Michael Hussey is in major doubt for the World Cup after having surgery on his left leg just hours after being named in Australia’s 15-man squad

Michael Hussey is in major doubt for the World Cup after having surgery on his left leg just hours after being named in Australia’s 15-man squad. Hussey hurt his hamstring in Sunday’s ODI victory in Melbourne and initially thought the problem was minor. But scans revealed one of the hamstring tendons had torn from the inner side of his knee.”The recovery time and availability for the World Cup will be dependent on his progress with the rehabilitation programme in the coming weeks,” Australia’s physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said. Hussey has been replaced for the next three games of the one-day series by Shaun Marsh, who is now a big chance of playing at his first World Cup.Australia’s first match of the global event is against Zimbabwe on February 21 in Ahmedabad, leaving Hussey racing to recover. The quarter-finals start a month later and Hussey is such an important player that he could be allowed to enter the tournament when the knockout games are approaching. Australia were in a similar situation four years ago when Andrew Symonds hurt his arm, but returned to help the side to the trophy.”It’s just happened at a bad time,” Hilditch said before Hussey had surgery. “Obviously Mike’s a key player of our squad so he’s in this squad, but a final decision whether he’s going to be fit or not will be made closer to our departure date.”Ricky Ponting hopes his little finger will be right for the start of the tournament. He broke it while fielding during the third Ashes Test in Perth and missed the Sydney match, with the surgery ruling him out of the England ODIs.”I’m hoping to be right for the start of the World Cup,” Ponting said. “My finger’s coming along okay, I guess. I haven’t been able to do anything for the last couple of weeks post-surgery, but I’ve got a bit more movement now.”The finger is still in a splint and Ponting said it would be looked at by a doctor once a week. “I’m pretty keen to get a bat back in my hands again and I’m going to be around the team, certainly this week down in Hobart for the second game,” he said.Ponting is 36 and heading to his fifth World Cup, but he said even a fourth consecutive victory would not hide the pain of the Ashes defeat. “I’m not sure if anything would erase what’s just happened,” he said. “Payback’s going to be hard to get after losing the Ashes.”Australia’s position in ODIs is much better than in Tests, where they sit fifth, and Ponting remains confident of his side’s chances. “We’re quite clearly the No.1-ranked one-day team in the world, and I think just little things like the great win that we had the other night shows that this one-day team is certainly on the right track,” he said. “We’ve got a really proud record in the subcontinent and we’ll be going there to do everything we can to win another World Cup.”

Predicted Leeds XI, team news v Arsenal

Leeds United are back in Premier League action this afternoon and they’ll be looking to get their survival bid back on track with a result down in the capital.

Jesse Marsch’s side travel to north London to face an in-form Arsenal side, who too need points to maintain ground in the race for the top four.

Last time out, the Yorkshire outfit were thrashed 4-0 by defending champions Manchester City but that is their only defeat in six matches.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more” title=”Read the latest Leeds United news and rumours!”]

After naming a back five against Pep Guardiola’s defending champions and sustaining a season-ending injury to the versatile Stuart Dallas, the American head coach is left with plenty to ponder in terms of team selection.

Here’s the XI we’re predicting at the Emirates Stadium today…

There should be no surprises between the sticks as tried and trusted no.1 Illan Meslier continues his shot-stopping duties.

However, it could be all change in the backline as club captain Liam Cooper is expected to start, according to LeedsLive reporter Beren Cross. “Cooper and [Diego] Llorente [are] expected to be available on Sunday. Marsch went as far as expecting his captain to play,” he tweeted ahead of the game.

That should see the Scotsman come straight in for Robin Koch, whilst we may also see the Spaniard return, too, taking the place of Junior Firpo, whose struggles in the top-flight continued last weekend.

The £55k-per-week flop’s defending was lambasted as “schoolboy” by former goalkeeper Paul Robinson to the BBC.

It’s a move that could see Pascal Struijk shift across to left-back, with Luke Ayling back in his natural right-back role.

With a tweak in formation, we’re likely to see Kalvin Phillips partner Mateusz Klich at the base of midfield, especially with Adam Forshaw absent through injury and they’ll be joined by Rodrigo in the no.10 role.

Out wide, it should be Raphinha on the right but there’s a tough dilemma on the left as Jack Harrison has flattered to deceive in recent outings. The American could turn to Daniel James after he was named among the substitutes at Elland Road last week.

Meanwhile, leading the line, we could see a rare start for young academy sensation Joe Gelhardt, given he’s the only fit and available striker. That would make him the fourth and final change from the City thrashing.

Predicted Leeds XI (4-2-3-1): Meslier; Struijk, Cooper, Llorente, Ayling; Klich, Phillips; James, Rodrigo, Raphinha; Gelhardt

Leeds: Orta interested in Targett

Leeds United are interested in a deal to bring Matt Targett to Elland Road in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by 90min, who claim that sources have revealed Victor Orta is hoping to hijack Newcastle United’s £15m signing of the Aston Villa loanee this summer, by launching an offensive of his own for the 26-year-old left-back.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-marsch-raphinha-dest-philhay” title=”Read the latest Leeds news!”]

The report goes on to state that both Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leicester City are also keen on the former England U21 international, however, Targett’s preferred destination is thought to be St. James’ Park.

Orta must move

Considering how impressive Targett has been following his January switch to Newcastle, coupled with Junior Firpo’s struggles on the left of the Leeds’ backline following his own £13m move to Elland Road last summer, it is not difficult to see why Orta would be keen on a deal for the Aston Villa defender at the end of the season.

Indeed, over his 12 Premier League appearances for the Magpies, the £15.3m-rated full-back has been in fantastic form for Eddie Howe’s side, making an average of 2.3 tackles, 1.6 interceptions, 2.3 clearances and 0.2 blocks per game.

The £35k-per-week defender has also impressed in a creative capacity, making an average of 1.3 key passes, 1.6 crosses and 1.8 long balls per fixture, in addition to completing 0.6 dribbles and taking 0.5 shots per outing.

These returns have seen the player who Aaron Stokes dubbed a “tremendous” signing and James Hendicott labelled a “beast” average a WhoScored match rating of 6.99, ranking him as Newcastle’s fifth-best player in the top flight.

Meanwhile, over Firpo’s 19 league fixtures for the Whites, the £10.8m-rated left-back has been rather less impressive, averaging an extremely disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.59, ranking him as Jesse Marsch’s seventh-worst performer in the division.

As such, it is clear to see that the signing of Targett would be a huge upgrade on the 25-year-old Dominican Republic international, leading us to believe that Orta must do all he can to land the former England youth international this summer.

However, with Newcastle also appearing extremely keen on making the defender’s temporary stay at St. James’ Park a permanent move at the end of the current campaign, the Spanish sporting director certainly has a battle on his hands for the Aston Villa sensation.

Kent's allrounders seal victory

ScorecardDarren Stevens top-scored for Kent with an unbeaten 49•Getty Images

Eye catching allround performances by Azhar Mahmood and Darren Stevens eased Kent to a 42-run victory over Nottinghamshire in a Clydesdale Bank 40 game reduced to 16 overs a side.Heavy rain delayed the start for three-and-a-half hours, but it was Kent who appeared sharper with bat and ball when play finally got under way in front of a small Canterbury crowd at 5.15pm.Batting first having lost the toss, Kent posted 45 through openers Rob Key and Joe Denly, who each scored 22 before running themselves out. At the start of the 10th over Martin van Jaarsveld then missed an attempted sweep against Samit Patel to have leg stump pegged back and, at 63 for 3, Kent appeared unlikely to post a competitive score.Kent’s fourth-wicket partners had other ideas, however, as they tucked into the Nottinghamshire attack to add 72 from 35 balls to set the Outlaws a testing asking rate of 8.5 an over for victory. They took 22 from one over from Paul Franks as Stevens dashed to 49 from 35 balls – including three fours and as many sixes, one of which landed in the new St Lawrence lime tree.Mahmood chipped in with 29 off 15 deliveries and cleared the ropes twice as Franks conceded 33 off his three wicketless overs. Seemingly shell-shocked at the punishment their bowlers had received, Nottinghamshire got off to a poor start to their run chase and, once behind theasking rate, never really recovered their composure. The visitors lost Ali Brown in the second over, the right-hander missed an expansive drive to have off stump plucked out by his former Surrey team-mate Mahmood. To the next delivery Matthew Wood sliced a cover drive straight into the hands of Matt Coles at point and though Samit Patel survived the hat-trick ball he soon holed out in the deep off Simon Cook.Top-scorer Alex Hales missed a slog sweep against James Tredwell to go for 21 from 17 balls and Cook struck again by having Chris Read superbly caught late cutting by Geraint Jones when stood up to the stumps. With the light fading faster than Nottinghamshire’s victory hopes, Coles put the result beyond doubt by taking three wickets for three runs in the space of five balls.Franks was yorked, Graeme White heaved across the line to lose off stump then Steven Mullaney waltzed across his stumps to be pinned leg before wicket as Nottinghamshire slid to only their second defeat in nine starts. Coles finished with 3 for 7, while Cook and Mahmood bagged two wickets apiece to secure Kent’s fourth win of the group stages.

West Ham plotting swoop for Adarabioyo

West Ham United are plotting a move to bring Tosin Adarabioyo to the London Stadium in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Claret & Hugh, with the West Ham insider revealing that David Moyes is likely to make a move for the Fulham centre-back at the end of the current campaign, with an offer somewhere in the region of £22m believed to be enough to get a deal over the line for the 24-year-old.

Regarding the Hammers’ interest in the former Manchester City defender, Claret & Hugh state: “West Ham boss David Moyes is likely to move for Fulham central defender Tosin Adarabioyo as he looks to reinforce the defence this summer. Adarabioyo has been on Moyes’ shortlist for several months and a bid of around £22m is likely to get him into the Hammers.”

Moyes can finally axe Diop with Adarabioyo

Considering West Ham’s rather desperate need of central defensive reinforcements, Angelo Ogbonna being ruled out for the remainder of the season with an ACL injury, Issa Diop having largely failed to impress while filling in for the Italian and Kurt Zouma’s future appearing uncertain following off-field issues, it is easy to see why Moyes is reported to be plotting a move for a new centre-back this summer – especially one as talented as Adarabioyo.

Indeed, over his 26 Championship appearances so far this season, the £13.5m-rated defender has been in imperious form for Marco Silva’s side, helping Fulham keep eight clean sheets, scoring two goals and providing one assist, as well as making an average of 1.5 interceptions, 1.1 tackles, 3.8 clearances and winning five duels – at a success rate of 70% – per game.

These returns have seen the player who Pep Guardiola dubbed an “exceptional” talent average a rather remarkable SofaScore match rating of 7.24, not only ranking the 24-year-old as the eighth-best player in the entire division but also as the best defender.

In comparison, over Diop’s nine Premier League outings in the current campaign, the £10.8m-rated centre-back has helped his side keep two clean sheets and provided his teammates with one assist, as well as making an average of 0.7 interceptions, one tackle, 3.6 clearances and winning 2.8 duels – at a success rate of 53% – per fixture.

These returns have seen the 25-year-old who Toby Cudworth labelled a “frightening” player average an extremely disappointing SofaScore match rating of just 6.68, ranking him as Moyes’ seventh-worst performer in the league.

As such, while it is true that Diop turned in an admirable display in the 2-2 draw with Leicester City on Sunday, it would nevertheless appear an extremely wise move for the 58-year-old Hammers boss to finally cut his losses on the former France U21 international this summer, and subsequently reinvest the transfer fee received – as well as his £67k-per-week wages – for the defender into a move for Adarabioyo.

Everton transfer news on El Ghazi

Many Everton fans have been left fuming as a transfer revelation has emerged involving Anwar El Ghazi.

As per The Athletic, the former Aston Villa ace was not on their radar at the start of the January transfer window, and only came up in conversation between owner Farhad Moshiri and his advisor, Kia Joorabchian.

It suggests that there was a lack of planning before the window started over potential incomings in attacking areas, given that they had already signed full-backs Nathan Patterson and Vitaliy Mykolenko.

There must also be question marks over their scouting departments and how effectively they are using them, if Moshiri and Joorabchian have came up with the signing themselves.

Nonetheless, with a sizeable number of wingers in the squad already, El Ghazi did seem like a strange signing at the time.

Afridi's century flattens Bangladesh

A new-look Pakistan, led by a new-look Shahid Afridi, bowed out of the Asia Cup with little to boast about but with their reputations enhanced, while Bangladesh ended their campaign by reaffirming the gulf between them and the top-flight teams

Afridi unleashed the kind of fury he is famous for to launch Pakistan to their highest ODI score, and subsequently their first victory in 2010. Bangladesh, however, belied a complete lack of purpose in both innings, as the match meandered to the kind of denouement that has administrators concerned about the future of ODI cricket.Bangladesh’s spirit was snuffed in the first half when they were caught out without a plan by the Afridi redux – as aggressive as the marauder of old, but inventive and measured as well. These are early days yet, but captaincy is bringing out the best in Afridi. He has retained the willingness to attack but, entrusted with the responsibility of shepherding a young team, has weeded out the risks. Without having to heave across the line, at least until he gets set, Afridi once again showed he has the range to score at enviable pace.Having collared Sri Lanka’s attack in more trying conditions, Afridi barely broke a sweat today. With Umar Akmal already in the groove when he entered in the 29th over, Afridi worked the spinners around for a couple of overs. He flexed his muscles in the 32nd, lofting Suhrawadi Shuvo over long on for six and cashing in on the over-compensation by pulling for four. There were two strokes of luck soon after: an inside edge missed the stumps, and a skier was dropped by Mashrafe Mortaza. After that, however, Afridi unleashed and Pakistan accelerated at a ridiculous rate.Smart Stats

Shahid Afridi scored the sixth fastest ODI century in terms of balls faced. He has three of the top six

Afridi has now hit the most sixes in ODIs, going past Jayasuriya. He now has 272

Pakistan’s 385 was their highest ODI total, going past the 371 against Sri Lanka in 1996-97

Pakistan scored 129 runs from overs 41 to 50, the eighth highest on the list of most runs in the last ten overs in ODIs since 2000

Shafiul Islam, who leaked 95 runs, is sixth on the list of bowlers with the worst economy-rates in a ten-over spell

An extra-cover drive, a tickle and a whiplashed cut off Mortaza gave Bangladesh a trailer of what was to follow. After reaching his fifty in the 41st over, Afridi plundered 39 off 10 balls, with eight fours and a six, off Mahmudullah, Shakib Al Hasab and Shafiul Islam. The two batsmen had been tied on 41 at the end of the 39th over; five overs later, Umar had reached a steady fifty, while his captain was three short of a hundred. Umar departed in the 45th over, just before the batting Powerplay. In the 46th, Afridi helped Razzak to fine leg to reach 100, off 53 balls, and in the same over he cut for four more before finishing with a loft over long on for his 271st six – the most by any batsman in ODI history. He smashed another length offering from Shafiul for No. 272 and stole one more four before his one-handed pull landed in the hands of square leg. Abdul Razzaq hustled 21 off nine balls, leaving the hapless Shafiul nursing figures of 3 for 95. The last ball of the innings was smeared over long off for six – Bangladesh had bled 120 runs in the last nine overs, and Pakistan had reached their highest ODI total, eclipsing a 13 year-old record, that was set up by – take a guess. Before Afridi’s assault, Pakistan’s openers laid the foundation in more sober fashion. After spanking his second ball for a six over extra cover, Shahzaib Hasan served notice of both his strengths and intentions by repeatedly driving Mashrafe Mortaza on the up. Shahzaib rushed to his maiden ODI fifty before he fell trying to heave Abdur Razzak across the line in the 13th over, having dominated the opening stand of 81 in 12.3 overs. With Shahzaib scoring freely, Imran Farhat had the breathing space to play out the seamers before settling in against spin. Having brought up his seventh ODI fifty, he succumbed to his own cheekiness, missing a late cut off Shakib. Bangladesh’s spinners rallied in the period of play following the 25-over mark, culminating in Asad Shafiq’s stumping in the 29th over. That was the Bangladesh captain’s 100th ODI wicket, and it gave his side an outside chance to seize the initiative, but his opposite number upset his plans.Bangladesh’s batsmen, reeling from the carnage, focused on batting out fifty overs instead of taking a shot at the target. Their approach ensured there was no interest left in the second half of the contest. Imrul Kayes was the biggest culprit, dawdling around without any intent to score, while Tamim Iqbal showed characteristic spunk in taking on Mohammad Asif. He had driven, flicked and pulled him for fours before Asif struck with a slow and short off-cutter. With Tamim’s dismissal, Bangladesh’s hopes of making anything out of the game receded. In an inexplicable display that underlined the rift between Bangladesh and the rest, Kayes and Junaid Siddique settled in to accumulate. Despite cutting out all risks against a spirited but tired attack, neither of them could reach three-figures. Siddique eventually unfurled a few shots for the gallery, but no one was applauding.

Rangers eye Newcastle ace White

Craig Hope has revealed that Glasgow Rangers are now ‘monitoring’ Joe White ahead of a potential move before the January transfer window shuts.

The Lowdown: Highly-rated

White is a highly-rated midfield prospect with Newcastle United, so much so that the newly-rich Magpies want to tie him down to a new deal.

He has been described as ‘talented’ by Toon manager Eddie Howe, while former NUFC boss Steve Bruce claimed back in August that he has ‘caught the eye’ with his ‘yard of pace’, while looking ‘bigger and stronger’ since he last saw him (The Shields Gazette).

The English starlet is six-foot-one, and at just 19 years of age, clearly has a lot of potential going by his list of plaudits.

The Latest: Rangers ‘monitoring’

As per The Daily Mail journalist Hope, the Ibrox faithful are now ‘monitoring’ his situation at St. James’ Park along with a number of other high-profile clubs, in case White’s proposed new contract does not go to plan, or perhaps with the thought of taking him on loan:

“Newcastle set to secure future of Joe White after agreeing terms on new deal.

“19-yr-old is out of contract this summer with Celtic, Rangers, Leeds & Chelsea all monitoring situation.”

In his article, the journalist added that White ‘could now go out on loan in the coming days’.

The Verdict: One for the future

White is certainly one for the future, and if the Teddy Bears cold fend off the competition for his signature, then it would prove to be a real coup.

The attacking midfielder has impressed through the youth ranks on Tyneside, scoring ten goals and making a further 13 assists in 63 games in total over all competitions across the last four seasons (Transfermarkt), and is surely a player that Giovanni van Bronckhorst would be excited to work with.

Nonetheless, White has a lot of promise, and judging by his record and what has been said about him already, he could easily become a fans favourite for the Light Blues, even if only for a temporary spell.
