ANÁLISE: Com Abel Ferreira, Palmeiras exorciza a 'palmeirada'

Lanning believes final will come down to 'holding your nerve under pressure'

However, South Africa head coach Hilton Moreeng said “whoever wants it most will have it tomorrow”

Valkerie Baynes25-Feb-20234:01

Moonda: A World Cup win for South Africa at home will lift the nation

Meg Lanning broke into a knowing smile when it was put to her on the eve of her fifth T20 World Cup final as Australia captain that the team who wants it more will win the trophy.”I think it’d be pretty even in terms of how much each team wants to win, there’s no doubt about that,” Lanning said. “I personally think it comes down to holding your nerve under pressure and executing your skills as best you can when the pressure’s on. That’s where it’s going to be decided.”Related

Key match-ups at the Women's T20 World Cup final

It had been Hilton Moreeng, the South Africa head coach, who had suggested desire would prove crucial when trying to explain that his side needed no added motivation to switch from celebrating a surprise semi-final victory over England to take on the defending champions and overwhelming title favourites.”We know we’re playing against a tough opposition,” Moreeng said. “But as history has it, that is just history – tomorrow it’s a new day. So once again, whoever wants it most will have it tomorrow.”Both sides have had to prove that they can withstand intense pressure to reach the final – South Africa’s first at any senior cricket World Cup, men’s or women’s. Australia were pushed by India before prevailing by five runs while the hosts held their nerve, and their catches, to beat England by six runs. And Lanning believed that was a good thing. “The two semi-finals were incredible games,” she said. “Some high heart rates out there, on the field and off the field, and it would have been some incredible viewing for the fans out there. Hopefully, it’s the same again tomorrow. We’re expecting a very close game. There’s going to be moments of momentum with us and with South Africa as well, and it’s just about riding those waves and then when you get the opportunity to really put the foot down, we need to make sure we’re ready to take that.”I think we’ve got a little bit of improvement in us from the semi-final. We know the conditions now and what works, and our bowling group has been fantastic throughout the tournament. So we’ve planned, and we’re ready to execute as best we can, and I feel like if we can do that, then I have full belief that we’ll be able to get the job done.”Australia and South Africa met in a nerve-jangling semi-final at the last edition, with the hosts defying the Sydney rain to bat their 20 overs and then defend 97 runs off 13 overs after more showers intervened. Australia scraped through by five runs under the DLS method, and Lanning was player of the match for her 49 not out. Australia had also lost their opening match of their home tournament to India, so Lanning believes her side knows all about being put under pressure.

Followers in the US can watch the Women’s T20 World Cup final LIVE on ESPN+

But a side as mentally tough as Australia, with a proven track record in clinching matches – they are seeking a sixth T20 World Cup title in their seventh straight final appearance – will back themselves, even without the support of an 80,000-plus home crowd at the MCG. That’s despite going in with the weight of expectation on them and knowing that the nearly 13,000 fans expected at a sold-out Newlands will be overwhelmingly behind their opposition this time.”There’s pressure on everyone, it’s a World Cup final, there’s no guarantee,” Lanning said. “South Africa obviously are playing really good cricket, you know once you get to a World Cup final, you’ve beaten some good teams and you’re playing well, so that’s what we’re expecting tomorrow. They’re riding a wave of emotion as well, so we’re certainly prepared for that.”Six months ago, it was uncertain whether Lanning would be in South Africa after announcing that she was taking an indefinite break from cricket for personal reasons. That was after she had led Australia to the ODI World Cup title and the Commonwealth Games gold in 2022. On Saturday, she sounded like someone who had come full circle when asked about how it felt to be back now.”It’s really exciting, I can’t wait to get out and play, these are the games that you want to be involved in,” she said. “It’s just an exciting time for the team, World Cup finals, you have to make the most of them, you never know when your next chance might be, so I’m staying relaxed, enjoying the opportunity, really embracing it and everything that comes with it and I can’t wait to get out here and play in front of, hopefully, a packed crowd.”Whether they’re cheering for us or not, it doesn’t really matter, it’s just going to be an incredible atmosphere and event, and I can’t wait to get out there.”

Phil Salt leads Delhi Capitals' takedown of RCB

DC finally rise from the bottom after winning four of their last five games

Vishal Dikshit06-May-20233:08

Moody: Salt a brave player who doesn’t fear for his wicket

The Delhi Capitals’ batting might has turned up a little late in the tournament but they gave their home crowd a dazzling display of boundary hitting, the centerpiece of which was Phil Salt’s 87 off 45 balls, to finish off a chase of 182 against RCB with 20 balls to spare. After three ducks and only one score over 10 in his last five T20 innings, Salt sent five of his six sixes over the leg-side boundary during at assault that featured a lot of horizontal-bat shots. The Capitals chase got going with their first half-century opening stand of the season, and Salt kept attacking to bring the asking rate under six in almost no time. They raced to 70 in the powerplay, 115 at the halfway mark with Salt’s 28-ball fifty, before plundering 24 runs off a Harshal Patel over to reduce the chase to 32 off 42 balls.Salt was eventually bowled for 87 but his eight fours and six sixes helped Capitals beat RCB for the first time in three years. It was Capitals’ fourth win in their last five games, and lifted them off the bottom of the table.DC’s best powerplayThe Capitals chase was unlike any of their batting displays this season. David Warner began with two fours off the first three balls from Mohammed Siraj, before sweeping Wanindu Hasaranga’s first ball for six in the fourth over. In between, Salt took on Josh Hazlewood for two fours before a feisty fifth over from Siraj.Salt top-edged the first ball for six over the wicketkeeper, slapped the second one over cover and into the stands, and then flicked one bounce into the square-leg boundary. Siraj responded with a bouncer that was called wide and there followed a heated conversation between the bowler and the batter, and some animated finger-pointing from Siraj towards both Salt and Warner.Warner skied a catch off Hazlewood for 22 off 14 in the last over of the powerplay but Mitchell Marsh ended the over with a big six over midwicket and an edged four to power Capitals to 70 after six overs. They might not have got so much had Dinesh Karthik held on to a tough chance from Salt – an inside edge off Hasaranga – in the fourth over.It got heated between Phil Salt and Mohammed Siraj•Associated Press

Salt’s boundary bonanzaSalt was on 35 off 17 at the time and he threw his bat at anything wayward: wide balls disappeared over cover, short ones were pulled disdainfully, and a few edges also raced to the boundary.Marsh holed out off a full toss but the attack on RCB’s bowlers did not abate. Salt began the 13th over, from Harshal, with a six over the leg side and Rilee Rossouw smashed two more down the ground, before a misfield on the long-off boundary from Suyash Prabhudessai made it 24 runs off the over.Salt belted out two more boundaries before falling to Karn Sharma and Rossouw ended the game in the 17th over with his third six.Kohli and Du Plessis solid but not spectacularAfter RCB chose to bat on what was considered to be a slow pitch at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Virat Kohli started by playing nine dot balls in the first three overs, but also found the boundary in each of them.RCB got a boost when Faf du Plessis struck Mukesh Kumar for three fours in the fifth over before he hit Khaleel Ahmed for a straight six and a four to make it 51 from the powerplay.Marsh goes bang, bangKohli and du Plessis batted into the 11th over of the innings, when Marsh had du Plessis caught slapping a short and wide slower ball to deep point. He then had Glenn Maxwell caught first ball to reduce RCB to 82 for 2. Kohli was on 36 of 31 at the other end, and the run rate dipped slightly. Mahipal Lomror lifts RCBMahipal Lomror raised the tempo of RCB’s innings quickly. He pulled his fifth ball for six off Kuldeep Yadav, and used the reverse-sweep and the loft down the ground to find the boundary, before pulling Marsh for another six to lift the run rate over eight an over.Kohli, meanwhile, found short fine leg for 55 off 46 and RCB were 137 for 3 with four overs left. Lomror didn’t get a lot of support and ended up doing most of the hitting himself. His two fours off Ishant Sharma, an edge for four off Khaleel, along with Dinesh Karthik’s six helped RCB collect 29 runs from the 17th and 18th overs. Mukesh then nailed a few yorkers and Khaleel used his cutters to keep RCB to 15 off the last two. Kohli said he thought 181 was a good score during the innings break, but the Capitals ran down the target with ease.

Andre Russell, Chris Gayle, Shakib al Hasan and Mohammad Rizwan are among some of the most prominent players drafted in for the third edition of the Global T20 Canada. The league, which returns for the first time in four seasons, will be played between July 20 and August 6 in Ontario. The league has gone through something of a revamp since its last edition. Winnipeg Hawks, who won the league last time it was held, no longer take part, while Edmonton Royals are also absent. Their place is taken by Surrey Jaguars and Mississauga Panthers. Each side will include two marquee players and three Canadian players from the national side, as well as three emerging Canadian players, with 25 matches to be played across the 18 days. This means there will be two high-profile North American T20 franchise-based leagues this summer, after dates for the inaugural season of Major League Cricket, set to be played in Texas in July, were announced last month. The GT20’s return adds further strain on a cricketing calendar already groaning under the weight of several T20 leagues. It will clash with Pakistan’s two-Test series against Sri Lanka in July, with 14 Pakistan players picked up across the six franchises. The PCB has insisted that players chosen for the Test series will not go to the GC20.The first two seasons took place in 2018 and 2019, but following payment disputes and the Covid pandemic, a third edition wasn’t held in the next three years.Squads []:Surrey Jaguars: Alex Hales, Iftikhar Ahmed, Jason Behrendorff, Liton Das, Karim Janat, Mohammad Haris, Sandeep LamichaneMississauga Panthers: Shoaib Malik, Chris Gayle, Azam Khan, James Neesham, Cameron Delport, Shahnawaz Dahani, Tom CooperBrampton Wolves: Harbhajan Singh, Colin de Grandhomme, Tim Southee, Mark Chapman, Usama Mir, Hussain Talat, Usman Khan, Logan van Beek, Jan Nocolas Frylinck, Max O’DowdVancouver Knights: Mohammad Rizwan, Rassie van der Dussen, Naveen ul Haq, Reeze Hendricks, Corbin Bosch, Najibullah Zadran, Kartik Meiyappam, Ruben TrumpelmannMontreal Tigers: Shakib al Hasan, Andre Russell, Chris Lynn, Sherfane Rutherford, Carlos Brathwaite, Abbas Afridi, Zahir KhanToronto Nationals: Colin Munro, Shahid Afridi, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Zaman Khan, Saim Ayub, Abdullah Shafique, Gerhard Erasmus

Cricket Australia cut Lyon's Lancashire stint short

Off-spinner allowed to play seven of first nine Championship matches to manage workload ahead of Tests vs India

Cricket Australia have told Nathan Lyon that he will only be available to play half of Lancashire’s County Championship season and have blocked his plan to play white-ball cricket for them. Lyon was due to feature in all formats but CA want to manage his workload ahead of their home Test series against India at the end of this year.Lancashire announced on Wednesday that Lyon will only be allowed to play in seven of their first nine Championship fixtures. He is due to arrive in Manchester next week, ahead of their opening match against defending champions Surrey on April 5, and he will be available until their match against Nottinghamshire on July 3.Lyon is the second player that CA have pulled out of a county contract this month, after opting to block Aaron Hardie’s early-season deal with Surrey although Australia’s chairman of selectors George Bailey stated on Thursday that CA had not been the driver of Hardie’s decision.Related

The inside story of county cricket's most eye-catching transfers

“Naturally, we are disappointed that Nathan will no longer be joining us for the full 2024 season,” Mark Chilton, Lancashire’s director of cricket, said. “However, we are still incredibly excited to be able to welcome him for seven matches in the Vitality County Championship.”After speaking with Nathan since this decision was taken, I know that he is still really excited about joining up with us and remains very committed to Lancashire Cricket, supporting the group and helping us to achieve our goals this summer.”Bailey said that the Australian selection panel had sat down with Lyon during their recent scheduled contract meeting and discussed whether a full winter in England was in the 36-year-old’s best interest given he is set to play a huge role in five home Tests against India starting in November before Australia tour Sri Lanka in late January.”When we sat down with Nathan and sort of mapped out what the next 12, 18, 24 months looked like and just what we thought and eventually what he thought was in his best interests, he was still really excited he gets that opportunity, I think he’s in England until around July so he gets a great opportunity there,” Bailey said.”It’s still a really great outcome. But just that conversation of actually, every now and then lifting the player’s eyes and having them have a more longer-term look at what’s happening and making sure that they’re absolutely right to go when the Australian matches are there.”But it’s not something that we necessarily do [with every player]. I saw that it was reported that we’ve done the same for Aaron Hardie but that wasn’t the case. That was Aaron working through the opportunities that he’s got across those 12 months and coming to that conclusion himself.”Lyon’s move to Lancashire had already proved controversial, given the potential for his signing to block Tom Hartley’s opportunities in the County Championship. Brendon McCullum, England’s coach, said during their recent tour to India that it would be “slightly mad” if Hartley and Shoaib Bashir are not given the chance to continue their development this season.Hartley himself has already revealed his desire to become a genuine allrounder to boost his chances for inclusion, and his captain Keaton Jennings addressed the “really tough situation” on Tuesday’s Wisden Cricket Weekly podcast.”Even if Tommy had to miss out, the reality of the situation is it’s April, we’re in the UK and if it’s not going to turn as much, you’ve got arguably the best offspinner the game has seen. Tommy is going to learn a huge amount from that guy and Tommy is going to play a huge part in Lancs’ cricketing history,” Jennings said.”You see the quality he has produced on that Test match debut… it puts myself and Benks [head coach Dale Benkenstein] in a really tough situation. When we made the signing in August or September, you can’t foresee what’s going to happen in six months’ time. You’ve got such high quality available and you try and make the best decision you can.”Chilton said Lancashire are in talks to secure a replacement overseas player for the T20 Blast and One-Day Cup. “We are now assessing our options regarding overseas players and a number of discussions are currently taking place on that front,” he said.

Khushi, Browne have Essex eyeing first-innings lead

Essex 314 for 3 (Khushi 107, Browne 94*) trail Durham 358 by 44 runsA century by Feroze Khushi and Nick Browne’s unbeaten 94 enabled Essex to take control of their Vitality County Championship match against Durham at the Seat Unique Riverside.Replying to the home side’s 358, the First Division leaders were 314 for 3 at the close, leaving their side just 44 runs in arrears and perhaps laying the foundations for Essex’s third victory in four matches this season.Durham’s batters will have something to say about that, of course, on top of which this Riverside pitch is still good for batting and the weather forecast for Sunday is grim. But nothing should detract from the quality of Khushi’s chanceless century, the second of his career and his first since he reached three figures at Canterbury in 2022.And even when the 24-year-old had been dismissed by Callum Parkinson for 107, Browne shared an unbroken stand of 54 with Jordan Cox to leave his side well placed to take a first-innings lead.Related

The first wicket to fall in the morning session was that of the nightwatcher, Sam Cook, who was bowled by Paul Coughlin for 25 in the 19th over of the innings. By then, however, the stand-in Essex skipper had helped Dean Elgar put on 64 for the first wicket, a partnership which removed much of the shine from the new ball.Five minutes before lunch, however, Durham took the wicket they most wanted when Elgar’s loose drive outside the off stump to a ball from Matthew Potts edged a catch to Ollie Robinson. The opener’s dismissal for 46 left his side on 97 for 2 at lunch but Potts could reflect that he had been unfortunate not to get an lbw decision against the South African in the first half-hour of play, a period in which Ben Raine had also had two confident leg before appeals against Elgar turned down.In the afternoon session, Khushi and Browne carefully consolidated their side’s position with Khushi being especially quick to seize on anything loose, driving and pulling Brydon Carse to the boundary in the space of three balls. He reached his fifty off 102 balls when he off-drove Parkinson to the boundary and celebrated the achievement two deliveries later with a straight drive for four. The hundred partnership was put up in less than two hours and perhaps the most noticeable feature of the afternoon session was the ease with which the pair dealt with Durham’s six-man attack on a good batting pitch. Off-spinner Colin Ackermann bowled the last over before tea, at which point Essex were 220 for 2, with Khushi on 88 and Browne unbeaten on 46.The evening session continued much like the afternoon’s. Carse overpitched in the first over after the resumption and Khushi clipped him through midwicket for four to get into the nineties. A glance to fine leg two overs later and then a punch through midwicket off Ackermann took him to his hundred off 156 balls. He had batted 203 minutes and hit 16 fours.Ten minutes later, Browne reached his fifty off 143 balls via a slice of good fortune when an attempted off-drive to a ball from Ackermann only produced an edge between Robinson and first slip Coughlin. Liberated by that achievement, Browne took two successive fours off Ackermann but three overs later, Khushi drove Parkinson straight to Graham Clark at shortish extra cover and departed.Browne and new partner Cox soon had to face the challenge of the new ball but they did so with little fuss.
