Fulham now considering offer to sign "dominant" gem they’re captivated by

Still looking to welcome their first signing of 2025, Fulham are now reportedly considering a first offer to sign a 20-year-old defender who they’ve been captivated by this season.

Fulham transfer news

Much of the Cottagers’ transfer window has been centred around the future of Andreas Pereira amid links to Brazilian club Fluminense. It looked as though the attacking midfielder was edging closer and closer to a departure before Marco Silva poured cold water on the rumours.

Andreas Pereira for Fulham.

The Fulham boss told reporters: “Completely false. Normally I don’t speak about this type of situation, but I think it’s a moment for us to be clear: it’s completely false that there was an increased offer or something like that.

“I spoke with the board yesterday – and completely zero. We are a bit surprised at how this news has come from nowhere. What we can control is ourselves and our work and what we can do.”

Marco Silva now personally wants Fulham to sign "strong" £42m midfielder

He’s Premier League proven…

ByTom Cunningham Jan 9, 2025

With that said and the midfielder seemingly set to stay put, those at Craven Cottage have the chance to turn their attention towards potential incomings. According to Africa Foot as relayed by Sport Witness, Fulham are now considering an offer to sign Ousmane Diao from Midtjylland having been captivated by the young defender’s performances.

Potentially valued at over €4m (£3m) by the Danish club, Fulham will have to spend if they are to welcome their first signing of the January transfer window. Still just 20 years old too, that £3m+ valuation could quickly turn into a bargain deal in years to come.

Given that Issa Diop was the only centre-back to make Silva’s bench in a 3-2 defeat against West Ham United, welcoming further depth in that role certainly wouldn’t be a bad idea, especially if Fulham have their sights set on shock European qualification this season.

"Dominant" Diao is one to watch

When looking at Fulham’s defensive options, what they lack is a young prospect to eventually play an important role. As things stand, it’s the more established options in Calvin Bassey, Joachim Andersen and Diop taking centre-stage, but there’s certainly room for a younger player to arrive and make his mark to hand Silva a welcomed boost within his backline.

Dubbed a “complete and dominant” centre-back by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, Diao is certainly one to watch for the rest of the season and beyond, especially if Fulham make their move.

As an established Premier League side these days, Fulham are better placed than they have been for a long time to swoop in and welcome impressive young talents of Diao’s calibre. And with that in mind, they should be an interesting side to watch in the coming weeks.

Nathan Ellis keeps his cool – twice – to seal one-run thriller for Hampshire

No-ball on what would have been the last delivery halts celebrations but bowler holds his nerve

It’s only right to begin at the end, especially when the end came twice. With four required for a Lancashire victory on account of equalling Hampshire’s 152 by having lost seven wickets, Nathan Ellis bowled Richard Gleeson with a yorker and set off for the kind of celebratory run which requires a search party to get them back. This time all it took was the outstretched arm of standing umpire Graham Lloyd.Ellis had overstepped. Enough to have piqued the television umpire’s interest and fractionally so that a few looks were required, by which time the fireworks had been set off and stumps ripped out of the ground. And so the players reset, though not before picking their jaws up off the floor and putting their eyes back it. Quite how anyone continued, even for one more ball, was a testament to the manner in which these professionals can switch on and off in the blink of an eye.Especially Ellis, who went back to the top of his mark and, once the smoke had dissipated, delivered again, this time pulling back his length and bowling a slower ball. Gleeson wafted through to the keeper, by which time Tom Hartley had set off to run the first bye. He’d made it by the time wicketkeeper Ben McDermott broke the stumps at the striker’s end. Gleeson then set off for a second run, which Hartley only twigged when he saw his partner running back up towards him. By then, McDermott had set off to the non-striker’s end, which had already been broken by Mason Crane. Supposedly the ball was called dead once the first set of stumps had been broken, something which Lancashire will no doubt contest well beyond tomorrow. All that we know for certain is Hampshire have won their third Vitality Blast in 20 years. In many ways, how else could a successful 2022 Blast campaign have panned out for Hampshire? From the start, it has been one of coming back from the brink: overcoming a start of four defeats in a row to win 11 out of 12 to reach this final. At the halfway stage, they figured they were about 25 to 30 short with their 152. A few hours earlier, Lancashire had chased down 205 in their semi-final against Yorkshire, with eight balls to spare, no less. This? Surely no bother. But Hampshire clawed back from 72 for 1 in the eighth over, then from needing to prevent 11 from the final seven deliveries. And then back from the brink of their own jubilation and, of course, from the very real possibility of what might have been one of the most outrageous about-turns in the history of this format. Heck, maybe even sport itself. As the mural in their players’ dining room states, underneath a photo of Australian and Hampshire legend Shane Warne: “Never give up. Just absolutely never give up.” Well, they didn’t.James Vince celebrates victory with Liam Dawson•Getty Images

Lancashire dictated terms throughout the opening innings, characterised by a punchy yet crafty spell of 4 for 26 from Matt Parkinson. It began with the dismissal of the competition’s leading run scorer James Vince (five) inside the second over, off stump knocked back by a sharp, straightening delivery from Richard Gleeson, to put the onus on his partner McDermott. The Australian assumed it well, striking 30 of the powerplay’s 48 runs off just 17 deliveries, then doing everything within his power to shift the scoreboard along, all while he had more changes of partner than a bride at her Cèilidh. In the 11th over, he took the silencer off and carted Luke Wells for 21 runs, including a six into the Hollies Stand and another over long off. What impetus there was at the end of that blitz, with 90 for 4 and nine overs remaining, was ripped out by a delivery from Parkinson at the start of the next over which carried on into McDermott and bowled him, leg stump. The right-hander dragged himself off, clearly irate he was coaxed into playing for turn away from him, and perhaps also wondering who would be the one to step up and fill the void he left. After all, of the 11 boundaries struck up to 11.1 overs, all but one – a four over extra cover by Joe Weatherley – came off his bat.Ultimately, the answer was no one. Well, not really, anyway. Hampshire only managed two more fours and two more sixes as Dane Vilas stuck to tried-and-tested death plans with Gleeson, Hartley, Luke Wood and Danny Lamb sharing the last five overs between them, for 40 runs. The start to the chase was all action. Phil Salt, pumped from starting off with a swiped four and then a slog-swept six – sandwiching a front-foot no ball from Chris Wood – mistimed to three-quarters square leg where Tom Prest rushed in to take an excellent catch. In walked 37-year-old Steven Croft, the sole survivor from Lancashire’s 2015 success – besting Hampshire in the semi-final – and no backward step was taken. Four consecutive fours from the veteran, off Brad Wheal’s second over, eventually led to a powerplay of 60 which afforded the batting side some breathing room.Related

Tom Prest half-century carries Hampshire to final

They would certainly need it. Mason Crane removed Croft (36) – a fortuitous caught-behind as Croft attempted to swipe down the leg side and scuffed into the midriff of McDermott – and then Keaton Jennings (24), fresh from 75 in the semi-final with Yorkshire, lifted Liam Dawson to long off in the space of seven deliveries.A remaining equation of 76 more to get out of 68 balls still favoured Lancashire, especially with Vilas at the crease. By no means as fluent as his 63 not out hours earlier, a six deliberately sliced over third man suggested he was getting his eye in. It also brought the hundred up at the end of the 12th over, but that satisfaction was tempered when Vilas fell in the 13th, failing to hit over his opposing captain Vince at cover for Dawson’s second. Then came the turning point that wasn’t – or was, depending on your allegiances and views on fate. Crane seemed to have trapped Wells lbw, given out by umpire Millns. The left-hander seemed resigned to his fate but rolled the dice with a review and came up big. Ball tracking showed a predicted path beyond leg stump, even hinting that Crane sent down a googly, leaving the leg spinner and his teammates utterly bemused as they watched the big screen.Even as the great Australian hype Tim David came and went for 8, this time Hampshire ending up on the right side of a review to a plumb lbw off James Fuller. And so the continued presence of Wells carried greater importance as the game stepped further into the death.Wells was on strike for the start of the penultimate over against Wood, with a seemingly improbable 23 required. With one ball left in the 19th, that had come back down to 11 thanks to a six lifted over deep backward square leg, a four carved through midwicket and then a heart-stopping skier which inexplicably landed between McDermott and Wheal at short fine leg.Just as it looked like the gods were smiling on Wells and Lancashire, a tip-and-run to obtain the strike for the final over resulted in disaster. Vince gathered perfectly, set himself and threw down the stumps at the non-striker’s from cover. Given how things panned out, the value of the run saved was as integral as the man dismissed.Luke Wells is run out by James Vince•Getty Images

Four runs from the first three of the 20th and a perfect under-arm run out of Wood from McDermott meant the unlikely sources of Hartley and Gleeson had to try and find four from the final two without being dismissed to win. Even with their unlikely do-over, they fell one short. However you decide to square all this, whether of Hampshire, Lancashire or neutral, you’ll be in no doubt of the glory of this game. At a time when the Vitality Blast has found itself as a prop for an ongoing culture war within English cricket, there was something quite beautiful in the fact it had a true hall-of-fame moment, at the end of what was the perfect example of the light and shade, boom and bust, rhythm and blues of Twenty20 cricket. Next time they talk about whether the Vitality Blast is really all that, tell them the 2022 final sent you.

Series – and T20 World Cup spots – on the line as West Indies vs India goes to Florida for the weekend

India will risk playing Rohit Sharma only if he is 100% ready, while West Indies could look at bringing in Odean Smith for Devon Thomas

Takeaways from 3rd T20I: Hardik is India’s best option against left-hand batters

Big pictureIt has been 12 years since cricket officially and formally made it to the USA, with a weekend of two T20Is between New Zealand and Sri Lanka. For various reasons, though, Florida hasn’t yet emerged as the cricket destination the administrators would have expected it to. This weekend’s two matches between West Indies and India will make it only 12 matches played between Full Members there.Related

However, if the two teams can put on the kind of entertainment they did six years ago – when 245 batting first played 244 in the chase – it will go some way towards establishing Florida as a cricketing outpost. These two are the ideal teams to draw crowds in, what with the high number of immigrants from their parts of the world in America’s Sunshine State. For the two teams, these matches could well be the last look they get before they name their squads for the T20 World Cup in Australia. So it will be a good test for Arshdeep Singh and R Ashwin, on a small ground, to stake their claims for the back-up spots.West Indies know their best combination less well. The wizards of T20 cricket have to play the qualifiers at the World Cup. Who knows if Andre Russell will be fit and if Sunil Narine will be picked. For various reasons, Sheldon Cottrell, Fabian Allen and Evin Lewis are also missing the games against India. With the series on the line, this is a good opportunity for the fringe players to push into the squad.Form guideWest Indies LWLWW (last five matches, most recent first)

Players to watchDeepak Hooda has not set a foot wrong this year, but he still can’t force his way into the first-choice XI for India when everybody is available. However, he still has time to force his way into the squad, and into the XI should one of the batters struggle in the World Cup.Nicholas Pooran, the most established T20 batter in the West Indies line-up, struggled to score at a-run-a-ball against the cutters of Hardik Pandya and the offspin of Ashwin in the third T20I. He will have to face more of it if there is any grip in the pitch, and he will have to find a way.Team newsA lot of focus will be on Rohit Sharma’s fitness after he retired hurt with back spasms in the third T20I. He has missed more matches than he has played since assuming full-time captaincy, and India will not want to risk a serious injury so close to the World Cup. He will play only if fully confident of his fitness. On the bowling front, India could go full-strength by picking Harshal Patel over Avesh Khan, who has not had the best of series.India 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Suryakumar Yadav, 3 Shreyas Iyer, 4 Rishabh Pant (wk), 5 Hardik Pandya, 6 Dinesh Karthik, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Harshal Patel, 9 R Ashwin, 10 Yuzvendra Chahal, 11 Arshdeep SinghA bowling allrounder in Dominic Drakes instead of a batting allrounder in Odean Smith is the composition West Indies are likely to stick with. They could, however, bring in Smith for wicketkeeper Devon Thomas, with Pooran donning the big gloves.West Indies 1 Kyle Mayers, 2 Brandon King, 3 Nicholas Pooran (capt), 4 Shimron Hetmyer, 5 Rovman Powell, 6 Devon Thomas (wk), 7 Jason Holder, 8 Akeal Hosein, 9 Dominic Drakes, 10 Alzarri Joseph, 11 Obed McCoyDeepak Hooda hasn’t got many chances with the bat in this series, and will be keen to get a good hit•Associated Press

Pitch and conditionsThe pitch can be an unknown at venues not used to hosting international cricket regularly, but the boundaries are small and there should be good value for shots. There is no big threat to the matches except for the odd passing shower.Stats and trivia The last time West Indies beat India in any series was at the same ground in 2016 when they won the two-T20I series 1-0 with one match washed out. Take out the series in Sri Lanka when India’s third-string side was further weakened by a Covid-19 outbreak, and the last time India lost a bilateral T20I series was way back in early 2019 against Australia.

Their answer to Isak: £70m "monster" has now said yes to joining Arsenal

Arsenal’s problems have been laid bare over the last few weeks and if they are going to end the season as Premier League champions, they need to sign a few players this month.

Against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup, Mikel Arteta’s men were left to bemoan some awful finishing from Kai Havertz who notably glanced an effort off his shoulder wide of the goal from a few yards out.

It was Havertz again in the FA Cup a week ago, skying the ball over the bar when it looked easier to score, while they were nearly left to rue some poor finishing against Spurs in the north London derby. They did, at least, come through that one.

However, just when you think they’ve found their mojo again, going 2-0 up against Aston Villa, the result was taken away from them after some uncharacteristically bad defending.

Still, bolstering the forward ranks should remain the number one priority this month.

Arsenal's plans to sign a new striker

The man who everyone wants right now is Alexander Isak. The Newcastle forward is one of the most in-form centre forwards on the planet, scoring 11 goals in his last ten matches in all competitions.

He’s been regularly linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium but with the Toon slapping a £150m asking price on him, any move is incredibly unlikely.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Alternatives are required, therefore, and in Benjamin Sesko – a man described as the “new Erling Haaland” by scout Jacek Kulig, they may have their man.

Sesko was the subject of interest from the Gunners over the summer but ultimately signed a new contract with German club RB Leipzig. A move in 2025 feels more likely but will it be done in January or the summer?

Well, according to the Sun, Arsenal are now weighing up a massive £70m bid for the striker this month as Arteta aims to bolster his side.

The Mirror also goes as far as to suggest he’s ‘already said yes’ to joining the Gunners, with a willingness now on the player’s side to move.

Why Benjamin Sesko could be Arsenal's very own Alexander Isak

In January 2022, Arsenal were reportedly looking at a move for Isak, who was playing for Real Sociedad at the time.

Boasting a release clause of £75m, the Gunners thought it sat above his market value and instead, they ignored a move and preferred other options.

Alexander Isak

Just a few months later he moved to St James’ Park in a deal worth around £63m and since then, it’s safe to say Arteta and Co will be regretting their decision not to shell out.

While at the time Isak was hardly prolific, scoring 11 in 29 matches the season prior to moving to England, he has blossomed into one of the most feared forwards on the planet, finding the net 17 times in 24 games in 2024/25.

At the time of the move, the exciting Swede was just 22 years of age. He is now 25. Coincidentally, Sesko will be 22 by the time the summer window arrives. He’s also performing better at a similar age, suggesting that in a few years time, he could live up to the rave reviews he’s being given.

Described as a “monster” by data analyst Ben Mattinson, this is a player who if you invest in now, has a high chance of turning into something incredibly special.

He’s at the point in his career – as Isak was when Arsenal rejected him – that he’s still learning his craft but he’s showing traits that would tick a lot of boxes for Arteta.

The Slovenian is tall, he’s strong and he’s one of the most incredible strikers of a ball in European football. Just look at the goal below.

So, how did Sesko compare to Isak at a similar age? We’ve compared the Newcastle star’s 2021/22 season with the RB Leipzig striker’s current campaign.

So, it’s an interesting set of data with Sesko confidently the more prolific player when they were at the same point in their career.

Isak does appear to be the more creative and is likely to beat a man with greater regularity but the fact that the Slovenia international is already such a brute in the air and boasts immense physicality, makes him look as though he could be tailor-made for the Premier League.

Benjamin Sesko scores for Slovenia

He is no doubt still incredibly raw but Arsenal must learn from their lesson of not advancing with a move to sign Newcastle’s star man a few years ago. They were made to pay the price then and must not pass up on Sesko.

Arsenal struck gold on "unplayable" star who’s worth way more than Mbeumo

The January transfer window has been open for over three weeks now, and much to their fans’ dismay, Arsenal are yet to make a signing.

The North Londoners’ season is hanging by a thread as they are out of the FA Cup, almost out of the League Cup, and it looks like they could fall away in the Premier League.

Add to that the fact that Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus are out with long-term injuries, and it’s impossible to deny Mikel Arteta’s need for attacking reinforcements.

Now, in their defence, it does appear as if the club are trying to do something, as there have been near-constant reports linking them to forwards such as Benjamin Šeško and Matheus Cunha, but it could be argued their greatest area of need is off the right.

Interestingly, the title chasers have already been linked with Bryan Mbeumo this month, who’d be an ideal transfer for this position, but it remains to be seen if that’s a deal that can be done, although, if it is, the Brentford ace would still be worth millions less than one of Arsenal’s other frontline options.

Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo

Why Arsenal should sign Mbeumo

So, it was only last week that Arsenal were linked with a move for Mbeumo that could cost up to £50m, and while that is undoubtedly a lot of money, we reckon it would be more than worth it.

For example, in just 27 appearances for Brentford last season, totalling 2079 minutes, the 25-year-old dynamo racked up a tally of nine goals and six assists, which comes to an impressive average of a goal involvement every 1.8 games, or every 138.6 minutes.

The former Troyes star has somehow done even better this season, racking up a haul of 13 goals and four assists in just 26 appearances totalling 2137 minutes.

That means the sensational Cameroonian is currently averaging a goal involvement every 1.52 games or every 125.7 minutes, which is incredible for a winger not playing for one of the ‘big six’.

Moreover, he’s not just stat padding against weaker opposition either; so far this season, the Avallon-born sharpshooter has scored or assisted a goal against Newcastle United, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

In short, Mbeumo has more than proven he’s worth £50m or more this season and should be a top target for Arsenal, although one of his potential teammates who’s not had quite as successful a campaign would still be worth millions more.

The Arsenal star worth millions more than Mbeumo

So, to get straight to the point, the Arsenal star in question is none other than Brazilian left-winger Gabriel Martinelli.

The 23-year-old joined the Gunner from then-fourth-tier Brazilian outfit Ituano in the summer of 2019 for a fee of £6m, which now looks like an incredible bargain as Football Transfers value him at up to a staggering €77m, which is about £65m, or £15m more than Mbeumo would cost.

That is an enormous sum of money, and while there might be more than a few of you who’d dispute it, there are some reasons behind it.

First, while he’s not had the best year and a half, the Guarulhos-born talent has remained reasonably effective.

For example, in 20 league appearances this season, he has scored six goals and provided two assists, while Chelsea’s Pedro Neto, who cost £54m in the summer, has scored once and provided two assists in 19 league games.

Moreover, when he’s at his best, he’s sublime, as in the 22/23 campaign, the “unplayable” winger, as described by pundit Owen Hargreaves, scored 15 goals and provided six assists in 46 appearances, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.85 games.

Finally, while he’s not a young player anymore, there is still time for him to rediscover his best form and potentially do even better.

Ultimately, Arsenal should be doing all they can to sign Mbeumo this month, but fans should not forget that in Martinelli, they have a winger with the raw ability to be something special.
