Contented Strauss looks ahead to India

In the bigger picture England captain Andrew Strauss had plenty reasons to be content after securing a 1-0 win over Sri Lanka ahead of India’s visit

Andrew Miller at the Rose Bowl20-Jun-2011Andrew Strauss had plenty to be frustrated about as England’s Test series against Sri Lanka dribbled to a damp conclusion at the Rose Bowl on Monday. He was frustrated by the weather that closed in once again at tea; he was frustrated by his own dropped catch off Rangana Herath in the morning session that might have prised an opportunity for England to press for victory. And he was frustrated by his personal return of 27 runs in four innings, which now means he’ll be playing for Somerset against the Indian tourists next month, in a bid to find form before the first Test at Lord’s.In the bigger picture, however, Strauss had plenty more reasons to be content. Thanks to Sri Lanka’s extraordinary collapse in the first Test at Cardiff, his team did at least emerge with the series win that their dominance undoubtedly deserved, while his own struggles against the left-arm seam of Chanaka Welegedara were counterbalanced by the composed form of pretty much every other member of his team. With the world’s No. 1 Test side waiting in the wings, England look ready for a battle royale.”We’re looking forward to the challenge of taking on India, and hope we can be a difficult proposition for them,” he said. “I think we’re in good shape. A lot of the batsmen got a lot of runs in this series and are in good form; our bowling attack in this game was exceptional and at times at Cardiff was very good as well. We’re a confident team, and we’re used to winning and putting opposition teams under pressure – which we did against Sri Lanka.”I think it’s going to be a pretty significant series,” he added. “We know India are a very confident side in their own right and are used to winning themselves. We’ve got our home conditions, and we back ourselves to beat anyone in them, but it’s going to be a tough series and will hinge on those important moments and sessions – and we’ve got to make sure we’re able to grasp them.”Stuart Broad was hindered by a bruised heel, but appeared to be working his way back to rhythm•AFP

With that in mind, Strauss’s post-match focus was on the fine-tuning that went awry on the final day at the Rose Bowl, as a team that had been under the cosh since the first innings found enough resilence, through Kumar Sangakkara and Thilan Samaraweera, to bat through to the draw. “We just couldn’t create chances,” he said. “We had that one chance against Herath that was put down, and that might have made a slight difference. But they’re a good batting side. The wicket was a bit more placid today and two good players got stuck in.”Had the match not lost 184 overs to rain, Sri Lanka would have struggled to build enough of a lead to stave off defeat, especially with England’s batting looking at its most formidable for a generation. But looking ahead to the visit of India, it is the performance of England’s bowlers that was the biggest plus to come out of this series. Though they struggled with their lines at Lord’s and lacked penetration today, the variety and threat posed by each different member bodes well for the visit of one of the most feared batting units in the world.Chris Tremlett was named Man of the Series for his 15 wickets at 23.40, including a career-best haul of 6 for 48 in the first innings at the Rose Bowl, and Strauss believed he complemented the attack perfectly. “He did an outstanding job here. This wicket is in some ways tailor-made for him, with the extra carry and bounce, but he made good batsmen look under pressure – and that’s a great testament to his aggression and bounce and awkward lift and swing.”He’s certainly added a different dimension to our bowling line-up since he came into the team, and he’s very much at the peak of his powers at the moment. I’m sure batsmen later on in the summer will struggle against him as well. This is one of those series that never really got going, but we’re very happy to have won it and move on still in a jubilant mood.”Aside from Strauss, England’s other form concern was Stuart Broad, whose effectiveness was further hampered on the final day by a bruised heel. Nevertheless, after being stripped of the new ball to make way for Tremlett, he turned in an aggressive performance on the fourth evening that led to the wicket of Mahela Jayawardene, and Strauss was happy to believe he was coming back to his best.”What he did really well was he just banged out a length consistently, and created scoreboard pressure as well as bowling some really good deliveries,” said Strauss. “It just looked like he was in better rhythm, getting it through with good pace and bounce – and I’m sure he will have taken some heart from that spell.”

Lyon the bolter in Australia's Test squad

The offspinner Nathan Lyon is the bolter in Australia’s 15-man squad for the Test series in Sri Lanka, which also includes the incumbent spinner Michael Beer. The pair will fight for the slow-bowling position for the first Test in Galle, after the selectors sprung another surprise by omitting the allrounder Steven Smith. The uncapped fast bowlers, Trent Copeland and James Pattinson, also made the cut, while Ben Hilfenhaus missed out following a disappointing Ashes campaign. As expected, Ryan Harris was named after recovering from injury, and he looms as a key part of a pace attack whose most experienced members are Mitchell Johnson and Peter Siddle. The selectors found room for both Shaun Marsh and Usman Khawaja, who are likely to battle for the No. 6 position. However, the major surprise came in the spin department, where Jason Krejza’s poor Australia A tour to Zimbabwe cost him a certain call-up, and resulted in the selectors naming two men without Cricket Australia contracts.Beer played the final Ashes Test in Sydney and although he only took one wicket, the selectors were encouraged by the way he bowled. The more remarkable selection was that of the South Australian Lyon, 23, who has played only four first-class matches and was not part of Australia A’s four-day squad in Zimbabwe.”Michael Beer retains his position in the squad following his debut in Sydney during the fifth Ashes Test where he bowled well, without much luck,” the chairman of selectors, Andrew Hilditch, said. “It will be an important tour for Michael on grounds where we expect spin to play a major role.”The squad also sees the inclusion of Nathan Lyon, a talented young spinner who impressed all last season and bowled extremely well on Australia A’s tour of Zimbabwe. Nathan may be a surprise selection, but he impressed all who have seen him in the last year and bowled beautifully during the one-day component of the A squad’s recent tour where he was named player of the series.”He is a young man with immense potential and we feel he will take this opportunity should he get the chance to play in Sri Lanka. Steven Smith is unlucky to have missed selection in this squad. We continue to see him as player of the future for Australia in all forms of the game but at this stage we do not feel he has cemented his position as a batsman in the top six or as a legspin bowler.”We feel he needs to continue to develop as a genuine allrounder in the shorter forms of the game and play more long-form cricket for New South Wales to push again for Test selection.Hilditch also said Krejza, who was preferred to Beer for a central contract this year, had fallen out of contention due to his poor results in Zimbabwe. He took six wickets at 41.33 in the two first-class games in Zimbabwe but struggled severely during a two-day tour match in which he took 0 for 96 from 19 overs, while Beer grabbed a six-wicket haul.”The intention of the national selection panel was to take Jason Krejza to Sri Lanka provided he proved he was bowling at his best,” Hilditch said. “He has had very limited opportunities in Sheffield Shield cricket so the Zimbabwe tour was very important for him. Unfortunately Jason did not bowl as well as we, or I am sure he, would have liked during this tour and therefore he has not been rewarded with selection.”There is also inexperience in the pace group, although Johnson, Siddle and Harris are the front-runners to play in the first Test. But they will feel the pressure from Copeland, 25, who has been an outstanding performer for New South Wales since his first-class debut early last year, and the 21-year old Pattinson from Victoria.”Trent has earned his position with some fine performances for New South Wales and has bowled very well on the Australia A tour,” Hilditch said. “James is a young fast bowler with the potential to play an important role for Australia in all three forms of the game and we look forward to watching his further development during this tour.”Ben Hilfenhaus did not have as good an Ashes series as he would have liked and we feel he needs to get back to his best, swinging the ball late and hitting the bat hard. We are sure he will do this and he will be very much in contention for selection on the upcoming tour to South Africa. Doug Bollinger has been left out of the Test squad. The NSP feels he needs to improve his ability to bowl spells at full intensity and maintain it over the course of a match, particularly in these days of back-to-back Tests.”The batting was a little more clear cut, given the axing of Simon Katich from the contract list. Phillip Hughes will open with Shane Watson and the Western Australia batsman Shaun Marsh will push for his first baggy green.”Shaun Marsh comes into the Australian Test squad and has been in our minds for some time as a player who could have a real impact at international level in all forms of the game,” Hilditch said. “Injury impacted at critical times last year however he has worked hard and is in our view ready to seize this opportunity.”Test squad: Shane Watson, Phillip Hughes, Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke (capt), Michael Hussey, Usman Khawaja, Shaun Marsh, Brad Haddin (wk), Mitchell Johnson, Ryan Harris, Peter Siddle, Trent Copeland, James Pattinson, Nathan Lyon, Michael Beer

Briggs bowls Hampshire to Finals Day

A five-wicket haul by left-arm spinner Danny Briggs set up a crushing 55-run win for Hampshire over Durham at the Rose Bowl

Hampshire are a step closer to getting the chance to defend their Twenty20 crown after a five-wicket haul by left-arm spinner Danny Briggs set up a crushing 55-run win over Durham at the Rose Bowl.Neil McKenzie’s accomplished fifty had carried Hampshire to a competitive 154 for 6, after which Hampshire’s stable of spinners took full advantage of the helpful conditions to scupper Durham’s chase. The slow men bowled 11.3 overs for just 50 runs in total, with Briggs ripping the heart out of the middle order to finish with 5 for 19 and the Man of the Match award. While Hampshire’s preparation of a pitch to suit their strengths in the bowling department is sure to spark some debate, there was some absorbing cricket on display as ball dominated bat. Hampshire were grateful for a 66-run fourth wicket stand between McKenzie and Sean Ervine, as the eventual first-innings total gave the home side’s spinners vital breathing space and heaped on the scoreboard pressure to induce false strokes from Durham’s batsmen on a turning track.Briggs had played a vital role in Hampshire’s triumph in this competition last season with a club record of 31 wickets, including a Man of the Match performance in the semi final, and is Hampshire’s leading wicket-taker this time round too, with 22 scalps at 14.95 so far. Hampshire captain Dominic Cork also had Imran Tahir and Shahid Afridi’s appreciable talents to turn to, but it was seam rather than spin that he opted to open Hampshire’s defence with. Both Dimitri Mascarenhas and Cork, who turned 40 today and has also been dealing with his father’s illness in recent weeks, managed to keep things reasonably tight, but the match really began to turn when Briggs was brought on in the fifth over, with the field restrictions in place, and immediately struck to remove Mustard.Overseas signing David Miller was the next to go, deceived by dip through the air and zip off the surface to be bowled for 10, and in the very same over Briggs rushed one straight on past Ben Stokes’ thrusting sweep to have him stumped for 28 by wicketkeeper Michael Bates, who had a flawless day behind the stumps. With Durham shorn of the services of the injured Paul Collingwood, Stokes was the only batsman to find any fluency in the conditions, and once he was gone the strangulation began in earnest.Ian Blackwell was completely deceived by a Tahir googly, while Briggs had Dale Benkenstein and Liam Plunkett caught in the deep for his fourth and fifth wickets as Durham slipped to 95 for 8. Once they’d completed their overs, Afridi was brought on and swiftly applied the coup de grace with the wickets of Mitchell Claydon and Scott Borthwick with consecutive deliveries.Durham’s chase ultimately ended with a whimper, but they had been far more competitive in the field, and made a superb start when the potentially-destructive Afridi was run out without facing a ball in the first over. James Vince struggled to get going, and Durham continued to show superb energy in the field as Jimmy Adams was run out to reduce the hosts to 37 for 3.Ervine and McKenzie started slowly but the innings soon began to regain momentum, and they had reached a far more healthy 78 for 3 at the halfway mark. Durham’s spinners – Borthwick, Blackwell and Breese – found plenty of fizz off the surface and Blackwell caused particular problems for McKenzie, who played and missed on several occasions. An intense contest unfolded, McKenzie hitting back with consecutive sixes with a slog sweep and a twinkle-toed loft over cover off Blackwell despite the conditions. A firm platform had been laid but the partnership was then broken in farcical fashion, both batsmen stranded mid-pitch after some very confused calling and Ervine run out for a 30-ball 35.McKenzie remained, however, and marshalled his team past 150, bringing up a 40-ball half-century along the way. That was always going to be a very stiff target for Durham to chase, but once Briggs got going they never had a chance.

Warwickshire in control despite Sayers

Stand-in captain Joe Sayers did his best to make up for the absence of Jacques Rudolph but familiar batting frailties left Yorkshire struggling on 254 for 8

31-Aug-2011
Scorecard
Stand-in captain Joe Sayers did his best to make up for the absence of Jacques Rudolph but familiar batting frailties left Yorkshire struggling on 254 for 8 against County Championship title hopefuls Warwickshire at Edgbaston.Rudolph’s departure to South Africa for a training camp meant Sayers captained the county for the first time in the championship and Adam Lyth earned a recall after a six-week break. Together they held off Warwickshire for almost half the day, putting on 134 in 45 overs after Sayers had lost the toss, but from 181 for 1 they lost 7 for 72 to leave their slender hopes of retaining top-flight status looking ever more tenuous. If the home side expected a repeat of their crushing win when the two counties met at Headingley last week, they were to be disappointed. Indeed, title rivals Lancashire batted first at nearby Worcester and still beat them to a bowling bonus point by mid-afternoon. At that stage Warwickshire had taken only one wicket – Rikki Clarke bowling Joe Root for 18 – as their seamers laboured to get anything out of a sluggish pitch. There was a hint of swing and the occasional edgy shot, but in the main it was plain hard work as Yorkshire’s batsmen addressed some of the issues raised by last week’s defeat by an innings and 58 runs. Martyn Moxon, the director of cricket, said it was “embarrassing” and Andrew Gale, the injured captain, used Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s knock of 193 for Warwickshire as an example of the ruthless streak that had been missing from Yorkshire’s batting. The response to criticism was promising but too much ground was conceded as Warwickshire fought back with left-arm spinner Chris Metters claiming the two top scorers in a spell of three for 45. Sayers, having worn down the seamers, went for 84, edging to the keeper as he pushed forward to Metters. For the most part, the disciplined left-hander thrived on his new responsibility in making his fifth half-century since missing the second half of last season because of post-viral fatigue syndrome. His innings, spanning nearly four hours and containing 13 fours, lit a beacon for his side until Warwickshire discovered the resolve of potential champions through the seam-and-spin combination of Chris Wright and Metters. They removed Anthony McGrath and Jonathan Bairstow with catches at second slip by Clarke – and Metters secured the bigger prize when Lyth, having made 74 from 178 balls, was trapped on the crease, playing back. The slump continued with the new ball. Keith Barker and Chris Woakes each took a wicket but Ajmal Shahzad eked out a second batting point with Ryan Sidebottom before he edged Clarke to second slip.
