Victoria's lower-order secure two-wicket win to put Shield final in sight

Mitch Perry and Todd Murphy added an unbroken 47 after Tasmania threatened to turn the game

Victoria have one foot in the Sheffield Shield final after a tense and potentially pivotal two-wicket win over Tasmania in Melbourne.A see-sawing final day at Junction Oval ended in Victoria’s favour thanks to a 47-run unbeaten tail-end partnership between 21-year-old Mitchell Perry and second-game rookie Todd Murphy. The pair displayed maturity beyond their years to bat for an hour and get the home side over the line with 8.2 overs to spare.Perry ended on 32 not out – three short of his highest first-class score in 14 matches – while Murphy hit the winning runs to finish unbeaten on 24.With both teams seeking to become the only state with three wins, the result pushes Victoria top of the standings going into next week’s final round.Earlier, Victoria had seemed well in control in pursuit of 231 to win from 82 overs. Travis Dean piled on a boundary-laden 47 at just over a run a ball as Victoria quickly reached 74 for the first wicket. However, a middle-order collapse – they lost 5 for 40 – changed the momentum completely. Tom Andrews picked up the key wickets of Nic Maddinson and wicketkeeper Sam Harper, while debutant fellow spinner Ben Manenti returned 3 for 89.Earlier, Tasmania advanced from their overnight 7 for 170 to be all out for 209 as Perry finished with 4 for 31. Peter Handscomb claimed nine catches for the match, the second most by an outfielder in first-class history, his last a fantastic diving take at midwicket.Tasmania can still reach the season decider with victory at home against Queensland, while Victoria will shore up hosting rights if they win in Perth.

Ben Foakes shows his class but Jos Buttler still casts a shadow

After a run of six defeats, Somerset well-placed to press for victory at The Oval

Matt Roller22-Apr-2022

Ben Foakes drives through the covers•Getty Images

Ben Foakes tucked Josh Davey off his pads, jogging through for a single to take him from 39 to 40. Four-and-a-half thousand miles away, Jos Buttler leaped and punched the air to celebrate his third hundred of the season for Rajasthan Royals, his fourth in his last eight IPL innings. An hour later, Foakes edged Peter Siddle to second slip for 63, taking his tally for the season to 240 runs for twice out, under dark clouds in the south London chill; Buttler lurked in the outfield in the stifling heat of south Mumbai as Delhi Capitals’ run chase faded away.It is Foakes’ great misfortune that he was born so soon after one of the country’s most talented ball-strikers, without whom he might well have enjoyed several years as England’s first-choice Test wicketkeeper. As Theodore Roosevelt put it, comparison is the thief of joy.Foakes’ innings was typically classy. He clipped seven fours through wide mid-on and caressed three more through the covers, knocking singles into gaps and defending solidly in between. Not for the first time this season, he benefited from some luck: he was dropped on 2 by Tom Banton at short midwicket – who atoned with an outrageous diving catch at deep backward square leg off Ollie Pope – and survived a chance for a run-out when Tom Lammonby threw wide of the stumps, but in batting for more than three hours, he ensured Surrey recovered from an early stutter. But throughout his innings, the English cricketing world had its eye on another wicketkeeper-batter. How could it not? Buttler’s form has been irresistible. Every innings he plays is appointment-to-view television. Even the Championship’s most ardent defenders would concede that there is an untamed beauty in the way he hits the ball, and a hint of genius in his calculated assaults.Related

Of course, Buttler’s unadulterated brilliance in coloured kit against a white ball has often detracted from his standing as a Test batter. His record compares favourably with every batter capped by England since his debut, but the contrast with his dominance elsewhere is stark. Unlike Foakes, who looks most comfortable in a long-sleeved white shirt, Buttler’s colour is pink – or red, or light blue. There has been little to separate them as Test batters to date: Buttler’s average is a shade above 30, Foakes’ is a shade below. Foakes is widely regarded as the better keeper but showed in the Caribbean that he is hardly infallible, while Buttler’s thousand-yard stare after he dropped Marnus Labuschagne at Adelaide in December has clouded judgement over his ability with the gloves.Which of them – if either – should keep wicket in England’s first Test of the summer against New Zealand? And how can their performances today possibly be compared? If Rob Key re-introduces the position of national selector as widely expected, the appointee will again be reminded that selection is an art, rather than an exact science. The simplest answer is to concede that the game’s various formats are diverging to such an extent that Buttler should be set free, never to face a dark-red Dukes ball again and given room to thrive against the white Kookaburra. Foakes would take over as Test wicketkeeper, with his best years ahead of him and the long-term backing that he needs to thrive. And yet… with Buttler in this sort of form, with such obvious talent, it is tempting to strip the game back to its most basic elements: if he can hit the world’s best bowlers for 100-metre sixes in the IPL, marrying destruction with dependability, why shouldn’t he thrive against them in another format? It is the logic that underpinned his recall four years ago, when Ed Smith took a calculated gamble and gave him a free role at No. 7.Either way, Surrey were grateful for Foakes’ runs. They trailed Somerset by 133 runs at the close, and if Banton had held onto his early chance, they would be at risk of following on. Foakes added 80 with Pope for the fourth wicket, then 45 with Sam Curran for the fifth to steer them through a tricky afternoon in helpful bowling conditions.Siddle, who yesterday became the first Australian fast bowler since Michael Kasprowicz to reach 200 first-class appearances, had struck early, having Ryan Patel well caught by Jack Leach at point. After lunch, Craig Overton removed Rory Burns and Jack Brooks had Hashim Amla caught in the slips with his eighth ball of the season, leaving Surrey wobbling at 48 for 3 before their recovery.Tom Abell, unbeaten on 121 overnight, reached exactly 150, the highest score of his first-class career, before he ran out of partners to give Somerset 337 – more than they had made across both innings in their one-wicket defeat against Essex last week. After a run of six consecutive defeats, they look well-placed not only to avoid a seventh, but to push for their first Championship win in nearly a year.

Ronaldo 2.0: Man Utd could land £102k-p/w ace who dubbed Rashford a "model"

Another game has come and gone and Ruben Amorim has still opted to leave Manchester United star, Marcus Rashford, languishing on the sidelines, with the England international having not featured in any of the last four matchday squads.

Whether that exile will be reversed amid United’s run of three successive defeats in all competitions remains to be seen, although it is clear that the 27-year-old faces an uncertain future at Old Trafford, following his shock admission that he is ready for a “new challenge”.

As reported by The Athletic, the winger’s hefty wage – claimed elsewhere to be as high as £300k-per-week – may make it difficult for a permanent exit to occur in January, although a temporary departure on loan could represent a solution for all parties.

Whether Rashford does ultimately move on in 2025 or not, the attacking unit is in desperate need of reinforcement regardless, with recent outings having further exposed the lack of quality in the forward line.

Man Utd's attacking woes

The Red Devils have now failed to score in their last two league games following dismal defeats to both Bournemouth and Wolverhampton Wanderers, taking their total tally to just 21 goals in 18 top-flight fixtures in 2024/25. A -3 goal difference makes for grim reading.

That failure to fire was even evident in the 4-3 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup, with it taking a handful of Fraser Forster gifts for United to eventually get on the scoresheet. Speaking afterwards, Amorim lamented the fact that Spurs were more “clinical”. The same phrase was then uttered after losing to the Cherries.

At present, United’s top scorer is Alejandro Garnacho with eight goals across all fronts – ahead of Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund on seven apiece. To put that into context, league leaders Liverpool already have three players into double figures, in the form of Cody Gakpo (ten), Luis Diaz (11) and Mohamed Salah (19).

With summer signing Joshua Zirkzee scoring just four times – while Antony has netted just once this season – it is hard to see just where the goals will come from, particularly if Rashford does depart. Even man of the moment, Amad Diallo, has only scored five goals in total this season.

It is for that reason that new recruits must be a priority for INEOS in the near future, with United having assembled an attack that is simply nowhere near capable of challenging for major honours.

Man Utd could land the 'next Ronaldo'

Those of a United persuasion no doubt yearn for the days of Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez, with the trio notably spearheading the side that claimed Champions League glory in 2008. How the mighty have fallen.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Talents of that ilk appear to be long again at Old Trafford, although if recent reports are to be believed, the ‘next Ronaldo’ could emerge as a possible target for 2025, in the form of AC Milan star, Rafael Leao.

As reported in Spain – via Milan Live – earlier this week, the Red Devils are among the clubs, alongside Arsenal, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, who are keen to snap up the Portuguese sensation in the near future.

AC Milan's Theo Hernandez celebrates scoring their first goal with Rafael Leao and Tijjani Reijnders.

The suggestion is that Leao – who arrived at San Siro from Lille back in 2019 – is seeking a fresh challenge after almost six years in Milan, with a raft of clubs rightly queueing up to land the at times “unstoppable” speedster, as hailed by teammate Tammy Abraham.

While there may be concern that the £102k-per-week hero previously described that man Rashford as a “model”, United should be far more interested in the forward’s stellar form in recent years, having terrorised defenders down the left flank.

Rafael Leao

With 64 goals and 55 assists to his name in 232 games in all competitions for his club side, Leao has been a shining light in his current home, with it no surprise that national team boss Roberto Martinez has dubbed him “one of the best players in the world one-on-one”.

That explosive, game-changing talent was even evident during his academy days at Sporting CP – where Ronaldo also began his career. Indeed, his former youth coach Tiago Fernandes even went as far as to say:

Following in the footsteps of a player who scored 145 goals in 346 games for United across two spells may prove too great a burden, yet with Leao possessing shades of his international colleague, there’s every reason he could shine in Manchester.

Imagine him & Piroe: Leeds lining up move for "huge talent" with 16 goals

Leeds United maintained their place at the top of the Championship table on Saturday after they were held to a dramatic 3-3 draw away at Hull City.

The Whites had a 3-1 lead in the match heading into the final ten minutes and managed to throw it away, conceding two late on, to come away with just one point.

Daniel Farke’s side are still top of the division but their lead over Sheffield United and Burnley, who both won their respective games, has dropped from three points to one.

The West Yorkshire outfit were heading for all three points after goals from Ao Tanaka, Dan James, and Joel Piroe, and goalkeeper Illan Meslier will not look back fondly on his part in the Hull comeback.

As you can see from the highlights, the Leeds goalkeeper did not cover himself in glory for any of the three goals from the home side and he will need to up his level of performance to ensure that there are no further questions over his position in the team.

Whilst goalkeeping and defensive issues were on display in that draw, Leeds are reportedly in the market to add another attacking option to their squad.

Leeds United interested in Premier League starlet

According to TEAMtalk journalist James Marshment, Leeds United are one of the teams interested in a deal to sign Aston Villa winger Louie Barry.

The reporter claims that the Whites are keeping tabs on his situation after the Premier League team decided to recall the youngster from his loan spell with League One side Stockport County ahead of the January transfer window.

Marshment’s accompanying report from TEAMtalk states that the Championship leaders are keen on a swoop for the forward, with Farke seemingly lining up a move to bring him to Elland Road before the February deadline.

The outlet adds that Villa are planning to send him back out on loan and that there are now a host of teams preparing to battle it out for his signature ahead of the second half of the season.

It reveals that Sheffield United, Middlesbrough, and Sunderland are also interested in signing the 21-year-old dynamo, which means that there is plenty of competition for Leeds to contend with if they want to win the race for his services.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The Whites will need to convince Barry that a move to Elland Road is the best next step in his development, after his time with Stockport County, and showing him the quality of the players he would have the chance to play with could help their cause, as he could link-up with Joel Piroe in the coming months.

Joel Piroe's form this season

The Dutch marksman added another goal to his tally in the 3-3 draw with Hull on Saturday, as he scored the third goal of the match for Farke’s side.

Ivor Pandur played a stray pass to Piroe on the edge of the box but the striker still had plenty to do and he drove into the box before firing in a pinpoint effort into the bottom right corner with his left foot.

The left-footed forward lost all nine of his duels and struggled with the physicality of the Hull defenders, but made up for that with his terrific effort to put his team two goals ahead, and it should have been enough to secure all three points.

Piroe has started 16 of the club’s 26 Championship matches so far this season, after Mateo Joseph began the season as the first-choice in the centre-forward role, and has been a fairly reliable performer for the manager at the top end of the pitch.

As you can see in the table above, the former Swansea star has produced an impressive 15 goals and assists in 16 starts for Leeds this season, whilst overperforming his xG by between three and four goals.

These statistics show that Piroe is a forward who is clinical in front of goal and makes the most of the high-quality chances that come his way, whilst also being able to create opportunities for his teammates to find the back of the net.

Why Louie Barry would love Joel Piroe

If Leeds do win the race with Sheffield United, Middlesbrough, and Sunderland to secure the services of Barry on loan for the second half of the season, the Aston Villa winger could love to play alongside the Dutchman for multiple reasons.

Firstly, the 21-year-old flanker created five ‘big chances’ for Stockport in the first half of the season in League One and was only rewarded with two assists, which suggests that he has not been playing with strikers as clinical as Piroe.

Therefore, Barry, who was described as a “huge talent” by pundit Carlton Palmer, could benefit from having a forward like him to make the most of the high-quality chances that he has the quality to create from the left flank, which could improve his assist tally in the second half of the 2024/25 campaign.

As you can see in the clip above, the Aston Villa youngster, formerly of Barcelona, also has the ability to find the back of the net in spectacular fashion, and he has 16 goals in all competitions to further back that up.

The statistics in the table above illustrate his goalscoring quality, albeit at a lower level, after a return of 15 goals from 23 games whilst playing on the left flank.

This suggests that he could also help Piroe to add further assists to his tally because Barry has the ability to pop up with goals on a regular basis, although the forward has yet to prove that he can do it consistently in the Championship.

Knowing his responsibility, understanding the pattern of the game, avoiding looking at hard numbers and changing his training method are some of the things that have helped Litton Das become a more consistent Test batter.Litton’s 141 in the first innings against Sri Lanka in Dhaka is his third Test hundred in the last six months when he has averaged 56.15, after spending six years as an underperforming enigma.Litton said that he is enjoying the responsibility put on him by his team-mates, who believe he can get them big scores. For long, Litton has been regarded as the most talented batter of his generation, with most of the senior cricketers often batting away media criticism towards him. Litton is however more interested in biding his time in the lower middle-order, despite his form.Related

“It stays in the back of my mind that my team wants me to play a big innings,” Litton said. “It helps me knowing that the team depends on me. Where did I score my runs this year? There will be more opportunities. When the senior brothers will not play, I will get my chance (higher up the batting order). I don’t see how I can bat up. I am fine with where I am.”Litton said that when Ashwell Prince was Bangladesh’s batting coach, he explained to him the necessity to bat for time in Test cricket. He added that taking his eyes off from his career numbers has also helped him. Litton, however, remained mum about what changes he made in his training method.”I now know the pattern of Test cricket, how long I should bat to get big runs. What he explained to me, really helped me. I still follow those words.”When I used to see (my statistics), I saw that I was on the backfoot. There was a challenge to go forward. I no longer see (my statistics) because I am more focused on going ahead. I don’t know how far I can go.”Litton’s confidence showed in how he kept hitting pull shots whenever the Sri Lankan pace duo of Asitha Fernando and Kasun Rajitha pitched short and bowled bouncers at him. He scored 47 runs off 28 balls square of the wicket and behind square on the leg side, during his innings.”I think I have been playing the pull shot quite well in the last year-and-a-half. The control was with me. I believed that I could get out of the situation if he was bowling short. I can keep scoring. I kept playing the pull shot because I had the confidence to play the pull,” he said.Litton’s 141 was part of a 272-run sixth wicket stand with Mushfiqur Rahim, who was unbeaten on 175 when Bangladesh were bowled out for 365. In an innings where six batters got out for ducks, the partnership created all sorts of records.”Mushy and I batted under pressure. We wanted to put together a big partnership, and whatever we did, it was good for the team. I have had a number of 150-plus stands with (Mushy) . We knew that we had to make 300-plus batting first in Mirpur. We wanted to bat long since our top-order failed.”When I go to bat, even if the team score is 300 runs, I am under pressure. When I am batting at five wickets down (quickly), I am still under pressure. I start from zero. The normal conversation with Mushfiq was to drag the innings as much as possible. Our first target was to play till lunch.”Bangladesh will consider themselves slightly ahead of the curve after they took Kusal Mendis’ wicket late on the second day. “They are still far behind (Bangladesh’s first innings score). We will have a big chance if we can take one or two early wickets tomorrow. We will be in the backfoot if they can get close to our score or even take a lead,” Litton said, warning that the Mirpur pitch is already showing sign of variable bounce.”It was certainly uneven. One of the first two balls I faced today, was uneven. It was slightly better than the typical Mirpur wicket. I think as the Test wears on there will be deliveries that are more uneven.”
