Kulusevski 2.0: Spurs in discussions to sign £50m Gibbs-White alternative

Tottenham Hotspur were gearing up to welcome Morgan Gibbs-White to Thomas Frank’s early-stage project, with Daniel Levy having overseen a £60m approach for the Nottingham Forest playmaker.

But he has since penned a new deal at the City Ground, with the Tricky Trees claiming Spurs made an illegal approach for the Three Lions star.

Nottingham Forest's MorganGibbs-Whitereacts after the match

He’s now sign a new deal at the City Ground. It’s a bitter pill to swallow after transfer guru Fabrizio Romano had placed his catchline, ‘Here we go”, on the move, signifying a done deal.

However, Spurs must now move forward, and Frank is assessing his options, with sights still set on a new midfield playmaker.

Spurs lining up Gibbs-White alternative

Gibbs-White would have been perfect for the Tottenham project. The succession of recent pre-season draws have illustrated the need for more spark in the midfield, and it’s something Frank is now placing emphasis on, having already signed Mohammed Kudus from West Ham United for a £55m fee.

Romano has confirmed that, while the Gibbs-White deal is dead, the Lilywhites have already started working on alternatives, saying: “They’re working on it [alternative targets for Gibbs-White. As soon as I know, I will tell you.”

Well, according to reporter Graeme Bailey, internal discussions have begun over the potential signing of Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott, who is expected to leave Anfield this summer due to a lack of playing time under Arne Slot.

Elliott, 22, would likely be open to the move, Champions League competitors as Tottenham are, and he would come in at a cheaper price than Gibbs-White, valued at £50m.

Why Spurs should sign Harvey Elliott

Having joined Liverpool from Fulham for a compensation fee of about £4m in 2019, aged only 16, Elliott has since established himself as a fixed part of the wider Reds squad, featuring 147 times and notching 35 goal contributions.

Harvey Elliott celebrates for Liverpool

Former Liverpool U18s head coach Neil Critchley said in the past that the England U21 superstar is able to produce “some real bits of magic” on the ball, and his ability to shift between the right flank and attacking midfield even suggests that he could bring shades of Dejan Kulusevski to Frank’s first-team squad.

Kulusevski, 25, played a crucial part in the Ange Postecoglou era, really coming into his own as an all-action central midfielder last season, having previously played out on the right.

He’s injured right now, but there’s no disputing how important he is to this Tottenham team, with Sofascore recording that he scored seven goals and supplied four assists in the Premier League last year, having also averaged 2.1 key passes and 4.1 successful duels per game.

Elliott lacks the Sweden international’s completeness, but he’s a veritable wizard across his areas of expertise, and would certainly add a ball-playing dimension that was targeted through the acquisition of Gibbs-White.

The left-footer’s ability to score goals and create chances aplenty offers shades of Kulusevski, though the Tottenham man has more of a full-throttle engine about him, Elliott’s technical skill is up there with the very best.

As per FBref, the Liverpool man ranked last season among the top 2% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe’s top five leagues for all of goals plus assists, passes attempted and progressive passes, as well as the top 15% for goal-creating actions per 90.

Considering the dimension it would add to Tottenham, Frank must take these internal discussions and push ahead with a formal approach for Liverpool’s talented prospect.

Not only would he be a dream Gibbs-White alternative, but he’d bring a sense of Kulusevski’s flair to the side.

Leeds now schedule meeting to discuss deal for "sensational" £22m+ attacker

Leeds United have now “scheduled” a meeting with a “sensational” attacker to discuss a move to Elland Road, journalist Sacha Tavolieri has revealed.

Leeds need to improve attacking options

Leeds’ Premier League opener at home to Everton is less than two weeks away, and while Daniel Farke has made major improvements to his squad, the only new attacker through the door is former Wolfsburg striker Lukas Nmecha.

As such, Farke should now consider improving his attacking options a priority, particularly considering the fact Mateo Joseph wants to leave, and the Whites have now joined the race for a striker, identifying Al-Hilal’s Aleksandar Mitrovic as a potential option.

Mitrovic could be an exciting addition, given that the Serbian is vastly experienced in the Premier League, scoring 14 goals in 24 games for Fulham in the 2022-23 campaign.

However, Leeds are also looking to bring in an attacking midfielder, capable of providing assists for their new striker, and they are in the race for Leicester City’s Bilal El-Khannouss, who has a release clause of £22.5m included in his contract.

There has now been a new update on the Whites’ El-Khannouss pursuit, with Tavolieri taking to X to reveal they have now “scheduled a meeting” with the Leicester attacking midfielder, which is due to take place “in the coming days”.

Crystal Palace could also make a move for the 21-year-old, with Selhurst Park potentially an attractive destination, given that they are set to take part in the UEFA Conference League, although playing in Europe is not thought to be a decisive factor in the player’s plans.

There has been a development in Palace’s pursuit of an attacker…

ByDominic Lund Aug 7, 2025 "Sensational" El Khannouss deserves another chance in the top flight

It was a difficult debut campaign in the Premier League for the Belgium-born maestro, with the Foxes being relegated, but he still managed to impress at times, chipping in with two goals and three assists.

Football scout Ben Mattinson believes the starlet could go on to achieve big things, lauding him as “sensational”, while also describing the Leicester attacker as “an all-rounder of a player capable of affecting the game from all over the pitch.”

Former Leicester manager Ruud van Nistelrooy also thinks the youngster could go on to be a top-level player, saying: “The challenge for him is, at his young age, pushing himself to finally know where his ceiling is. His potential is there to be a top player in Europe in the Champions League.”

As such, it could be a coup if Leeds were able to sign El-Khannouss, and the Moroccan could be a real difference-maker in their battle to avoid relegation.

Marsh ready to bowl as much as Cummins needs him against India

He expects to send down a few overs in the next Sheffield Shield match as part of a “slow build” to the Test series

Tristan Lavalette16-Oct-20241:26

How much will Australia miss Cameron Green?

Allrounder Mitchell Marsh will bowl in the upcoming Sheffield Shield round as he prepares to help cover Cameron Green’s absence during the India Test series.Marsh’s fitness and whether he can return to bowling have grown in significance for Australia since it emerged that Green will miss the entire season due to a stress fracture of his back.Green was heading to Christchurch on Wednesday for surgery and in an Instagram post said: “Heartbroken but let’s get a new back.”Related

Cummins to prepare for Test summer in Pakistan ODIs, Marsh and Head on paternity leave

Australia quicks' unbroken summer could be an 'outlier'

There has been uncertainty if Marsh, who turns 33 on Sunday, can physically handle the rigours of bowling. Since tearing his hamstring during the IPL, Marsh has bowled just four overs – all of which were in the fourth ODI against England at Lord’s last month.Marsh made 13 and 94 as a specialist batter for Western Australia in their drawn Shield opener last week against Queensland at the WACA. While in the field he was mostly based in the slips and and occasionally helped carry the drinks. But Marsh said he felt “really good” physically as he builds up his bowling loads against Tasmania in the Shield fixture starting on Sunday at the WACA.”I won’t bowl too much for WA, it’s all part of the building process to get ready for that first Test,” Marsh told reporters in Perth at the launch of the 2025-26 Ashes fixtures. “It’s been a slow build. I’ve been really well looked after by Cricket Australia, Ronnie [Australia coach Andrew McDonald] and Patty [Pat Cummins], with our planning and when I bowl.”I love bowling, so I’m looking forward to bowling for Western Australia this week and build from there.”Mitchell Marsh’s overs could be vital this summer•Getty Images

With Australia’s frontline pace attack unchanged last summer, and with Tests played on bowler-friendly surfaces, Marsh wasn’t greatly needed with the ball but still did produce several handy spells. There has been an expectation that the five-Test series against India will be more gruelling, magnifying the importance of Marsh being able to provide support. With Steven Smith to move back to No. 4, Australia’s selectors will likely call in an opener rather than a like-for like replacement for Green. Marsh moving to the top of the order, following in the footsteps of his father Geoff and brother Shaun, has some support, including from legendary Australia batter Greg Chappell. But Marsh dispelled the notion with his focus firmly on contributing as an allrounder and he did not put a cap on how many overs he could bowl in the Tests. “Once you’re in the field of battle, you bowl as many overs as the captain needs you to bowl,” he said.”I see the allrounder role as being really important, especially for when our bowlers need a bit of a break. I think if you look back at the last few seasons, our allrounders have bowled maybe 10 to 13 overs a game, which is not really a lot.”But those 10 to 13 overs can be really important. So for me, it’s about preparing to bowl as much as I can, as much as Patty needs me to.”Marsh said he was “shattered” for Green who is expected to be sidelined for six months.”From all reports he’s pretty good, initially there is always a shock. It all happened pretty quickly,” he said. “Certainly with stress fractures they can be quite a gradual thing, but this one came pretty quickly.”Someone like Cam with his attitude towards the game, he loves it. The thought of missing that much cricket is probably a little daunting for him, but he’s accepted it now and as an athlete you go through these things.”It’s an opportunity for him to come back better and I have no doubt that he will.”

An Afghanistan women’s cricket team, consisting of refugees who now live in Australia, will play a game in Melbourne in January, the first time they have been able to come together as a group since leaving their country following the Taliban takeover. The T20 match between an Afghanistan Women’s XI and a Cricket Without Borders XI will take place on January 30 at Junction Oval ahead of the opening day of the floodlit Women’s Ashes Test at the MCG.The players involved fled Afghanistan in 2021 when the Taliban came into power and now live in Canberra and Melbourne. Many play for local cricket clubs but have not been able to form themselves into a representative team. The Australian government has been involved in helping set up the match.”Many people across cricket and the community have come together to provide support for members of the Afghanistan women’s team since their relocation to Australia and this match will be a celebration of that work,” Cricket Australia chief executive Nick Hockley said.”I’m delighted that their ambition to play together will be achieved in this exhibition match which will be a wonderful addition to the many events around the Day/Night Women’s Ashes Test.”Earlier this year, 17 of the players who were contracted to the Afghanistan Cricket Board in 2020 prior to the Taliban takeover wrote to the ICC asking for assistance in setting up a refugee team in Australia.”Our goals in having a refugee team are to develop and showcase our talent, give hope to the women remaining in Afghanistan, and to draw attention to the challenges women of Afghanistan face,” the letter said. “Like the Afghanistan men’s team, we aim to compete at the highest levels. We want to recruit and train girls and women who love cricket to show the world the talent of Afghan women, and to demonstrate the great victories they can achieve if given a chance through the leadership and financial support of the ICC.”On Tuesday, CA announced a partnership with UNICEF Australia as part of the foundation’s “Until Every Girl Can Play” campaign aimed at gender equality.

Worse than Souttar: Martin must now drop 5/10 Rangers flop for UCL clash

Glasgow Rangers kicked off their Scottish Premiership season with disappointment, as they were held to a 1-1 draw away from Ibrox against Motherwell.

The Light Blues had the lead at Fir Park for most of the evening, thanks to an opener from James Tavernier, but Emmanuel Longelo’s crisp strike just before the end of the 90 minutes secured a draw for the home side.

Russell Martin will surely be gutted that his team were unable to see it out to claim all three points on the opening day, and may not have been too pleased with some of the performances from his players on the pitch.

One player who still looks to be adjusting to the drastic change in the style of play under the new head coach is central defender John Souttar, who does not look at home in a risk-taking defence.

John Souttar's performance against Motherwell

The rough and tumble Scottish brute is a physical defender who can dominate opposition attackers in one-on-one duels, and that was the case against Motherwell as he won two of his three ground duels and four of his five aerial contests.

Performance in Numbers

Want data and stats? Football FanCast’s Performance in Numbers series provides you with the latest match analysis from across Europe.

However, Souttar is tasked with defending large spaces because of the positions that the full-backs take up and the risks that Rangers take, and he does not have the mobility to deal with those situations consistently.

The Scotland international did make seven clearances, including one vital one in the six-yard box after Jack Butland spilled the ball, but he also made an error that directly led to a shot and was outpaced down Motherwell’s right flank one too many times.

John Souttar

Souttar was far from the only less-than-impressive performer on the park for Rangers, though, as Martin must drop Danilo for Tuesday night’s Champions League clash with Viktoria Plzen.

Why Rangers must drop Danilo

The Brazilian forward, who was awarded a 5/10 player rating by GlasgowWorld, was selected to lead the line ahead of Cyriel Dessers, whilst Hamza Igamane was unavailable due to injury.

Unfortunately, the former Feyenoord marksman was even worse than Souttar and should be ruthlessly dropped by Martin for the game against Viktoria Plzen.

Whilst Souttar offered strength defensively and made seven clearances to help his side out, Danilo had very few redeeming factors in his performance, as he struggled on and off the ball.

The Brazilian lightweight played 63 minutes and only contested one duel with the opposition centre-backs, which shows that he did not anticipate the game well enough, or show enough desire, to get stuck in for his team.

As you can see in the table above, Danilo also failed to register a single shot on target and did not create any ‘big chances’ for his side in his 63 minutes on the field.

This means that the 26-year-old striker was a liability in and out of possession, as he offered very little at the top end of the pitch and very little physically when Rangers did not have the ball.

Glasgow Rangers striker Danilo.

Therefore, Martin should ruthlessly ditch Danilo from the starting XI for the game on Tuesday night, as he has not done enough in the last three games, as a starter, to justify his continued inclusion.

ScorecardHarpreet Singh and Venkatesh Iyer’s big hits helped Madhya Pradesh chase down 174 against Saurashtra with four balls and six wickets to spare in Alur. MP entered their first Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy semi-final since 2010-11.Player of the Match Venkatesh ended on 38 not out off 33 deliveries with the bat, after taking 2 for 23 from three overs with the ball. Harpreet, on the other end, batted more aggressively in his nine-ball cameo to finish on 22 not out to seal the game for MP. But before they added 29 to wrap the chase, Arpit Gaud (42 off 29 balls), Subhranshu Senapati (24 from 16) and captain Rajat Patidar (28 off 18) kept MP on top. However, the fact that MP had as many to chase was thanks to Chirag Jani smashing an unbeaten 80 from 45 deliveries for Saurashtra. The next highest score from their batters was 17 – from both Harvik Desai and Jay Gohil. Jani clubbed eight fours and four sixes in his knock and helped Saurashtra get 45 runs off the last three overs. From 54 off 36 balls at one stage, he hit two fours and sixes each from the 18th over onwards. Gohil deposited two sixes as well during that time, but Saurashtra’s total of 173 didn’t prove enough.
