ScorecardEast Zone held their nerve in the chase to beat West Zone by five wickets in Valsad. This is only the third time West have lost to East in the Duleep Trophy. West had already conceded the first-innings lead and had begun the final day with only five wickets remaining in the second innings. Mumbai’s Abhishek Nayar and Kaustubh Pawar were their last hope of saving the game but when Pawar went caught behind to Ashok Dinda on 37, West’s lower order crumbled. They lost five wickets for 21 runs to be bowled out for 201, Nayar being the last man to be dismissed for 58. Dinda and Abu Nechim ended with three strikes each for East. The visitors made a strong start to the chase of 173 with Dheeraj Jadhav and Manish Vardhan putting on 52 upfront. However, Maharashtra’s Akshay Darekar, who bowled 23 of the 56.3 overs in East’s second innings, kept striking from one end to leave them in some trouble at 121 for 5 at one stage. Biplab Samantray and Anustup Majumdar, who had helped East take the first-innings lead with an unbeaten century, ensured there were no further worries for their side as they knocked off the remaining 52 runs. Darekar finished with 5 for 87.East will now take on North Zone in the second semi-final in Delhi from February 7 while Central Zone will meet South Zone in the first in Chennai.

Canada bounce back with win over PNG

A round-up of matches on the second day of the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifiers

Group ACanada notched their first win of the qualifiers by holding on to beat Papua New Guinea by six runs at the ICC Global Cricket Academy in Dubai. Canada raced away to 38 from the first 3.3 overs, but were slowly pegged back by some economical bowling from Mahuru Dai and Hitolo Areni, who both finished with 1 for 27 from their four overs. Nitish Kumar anchored Canada’s innings with 57 from 44 balls while Hiral Patel chipped in with 34. PNG got off to a steady start in their chase, led by opener Asad Vala, who made 52. But they allowed the asking rate to climb too far and left their final assault a little too late. Despite 50 runs from the last five overs, they fell agonisingly short.Blistering half-centuries from Jamie Atkinson and Irfan Ahmed propelled Hong Kong to an eight-wicket win over Bermuda, their first of the tournament, at the ICC Global Cricket Academy in Dubai. Chasing 162, the pair savaged Bermuda’s attack, adding 113 together from just 12 overs after the loss of opener Babar Hayat for 6 in the first over. Ahmed perished on 50 to the medium pace of Janeiro Tucker, but Atkinson made sure there would be no last-minute stumble, finishing the match in style with a six of Kamau Leverock. So savage was their assault, that four of the six bowlers Bermuda used had economy-rates in the double-digits. In all, Atkinson’s 87 took just 55 balls and contained 13 fours and two sixes. Bermuda posted 161 for 5 on the back of a run-a-ball 43 from captain David Hemp and a late assault from Leverock (18*) and Tucker (31 from 19) that saw 73 runs come off the last six overs.Afghanistan scrambled home with two-balls to spare to beat Netherlands by four wickets. The Dutch posted 159 courtesy of Alexei Kervezee’s 58 from 43-balls. Michael Swart also made 22 from 16-balls opening the batting. Afghanistan’s chase was led by a partnership of 58 between Nawroz Mangal, who made a 19-ball 26 and Mohammad Shahzad: his 54 with eight fours seeing his side home, despite 2 for 12 from Mudassar Bukhari. Nine were needed from the final over but two fours from the bat of Noor Ali Zadran saw Afghanistan over the line.Shakti Gauchan took 4 for 20, including a hat-trick, as Nepal produced their second win in two matches after bowling Denmark out for 82. Denmark has been 58 for 2 but their collapse left them with no chance as Pradeep Airee almost knocked off the target himself. He plundered seven fours and four sixes in making 65 from 43-balls as Nepal won by nine wickets with seven overs to spare, Airee finishing the game in fine style with a big six.Group BItaly made it two wins in two games as they stopped United States of America short by eight runs at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. USA’s chase of 138 suffered an early blow when their captain Sushil Nadkarni was caught behind off the first delivery of the innings bowled by Gareth Berg. Vince Pennazza tied USA down, giving only 11 runs off four overs and claiming two wickets. Damian Crowley chipped in with three strikes and despite an unbeaten 35 from Asif Khan, USA managed only 129 for 8. Carl Sandri had earlier smashed four sixes on his way to an unbeaten 49 off 28 deliveries to help Italy recover from 26 for 3 and post 137 for 6.Ireland responded to yesterday’s surprise defeat to Namibia with a comprehensive victory over Kenya. Chasing 129 Uganda took until the last over to reach their target with Arthur Ziraba making 26 from 25 balls. Hemal Mehta conceded 16 from his four overs but his tight spell wasn’t enough after Oman failed to capatalise on several of their batsman getting good starts. Zeeshan Siddiqui reached 30 from 15 balls but he was run out and nobody else could produce a meaningful contribution to guide the innings.Louis van der Westhuizen blasted a century as Namibia made it two wins out of two with a comfortable 49-run win over Scotland.

O time não vem rendendo o esperado.

O Timão retorna a São Paulo nesta quinta-feira.

Lyon to play, Australia drop Forrest

ESPNcricinfo’s preview of the third ODI between West Indies and Australia in St Vincent

The Preview by Brydon Coverdale20-Mar-2012Match factsSunil Narine has been a tricky customer for Australia to handle in the first two games•Associated Press

March 20, Arnos Vale
Start time 0930 (1330 GMT)Big PictureIf there were any doubts about how much Sunday’s win meant to West Indies, who had not beaten Australia in an ODI since 2006, consider the reaction of the prime minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines. Ralph Gonsalves, who has been in the crowd during the first two games, declared Tuesday a public holiday and as a result, the third match had already sold out by Monday. If West Indies can parlay that support into another victory, they will have a 2-1 series lead ahead of the final two games in St Lucia, and will have a terrific chance to beat Australia in a one-day series for the first time since 1995.To avoid that scenario, Australia need more from their batsmen, especially given they have weakened their batting depth by leaving Peter Forrest out to accommodate the offspinner Nathan Lyon. In the first two matches they had nine scores above 20 but no batsman has managed a half-century. That is not easy on a slow pitch, but they must find a way, especially if they have their full allotment of overs to bat. They scored at less than four an over in the second match and only marginally above that in the first game, and finding a way to handle the spin of Sunil Narine will be one of their major challenges.West Indies have also been bereft of half-century makers in this series but Kieron Pollard was well on the way to one when the winning runs arrived on Sunday. Their batsmen played poorly in the first match and the task is to make sure Sunday’s efforts are repeated in this game, not the batting from the opening encounter.Form guide(Most recent first)
West Indies WLLLW
Australia LWWLWIn the spotlightSunil Narine’s 4 for 27 on Sunday was the second-best analysis ever recorded by a West Indies spinner in an ODI against Australia. Only Chris Gayle has bettered those figures, when he took 5 for 46 in Antigua in 2003. Narine’s changes of pace and flight, and the variety of spin in his armoury make him a difficult proposition in one-day cricket. Further success in this series will also boost his chances of a call-up for the Test matches that follow.Clint McKay doesn’t draw the headlines like some of his team-mates but he has made himself an important part of Australia’s one-day side, filling a Nathan Bracken-style role. His changes of pace are challenging in the 50-over format and his variety and accuracy makes him well suited to the slower Arnos Vale pitch. Almost inconspicuously, McKay has put himself in a position to reach 50 ODI wickets quicker than most Australians. He has 47, and is about to play his 26th ODI. Dennis Lillee reached the mark in 24 matches and Shane Warne in 25, and should McKay get there this game he will be equal third-fastest with Len Pascoe, who took 26 games.Team newsWest Indies will be reluctant to alter a winning side, with changes more likely ahead of the fourth and fifth matches when the teams move on to a new venue.West Indies (possible) 1 Kieran Powell, 2 Johnson Charles, 3 Marlon Samuels, 4 Darren Bravo, 5 Dwayne Bravo, 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Andre Russell, 8 Carlton Baugh (wk), 9 Darren Sammy (capt), 10 Sunil Narine, 11 Kemar Roach.Australia have announced their side and there will be one change, the inclusion of the offspinner Lyon at the expense of the batsman Forrest. Lyon should enjoy working on the slow Arnos Vale pitch, where Sunil Narine was so difficult for the Australians to handle in the second match.Australia 1 David Warner, 2 Shane Watson (capt), 3 Matthew Wade (wk), 4 Michael Hussey, 5 David Hussey, 6 George Bailey, 7 Daniel Christian, 8 Brett Lee, 9 Clint McKay, 10 Xavier Doherty, 11 Nathan Lyon.Pitch and conditionsThe slow Arnos Value surface has proved difficult for batsmen over the past two matches and the same is expected in this third game. Thunderstorms have been forecast, so the sides might face another abridged contest.Stats and trivia Sunday’s victory was the first time West Indies had beaten Australia in an ODI in 14 matches, stretching back to the 2006 Champions Trophy Excluding matches where they have been bowled out, Australia’s run-rate of 3.85 on Sunday was their lowest in an ODI in four yearsQuotes”We have shown that we can win and now the aim is to repeat the performance.”
“The conditions make it a little bit more difficult [for batsmen]. You’re definitely never in.”

Surrey fail to pull off historic win

Worcestershire’s ninth-wicket pair of Matt Pardoe and Richard Jones hung on to secure a draw as Surrey dominated after following on

There were plenty of reasons for Worcestershire supporters to be optimistic as they made their way to New Road for the final day of their match against Surrey: their team was a couple of wickets away from dominating the game; people could sport sun-hats without being asked which fancy dress party they were attending later; and no rain was forecast.Well, the weather continued to behave itself but nearly everything else went pear-shaped for Daryl Mitchell’s men on this balmy Saturday. Surrey completely outplayed them, adding 215 more runs in 42 overs and then reducing the home side to 135 for 8 before Richard Jones and the admirable Matt Pardoe survived the final 45 balls to secure a draw. Pardoe, who also plays for Kidderminster Victoria in the Birmingham League, ended the match on 38 not out by displaying an exemplary defensive technique and a passion for crease occupation that some of his colleagues would do well to copy. For their part, Rory Hamilton-Brown’s players could be justifiably delighted with the way they had responded to conceding a 172-run first innings lead and then being reduced to 125 for 4, still 47 in arrears, on Friday evening. Had they won, it would have been only the second occasion since 1868 that they had done so after following on. And no one had greater reason to be thoroughly chuffed than Championship debutant George Edwards, whose two early wickets ended Worcestershire’s interest in scoring 260 runs in 52 overs to win the game. He then returned to get rid of Ben Scott and Aneesh Kapil as a few Worcestershire batsmen lost either the will or the technique to resist. Scott seemed to abandon both.Edwards, a strong-looking seamer who plays for Spencer CC in the Surrey Championship, was only in the side because Stuart Meaker and Jade Dernbach are on England Lions duty. All the same, the 19-year-old’s extra bounce and pace forced Michael Klinger to fend the ball to sub fielder Chris Jordan in the gully, and he then trapped Vikram Solanki lbw for nought with a superb yorker which speared the No. 3 painfully on the toes. When Mitchell was lbw on the front foot to Jon Lewis five deliveries later Worcestershire had lost three wickets in eleven balls and talk of a home victory was confined to supporters who had spent too long in the sun.Surrey dominated the first half of the day too, especially the morning session, in which they scored 166 runs in 32 overs. After a 20-minute period in which Hamilton-Brown and Maynard were content to push singles, a tuning-up exercise they completed with ominous ease, the Surrey pair treated Mitchell’s attack with disdain, pummelling a succession of boundaries and adding 90 runs in the first hour.Maynard was initially the more destructive, straight driving Jones for two thunderous boundaries and becoming the first Surrey batsman to reach a Championship century this season when he hit Kapil for six over long-on. Hamilton-Brown emulated his partner’s aggressive approach in the second hour of the morning and reached three figures – and his first ever hundred in the second innings of a first-class match – when he ran Kapil down to third man for four. Worcestershire supporters who had arrived with high hopes of seeing their side record their first Championship victory of the season were instead offered a glimpse of what life may be like if Alan Richardson’s shoulder injury proves to be serious. It was not a congenial sight for them. One wicket did fall in the session but Hamilton-Brown’s departure for 115 amounted to little more than acceptable collateral damage for Surrey. The captain’s 225-run partnership with Maynard had broken the Surrey record for the fifth wicket against Worcestershire and it also looked to have broken the home players’ spirit as fielding errors crept in. At lunch Surrey were 382 for 5 and the locals’ cheery talk of early finishes had been replaced by gloomy discussions of declaration times and possible collapses. It had been savage stuff.Surrey added 49 runs in even time after lunch before Hamilton-Brown called off the dogs. Maynard reached his highest first-class score in the first over after the interval but was caught at point by Solanki off Lucas for 143 immediately afterwards. Zander de Bruyn also perished in the quest for quick runs, though it scarcely mattered. Jones finished with match figures of 8 for 171 and he probably has fond recollections of Friday. Worcestershire’s supporters will empathise.
