O camisa 27 perdeu a cabeça, cuspiu no rosto deDámian Diaz e acabou expulso.

Rangers: McLeish outlines Gio’s priorities

An Ibrox insider has made a Rangers claim regarding manager Gio van Bronckhorst…

What’s the talk?

Former Gers boss Alex McLeish, who knows exactly what it is like to be inside the club, has claimed that the Dutchman’s priorities will be on getting results on the pitch. The Scot believes that the 46-year-old will wait to establish his playing style before delving into the academy and other areas of the side.

He told Football Insider:

“He’s just ticking the boxes at the moment for Rangers.

“Of course, he will say he’s not going to ignore the academy right now, but he’s not going be launching himself into a full-depth study of it.

“At the moment, his priority will be with that first team. The first thing he has to do is get that Rangers side winning again, get those good performance levels in the style he wants to play.

“Once he establishes that he then can ascertain these players’ strengths and weaknesses in the coming weeks.”

Delighted

Rangers fans will surely be delighted with these comments from McLeish, particularly as a man who knows what it takes to manage the club. He understands what makes the club tick as an insider and he appears to believe that van Bronckhorst will make good decisions and focus on the right areas in his first few weeks in the job.

Supporters, first and foremost, will surely want to see results on the pitch and McLeish believes that the Dutchman will focus on that initially. The ex-Feyenoord man may want to nail down his principles and style of play to ensure that the results are ticking over and Rangers continue on their way to a second successive Premiership title, before then focusing on other aspects of the role.

He still has just over a month until the start of the January transfer window and may not need to focus on incoming or outgoing transfers within the senior squad for a couple more weeks. In terms of academy players, however, he could begin to integrate them into the team after he has made sure that the current crop of senior players understand what he wants.

It could be detrimental to throw an academy player in halfway through the transition period as they would be playing catchup in comparison to the first-team performers who are also still learning what van Bronckhorst wants. Whereas, the older heads could nurture the young players and teach them along the way if they are already accustomed to what the manager wants to see in training and in games.

Therefore, fans will be delighted with McLeish’s claim that van Bronckhorst will focus on results in the Premiership and Europa League before focusing on other areas at a later date. It certainly seems as if he’s got his priorities in order early doors.

Sudeep Tyagi and Munaf Patel blew away India Blue for a paltry 84 before the India Red batsmen knocked off the target without much fuss to lift the Challenger Trophy in Nagpur.Tyagi started the demolition job with a fine spell of seam bowling. He was off radar during the Irani Cup, often bowling very short, but he was on song from the first ball today. He varied from back of a length to full and punctuated his offcutters with the one that straightened outside off. Tyagi struck first ball with a peach of a delivery that pegged back from outside off to knock out the off stump of Naman Ojha, who had shouldered arms.He then got one to cut back in from a fuller length to nail SS Kumar in front before troubling Harbhajan Singh with his bouncing offcutters from short of a length. Suddenly, he hurled one fuller to catch Harbhajan on the crease and knocked out off stump. If Tyagi can consistently reprise his today’s efforts, he will be knocking on the selectors’ doors. Those three wickets had broken Blue’s back and Munaf, who bowled first change today, settled in his rhythm quickly to cause further havoc. There is an opening in the Indian team and Munaf, sensing that, has been bowling really well right from the Irani Cup. Today, again, he operated at his best. He again hit the full length and found enough movement, nothing visually alarming but just enough, to cause trouble. He probed Wasim Jaffer’s weakness on the front foot by repeatedly drawing the batsman forward before he sneaked one in to get an lbw verdict. Yusuf Pathan gifted his wicket to Munaf with a fatal drive to mid-off and Abhishek Nayar dragged one from outside off onto the stumps. Munaf went on to collect Sreesanth’s wicket with a bouncer though it appeared to have gone off the arm guard for a catch behind the wicket. The third seamer, Ishant Sharma, tried to hit a fuller length but offered enough width outside off time and again to relieve the pressure but R Ashwin, the offspinner, bowled well to prevent Blue from breaking free. He beat Dhoni in flight and induced an airy drive to mid-off before he harassed Nayar with his off breaks and straighter ones. Nayar never looked comfortable against Ashwin and threw his wicket away to Munaf. Ashwin grew in confidence and even slipped in a carrom ball which squared-up Jalaj Saxena though didn’t get him a wicket. Ishant returned to terminate the innings with a double strike.Shikhar Dhawan and M Vijay got Red off to a steady start, negotiating a good spell from Sreesanth. Vijay, who was dropped by Ojha off Sreesanth when he pushed at a length delivery that shaped away, fell to Harbhajan but Dhawan hung around long enough to ensure the target would be reached without much alarm.

Espero ajudar o time – disse, nesta segunda-feira.

Shearer tipped for top NUFC role

With recent reports claiming that Newcastle United have hired an external recruitment firm to help in their search for a director of football, the club’s new hierarchy may not need to look too far to find someone that could play a vital role in the way the Tyneside club is run behind the scenes.

Speaking to City A.M., Rob Lee has been sharing his thoughts on the possibility of former Toon striker and club legend Alan Shearer taking a role at the club.

He said: “I would get someone who knows Newcastle and the club and sits as an adviser to everybody, to the board – even above a director of football.

“Because if we get the top job wrong, every other job is wrong. I think it’s imperative to get it right behind the scenes before we get it right on the pitch because it starts at the very top. I’m a great friend of Alan but he would be my choice. You know he’s not going to be influenced by anybody. He’ll make decisions because he loves Newcastle.

“He’ll give his honest opinion. He’s not scared of anyone, he won’t be bullied by agents. They can trust him to give them the right call.”

With 206 goals scored in 405 appearances for the Toon across all competitions, it’s safe to say that he is a club legend and well-loved by the masses at St James’ Park. Thus, they would presumably love to see him take a role at the club.

He absolutely adores not only the city but also the football club and any advise he can offer the likes of Amanda Staveley and those who now sit in the boardroom will be considered with his heart and soul.

A managerial stint with the Toon didn’t go well back in April 2009 as he failed to steer them to safety, eventually seeing his beloved side relegated to the Championship.

Yet, the 51-year-old is now wiser, older and not constrained by the dreaded Mike Ashley so an arrival back in the northeast would be rather suitable for all parties.

Although PIF have plenty of riches, one thing they don’t have yet is a connection with the city and the club’s supporters. Shearer, however, could fix that early issue and help bring the new ownership closer to the fanbase.

Staveley revealed back in October that she had been in contact with Shearer over a potential role for him at the Tyneside club, and it seems as though something could potentially be in the pipeline for him at some point in the future. Should he be hired by the club, it would surely leave a lot of Toon fans buzzing and coupled with PIF, would be a dream come true for both them and the former striker.

If Newcastle struggle to secure a permanent director of football in the coming weeks, PIF should definitely make a formal approach to the ex-England international to work out what position he could have at the club that would be beneficial when considering his love and knowledge of everything connected to the Magpies.

Bosman and Smith lead rout of England

Loots Bosman fell one blow short of recording only the second century in Twenty20 internationals, and Graeme Smith made a statement of his own by hammering 88 from 44 balls, as South Africa responded to their defeat in Friday’s first T20I at the Wanderers

Loots Bosman fell one blow short of recording only the second century in Twenty20 internationals, and Graeme Smith made a statement of his own by hammering 88 from 44 balls, as South Africa responded to their defeat in Friday’s first T20I at the Wanderers by squaring the series with one of the most powerful displays of batting ever witnessed at international level. In total the South Africans smacked 19 fours and a world-record 17 sixes to rattle along to a massive total of 241 for 6 – second only to Sri Lanka’s 260 against the minnows of Kenya two years ago. Unsurprisingly it was all too much for England’s hit-and-miss cricketers, whose quest for consistency continues unabated. Not even the unscheduled return of Kevin Pietersen could rescue them from humiliation, although he did at least chip in with two of their six sixes in reply, before succumbing to his first attempt at a switch hit. That other former South African, Jonathan Trott, also hung around for an 40-ball 51, but – in a measure of the extent to which England were outclassed – England’s 20-over total of 157 for 8 was 13 runs fewer than Smith and Bosman managed between them during a sensational 13-over opening stand. It all added up to a cruel introduction to the captaincy for Alastair Cook – who took charge of the side for the first time following the withdrawal of Paul Collingwood before the toss. His stint got off to a misleadingly competent start when James Anderson conceded just two runs from his first over, and at 14 for 0 after three, England appeared to be exerting a measure of control. But it was not to last. Sajid Mahmood’s first over was a horror show – he conceded 21 runs, including three fours from his first three balls, and a free-hit for six as Bosman belted his final ball of the over through midwicket. To compound the indignity, Mahmood had also fired a perfect yorker through Smith’s defences off another free-hit, as well as having Bosman caught at mid-off from his second no-ball of the over.It was the tonic that South Africa’s batsmen needed, and there was no holding back from that moment onwards. With Cook shuffling his bowlers and rearranging his field after every other delivery, Tim Bresnan was clubbed for 16 runs as he returned after a change of ends, while Luke Wright, unsurprisingly replacing the hapless Mahmood, was drilled for two further sixes from his first three balls. On 39, Smith offered his first genuine chance, when he mistimed a Wright slower-ball and fizzed the ball back past the bowler’s ears, as 55 runs were clobbered from the last three overs of the Powerplay. Mahmood returned to the attack with some initial success, with only three runs coming from the first four deliveries of his second over, but Bosman further shredded his figures with a biffed four through mid-on and the biggest of his four sixes to date, an effortless pick-up over midwicket. At 82 for 0 after seven overs, it was an inauspicious moment for Adil Rashid to join the attack, and sure enough, the gamble of taking the pace off the ball backfired spectacularly. Rashid’s first over was smeared for 25, including a brace of sixes for each of the batsmen – Smith biffed his first two balls over midwicket to hurtle to a 25-ball half-century, and after a stumping appeal and a single, Bosman sent his last two in a similar direction.Bosman’s own fifty was also brought up from 25 balls, with a push for two to long-on off Wright, who was by some distance the pick of England’s middle-over bowlers. But at the opposite end, the carnage continued unabated. Bresnan returned for his third over, but Smith hammered his first two balls for six, and when Mahmood replaced him at the Grandstand End, he served up a juicy full-toss that Smith dispatched with aplomb onto the grassy banks at midwicket.Such was England’s predicament that Pietersen, who wasn’t even meant to be beginning his England comeback until Tuesday’s warm-up, was whistled up to bowl the 13th over. But Bosman belted him into the crowd at midwicket for his seventh – and South Africa’s 13th – six of the innings, before finding the gap at backward square leg one ball later.Eventually, it was Cook’s second speculative bowling change that made the long-awaited breakthrough, as he threw the ball to Joe Denly for his first over in international cricket, and Smith responded by slapping his very first delivery to Mahmood at long-on. One over, and two further sixes later, Bresnan provided Pietersen with something to smile about, as he stretched superbly on the long-off boundary to intercept another lusty blow, this time from Albie Morkel.England did manage to finish the innings with some dignity restored, as five wickets fell in five consecutive overs. JP Duminy aimed a hoick over midwicket off Anderson, but steepled a leading edge to Wright at point, before Bosman’s masterclass came to a cruel end. On 94 from just 44 balls, and sizing up a tenth six to become only the second batsman after Chris Gayle to score a Twenty20 international hundred, he launched into a Wright full-toss, but found Anderson hurtling in at deep midwicket to claim a magnificent tumbling catch.Jacques Kallis, back in the side after missing Friday’s first game, then gave Mahmood some light relief as he swished at a slower ball and lost his off stump. But England, who excelled themselves in posting their highest Twenty20 total two days ago at the Wanderers, were left needing the highest score ever made in a 20-over fixture between two senior nations. It never looked like happening. After first-ball ducks in each of his previous Twenty20s, Denly this time survived until the fourth over before inside-edging Yusuf Abdulla onto his off stump. By that stage, however, England were already drifting out of contention, and in fact they didn’t score their first six until the ninth over, when Trott dropped to one knee to hoist Roelof van der Merwe over midwicket.Cook chivvied as best he could, given that his style of batting is not exactly renowned for clearing the ropes, but when he clipped Morkel to midwicket for 26 from 21 balls, Pietersen emerged to a predictable chorus of boos. Mocking laughter might have been more appropriate, however, seeing as England were 65 for 2 after 9.3 overs, with an asking rate that was already approaching three runs a ball.England never threatened to turn the tide of the match. Trott and Pietersen’s 52-run stand was as good as it got, and though Eoin Morgan picked up where he had left off at the Wanderers by reverse-flicking his first ball for four, Dale Steyn blasted through his defences for 10, before the tail dribbled away in a non-descript fashion.

Rangers: Joey Veerman ‘definitely’ a target

Joey Veerman ‘remains high’ on Rangers’ list of transfer targets, journalist Pete O’Rourke has told Give Me Sport.

The lowdown

The 23-year-old central midfielder plays for Heerenveen in the Eredivisie. He has two-and-a-half years left on his contract with the club and is valued at £6.3m by Transfermarkt.

Rangers may need to seek replacements if some of their existing midfielders are lured elsewhere. The Gers are braced for January interest in Glen Kamara, while Joe Aribo also has admirers from the Premier League.

The latest

O’Rourke told Give Me Sport that Rangers attempted to bring in Veerman last summer, when Steven Gerrard was still their manager, and that the club’s interest hasn’t subsided.

He wonders if the defender’s Dutch compatriot Giovanni van Bronckhorst might enjoy more success in pursuit of the player, saying: “Veerman will definitely be high on the list of targets. They tried to sign him in the summer and he still remains high on their list of potential targets.

“With van Bronckhorst in there now, I think it just gives extra weight in maybe following up that interest in the Dutchman.”

The verdict

Veerman would arrive at Ibrox with some pretty glowing endorsements. Dutch coach Robert Molenaar has called him ‘extremely good’ on the ball, adding that he plays like he’s ‘on a square in [the village of] Volendam’. Meanwhile, former Rangers defender Michael Ball has said that ‘his numbers are fantastic’.

Ball is right to do so – Veerman has been directly involved in nine goals (scoring three and setting up six) in 15 league appearances in 2021/22. He also ranks in the Eredivisie’s top six for chances created per 90 minutes with 2.4 (via WhoScored).

Hopefully O’Rourke’s suspicion that Van Bronckhorst’s arrival at Rangers could be a substantial step towards persuading the 23-year-old to make the move to Ibrox, especially if Aribo moves south of the border.
