Khurram pleased with UAE's preparations for WCQs

United Arab Emirates (UAE) captain Khurram Khan believes the time is right for cricket in the Emirates to make a long-awaited comeback from the heights it attained by reaching the 1996 World Cup in the subcontinent

United Arab Emirates (UAE) captain Khurram Khan believes the time is right for cricket in the Emirates to make a long-awaited comeback from the heights it attained when they made it to the 1996 World Cup in the subcontinent.Khurram, the 37-year-old allrounder, said preparations were “going well” for the World Cup Qualifier (WCQs) in South Africa from April 1-19. “We started a couple of months ago with our new coach (former Sussex and England batsman) Colin Wells and the guys are shaping up very well. We have some new players, some youngsters in the team so it looks good for the future as well but we are ready now,” he said.Asked about their aspirations going into the big event, considering the relative strength of some of the other competing teams, Khurram said, “Our goal is to qualify for the World Cup. We have played against some of the teams such as Ireland, Scotland, Netherlands and others – they are very good teams but we are going well.”We have played some practice matches and we are also involved in the Emirates Airline Pro Arch Trophy against six English county teams taking place in the UAE. I’m sure the other teams are working hard but our preparations are going well too.”Khurram also said the sport should continue to be promoted in the UAE. “I think cricket will grow in the UAE, especially if we qualify for the World Cup. The ICC moving here is also a boost for cricket in the UAE as is the completion of the cricket stadium in Dubai Sports City and the ICC Global Cricket Academy. So cricket is developing here day by day.”Cricket has a huge following in the UAE especially if you take the big expatriate populations from places like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. For locals it’s not the No. 1 sport but there are many local people who play the game and that number is increasing,” he said.UAE are in Group B which includes Bermuda, Kenya, Netherlands, Afghanistan, and Denmark and they open their campaign against Bermauda in Potchefstroom on April 1.They qualified for the 1996 edition after winning the ICC Trophy (as it was then known) in 1993-94, defeating Kenya in the final. There was plenty of drama in the last qualifiers, when they narrowly missed out on making it to the 2007 tournament in West Indies when the lost to Netherlands in the fifth-sixth playoff match, thereby missing out on the last qualification spot.

Preview: Celtic XI vs Aberdeen

Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side head into Sunday’s Scottish Premiership fixture in an undeniably poor run of form, with the Bhoys having picked up just 10 points over their opening seven games of the 2021/22 campaign.

However, Celtic’s hosts this afternoon, Aberdeen, are also a side out of sorts at present, with Stephen Glass’ men being without a win in five league fixtures – with the Dons currently languishing down in ninth place in the league table on eight points.

So, with Postecoglou undoubtedly hoping the Bhoys can pick up their first away win of the season at Pittodrie, will the 56-year-old manager make any changes to the team which started in the 4-0 loss to Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday?

Here’s how we think Celtic could line up against the Dons, along with the latest team and injury news…

With Josip Juranovic, James Forrest, Mikey Johnston and Christopher Jullien all failing to recover from their respective injuries in time for Sunday’s clash – with Postecoglou hoping that all four of the stricken quartet are once available after the upcoming international break – in addition to the longer-term absences of both Greg Taylor and Karamoko Dembele remaining sidelined, the manager’s options for the trip to Pittodrie are still somewhat limited.

However, we nevertheless predict that the Hoops boss will make two changes to the side that started against Leverkusen on Thursday.

In defence, the back five of Joe Hart, Adam Montgomery, Carl Starfelt, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Anthony Ralston remains unchanged from the Europa League loss.

The first change comes in central midfield, with the £4.5m-rated David Turnbull dropping out of the side for James McCarthy, in order to provide greater balance to the Celtic side with a slight tweak coming in attack.

Here, attacking midfielder Tom Rogic has to make do with a spot on the bench, with Kyogo Furuhashi – who started as the lone striker on Thursday – dropping back into a support striker role, while Jota and Liel Abada retain their places on the left and right flank respectively.

Replacing Furuhashi up top is Georgios Giakoumakis, with the Greek international being handed his league debut against Aberdeen, as Postecoglou will undoubtedly hoping that the 26-year-old can end Celtic’s run of two games away from Parkhead without hitting the back of the net.

O resultado mantém a equipe no G6 do Campeonato Brasileiro.

LFC fans unhappy with Thiago news

Liverpool fans are far from happy with the news that Thiago Alcantara has not featured in any images from the Reds’ latest training session at Kirkby.

The Spain international was signed from Bayern Munich last summer, and was expected to become a key member of Liverpool’s squad. However, it hasn’t quite worked out like that.

He has so far managed just 35 appearances for the club since making the switch (Transfermarkt), as injuries have curtailed his chances of really unleashing his obvious quality.

He has made just two starts for Jurgen Klopp’s side in the Premier League this campaign, and has missed the last two through injury. Now, it appears that he could be out of the action for a little while longer as he was not pictured during the club’s latest training session.

The news was shared on Twitter by @AnfieldWatch, and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about the Thiago update below

Warne backs Kamran, Jadeja and Yusuf to fire

Shane Warne has named Kamran Khan, a 18-year-old rookie left-arm fast bowler, as one of the players to watch out for in the IPL starting in Cape Town on Saturday

Shane Warne, the Rajasthan Royals captain, has named Kamran Khan, a 18-year-old rookie left-arm fast bowler, as one of the players to watch out for in the IPL starting in Cape Town on Saturday. Warne has also provided fresh insights into his relationship with Graeme Smith, a bitter rival once but an IPL team-mate now, and reiterated his controversial theory that an international team doesn’t need a coach.Warne, whose captaincy was a revelation during last year’s IPL when he galvanised a bunch of not-so-famous players into a winning combination, insisted that he did not regret missing out on being Australia captain. He shared his shortlist of Rajasthan’s potential stars of this IPL with the South Africa-based newspaper and included Kamran, who bowled just one over against Cape Cobras in a warm-up on Saturday, alongside India players Ravindra Jadeja and Yusuf Pathan. Indian media reported that Kamran, who bowled Cobras’ Justin Ontong with an off-stump yorker in that over, is the son of a woodcutter who gained his shoulder strength from cutting wood in Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh in north India. He is yet to play first-class cricket and was reportedly signed by Rajasthan Royals for Rs12 lakh (US$24,000) a year after Darren Berry, the assistant coach, spotted him at a local tournament in Mumbai. The team, which had nicknames for each player to pin down his role in the side, is reportedly on the verge of finalising one for Kamran. “We’ve got one young player who’s going to be very interesting,” Warne said. “We’re tossing up now what his nickname is going to be — Wild Thing or Tornado, something like that. Kamran Khan is a young kid, a left-armer, a slinger, he doesn’t speak much English at the moment. He’s a tiny little guy but he bowls 140 plus. Another guy to look out for is Ravindra Jadeja. He played last year, did enough but he’s had another year of experience. Then there’s Yusuf Pathan. He was dynamite last year, he just destroys medium-pace and spin bowling. He and Andrew Symonds are two of the cleanest hitters I’ve ever seen.”Smith was also important to his plans for a lot of reasons, Warne said. “One is that he’s another captain to bounce ideas off,” he said. “When I’m bowling, he’s someone to keep an eye on the field. When I’m talking to a bowler he’s making sure the best fielders are in the right spots. I think he enjoys the IPL as well, just having the opportunity and the freedom to go out and bat without the responsibility of anything else. For us, being in South Africa and having the captain of South Africa in our side is a huge advantage.”He said he had become “good buddies” with Smith after spending some time together during the inaugural IPL, and added that the latter had matured as a captain, too. “We had a few beers after the first game and chatted about a lot of stuff,” he said. “We hung out a fair bit. We’ve kept in touch since then and become good buddies. They [South Africa] have done well. He’s matured a bit too. He came in at a young age and wanted to try and mix it. He didn’t want to take a backward step. He was so verbal and public about everything. We won 5-0 [in 2005/06] and I said to him the other day, when something’s not working, try to do something else. Don’t just continue and let the ego get in the way. He said, ‘yeah, yeah, I’ve learned my lesson’. He learned a lot about himself and how things work. He’s matured into a good captain.”Warne also insisted his views on international coaching had not changed even years after his controversial rift with John Buchanan, the former Australia coach.”The only reason I’m coach is because the Royals don’t really have a coach,” he said. “I’m just the captain, really. I’ve got two assistants who do a good job in Darren Berry and Jeremy Snape. Darren looks after practice while I get around and speak to individuals and Snapey floats around, helps guys prepare and does some one-on-one stuff. Captains should always run the cricket. At international level I don’t think you need a coach. At domestic level you need a coach.”He said he had no regrets about not being Australia captain but added he enjoyed captaincy. “I’d be sitting in a straitjacket in a padded cell if I started regretting everything that happened in my life,” he said. “I never chased the captaincy. If I’d had the opportunity it would have been great but I don’t look back and think about it. I’ve captained the Royals, Hampshire, Victoria and Australia in one-day matches. People can see the way I captain. I enjoy being captain and it brings out the best in me.”
