Sangakkara's stunning hundred keeps Sri Lanka alive

Only India, once, had ever successfully chased such a daunting target in an ODI at The Oval, but Sri Lanka made a confident start

Kumar Sangakkara has never been part of a Sri Lanka team winning a major ICC one-day trophy outright. Neither have the other outstanding players of this Sri Lanka era – Mahela Jayawardene, Lasith Malinga or Tillakaratne Dilshan. But they will believe there is still time after Sangakkara’s magnificent unbeaten 134 from 135 balls pulled off an improbable run chase against England by seven wickets with 17 balls to spare at The Oval.Only India had ever pulled off such a daunting target on this ground and, if Sri Lanka had failed to hit such heights, they would have been eliminated. But, as the clouds cleared, the pitch was encouraging and Sangakkara, driven by the vision that his redoubtable career need not go unrewarded, summoned a shrewd and inspired response.England now face New Zealand in Cardiff in their final match on Sunday and Sri Lanka are pitted against Australia at The Oval the following day with Group A in the balance.ODI batting England style, a methodical, statistically-justified policy that involves stripping as much risk out of the game as possible, setting up an appropriate base and then staking much on havoc at the end had been found wanting, and as Sangakkara drove Sri Lanka towards victory, its chief architect, Jonathan Trott, who had made 76 from 87 balls in inimitable style, watched in forlorn mood from the dressing room, ice pack pressed to a strained thigh.Sangakkara marshalled Sri Lanka’s response superbly despite the initially distracting, and ultimately inspired, presence of the promoted tail-ender, Nuwan Kulasekara, who was sent in to No. 5 to have a swing in the Powerplay and who for a prolonged period was about as useful to Sangakkara as a loose horse in the Grand National. His promotion looked ill-judged as he struggled against James Anderson, but when he launched Graeme Swann’s offspin for two successive leg-side sixes, and continued to thrash his way to an unbeaten 58 from 38 balls it abruptly became a masterstroke and long before the end had left England looking demoralised.Kulasekara also knew his place. Shortly after Sangakkara reached his 15th ODI hundred, and his first against England, he stumbled in mid-pitch and, recognising the danger of a run out, Kulasekara ran alongside him to ensure that he would be run out if anybody would be. In his instantaneous recognition that he must protect his partner at all costs, it spoke volumes for his good sense. When Sangakkara responded by hoisting Anderson’s slower ball for six, it communicated that he was worth preserving. Anderson was impressive, and England’s ground fielding, led by the sub Jonny Bairstow, was exceptional at times, but three overs from Joe Root, England’s insurance bowler, cost 27, and Stuart Broad had an expensive night. Jayawardene and Dilshan also played their part for Sri Lanka with a couple of 40s and Malinga was Sri Lanka’s biggest threat with the ball: the star players had found a response.Sri Lanka must have feared the game was up when Ravi Bopara struck 28 from the last over, from Shaminda Eranga, including three sixes and two fours, leaving Angelo Mathews mentally rewriting his close-of-innings speech in the Sri Lanka huddle as Bopara left the ground to rousing cheers.Three England wickets had fallen in six balls at the death, including Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler, the latter second ball for 0 – the batsmen they look to for the final flourish both silenced. But Bopara tore into Eranga, depositing him for sixes over long-on, extra cover and long-on again. He even took two runs off the only ball that Eranga managed to get into the blockhole. That was the excitement; the rest belonged to Trott. His uncanny ability to turn a one-day international innings into an algorithm might not thrill cricket crowds around the world, but when he bats through, it requires something special in return for England to lose.He worked the leg side with alacrity and, by the time he fell lbw, sweeping at Rangana Herath’s left-arm spin, his time had been served. His one-day record is proven, his method brings victory more often than not, and many of those who rail against his methodical ways are railing, in part, about the fact that he is limiting the spectacle.Alongside Trott, Root provided the perkiest of half-centuries, built on an appreciation of quick ones and twos and occasional inventiveness. If Root was shaken by his altercation with David Warner in the Walkabout bar in Birmingham on Sunday, he did not show it for a moment. Root fell to a slower offcutter from Malinga and left with a wink. Perhaps he winked at Warner, in his green and gold wig, and rued the consequences?Sri Lanka dropped four catches in all, the most embarrassing of the lot from their eventual saviour, Sangakkara, who dashed from behind the stumps to claim Root’s skier to midwicket, and shouted loudly enough, but then feared Mathews was about to collide with him and fumbled the ball in the process.Dilshan also had the sort of afternoon that befalls this celebrated fielder so rarely. He dropped three catches in all, reprieving Alastair Cook twice, the first a tough diving chance to his right at backward point and the second an easier return catch when again he dived to his right but the ball eluded him. His third mishap, against Root, was a swirler as he dashed back from backward point. At the end of the night, all that was forgotten. A lively tournament had been brought alive.

Akram Khan will leave his position as chairman of Bangladesh’s selection committee on the day the BCB election dates are announced. He confirmed this on Thursday after being asked to continue in the role till September, along with the other selectors Habibul Bashar and Minhazul Abedin. In the meantime, the BCB will formally ask the National Sports Council, Bangladesh’s sports regulatory body, to announce the board election dates. According to BCB president Nazmul Hassan, that could very well be this month.Akram has apparently been assured by the NSC that he will be elected unopposed as one of their designated directors on the board. In the 2008 elections, the number of NSC directors on the board was one, but it has not been made certain which constitution will be followed in the forthcoming election.”I will leave this position the day the election dates are announced,” Akram said. “If it happens to be before my term ends in September, I will let the board know. I am not interested in contesting elections in the present situation. I have been given an assurance. I may become a director through NSC’s quota.”I have already told the board regarding my desire to become a director, and I have done that before my tenured ended on June 30. I plan to make cricket better in the country, at all levels. I have a lot of plans about school cricket and age-group cricket. I have been a selector for six years, and I have worked with honesty and hard work.”

A bola ainda tocou a trave antes de encostrar as redes do time alvinegro.

Umpires have 'cracked under pressure' – Haddin

Brad Haddin believes the umpiring standard has been poor this Ashes, and would like DRS to be taken out of the players’ hands, and decided upon by the umpires

Brydon Coverdale19-Aug-2013

Brad Haddin is unimpressed with the standard of umpiring this Ashes•AFP

Australia’s vice-captain Brad Haddin has questioned the standard of umpiring throughout the Ashes series and believed that on-field officials were second-guessing themselves because of the presence of DRS. Haddin also reiterated the call he made after the first Test at Trent Bridge to have the review system taken out of the hands of the players and left at the sole discretion of the umpires.Haddin was clearly upset when he was given out lbw by umpire Tony Hill in Australia’s second innings in Chester-le-Street, where he tried to work a Stuart Broad delivery to leg. Haddin asked for a review and the umpire’s call stood after HawkEye suggested the ball would have just grazed the very top and edge of the leg bail. When asked what it was he had said to the umpire as he walked off, Haddin said he had muttered the words: “Not again”.Haddin was quick to point out the umpiring had not been the cause of Australia’s disappointing scoreline in the series and he commended England for having performed better, but he said that both teams would likely feel that the standard of officiating in the series had been below-par. Hill particularly was under the spotlight in the fourth Test, where he made a number of incorrect decisions, but all the officials have erred throughout the series.”I think England deserve to be in the position they are at 3-0. I think they’ve played the better cricket,” Haddin said. “But in all honesty, I think the standard of the umpiring in this series has been something that they could have a look at. I know players deal with pressure in different situations and some guys respond to it and some don’t. I think with the umpiring in this series, there have been times when they have cracked under the pressure of a campaign like [this].”I think DRS has put too much pressure on the umpires on the field. I think they’re second-guessing themselves with their decisions … I should’ve hit it [in Chester-le-Street]. But I think from both teams we’ve had some things that we’ve sat back and said ‘how can this be happening?’.”Teams haven’t always had to sit back and say it – they can do so out on the field while the replays are unfolding live on the big screen. After a review, the umpires and players typically stand around the pitch in their own little groups and watch the big-screen replay, which often brings plenty of jeering from the crowd if the umpire was shown to have made a mistake.”I do think it does place pressure on the umpires because the crowd react,” Haddin said of the replays. “If it’s a home crowd here they’re always going to lean towards England. I do think DRS has put a lot of pressure on the umpires on the field. I’ve gone on record before saying it should be taken out of the players’ hands and let the umpires deal with it. If they think it needs to go upstairs, let them go upstairs.”There are also questions over whether umpires would make the same decisions for the same deliveries, depending on whether a team still holds reviews or not. If, for example, an Australian bowler appeals with no reviews left, and the England batsmen still have reviews available, an umpire might feel more inclined to give a line-ball decision out because England have the option of challenging, whereas Australia do not.”I think the umpires are aware where DRS is at, who’s got one left or who’s got none left, and I think it can influence their decision,” Haddin said. “I think it needs to be taken out of the players’ hands, and let the umpires have total control. The bottom line is you just want to have more decisions right than not. You don’t want to be talking about DRS or umpire decisions in such a big series.”The fifth Test at The Oval begins on Wednesday with Aleem Dar and Kumar Dharmasena standing as the on-field officials and Hill as the TV umpire. Together with Marais Eramsus, they are the only four members of the ICC’s Elite Panel of umpires who are able to stand in an Ashes series, as the remaining eight men on the panel are either from England or Australia.

Opinião: 'Cadê a tradição São Paulo e Botafogo'?

MatériaMais Notícias

“Salve o tricolor paulista / Amado clube brasileiro
/ Tu és forte, tu és grande / Dentre os grandes és
o primeiro!”. Não tenho dúvidas de que é
amado.

Alex Hales hit a match-winning 74 as Nottinghamshire beat Kent by five wickets at Canterbury to top Group A and earn themselves a Yorkshire Bank 40 home semi-final.Hales and Samit Patel, who scored 59, put together the decisive partnership of 107 in 22 overs as the visitors overhauled Kent’s 40-over total of 195 for 6 with 10 balls to spare.Michael Lumb also helped to give the Nottinghamshire reply a confident start with 28 from 23 balls before being stumped off a legside wide from Mark Davies in the seventh over, with the total on 42.James Taylor could make only 6 in a scratchy 18-ball stay before being caught at the wicket off the accurate Davies, who bowled his eight new-ball overs straight through for figures of 2 for 33.But Hales and Patel, who came together at 57 for 2, were more than equal to the task of guiding Nottinghamshire to the victory which gives them the chance of silverware at the end of an often frustrating season.Hales included only three fours in a 55-ball half-century but kept the scoreboard ticking despite a sluggish surface which made expansive strokeplay difficult, and Patel also worked the ball around expertly to reach his own fifty from 60 balls to negate the efforts of a Kent attack in which James Tredwell did his best in a losing cause with an eight-over stint of one for 31.Patel fell in the 33rd over, clubbing Tredwell to long on after a 70-ball innings which included four fours and a driven six off Adam Riley, while a fine throw from deep square leg by Adam Ball finally sent back Hales in the 36th over, the England Twenty20 batsman run out after facing 90 balls and hitting four fours.Riki Wessels lofted Darren Stevens to deep mid-wicket on nine but David Hussey finished the match in style by straight-driving Ball for six to end on 19 not out.Sam Northeast, driving loosely on two, edged Harry Gurney to second slip in the second over of Kent’s innings but the home side, who won the toss, were steadied by Rob Key and Brendan Nash in a partnership of 76 in 18 overs.Key’s 62-ball 41 ended when he was beaten by a ball from part-time offspinner Hussey that moved the other way up the Canterbury slope to take the edge of his defensive bat on its way into wicketkeeper Chris Read’s gloves.Nash made 47 off 66 balls before skying an attempted pull at Jake Ball to mid-on and Stevens’ bright 27 from 32 balls came to a disappointing end for the predominantly Kent-supporting 4,500 crowd when he holed out to Steven Mullaney at long-off trying to hit Patel’s left-arm spin for six.Kent stumbled to 135 for 5 when Geraint Jones was hit on the boot by a full delivery from Patel and leg-before for one, and with Mullaney conceding just 25 runs from his eight overs, but youngsters Fabian Cowdrey and Ball hit out defiantly in a stand of 39 in five overs to boost the home total.Ball had just reached 22 with successive fours off Ajmal Shahzad, over extra cover and swung to mid-wicket, when he skied to wide mid-off, but Cowdrey produced some more inventive strokes to finish on an unbeaten 39 off 48 balls.
