Madan Lal applies for ICL release

Madan Lal has applied for a release from the ICL in what is the first officially known response from the unauthorised league’s players and support staff to the BCCI’s recent amnesty offer

Ajay S Shankar and Nagraj Gollapudi13-May-2009Madan Lal, the former India allrounder and coach, has applied for a release from the ICL in what is the first officially known response from the unauthorised league’s players and support staff to the BCCI’s recent amnesty offer. Lal, who was coach of ICL’s Delhi Giants, said he expected more cricketers and some support staff to follow suit and hoped the BCCI would utilise his services appropriately.”I have applied for a release from the ICL contract,” Lal told Cricinfo. “I am thankful to the BCCI for allowing an opportunity for those with the ICL to return to the official fold. I have coached various Indian teams at different levels before and I hope the BCCI will utilise my services and experience in the best manner possible.”Lal’s request followed an ICL communication to its players and support staff last week to send in their requests for a release, if needed, before May 15. The ICL will then hold a management meeting, possibly on May 18, to decide on these requests and the future course of action.Sandeep Patil, Balwinder Sandhu and Karsan Ghavri, three former India players, and Ajit Wadekar, a former India captain, had approached the ICL for a release before the BCCI’s offer because of a “lack of adequate cricket”.”Days before the BCCI decision, three of us coaches – Sandeep Patil, Balwinder Singh Sandhu (Dhaka Warriors coach) and myself – had a meeting with Himanshu Mody [ICL business head] and Kiran More [ICL board member],” Ghavri told Cricinfo. “We told them about our issues including no cricket being played from November 2007 and also about the salaries not being paid after that. Keeping in the prevailing conditions, we asked them to release us. We then got a call saying we were free to leave and would get our release letter by May 20. On April 30, Ajit Wadekar and I submitted the application for a release.”Patil, who had coached ICL’s Mumbai Champs, had stood down from active duty by the end of the last season due to “personal reasons”. “At the meeting with the ICL, they gave the coaches the option to continue or step down,” Patil told Cricinfo. “In any case I had resigned even before the BCCI decision to grant amnesty to the ICL players, coaches and backroom staff. I have no complaints and no regrets.”ICL officials, however, refused to confirm whether they had received any official requests from players or support staff for a release. “We remain confident about our future plans, especially the October programme,” an official said. The ICL had cancelled its March tournament due to the deepening economic recession and the non-availability of Lahore Badshahs, the Pakistan team, due to cross-border political tensions following the Mumbai attacks.”I have had an excellent relationship with the ICL over the last two years and I have no complaints at all about that association,” Lal, a member of the 1983 World Cup-winning squad, said. “But now I feel it’s the right time to move on professionally. There are many other ICL players and support staff who think similarly.” Apart from his ICL commitments, Lal runs a coaching academy in Delhi and has a media contract with a television channel. The BCCI had announced on April 30 that ICL players and support staff who wished to return to the official fold should do so by May 31. These players would be immediately allowed to play domestic cricket, including the IPL, and will become eligible for international cricket after a ‘cooling period’ of one year. Significantly, the ICC’s new rules for official and unofficial cricket, which aims to plug existing loopholes, will come into force from June 1.BCCI officials were not available for comment but it’s understood that the board has written to various state associations to confirm the amnesty offer and stipulate the norms that needed to be followed while readmitting such players. “We have been told that we would either have to produce an NOC from ICL or hand over a copy of the contract termination letter that has been sent by us to ICL,” a senior ICL player told Cricinfo. “We might then have to sign an official undertaking with the BCCI, which would bar us from participating in leagues or tournaments not authorised by the Indian board.”

Rangers: Morelos let Gerrard down

Rangers were held to a 1-1 draw on Saturday at Ibrox as a last-minute equaliser from Hearts prevented them from moving further clear at the top of the table.

John Lundstram opened the scoring with a sublime long-range effort, but Craig Halkett’s late header ensured that Hearts came away with a point.

Steven Gerrard’s side remain top of the Premiership with 20 points after nine games, as they sit four points ahead of Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic.

One player who let Gerrard down against Hearts and contributed to the club’s failure to win was centre-forward Alfredo Morelos. The striker had a difficult afternoon as he struggled throughout the match, both off and on the ball in the game.

Offensively, he was far too wasteful. Per SofaScore, he had a whopping seven efforts on goal without forcing a single save from the goalkeeper. Four of his shots went off target and the other three were blocked by Hearts defenders, with one block coming in the second-half as Joe Aribo slipped him in behind and the Colombian took a second too long to get his shot off – allowing the defender to come across and stop him.

It is worth adding that he created five chances for his teammates, showing glimpses of the quality he possesses – although he ended the game without an assist. However, his creativity did not excuse his terrible shooting and lack of conviction in front of goal, given that he was Rangers’ starting number nine tasked with scoring the goals.

Off the ball, he was a lightweight. Per SofaScore, he lost 70% (7/10) of his duels on the pitch, as he lost four out of six on the ground and three out of four in the air. He also committed two fouls as he completed one tackle and failed to make any interceptions, showing how he was little help defensively for the Gers.

Therefore, he let Gerrard down with his performance as he wasted key opportunities to win the game for Rangers and was a liability in the physical side of the game. The ex-Liverpool player and coach will surely be hoping for better from the forward when the Gers face Brondby in the Europa League on Thursday.

Leeds: Phil Hay makes 2022 transfer claim

Leeds journalist Phil Hay has made a big Andrea Radrizzani transfer claim ahead of the 2022 summer window…

What’s the talk?

The Athletic reporter has claimed that the window could be a busy one for Leeds as owner Andrea Radrizzani wants to take the club into Europe.

Replying to a fan questioning the lack of money spent in the summer, Hay said: “What I’m starting to feel now is that if this season is going to be a slog (and it looks like it will be) now is the time to start seriously thinking about what to do next summer.

“Investment in the squad will definitely be needed because Radrizzani is the one who keeps talking about Europe. It seems like next summer should be so much more active than this one.”

Leeds fans could be buzzing

Leeds fans will surely be left buzzing by this claim from Hay as it suggests that they are in for an exciting summer next year. The Whites added only two senior players to their squad in the window just gone, with Junior Firpo and Dan James arriving from Barcelona and Manchester United respectively for a combined fee of £39.69m.

Young goalkeeper Kristoffer Klaesson was also brought in and Jack Harrison’s loan from Manchester City was finally converted into a permanent deal. Their spending totalled £53.01m as they made nothing from outgoings, which shows that Radrizzani did invest a fair amount in the squad despite the relatively low number of new faces.

It also highlights why Leeds fans may now be excited about what could be to come next summer. Hay believes that the club could be in for a busy transfer window in comparison to the one just gone, which suggests that more than £53m could be spent. Fans will surely be delighted as it means that big money could be invested in some exciting talent to add to the squad, particularly if the rest of this season continues to be a “slog”, as Hay put it.

They will also be buzzing with the club’s ambition to qualify for Europe in the coming seasons. Imagine a European night at Elland Road after so long without one to enjoy… it sends chills down the spine. If Radrizzani can give Marcelo Bielsa and Victor Orta the funds to go and build a squad capable of challenging for the top six, then fans could start to believe that the glory days will return to Yorkshire.

Edgar Schiferli, the Netherlands medium-pacer, has been named Man of the Tournament for his consistent bowling performances in the ICC World Cup Qualifiers in South Africa. Schiferli opened the bowling and was the highest wicket-taker with 24 scalps at 17.37.Schiferli, 32, took four wickets in an innings on two occasions during the voting period, against Kenya in the group stage and Scotland in the Super Eights before adding another in the third-place play-off against Kenya. His batting down the order also proved handy for Netherlands; Schiferli averaged 19.00 at a strike-rate of 168.88 with a top score of 41.ICC match referee Roshan Mahanama, one of the adjudicators for the award, said the other nominees were Netherlands’ Alexei Kervezee and William Porterfield of Ireland. “It was a very difficult choice and we spent a long time deliberating and debating the various contenders,” he said. “We decided that Edgar’s bowling, on what were essentially batsman-friendly wickets, was instrumental in gaining qualification for his team while his all-round contribution was also more than useful.”Opening the bowling is not an easy task these days with Powerplays and pinch-hitters so it’s always important that teams take wickets early. Edgar did that on a regular basis with good pace and excellent lines to make life very difficult for the tournament’s batsmen.”On the day he was named for the award, Schiferli took 4 for 23 in the third-place play-off game against Kenya at Potchefstroom.

– Vi as imagens, pois estava no outro camarote.

Pakistan look to keep the spark alive

If Pakistan are to achieve anything significant in this tournament as a team they will have to do so inspite of themselves

Big PictureIf Pakistan are to achieve anything significant in this tournament as a team they will have to do so inspite of themselves. As a bowling unit they have been both wasteful and outstanding. The comeback to halt Sri Lanka on Friday was as good as they have been, but the waste of Sohail Tanvir’s first over and the extras ultimately rendered it futile. It is an age-old problem and will not be resolved overnight. As a batting side, they have lacked the bombast required to negotiate the Powerplay and even the nous to keep singles coming along. Younis Khan has battled alone and if it is said that he is not a Twenty20 player, it is forgotten that he needs others to play around him. With bat in hand he has done his job, more than many expected; his colleagues have failed him. The less said about the fielding the better, though at least they didn’t drop any catches against Sri Lanka. These are elementary things and it will require something special to overcome them. Loathe as we should be to say it, Pakistan’s progress depends on one of those bewildering, fascinating, unexpected individual hands that occur from time to time. A Shahid Afridi or Umar Gul spell, an Abdul Razzaq or Misbah-ul-Haq special; something, anything, any spark for they are perilously close to being extinguished fully. As with Sri Lanka, their record against New Zealand in big tournaments is solid; they’ve won nine of 12, and if this were a semi-final you’d bet on Pakistan such has been their dominance over the Kiwis at that stage. But it isn’t and in any case Sri Lanka rendered a similarly poor record irrelevant. New Zealand’s concerns are primarily of a medical nature. Jesse Ryder is gone and Ross Taylor and Daniel Vettori, vital cogs both, are still hampered; Vettori has yet to play a game in the tournament.Though one McCullum has done well, they wouldn’t mind a Brendon spectacular either. Like India to an extent, they are untested, especially their batting; wins over Scotland are Ireland will count for little and the loss to South Africa, where their batsmen struggled, was a dead tie.Form guide (last five matches, most recent first)
Pakistan: LWLWL
New Zealand: WLWWW
Watch out for…Abdul Razzaq has unwittingly set himself up as a potential saviour and wildcard. Such is Pakistan’s despair that the fact that he hasn’t played international cricket for two years or that he was in dire form when he last did so, doesn’t matter much. Razzaq’s return has, over the last two days, been viewed by many to be just the tonic to galvanise Pakistan. Don’t rely on it but if he did do something special with bat or ball – he was at least outstanding in the ICL – you wouldn’t be entirely surprised.Aaron Redmond’s return to New Zealand colours was similar in a sense though as a replacement for Jesse Ryder, he had vastly bigger shoes to fill. He brought all the verve of one who wasn’t expecting any such opportunity in his 30-ball 63 against Scotland and you wouldn’t bet against a repeat. If Brendon McCullum finally locates his range, Redmond may not be needed.Team newsIf Pakistan don’t drop Salman Butt now then it will be the most emphatic confirmation that they are not taking this tournament seriously enough. Sohail Tanvir’s troubles are more complex but now may not be the time to patiently see him through them. Razzaq is certain to come in. The question is who else will?Pakistan: (probable) 1 Ahmed Shehzad, 2 Kamran Akmal (wk), 3 Shoaib Malik, 4 Misbah-ul-Haq, 5 Younis Khan (capt), 6 Abdul Razzaq, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Fawad Alam, 9 Umar Gul, 10 Mohammad Aamer, 11 Saeed AjmalNew Zealand will only hope that both Daniel Vettori and Ross Taylor are fit enough to play.New Zealand: (probable) 1 Brendon McCullum (capt), 2 Aaron Redmond, 3 Martin Guptill, 4 Scott Styris, 5 Jacob Oram, 6 Peter McGlashan (wk), 7 James Franklin, 8 Neil Broom, 9 Nathan McCullum, 10 Ian Butler, 11 Kyle MillsStats and TriviaYounis Khan is the tournament’s second-highest run-scorer, averaging 66 with a strike rate of 150. Decent figures for a man not considered to be a Twenty20 player by his own (ex-) chief selector.New Zealand have lost to Pakistan three times in a World Cup semi-final; 1992 and 1999 in 50-over World Cups and in the 2007 Twenty20 World Cup.Quotes”In every single game we’ve had trouble with our start. Today was a crucial game and we had back-to-back no-balls in the first over.”

“When you’ve got nothing to lose you go out there and give it a go. I was pleased it came off. I got a couple in the slot early on and took it from there.”

Vieira could unearth a gem in Aiden Steele

Crystal Palace have entered a new chapter in their history under the tutelage of Patrick Vieira, and the Frenchman could oversee a fresh wave of homegrown talent entering the senior ranks.

The Eagles have recently seen their academy facilities upgraded to Category 1 status after significant investment, and the fruits of their labour are already starting to show.

Last season, the under-18s only missed out on the league title to local rivals Fulham on goal difference, with several young stars making a name for themselves through a string of impressive performances.

One of those who caught the eye was 19-year-old midfielder Aiden Steele. The Northern Irishman joined Palace’s youth system in July 2019, but he really burst onto the scene last season.

He started 24 games for the under-18s throughout 2020/21, captaining them on 17 occasions, and was rewarded for his efforts in the engine room with a call-up to Shaun Derry’s under-23 setup.

The teenager has cultivated an enviable reputation for himself within the south London club, with the Eagles’ official website lauding his commitment both on and off the field.

“Steele’s grit and determination in midfield is coupled with professionalism and hard work off it,” his profile reads.

The praise for Steele inside Selhurst Park does not stop there. In a recent interview, youth coach Paddy McCarthy reportedly labelled the engine room operator “an honest and top professional” and someone who is “the first one out and the last one to leave the training pitch.”

His eye-catching displays for the club earned the youngster a call-up to the Northern Ireland under-21s in March for the very first time, but he remains ambitious to go even further in his career.

“I think I probably model myself on Toni Kroos as he has such a great passing range, touch and football brain,” Steele recently admitted. “I love the way he reads the game and can dictate a game with his one and two touch passing.”

With current Palace midfielders Luka Milivojevic, James McArthur and Cheikhou Kouyate all 30 or over and entering the twilight period of their careers, there could be an opportunity for Vieira to unearth a real gem over the coming years, but only time will tell if Steele gets his opportunity to impress at Selhurst Park.
