Watford striker Troy Deeney looks increasingly likely to leave Vicarage Road ahead of Tuesday’s deadline and it could be a huge mistake to let him go.

What’s the word?

The Athletic have suggested that the Hornets are willing to terminate Deeney’s contract in order to let him join Birmingham City this month, with both sides keen to reach an agreement.

Deeney might well be regarded as a Watford legend but he looks unlikely to play regularly in the Premier League for Xisco Munoz’s side this season and therefore a move to St Andrew’s, to play for the team he supports, would make a lot of sense for the 33-year-old striker.

A mistake to let him go?

Although you could argue that the likes of Emmanuel Dennis, Josh King, Joao Pedro, Cucho Hernandez and Ashley Fletcher are all ahead of Deeney in the pecking order at Vicarage Road, you can’t underestimate the influence that he has at the club.

During his time with the Hornets, the striker, who reportedly earns £65k per week, has contributed 140 goals and 62 assists in 419 appearances, playing a huge part in Watford reaching, and staying in, the Premier League in the past 11 seasons.

Even last season, when he was a fringe player in Xisco’s squad, he managed seven goals and three assists in 19 appearances and you feel that he would be a good player to keep around this season as they look to avoid relegation from the top-flight, as he certainly still has the ability to pop up with important goals.

At 33, Deeney will undoubtedly be a huge part of the dressing room at Watford and you feel that, if the Hornets were dragged into a relegation battle this season, the striker could have played a huge part both on and off the pitch, so it feels like a mistake to let him leave for nothing.

However, Lee Bowyer clearly wants him at Birmingham, calling him a “winner” when questioned about him last week and you feel that it could prove to be a big mistake to let someone like that leave when this could be a tough season for the Hornets.

Fulham have been dealt a blow in their bid to bring Matt Grimes to Craven Cottage this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Athletic, who claim that Marco Silva’s side have seen a second bid, believed to be in the region of £2.5m, for the Swansea City central midfielder rejected.

The report goes on to state that, at present, it appears unclear whether the Cottagers will return with a third offer for the 26-year-old in the coming days, while also suggesting that Fulham will be aware the Swans are in a difficult position regarding the former England U21 international, as he has just one year remaining on his current contract at the Liberty Stadium.

Silva will be gutted

Following Fabrizio Romano’s claim that Andre Zambo Anguissa looks set to join Napoli in the coming hours, the fact that Fulham have seen their offer rejected for a player who could well be Silva’s replacement for the Cameroon international is sure to have left the Portuguese manager gutted.

It is easy to see why Silva seems to be so keen on the Swansea City captain, as the 26-year-old would very much appear to make a fantastic addition to his Fulham side, something his form from last season illustrates perfectly.

Indeed, over his 45 Championship appearances for the Swans last term, the £6.3m-rated man scored two goals, provided three assists and created three big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of one shot and making 0.8 key passes per game.

The man Steve Cooper dubbed an “excellent” player also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, making an average of 1.5 interceptions, 2.1 tackles, 1.3 clearances and winning 5.3 duels in each league fixture.

These returns saw the £10k-per-week midfielder earn a highly impressive seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.04, ranking him as his side’s fifth-best performer in the second tier of English football.

As such, it is clear to see that a deal for Grimes would be a fantastic transfer for Fulham to get over the line this summer, particularly following the news that Anguissa could be on his way out of west London by the end of the day.

However, with Swansea standing firm on their demands for the 26-year-old at present, Silva will have to weigh up whether or not he can afford to go back with an improved offer for the central midfielder in the coming days.

Contra o Galo, o baiano de 27 anos jogará no lugar de Dudu. O Palmeiras é o primeiro clube grande da sua carreira. Encontrou alguma dificuldade para se adaptar?
Eu não encontrei dificuldade, os jogadores são gente boa. Desde o primeiro dia aqui estou tranquilo, converso com os meninos como se conhecesse há anos. A torcida também apoia muito. A gente sabe que dependemos de resultado, eles querem ver a gente jogando bem, saindo com a vitória, mas estou adaptado a isso também.

Mudou muita coisa com a saída do Eduardo, com quem você chegou a ser titular, e a chegada do Cuca?
Os jogadores já conhecem o Cuca. O Eduardo teve um bom trabalho aqui, mas isso (demissão) acontece em todos os clubes do Brasil. O Cuca veio para fazer um bom trabalho e está se firmando. São trabalhos diferentes. Estamos vindo de resultados que não estão agradando, mas a confiança vai voltar e a gente vai conseguir embalar.

O que está achando dessas primeiras semanas de Cuca?
É um trabalho bom. Eu já acompanhava nos jogos do ano passado. Ele passa confiança para os jogadores, conversa, o que é muito importante. Ele conversou bastante comigo sobre aproveitar as oportunidades. Entrei contra o Inter, fui bem e conseguimos sair classificados.

Vai jogar contra o Galo?
Estou treinando, porque se ele precisar de mim vou ter que dar o meu melhor. O Dudu é um jogador importante, então se eu entrar vou ter que jogar bem.

Qual a diferença entre você e o Dudu?
O Dudu vem mais por dentro, eu gosto de ir mais para o fundo. Mas posso ir por dentro também, depende mais do jogo. Se estiver congestionado, como estava contra o Inter, com o meio muito cheio, ele manda ir para o fundo, com velocidade.

The opening pair put on 170, but Shahadat Hossain derailed the innings with three top-order wickets and the middle-order batsmen failed to regain the momentum, struggling against the left-arm spin of Mehrab Hossain jnr.Openers Divan van Wyk and Andre Seymore negotiated the Bangladeshi bowling with ease at the start – the two added 50 in 71 balls. van Wyk was the more confident one and contributed 38 to the fifty partnership. They ticked along at the same run-rate to the 150-run mark but Shahadat struck soon after. Seymore was the first one to go, caught for 75 in the 41st over, and only two more were added before Shahadat bowled new batsman Jonathan Beukes for 1.When van Wyk edged him to the keeper for 87, the hosts had lost three wickets for ten runs. Phil Smith has dropped a claim regarding the circumstances behind Leon Dajaku’s move to Sunderland. 

What’s the talk?

Sunderland reporter Smith has dished out the inside track on Union Berlin’s decision to send Dajaku on loan to the Black Cats.

The journalist has revealed that Union believe the youngster has potential to become a good player and did not send him out on loan due to issue with his quality or attitude.

He told The Roar Podcast, via This is Futbol: “They [Union Berlin] clearly feel that while it hasn’t quite worked out for him there yet, they obviously believe he’s a player of potential and who has future value.

“And from what I’ve heard, I don’t think it was necessarily a form issue or an attitude issue or anything like that from Berlin. It sounds like he just had a difficult time with a couple of niggling injuries. It sounds like he had a little bit of an illness at a bad time as well.

“So I don’t think it was one at all where they’re looking to rush him out the door. They think he’s a good player with a potential value, but they also just feel it is probably best for him to go somewhere where he might get regular minutes.”

Excitement

Sunderland fans will surely be excited by these claims from Smith. It shows that Union have not shipped him out to England because they do not think he is good enough, but rather that they believe that he has the potential to grow into a top player and needs the regular minutes which they cannot provide him in the Bundesliga.

The 20-year-old has made six appearances in the German top flight, with two apiece for Stuttgart, Bayern Munich and Union. This highlights the potential each of those clubs have seen in him, particularly at Bayern given their size and stature in the country.

Upon Dajaku’s arrival at the Stadium of Light, Johnson hailed him as a ‘top prospect’ and added that his attitude is exactly what he wants to see at the club.

The manager said: “Leon is a really interesting player – he’s a top prospect with good ability, agility and quality – so we are looking forward to adding him to the squad and working with him. He’s a hungry player that has shown a strong attitude and desire to come to Sunderland and grow with us, which is exactly what we want.”

This is why Sunderland fans should be excited by Union’s reasoning behind the loan deal for the £1.6m-rated forward. They seemingly expect him to enjoy a strong season in England to help him fulfil his potential, which could delight Black Cats fans who can now look forward to seeing him display his talents in League One.

Bringing in a promising young player who has already played top-flight football for Bayern is an excellent piece of business on paper for the Wearside club. It is now up to Dajaku to live up to the excitement and anticipation around him in the coming weeks.
