took 563 wickets in 124 Tests, said. “If he broke down in that first match back it could damage his career a lot more than just sitting that one out and coming back when he was 100% right.”I heard he had a bowl at the nets yesterday and was pretty happy about how it went. If he can get through a four-day match then he can get through a Test match.”

Fresh Aston Villa claim emerges on Julian Alvarez

The agent of reported Aston Villa January transfer target, Julian Alvarez, has recently visited England.

What’s been said?

In a recent interview with Argentinian media outlet Ole, the River Plate vice-president, Jorge Brito, revealed that the 21-year-old’s representatives recently travelled to England amid the striker’s links with a move to Aston Villa.

Indeed, a recent report by the same publication revealed that Villa have been monitoring the situation of the Argentina international ahead of the January transfer window, while the likes of AC Milan, Napoli, Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham Hotspur are also believed to hold an interest in the striker – who is thought to have a £21.5m release clause in his River Plate contract.

Speaking about the interest surrounding Alvarez, Brito said: “The objective, now his representatives have returned from England, is to talk to reach a good agreement and that Julian stays.”

Gerrard’s next Morelos

It is easy to see why Villa, as well as a number of Europe’s other leading clubs, are keeping a very close eye on Alvarez, as the centre-forward has been in remarkable form for River Plate so far this season.

Indeed, over his 16 Liga Profesional appearances in the current campaign, the £18m-rated man has scored a whopping 15 goals, registered five assists and created eight big chances for his teammates – averaging a rather incredible 1.25 direct goal contributions per game.

These returns have seen the player who Golazo Argentino dubbed a “phenomenon” average an extraordinary SofaScore match rating of 7.84, ranking him by far and away as the best performer in the top flight of Argentine football.

Furthermore, Steven Gerrard has already proven he can get the best out of a South American centre-forward in the UK, with Colombia international Alfredo Morelos scoring 83 goals and registering 37 assists over his 158 appearances – an average of 0.76 direct goal contributions per game – under the 41-year-old at Rangers.

As such, it would appear highly advisable for Christian Purslow to do all he can to secure the signing of Alvarez this January, as the 21-year-old very much appears to possess the potential to become Gerrard’s next Morelos at Villa Park.

Cross says six Leeds players are off form

As many as six Leeds United first-team players are struggling badly for form in the early few months of this season, according to journalist Beren Cross.

The Lowdown: Leeds make poor start

After a superb first year back in the Premier League, Leeds have experienced a sobering start to the 2021/22 campaign.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side have still only won one of their nine league games so far, drawing and losing four times apiece in the other matches.

It leaves Leeds languishing just above the relegation zone in 17th place ahead of Sunday’s crucial trip to bottom-placed Norwich City.

[freshpress-quiz id=“375277″]

The Latest: Cross singles out six players

Speaking in a Q&A for Leeds Live, Cross claimed that Stuart Dallas, Luke Ayling, Patrick Bamford, Rodrigo, Jack Harrison and Mateusz Klich all need to get their act together and find some form:

“Dallas is one of a few who have not been at the same levels as last season. [Luke] Ayling, Bamford (before injury), Rodrigo, [Jack] Harrison and [Mateusz] Klich all seem to have slumped at the same time, which has not helped matters.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-22/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Time to go up a gear

At the moment, Leeds appear to be suffering the footballing equivalent of a difficult second album, but they need to get over this slump as soon as possible.

The quality is clearly there for that to happen after last season’s ninth-place finish – injuries aren’t helping at the moment, in fairness – and they just need a few wins for things to click again and key figures to show their full worth.

Those aforementioned individuals are ranked 7th, 13th, 10th, 6th, 17th and 8th in the squad based on Whoscored’s match ratings,

If Leeds are to pull away from what is starting to look like a real relegation scrap, the likes of Dallas and Bamford in particular will need to be much higher up that list, considering their effectiveness in last season’s resounding success.

In other news, Phil Hay has made a claim regarding three Leeds players. Read more here.
