Jayawardene, Vithanage help SL surge to 498 lead

Individual milestones dominated the most one-sided of the three days so far as Sri Lanka eventually declared after piling on a whopping 730 for 6

The Report by Kanishkaa Balachandran29-Jan-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsMahela Jayawardene surpassed Allan Border’s tally of 11,174 Test runs•Associated PressIndividual milestones dominated the most one-sided of the three days so far as Sri Lanka eventually declared after piling on a whopping 730 for 6, after Mahela Jayawardene reached his seventh double-century and Kithuruwan Vithanage scored his maiden century in only his third Test. By tea, Sri Lanka were already ahead by a healthy 370, but the captain Angelo Mathews held back the declaration till Jayawardene reached his milestone, giving Sri Lanka a seemingly unassailable lead of 498. Sri Lanka picked up a late wicket to cap another dominant day.Bangladesh had been on the field since the final session on the first day and the physical and mental fatigue was apparent with the way they carried themselves on the third day, as if waiting to be told when to head indoors and pad up. Their specialist seamers weren’t effective enough and their spinners too were at the mercy of Sri Lanka’s in-form batting line-up. There was little the part-timers could do. It’s normal for captains to give their bowlers at least an hour before stumps to nip out a few wickets, but Mathews adopted a more conservative approach and instead was happy to give the hosts nine overs. In that period, Bangladesh lost Tamim to a reckless shot.Mathews had a chance to add to the centuries tally, before falling for 86. Jayawardene continued to milk the bowling in placid conditions and he brought out his signature late cut and paddle sweep against the spinners. Having begun his innings overnight, he brought up his fifty with an effortless cover drive off Al-Amin Hossain. He moved to the 90s with an impeccable reverse sweep off Sohag Gazi that went for a boundary. He sped towards his century with a late cut off the part-time legspinner Marshall Ayub and followed it up with another boundary in the same region, off Robiul Islam. The seamer dished out a long hop down the leg side which Jayawardene pulled to fine leg to bring up his century. He barely gave the bowlers a chance, until he survived a close shout for lbw off Gazi on 119. Jayawardene attempted another reverse sweep and was struck adjacent to the stumps with the ball pitching in line with the stumps despite the round the wicket angle. Gazi was exasperated when it was turned down but it summed up Bangladesh’s day.Mathews too survived, when on 68 he edged Ayub and was dropped by the wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim. Mathews capitalised on Robiul’s poor length, pulling a short one down the leg side and driving the next one down the ground for consecutive boundaries. He had a century for the taking but chipped Gazi towards midwicket where Ayub took a sharp catch.Vithanage made merry given the carefree situation and along with Jayawardene, helped take the score past 600. Vithanage made a fifty on debut, against the same team last year in a similar pressure-free scenario. His inclusion in this Test was due to Prasanna Jayawardene’s departure due to his father’s death. And Vithanage made good use of this unexpected opportunity. The left-hander was busy at the crease, rocking back to cut the spinners through the off side when they dropped it short. He came down the track to the spinners and tonked two sixes down the ground. The new ball didn’t give Bangladesh any respite as a couple of short balls were dispatched for fours behind square leg by Vithanage, who brought up his fifty with one of those. Luck was on his side as two outside edges by Vithanage found the third man boundary, one of which bisected the keeper and first slip, both of whom were unmoved.Vithanage brought up his ton with a square cut for four off Nasir and at that stage, Jayawardene was still 17 short of a double-century. Jayawardene batted with greater urgency after tea, shuffling across his stumps to sweep the spinners and he raced to his double-ton in style, with two sixes over deep midwicket off Nasir. Jayawardene, in the process, overtook the Australian Allan Border’s tally of 11,174 runs and is now the sixth-highest run-getter in Tests.Neither pace nor spin worked for Bangladesh, and their frustration in not being able to pick up wickets was summed up in one small passage of play in the morning when Robiul Islam exchanged words with Jayawardene, making the umpires and Rahim intervene to appease the situation. They now face the task of batting out two days. Tamim’s dismissal, caught off a leading edge to point, was perhaps the last thing they needed. The best they can do is take a leaf out of Sri Lanka’s book and use the conditions to play themselves in and grind out the opposition.

Zimbabwe Tests ideal preparation for SA – Younis

Younis Khan rated the quality of Zimbabwe’s bowlers so highly that he regards the two-Test series in Harare as ideal preparation for Pakistan’s next challenge against the No.1 ranked Test team. Pakistan take on South Africa in the UAE after the Zimbabwe leg wraps up and Younis hopes the experience gained here can be put to good use on that assignment.”The Zimbabweans bowled so well, they made it difficult for us, it’s definitely good practice for us when we get back to Dubai,” Younis said. “Also, the wicket is very good so we can really get some time but they are making it tough for us to score runs.”Although Zimbabwe’s attack did not profit as much as they did on the first day, when there was still something in the surface, as they tied Pakistan down to a scoring rate of 2.4. Hamilton Masakadza, the Zimbabwe captain, was pleased with the effort on a pitch that was at its best for batting. “The guys bowled really well, they applied themselves, they stuck at it and that was good to see,” he said.Having had Pakistan at 23 for 3, Zimbabwe may have hoped to limit them even further but Masakadza said Younis, in particular, made that tough. “He put us under pressure because he was not just looking to be there, he was also looking for run-scoring opportunities,” Masakadza said. “We had to set more defensive fields as well.”Younis and Misbah-ul-Haq shared a fourth-wicket stand of 116 to get Pakistan out of trouble but the old hands’ rescue act was not simply a cause for celebration. Their ongoing efforts to steady Pakistan points to an over-reliance on seniors and raises concerns about the next generation. Younis is hopeful they will improve with time.”Test cricket is all about patience and the young guys, sometimes they come from ODIs and Twenty20s so they need to learn,” Younis said. “It’s for the senior players like myself and Misbah and [Mohammad] Hafeez to help them and we are here to do that. The other thing is that we are not playing Test cricket regularly, the last time was almost six months ago. You need to play regularly to learn.”Pakistan’s call for more Test cricket has been made on numerous occasions, especially by Misbah in South Africa in March. Younis has not played international cricket since then and most of the squad has been occupied with one-day competitions. That’s why, according to Younis, the trip to Zimbabwe is so important for them. “This is what we need and we are enjoying playing here,” he said.As much as the experience of it is worthwhile for Pakistan, getting the expected results is also important and Younis is confident they can beat Zimbabwe in the longest format as well as they did in the shorter ones. Asked what he thought was a defendable total, he said, “Anything,” before qualifying that to, “something like 200 or 300. Anything.”Younis believes the pitch will take more turn, “especially towards the end,” but Masakadza remains hopeful it will not be much more. He said the cracks have only opened a touch, with “nothing too frightening at this stage,” and thinks Zimbabwe could chase something “around 250.”Still, he is wary of Saeed Ajmal, after the spinner took seven wickets in the first innings. “We know he is going to be their main threat and the guys have their plans,” Masakadza said. “Some will be looking to use the sweep and others to play as straight as possible. But I’m feeling pretty confident.”

Sangakkara's stunning hundred keeps Sri Lanka alive

Only India, once, had ever successfully chased such a daunting target in an ODI at The Oval, but Sri Lanka made a confident start

The Report by David Hopps13-Jun-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsKumar Sangakkara played one of his finest one-day innings to keep Sri Lanka in the tournament•Getty Images

Kumar Sangakkara has never been part of a Sri Lanka team winning a major ICC one-day trophy outright. Neither have the other outstanding players of this Sri Lanka era – Mahela Jayawardene, Lasith Malinga or Tillakaratne Dilshan. But they will believe there is still time after Sangakkara’s magnificent unbeaten 134 from 135 balls pulled off an improbable run chase against England by seven wickets with 17 balls to spare at The Oval.Only India had ever pulled off such a daunting target on this ground and, if Sri Lanka had failed to hit such heights, they would have been eliminated. But, as the clouds cleared, the pitch was encouraging and Sangakkara, driven by the vision that his redoubtable career need not go unrewarded, summoned a shrewd and inspired response.England now face New Zealand in Cardiff in their final match on Sunday and Sri Lanka are pitted against Australia at The Oval the following day with Group A in the balance.ODI batting England style, a methodical, statistically-justified policy that involves stripping as much risk out of the game as possible, setting up an appropriate base and then staking much on havoc at the end had been found wanting, and as Sangakkara drove Sri Lanka towards victory, its chief architect, Jonathan Trott, who had made 76 from 87 balls in inimitable style, watched in forlorn mood from the dressing room, ice pack pressed to a strained thigh.Sangakkara marshalled Sri Lanka’s response superbly despite the initially distracting, and ultimately inspired, presence of the promoted tail-ender, Nuwan Kulasekara, who was sent in to No. 5 to have a swing in the Powerplay and who for a prolonged period was about as useful to Sangakkara as a loose horse in the Grand National. His promotion looked ill-judged as he struggled against James Anderson, but when he launched Graeme Swann’s offspin for two successive leg-side sixes, and continued to thrash his way to an unbeaten 58 from 38 balls it abruptly became a masterstroke and long before the end had left England looking demoralised.Kulasekara also knew his place. Shortly after Sangakkara reached his 15th ODI hundred, and his first against England, he stumbled in mid-pitch and, recognising the danger of a run out, Kulasekara ran alongside him to ensure that he would be run out if anybody would be. In his instantaneous recognition that he must protect his partner at all costs, it spoke volumes for his good sense. When Sangakkara responded by hoisting Anderson’s slower ball for six, it communicated that he was worth preserving. Anderson was impressive, and England’s ground fielding, led by the sub Jonny Bairstow, was exceptional at times, but three overs from Joe Root, England’s insurance bowler, cost 27, and Stuart Broad had an expensive night. Jayawardene and Dilshan also played their part for Sri Lanka with a couple of 40s and Malinga was Sri Lanka’s biggest threat with the ball: the star players had found a response.Sri Lanka must have feared the game was up when Ravi Bopara struck 28 from the last over, from Shaminda Eranga, including three sixes and two fours, leaving Angelo Mathews mentally rewriting his close-of-innings speech in the Sri Lanka huddle as Bopara left the ground to rousing cheers.Three England wickets had fallen in six balls at the death, including Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler, the latter second ball for 0 – the batsmen they look to for the final flourish both silenced. But Bopara tore into Eranga, depositing him for sixes over long-on, extra cover and long-on again. He even took two runs off the only ball that Eranga managed to get into the blockhole. That was the excitement; the rest belonged to Trott. His uncanny ability to turn a one-day international innings into an algorithm might not thrill cricket crowds around the world, but when he bats through, it requires something special in return for England to lose.He worked the leg side with alacrity and, by the time he fell lbw, sweeping at Rangana Herath’s left-arm spin, his time had been served. His one-day record is proven, his method brings victory more often than not, and many of those who rail against his methodical ways are railing, in part, about the fact that he is limiting the spectacle.Alongside Trott, Root provided the perkiest of half-centuries, built on an appreciation of quick ones and twos and occasional inventiveness. If Root was shaken by his altercation with David Warner in the Walkabout bar in Birmingham on Sunday, he did not show it for a moment. Root fell to a slower offcutter from Malinga and left with a wink. Perhaps he winked at Warner, in his green and gold wig, and rued the consequences?Sri Lanka dropped four catches in all, the most embarrassing of the lot from their eventual saviour, Sangakkara, who dashed from behind the stumps to claim Root’s skier to midwicket, and shouted loudly enough, but then feared Mathews was about to collide with him and fumbled the ball in the process.Dilshan also had the sort of afternoon that befalls this celebrated fielder so rarely. He dropped three catches in all, reprieving Alastair Cook twice, the first a tough diving chance to his right at backward point and the second an easier return catch when again he dived to his right but the ball eluded him. His third mishap, against Root, was a swirler as he dashed back from backward point. At the end of the night, all that was forgotten. A lively tournament had been brought alive.

Reinforced Super Kings seek first win

Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)Kings XI Punjab were off to a flying start in IPL 2013•BCCI

Big Picture

Kings XI Punjab and Chennai Super Kings had contrasting starts to IPL 2013. While Kings XI thrashed Pune Warriors in an away game, Super Kings slipped up after a dominant beginning in Chennai, handing Mumbai Indians a victory. Going into their second matches, both teams are at opposite ends of the points table, ends neither is too familiar with. For Kings XI, it was a near-perfect display. They were disciplined with the ball, energetic with the bat and electric in the field. Parvinder Awana bowled possibly the delivery of the IPL so far, angling in and moving across Angelo Mathews to have him caught behind. Mandeep Singh, with a little help from Adam Gilchrist, accounted for Marlon Samuels with an inch-perfect throw from deep midwicket. Then there was Gurkeerat Singh’s spectacular, flying take in the long leg region, to get rid of Ross Taylor. Three special moments, which ripped the heart out of Warriors’ batting. Gilchrist and Manan Vohra then sealed things in style, knocking off the target of 100 with almost eight overs to spare.Super Kings, on the other hand, had Mumbai at 83 for 6 after 12 overs, before Kieron Pollard showed grit and gumption. Still, the target of 149 was hardly daunting for a line-up like Super Kings’. A series of poor shots though pushed them so far behind in the chase that even a MS Dhoni special could not rescue the team. But Super Kings have seen it all before, and one game is hardly a measure of how an IPL season could turn out. If the players’ tweets ribbing Ravindra Jadeja on the eve of the Mohali match are any indication, team morale is high. Plus, they have reinforcements in the form of South African allrounders, Albie Morkel and Chris Morris, who arrived following the conclusion of their domestic commitments. Morkel was an injury worry, turning an ankle during South Africa’s T20 final on Sunday, but he has since tweeted that his scans are clear.Kings XI are still without the services of injured Australian batsman Shaun Marsh – he tweeted on Saturday that he hoped to be with the team in a week’s time.

Players to watch

So far, this IPL has thrown up a number of unlikely heroes. Rahul Shukla impressed with his pace for Rajasthan Royals, and Hanuma Vihari with an all-round showing for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Then there was 19-year-old Manan Vohra for Kings XI. Admittedly, he was not really under any pressure against Warriors, with the target being a paltry 100, but the fact that it was his IPL debut compensated for that; it was his first real taste of the crowds, the TV cameras, the hype. How did he respond? By slamming five fours in his first seven balls, carving through the covers, flicking through the leg side and, most impressively, swiveling to pull. He eventually finished unbeaten on 43 off 28. Vohra continuing where he left off will go a long way in helping Kings XI build on their remarkable start to the tournament.Chris Morris set his base price at US$20,000 in February’s IPL auction. He was bought for US$625,000; Super Kings paid 31 times the base price for the allrounder, who can be expected to produce accurate, pacy spells, and get a few big hits away down the order. Morris first caught the eye at the 2012 Champions League where his team, Lions, finished runners-up. On Sunday, he took 2 for 18 at 5.68 as Lions triumphed in the Ram Slam T20 Challenge, claiming the big wickets of Herschelle Gibbs and Albie Morkel. With Morkel unlikely to be 100% fit after his ankle trouble, and Ben Laughlin having an average game against Mumbai, there’s a good chance Morris will get an IPL debut on Wednesday.

Stats and trivia

  • Kings XI have won four of their last five IPL matches against Super Kings. Before that, they’d lost five in a row against them.

  • MS Dhoni has scored three fifties in eight innings against Kings XI, averaging 44.80 at a strike rate of 155.55

Quotes

“Kings XI Punjab have never won their opening match in the IPL earlier. That is the hoodoo we have got rid of. Every team hopes to start a tournament with a win and so we are going towards the right direction.”

Shahzad, Hassan help Afghanistan make it 2-0

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAfghanistan wrapped up the Twenty20 series against Scotland 2-0 with another thumping win in Sharjah. Hamid Hassan picked up four wickets to restrict Scotland to 139, then Mohammad Shahzad produced another impactful innings to help the team achieve the target with 15 balls to spare.Scotland chose to bat and lost opener Richie Berrington in the first over. They produced a better batting performance than the first match as Matt Machan and Calum McLeod steered the team to 74 for 2 in the 11th over. But once Machan was out to Samiullah Shenwari, regular wickets kept tumbling. Only Moneeb Iqbal’s late runs helped them to 139, before Hassan collected two wickets off the last two balls.Afghanistan started their chase at a frenetic pace with Karim Sadiq taking 15 runs off the second over. Sadiq put up a half-century stand with Nawroz Mangal, and once they were out, Shahzad continued his form from the previous match by scoring 46 off 25 balls. his innings included three boundaries and two sixes and though he was out in the 15th over, he had taken the team only 15 runs short of the win, which the other batsmen completed easily. The two teams are now scheduled to play two ODIs in Sharjah followed by an ICC Intercontinental Cup match in Abu Dhabi.

It's a virtual knockout as Scotland take on Oman in last league game

Oman, Bangladesh and Scotland are bunched so closely together on NRR that nothing is certain till all the games get over

Shashank Kishore20-Oct-2021

Big picture

Imagine this: You beat a Full Member and fellow Associate in a four-team pool, and feel you have done enough. But then you are told you have to win the third game too. It’s a reality Scotland are staring at. It could be frustrating for some, but Scotland are ready to embrace the pressures of a potential knockout. They were looking good to carve out a big lead in terms of net run-rate when Papua New Guinea slumped to 35 for 5 in their chase of 166 on Tuesday. But in playing a blinder that gave Scotland the jitters, Norman Vanua also reduced PNG’s margin of defeat to 17 runs, leaving Scotland, Oman and Bangladesh all bunched together. Now, the only way Scotland can progress with two wins is if PNG upset Bangladesh, though that seems a task too steep, on the face of it. Oman, meanwhile, simply have to win by any margin to make it through.Oman will ride on massive home support. Scotland will ride on form and familiarity of conditions, having trained and played in the country for close to six weeks now. There’s also the added incentive for the winners: a direct entry into next year’s T20 World Cup in Australia. Unfortunately for this tournament, only one of them might be left standing at the end of this. The good thing for the two teams, however, is that the Bangladesh vs PNG game will be over by the time they start.

In the spotlight

Scotland captain Kyle Coetzer hasn’t topped 17 in his last five innings, including the warm-ups. Against Bangladesh, he was out for a seven-ball duck, beaten on the outside edge. On Wednesday, PNG left-arm seamer Kabua Morea deceived him with an inswinger that beat his inside edge to crash into the stumps when he was on 6. But Scotland coach Shane Burger believes Coetzer is batting “unbelievably well” in the nets and it’s just a matter of time before the tide turns.Jatinder Singh is the main man when it comes to Oman’s chances•ICC via Getty

With scores of 73* and 40, Jatinder Singh has clearly towered over the rest of Oman’s batting. Five years ago, Jatinder was part of Oman cricket history when they recorded their first-ever World Cup win, against Ireland. On Thursday, he can add another chapter to that history if he can help Oman get over the line and qualify for the Super 12s.

Team news

Safyaan Sharif, the fast bowler, missed the game against PNG because of a groin strain. Burger said the team will wait on him, even though he’s in better shape now. However, with Alasdair Evans impressing with figures of 1 for 22 off four overs in his first outing of the tournament on Tuesday, it’s likely Scotland will remain unchanged.Scotland (probable): 1 Kyle Coetzer (capt), 2 George Munsey, 3 Matthew Cross (wk), 4 Richie Berrington, 5 Calum MacLeod, 6 Mathew Leask, 7 Chris Greaves, 8 Mark Watt, 9 Josh Davey, 10 Alasdair Evans, 11 Brad WhealAqib Ilyas, the Oman batter, said they could strengthen their bowling, bringing in either a fast bowler or a legspinner depending on the surface. That could mean one of the lower-order batters, Sandeep Goud probably, makes way. Fayyaz Butt could come in.Oman (probable): 1 Aqib Ilyas, 2 Jatinder Singh, 3 Khawar Ali, 4 Zeeshan Maqsood (capt), 5 Kashyap Prajapati, 6 Naseem Khushi (wk), 7 Mohammad Nadeem, 8 Ayaan Khan, 9 Fayyaz Butt, 10 Kaleemullah, 11 Bilal Khan

Stats and trivia

  • George Munsey’s 55 sixes are the most by a Scotland player in T20Is. He also holds the record for the highest individual score for his country (127*) in the format.
  • Coetzer and Calum MacLeod are the only two players from Scotland’s maiden T20 World Cup outing in 2007 to still be playing.
  • Aqib Ilyas nearly qualified to play for the UAE after having moved there to study in 2010. The 29-year-old, who has a a civil engineering degree, excelled in club cricket and was even invited to train with the UAE national team. He chose Oman, his home country.

Quotes

“If there’s any team that understands this is a must-win game, it’s probably Scotland, who often go into competitions knowing every game is must-win game. We spoke of topping the group, that was a certainly a goal, something we wanted to achieve before we arrived here. We spoke about it, planned for it, it won’t surprise me if we do that.”
“Fielding is key, a player [Mohammad Naim] who was dropped in the 20s went on to make 70, that made a big difference against Bangladesh. We can’t afford to drop catches. Also as batters, we shouldn’t be leaving it to the other players. The small things matter.”

Chanderpaul leads West Indies rearguard

Scorecard and ball-by-ball commentaryEven when he was given out lbw to Tim Bresnan, Shivnarine Chanderpaul survived, thanks to the DRS•Getty Images

It is perhaps no surprise that Shivnarine Chanderpaul inhabits his own little world. It must be much safer there. When he made his Test debut 18 years ago, West Indies were No. 1 in the world. Now Test match victories are a rarity and the sound of Caribbean cricket is a prolonged lamentation for what has gone before.West Indies, trailing by 155 runs on first innings, and already widely dismissed as no-hopers after the first two days of a three-match series, lost three top-order wickets for no runs in nine balls on the verge of tea and until Chanderpaul put up unyielding resistance with an unbeaten 34 in two-and-a-half hours (that he made so many was due to a late flurry) there was a possibility that they could lose in three days. Instead, they trail by 35 runs with six wickets remaining and have the right to a measure of respect.Chanderpaul was intent upon batting time. He blocked a lot and left a lot. His leave is an interesting phenomenon because as he comes out of his square-on stance, his right shoulder hurtles towards the ball at roughly the same time his arms withdraw the bat in the opposite direction. Do not attempt this at home unless you have a Level 4 coaching certificate and medical insurance. He shows colossal commitment to the cause; he just shows it in his own, sometimes contrary, way. He had six from 53 balls when a mistimed pull against Stuart Broad gave the crowd meagre sustenance; 13 from 71 when he managed his first boundary, an offside push against James Anderson which he just happened to time down the hill. There were dots in the scorebook and dots before the eyes. England imagined that Tim Bresnan had him lbw on 22 from 84 balls but lost a review as umpire Marais Erasmus’ assessment that the ball was leg side was supported by Hawk Eye. They have bowled wide at him and stalemate has ensued.England’s pace attack had begun by firing in more short balls than has become their habit and it paid dividends. Adrian Barath fell to a top-of-off delivery from Bresnan, who found slight movement to have him caught at the wicket, Kieron Powell to a sucker punch as Andrew Strauss pushed Ian Bell back to deep square and Powell obligingly hooked Stuart Broad into his hands. Then Darren Bravo was involved in his second run-out incident of the match, only this time, unlike the first innings when Chanderpaul pulled rank, Bravo did the same to Kirk Edwards. Bravo squirted Bresnan in front of square on the off side then belatedly turned down the run with Edwards halfway down the pitch, whereupon Jonny Bairstow ran him out with a direct hit. There was also reward for Graeme Swann’s offspin, a beautifully disguised arm ball that Bravo, in an aberration, allowed to drift down the slope into his off stump.England, after sedately taking control on the second day, had to work much harder to extend their advantage as they were dismissed 45 minutes into the afternoon session, losing their last seven wickets for 132 runs. Strauss had accepted a wonderful opportunity on Friday to restate the impregnability of his position as England captain, on the Lord’s ground he loves so much. He added only a single to his overnight 121 before West Indies’ captain Darren Sammy successfully turned to DRS to win a wicket for Kemar Roach. Hot Spot showed a faint inside edge as well as contact with his trousers after the ball had nipped back. Strauss must have been grateful that he had played the bulk of his innings the previous day.Ian Bell, another England batsman seeking to recover from a tormented winter, played resourcefully in more demanding circumstances before he was last out for 61, hooking Shannon Gabriel to deep square. His ninth-wicket stand of 55 in seven overs with the ebullient Swann was a useful bonus for England and, in West Indies’ terms, wasted much of their good work.A West Indies bowling attack that had failed to swing or seam the ball the previous day was a different proposition. Fidel Edwards swung the ball most noticeably and there was a bit off seam about too, with Gabriel picking up his first three Test wickets. The cloud cover was similar and so were the lengths West Indies bowled, the technique they displayed and their purpose. It could only be the ball.Such are the glorious random aspects of cricket. Weather, pitches and even cricket balls can change from day to day. In some sports, and some parts of the world, the lack of uniformity would be viewed as a weakness; in Test cricket it is rightly seen as a strength. But it must have been galling for West Indies.Bairstow, who had stifled an occasional yawn on the balcony the previous day as he watched England make guarded progress, was presented with a more onerous batting debut than he might have expected. He took his first ball in Test cricket, from Roach, on the chest – a badge of honour in no time – but looked settled for a debutant and unveiled three fine boundaries – two leg-side clips and a cover drive – before Roach brought one back to have him lbw.England were anxious to push on positively with rain forecast later in the game. But Matt Prior whipped across one to give Gabriel his first Test wicket and, in the following over, Bresnan fell for nought, dangling his bat at a delivery from Sammy that seamed away.England reached lunch at 341 for 7 and Stuart Broad faced only one delivery afterwards as Edwards skimmed his off bail. Swann fell as did Prior, bowled by Gabriel as he aimed through midwicket, but not before he had exacted some damage, making 30 from 25 balls as he feasted on several wide, fullish deliveries. He had been welcomed with a stomach-high beamer from Edwards, accidental, but worthy nevertheless of a formal first warning by the umpires for intimidatory bowling.
