Firpo ruled out of Everton-Leeds clash

Phil Hay dropped some fresh Leeds United injury news on Friday, confirming left-back Junior Firpo will miss the Premier League clash with Everton.

The Lowdown: Firpo struggling

The Whites signed Firpo from Barcelona last summer but his first season at Elland Road has been a little hit-and-miss to date, with injuries certainly not helping.

The 25-year-old hasn’t featured since the 3-2 win away to West Ham on January 16th, as he has struggled to overcome a leg problem suffered during the first half of that game.

Leeds head to Everton on Saturday afternoon in another big game at the bottom and would have been hoping to get Firpo back given he was spotted running at Elland Road this week, but a fresh update has been provided and it’s not the news fans wanted.

The Latest: Left-back misses out again

Taking to Twitter, Hay confirmed that the left-back would not feature at Goodison Park, as he remains sidelined along with Liam Cooper, Kalvin Phillips and Patrick Bamford:

“Marcelo Bielsa talking this morning ahead of Everton v Leeds – he’s not going to risk Firpo tomorrow but Firpo will be back next week. On the absentee list for Goodison Park with Phillips, Cooper and Bamford.”

The Verdict: Dallas in defence?

Firpo’s absence means that Stuart Dallas should again slot in at left-back, as was the case at Aston Villa on Wednesday night when he earned a 6.3 rating from WhoScored.

The North Irishman’s versatility is priceless at times like these and he could be tasked with keeping Andros Townsend quiet, should the Everton man start on the right-hand side.

It is another huge game for Leeds, as they look to pull seven points clear of the Blues, but Frank Lampard will know that a win for his side will put them within one point of Marcelo Bielsa’s men – you’d be hard pushed to find someone who predicted these two playing out a a six-pointer at the beginning of the campaign.

No entanto, ele utiliza a academia do clube.

Rampaul looks forward to first home Test

In the absence of the injured Jerome Taylor, and with Kemar Roach struggling to shake off an ankle problem, Ravi Rampaul has become the likely spearhead for West Indies’ pace attack

Ravi Rampaul aims to translate his one-day form to the Tests as well•West Indies Cricket Board

In the absence of the injured Jerome Taylor, and with Kemar Roach struggling to shake off an ankle problem, Ravi Rampaul has become the likely spearhead for West Indies’ pace attack in the first Test against South Africa. Rampaul made his international debut seven years ago but has played in only three Tests so far, and was looking forward to his first Test in the West Indies, more so since it was at his home ground, Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad.”Playing a Test match in front the home crowd and knowing that my family will be right here…it is a very special feeling for me,” he said, “I hope the crowd comes out to give me support and push me in the Test match.”West Indies are winless in the series so far, having lost both Twenty20s and being blanked 5-0 in the one-dayers by Graeme Smith’s side. Rampaul, however, sought inspiration from West Indies’ recent home Test record – including a series victory over England last year and a hard-fought series against Australia in 2008. “Our home record in Tests is good so far and the team is really pumped up for this Test series.”The coach Ottis Gibson also struck a similarly positive note. “We want to come out and show that we are progressing, we are learning and some of the senior guys that did not perform in the one-day series will want to come out and make amends,” Gibson said, referring to the lacklustre performance of the side’s most experienced batsmen, Chris Gayle and Shivnarine Chanderpaul. The Test team wears a different look to the one that competed in the limited-overs leg with the likes of Brendan Nash, Shane Shillingford and Nelon Pascal joining the squad. “We have a few new faces in the squad and we will obviously try to move on from the one-day series as quickly as possible,” Gibson said. “And even though we lost that series the mood has always been that we are building towards something and the mood in the camp is pretty good so far.”

Cristian Romero excels on Spurs return

Tottenham Hotspur advanced into the fifth round of the FA Cup with a convincing win at home over Premier League rivals Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday evening.

Harry Kane scored twice – either side of a Solly March own goal – to see Spurs into the next round despite the Seagulls threatening a late comeback after Yves Bissouma bagged a consolation.

It was the England international’s night, that’s for sure. He curled in a beautiful goal for his opener whilst he completed his brace with an effort on the other end of the spectrum as he poked home a goalmouth scramble after a great solo run from Heung-min Son.

However, for all of the 28-year-old’s efforts, he wasn’t the only man to impress.

On his return from injury, Argentina centre-back Cristian Romero looked like an absolute Rolls-Royce of a defender in the 77 minutes he was on the pitch.

Antonio Conte was forced to withdraw early with cramp but the 23-year-old, who is on loan from Serie A side Atalanta, was playing his first game – and only third under the Italian – since November.

Not only did SofaScore rank him as the second-highest rated player for Spurs but the local press wrote glowingly of his display.

‘A dominant and eye-catching return to the side in the heart of the three. Composed on the ball, aggressive without it,’ said Dan Kilpatrick of the Evening Standard, whilst The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare dubbed his performance “very impressive” on social media.

Indeed, Romero was an absolute rock at the back, thwarting Graham Potter’s side every time they went forward, leaving Neal Maupay left frustrated in the attack.

As per FotMob, the Argentine led the match for tackles (four), recoveries (nine) and clearances (five). He also won 71% of his seven duels and was sublime on the ball, registering a pass success rate of 97% – which was even better than Conte’s engine room duo of Harry Winks (86%) and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (89%).

This suggests that he was a very hard man to get past and that he remained calm and composed throughout – as if he hadn’t just missed nearly three months of the season with a “serious” injury.

It’s also no wonder that his teammate at both I Nerazzurri and in north London, goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini, dubbed him an “animal” who is “perfect” for the English game.

The £31.5m-rated star was arguably the man who stole the show against Brighton this weekend. Kane will understandably take the headlines but the 23-year-old’s display cannot go unnoticed, especially considering the circumstances building up to this moment.

Spurs will be hoping that he can remain fit for the remainder of the season as glory in the FA Cup and a place in the top four still remain on offer.

Azhar Ali hopeful of Lord's debut

Azhar Ali: “I am confident that I can provide a degree of calmness and assurance at the top of the order”•AFP

Azhar Ali, one of the rookie Pakistan batsmen selected for the tour of England, is hoping to make his Test debut at Lord’s where they face Australia in the first of two Tests starting July 13. The right-handed batsman from Lahore was in the reserves for the Asia Cup and this is his first tour with the senior team.Azhar is among three new faces in the Test squad and if picked for the first Test, he could be the first Pakistan batsman to debut at Lord’s after Shadab Kabir in 1996.”I have always dreamt of making my debut for Pakistan at Lord’s and as luck would have it, our opening Test is at Lord’s,” Azhar told . “I really hope that I am given the opportunity to debut at Lord’s, as it’s a ground steeped in tradition and history.”Azhar, 25, believes his patience and willingness to occupy the crease for long periods will help his cause.”I like to play long innings and have no problems in being patient at the crease,” Azhar said. “I know the opposition will be tough in England, but I am confident that I can provide Pakistan with stability and a degree of calmness and assurance at the top of the order. I have experience of conditions in England having played league cricket over here, so hopefully I can use that experience to my advantage”.Azhar added that he got useful advice on batting from former captain Javed Miandad during a camp last month. “Javed was watching the batsmen at the emerging players camp and he came over and talked to me about the importance of crease occupation, not letting the opposition bowlers force you out of your comfort zone and playing each delivery on merit,” Azhar said. “I think he liked what he saw in my batting and I will always be grateful for the advice he gave me”.Azhar was picked after scoring 445 runs in ten games with a personal best of 153 for Khan Research Laboratories in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.

West Ham plotting swoop for Adarabioyo

West Ham United are plotting a move to bring Tosin Adarabioyo to the London Stadium in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Claret & Hugh, with the West Ham insider revealing that David Moyes is likely to make a move for the Fulham centre-back at the end of the current campaign, with an offer somewhere in the region of £22m believed to be enough to get a deal over the line for the 24-year-old.

Regarding the Hammers’ interest in the former Manchester City defender, Claret & Hugh state: “West Ham boss David Moyes is likely to move for Fulham central defender Tosin Adarabioyo as he looks to reinforce the defence this summer. Adarabioyo has been on Moyes’ shortlist for several months and a bid of around £22m is likely to get him into the Hammers.”

Moyes can finally axe Diop with Adarabioyo

Considering West Ham’s rather desperate need of central defensive reinforcements, Angelo Ogbonna being ruled out for the remainder of the season with an ACL injury, Issa Diop having largely failed to impress while filling in for the Italian and Kurt Zouma’s future appearing uncertain following off-field issues, it is easy to see why Moyes is reported to be plotting a move for a new centre-back this summer – especially one as talented as Adarabioyo.

Indeed, over his 26 Championship appearances so far this season, the £13.5m-rated defender has been in imperious form for Marco Silva’s side, helping Fulham keep eight clean sheets, scoring two goals and providing one assist, as well as making an average of 1.5 interceptions, 1.1 tackles, 3.8 clearances and winning five duels – at a success rate of 70% – per game.

These returns have seen the player who Pep Guardiola dubbed an “exceptional” talent average a rather remarkable SofaScore match rating of 7.24, not only ranking the 24-year-old as the eighth-best player in the entire division but also as the best defender.

In comparison, over Diop’s nine Premier League outings in the current campaign, the £10.8m-rated centre-back has helped his side keep two clean sheets and provided his teammates with one assist, as well as making an average of 0.7 interceptions, one tackle, 3.6 clearances and winning 2.8 duels – at a success rate of 53% – per fixture.

These returns have seen the 25-year-old who Toby Cudworth labelled a “frightening” player average an extremely disappointing SofaScore match rating of just 6.68, ranking him as Moyes’ seventh-worst performer in the league.

As such, while it is true that Diop turned in an admirable display in the 2-2 draw with Leicester City on Sunday, it would nevertheless appear an extremely wise move for the 58-year-old Hammers boss to finally cut his losses on the former France U21 international this summer, and subsequently reinvest the transfer fee received – as well as his £67k-per-week wages – for the defender into a move for Adarabioyo.
