Washington Sundar guides Lancashire home after Josh Bohannon's ton

Overseas signing grinds out final-day run chase to keep new side in title hunt

Surrey have not quite disappeared over the horizon as far as the Championship race is concerned. Lancashire are clinging on grimly thanks to a hard-earned four-wicket victory against Northants which was all the more redoubtable considering the disappointment around the club following their extraordinary last-ball defeat in the final of the Vitality Blast a few days earlier. That they saw things through when faced with an uncomfortable chase of 278 was primarily due to four players who were not part of the Edgbaston agony – Josh Bohannon and Tom Bailey with bat and ball respectively, and Washington Sundar – on his Lancashire debut – and Will Williams, who followed up decisive bowling returns with an unlikely alliance with the bat.Washington and Williams ground out an unbroken seventh-wicket stand of 69 in 27 overs to secure victory on the stroke of lunch. Washington, the India allrounder, has excellent batting pedigree, but Williams had only appeared at No. 7 as a second nightwatcher the previous evening and he stuck around with impressive obduracy as Lancashire, five down overnight, chipped away the last 86 runs they needed with efficiency and commonsense.Related

Bohannon rediscovers form to put Lancs within reach

Vasconcelos steps down as Northants captain after four months

Williams ends Canterbury career to sign up with Lancs as a local

“It’s been a great start for Washington, superb,” said Lancashire’s head coach Glen Chapple . “I’m really pleased for him. He’s been desperate to come over and play English cricket. He bowled superbly well in the first innings and played with assurance and quality.”The easy way for Lancashire to have won it would have been for Bohannon, 92 not out overnight, to reach his hundred and then embark on a series of confident blows. Bohannon reached his hundred, settling in by steering the first legitimate ball of the day, from Sanderson, to the third man boundary and, on 99, clipping Jack White just wide of the diving Emilio Gay at short midwicket. But he fell two balls later, seeking to run White behind square and picking out the diving Will Young, who pulled off a stunning one-handed catch at gully. He had not seen it through but once victory was secured, he could take pleasure not just in an overdue return to form but the knowledge that he had played the central innings in Lancashire’s victory. At 209 for 6, still 69 short, Lancashire looked vulnerable. Throughout the match, the pitch had offered bowlers of all types assistance and they responded grindingly. Williams was a picture of self-denial. He remained strokeless, on 2 not out, for the first 50 minutes of the day. But Ben Sanderson was more wayward than is his habit and his most stray offering, an inviting half-volley down the legside, finally drew Williams into a glanced boundary. Will Young, the New Zealand batter, has taken over the Championship captaincy after the resignation of Ricardo Vasconcelos after barely four months in charge. Vasconcelos himself was an emergency appointment after Adam Rossington left the club in pre-season in an argument about his fitness levels. Northants’ head coach John Sadler said that he thought “Young captained great this game,” which is a good thing because you wouldn’t want four in one season.Young put his faith in seam, even though the ball was also turning. Lancashire’s target had been trimmed to 53 before Simon Kerrigan’s left-arm spin was introduced, but he rarely looked dangerous, even if he did tempt Williams into a couple of failed square cuts. Rob Keogh soon joined him, but when the offspinner’s first ball turned so sharply that it was given as a wide, he was so mystified that he never looked as dangerous again.Northants took the new ball with 25 needed, but it only quickened Lancashire’s path to victory. Washington twice cut boundaries off Sanderson, so often Northants’ inspiration, but not today. All that was left was for Williams to middle a cut shot against Kerrigan, who had been given the new ball in a final gambit, and he did just that to cries of satisfaction from the Lancashire dressing-room balcony.

New Zealand’s loss will be Lancashire’s gain. Williams’ last decade has been spent in New Zealand with Canterbury, but he has a British passport and even though he initially joined Lancashire last month on a short-term overseas deal, he has since gone local. On this evidence, he is already ingrained into the squad. There again, you could observe the same about Washington. Short-term overseas signings are a necessary gamble for the counties these days, but they can be problematic. Some players come and go without quite remembering the names of half their teammates, or even caring, but Washington’s input with both bat and ball was a key factor in a victory that keeps Lancashire 31 points behind Surrey with four games remaining. They meet in the final match at Old Trafford in late September and Lancashire’s target is to get close enough to give the match relevance. They say the weather is always beautiful in Manchester at that time of year…

Kohli record 122*, Bhuvneshwar 5 for 4 flatten Afghanistan

Afghanistan wore a dazed look playing less than 24 hours after the heartbreak against Pakistan

Sidharth Monga08-Sep-2022

Virat Kohli is all smiles after ending the century drought•Associated Press

Even Virat Kohli was shocked it came in this format. One-thousand-twenty days and 83 international innings since he last scored a hundred, Kohli got his elusive No. 71 in a T20 international against Afghanistan in India’s final match of the Asia Cup. Given the opportunity to open the innings in the absence of the resting captain, Rohit Sharma, Kohli played a vintage innings, going from 10 off 10 to 50 off 32 and then scoring 63 off the last 21 balls he played. Bhuvneshwar Kumar then returned figures of 4-1-4-5 with each-way swing to leave Afghanistan reeling.Playing less than 24 hours after the heartbreak against Pakistan, Afghanistan wore a dazed look. They dropped three relatively easy catches, and looked like they had no response when Kohli went on the offensive. And Bhuvneshwar didn’t need to set batters up. Outswingers took edges, inswingers smashed the stumps, and slower balls were chipped to fielders.New opening pair takes time and then goes bang
The match started with the energy of a dead rubber. India made three changes, and it would have been tough for Afghanistan to get up and dust themselves in a match they didn’t have anything to play for. The first two overs went quietly by, but in the third KL Rahul began to push India’s intent. Kohli took apart Mujeeb Ur Rahman in the sixth, coming down the wicket and reaching the pitch of the ball to negate his mystery, and also employing the rare sweep. Soon he had overtaken Rahul. In the eighth over came a pivotal moment of the match: Kohli mis-hit a pull of Mohammad Nabi, but Ibrahim Zadran misjudged the space behind him, ending up going one-handed and tapping the ball over the boundary.Rahul falls but Kohli keeps accelerating
Rahul tried to push the scoring rate up, followed in Kohli’s steps with a fifty and just when he was looking dangerous and poised for his typical steep acceleration, he mistimed a pull down the ground for a catch to long-on. Suryakumar Yadav began with a six first ball but played on the second ball. Rishabh Pant then struggled to get going.Bhuvneshwar Kumar celebrates Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s wicket•AFP/Getty Images

At the other end, Kohli was now into the death overs, still fresh and his eye in. This is where he gets dangerous in T20 cricket. This is a phase he has been trying to get into in T20 cricket for a while, but he has not been able to.Kohli then unleashed punishment on Afghanistan. He gave Rashid Khan the charge and hit a six, which is not easy to do. Then the left-arm quicks Fareed Ahmad and Fazalhaq Farooqi were taken apart. The hundred came with a flat six via a pull to a short-of-a-length delivery. He then kissed his wedding ring to acknowledge the support and love of the person who showed him perspective during this century drought, his wife Anushka. In the final over, it looked like Kohli was just showing off. There was a charge and a flick for a six, a no-look pull for a six, and then the extra-cover drive along the ground for four.Bhuvneshwar runs through the batting
Things were only about to go worse for Afghanistan. Bhuvneshwar’s fourth ball was the perfect delivery: pitching on leg stump, swinging against the angle, hitting Hazratullah Zazai in front of leg stumps and would have gone on to hit leg stump. Two balls later, he swung the ball the other way and went through the gate Rahmanullah Gurbaz presented. In his second over, Bhuvneshwar produced the outswinger-inswinger trick again. Karim Janat edged to slip, and Najibullah Zadran was late on an inswinger, trapped right in front.Bowling four on the trot, Bhuvneshwar had Azmatullah Omarzai chip a slower ball straight to short cover. The five-for reduced Afghanistan to 21 for 6.Ibrahim then scored a fifty but that was only delaying the inevitable.

21 y/o forward now set for Hull City medical as Selles goes into overdrive

It has been a very busy January for Hull City, and with a week left in the window, it doesn’t look like it’s going to get any quieter, as an “incredible” player is set for a medical as he is poised to join the Tigers, according to a reporter.

Hull City January signings

Ruben Selles joined the Championship side at the beginning of December, and he has been given the task of getting Hull out of the relegation zone and further up the Championship table. It has been an inconsistent period for the Tigers, but a 3-0 win over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane last time out is surely the highlight of their campaign so far.

There is still a lot of work to do for Hull to be firmly away from the bottom three, and Selles can obviously see that, as he’s brought in six new players this month. One signing the Tigers made was bringing Joe Gelhardt on loan for the remainder of the campaign from Leeds United. Hull have also added Lincoln on loan from Turkish giants Fenerbahce and have made the permanent additions of Kyle Joseph and Matt Crooks from Blackpool and Real Salt Lake, respectively.

Nordin Amrabat also joined the Championship side on a free transfer, and their latest capture is midfielder Eliot Matazo, who has joined on a three-and-a-half-year deal from AS Monaco. After signing for Hull, Matazo spoke of his delight at joining the club. He said: “It’s a very ambitious project with great ideas, and I’m also a very ambitious person. We match together.”

21 y/o forward now set for Hull City medical

The Tigers are not stopping at six signings, as according to BBC Radio Humberside journalist James Hoggarth, Louie Barry is set to undergo a medical at Hull City before joining on a loan deal from Aston Villa.

The 21-year-old, who has been dubbed “incredible” by England midfielder Declan Rice, spent the first half of this season on loan at League One side Stockport County, where he scored 15 goals in 23 league appearances. This was his second spell at Stockport, as he was their last season, helping the club get promoted from League Two.

Barry’s form in League One impressed his parent club, and they decided to trigger their option to bring the player back to Villa Park with the idea of sending him back out on loan to a higher division. It’s been unclear where the forward could go, as Leeds, Celtic, and Middlesbrough have all been credited with an interest in signing Barry, but Hull appear to have won the race.

Barry’s ability to play anywhere across the front and his eye for not only goals but creating chances, means he will bring an added quality to Hull’s attack that they have missed all season. Barry’s arrival will see him fight with the likes of Abu Kamara, Liam Miller, and Dogukan Sinik for a starting spot in the wide areas.

David Lloyd 313 not out makes more towering history for Glamorgan

Highest score ever made by a Welshman leaves Derbyshire facing a long haul to safety

ECB Reporters Network21-Sep-2022

David Lloyd scored an unbeaten triple-century•Getty Images

Glamorgan captain David Lloyd got the highest-ever first-class score by a Welshman of 313 not out to put his side in control against Derbyshire. They declared on a massive 550 for 5, and Lloyd’s day got even better as New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel and the Welsh County bowlers reduced Derbyshire to 135 for 5 at the close, still 415 behind. The records kept falling for Glamorgan and Lloyd. The second highest score by a Glamorgan player, behind Sam Northeast’s 410 against Leicestershire earlier this season, making it the first time that two players at the same county had registered quadruple and triple centuries in the same season. It was also the highest score for a Glamorgan captain, while things went from bad to worse for opposite number Ben Godleman. He followed up the decision to insert Glamorgan with a duck opening the batting to set the tone for his side.North Wales-born Lloyd started the day with a double century to his name, but plenty of landmarks ahead of him. He lost overnight partner Billy Root and Chris Cooke relatively early, but then found a solid associate in Andrew Salter.First the 30-year-old went past the 233 scored by Hugh Morris, now the county’s chief executive, as captain. He was dropped by substitute Nafis Shaikh from a top-edged sweep, a simple enough chance, when on 258 off the bowling of Alex Thomson.Next up was Mike Powell’s 299, the highest first class score by a Welsh-born player. A six off Thomson took him past that and the 300 mark. Then Steve James’ 309, the highest Glamorgan score until this season, was in his sights. When he reached 313 not out, off 398 balls, equalling the highest individual score at Sophia Gardens, scored by South African Jimmy Cook, Lloyd decided to call it a day and declared.Salter finished unbeaten on 45, his highest score of the season on being recalled to the team, their unbeaten partnership worth 151, Lloyd also enjoying a double-century partnership with Root and a century partnership with Tom Bevan.Derbyshire’s bowling figures were not pretty, for instance Thomson conceding 174 runs off his 41.2 overs.Derbyshire started batting knowing they required more than 400 to save the follow-on with Godleman in poor form and not lasting long before edging Michael Hogan to Patel at third slip.Brooke Guest flourished briefly before becoming Patel’s first victim bowling, while Wayne Madsen went next ball – meaning his number of career ducks for Derbyshire, 35, edged past the number of career centuries, 34.Leus du Plooy edged behind off Timm van der Gugten, while at the other end Luis Reece seemed to be playing a different set of bowlers reaching his half century out of the first 63 runs scored. However the introduction of Salter, turning the ball away from the left hander, did for Reece, caught behind for 56 as Derbyshire slumped to 75 for 5 just after tea.Harry Came, 21 not out, and Anuj Dal, 40 not out, steadied the ship and saw out the rest of the session, but their side still have a tough task over the two remaining days if they are to save the game.

Nottingham Forest make £30m+ bid to sign new Real Madrid "beast" for Nuno

Nottingham Forest have now reportedly made a bold move to bolster their ranks ahead of the 2025/26 campaign with a bid already having gone in for one future star to join Nuno Espírito Santo’s revolution at the City Ground, it has been claimed.

Nottingham Forest on course for Europe

In what is likely to be the shock of the Premier League season, Nottingham Forest are on course to qualify for Champions League football next campaign if they are able to carry their form into the final part of the season.

Nottingham Forest keen on signing "exceptional" £30m Premier League player

The Tricky Trees still hold an active interest in a player they targeted last summer.

As it stands, the City Ground outfit sit third in the top flight, just three points behind Arsenal and four points clear of Chelsea, while they have a further two-point cushion to Manchester City and Newcastle United in fifth and sixth place respectively.

With Champions League football likely to be available for the top five finishers, the Garibaldi are in an excellent position to qualify but opted not to strengthen in January in a bid to try and bolster that hope despite links to Matheus Cunha and Yoane Wissa.

Earlier in the month, John Percy revealed that owner “[Evangelos] Marinakis did make it clear that funds were available” in January but that Nuno opted to continue with his smaller squad rather than risk making a mistake in the winter market.

Those funds are also likely to be there in the summer as Forest look to continue their ascent up the Football League to challenge for major honours once more under the stewardship of the Greek owner, and now an idea of their ambition may have just been provided.

Nottingham Forest make £30m+ bid for defender

That comes as a report in Spain claims that Forest have tabled a €40m (£32m) bid to sign Real Madrid sensation Raul Asencio after he shot to prominence this season.

The Garibaldi have enjoyed an excellent defensive partnership at the City Ground after adding Nikola Milenkovic to their ranks over the summer, and their 27 goals conceded is a key reason behind their success this season.

However, they seem keen to bolster their ranks further, with the report claiming that the 21-year-old Spaniard has caught their eye, with his performance in the Madrid derby seeing him hailed a “beast” by Rising Stars.

Indeed, it is claimed that Forest have tabled a “concrete and ambitious offer” and “are willing to pay 40 million euros” to sign the 21-year-old centre-back.

It is added that Real Madrid are yet to reply to the offer and “have not made a definitive decision on the player’s future” as they weigh up offering him a new contract in the Spanish capital.

If Forest are able to pull off a deal to sign one of Real Madrid’s most promising youngsters and a Los Blancos academy graduate, it would represent quite the coup and only serve to continue the rapid upward trajectory of the City Ground side.
