Arsenal looking at signing £83m Real Madrid target with 24 y/o set to quit

Arsenal are looking at signing a Real Madrid target for manager Mikel Arteta, with a member of their squad expected to leave in January.

Edu's rumoured transfer plans for Arsenal

The Premier League title hopefuls remain unbeaten in all competitions so far this campaign, partly highlighting the excellent job done by Edu Gaspar and his recruitment team over the last few windows.

It could even be longer.

Edu and Arteta, who work in tandem on the club’s transfer policy, have transformed Unai Emery’s previous squad from serial underachievers to real contenders for silverware – and they’re unlucky not to have more trophies in the cabinet from these last few seasons.

Pep Guardiola’s Man City have set the bar very high for teams hoping to win the Premier League, and Arsenal’s tally of 89 points last term would’ve been enough to clinch title glory in many of the previous campaigns.

Arteta has set a target of over 90 points for 2024/2025, according to some reports, with City’s loss of star player Rodri for the rest of this season potentially giving them a real chance of usurping the Sky Blues this time round.

In the background, Edu and his staff are working on plans to upgrade the squad, either in January or next summer. A lot of rumours have centered around a possible new striker, after Arsenal elected not to sign one in January.

Arsenal did attempt to sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig and were linked with a host of other centre-forwards, but the Gunners ended up keeping their faith in makeshift centre-forward Kai Havertz.

Arteta is said to be keen on a partner for Havertz, though, amid doubts surrounding the suitability of Gabriel Jesus. Meanwhile, it is believed that Arsenal are interested in Como midfielder Nico Paz, and they have eyes on upgrading their central defensive options too.

Arsenal are looking at signing Vitor Reis

Despite the addition of Riccardo Calafiori in January, reports have linked Arsenal with Palmeiras star Vitor Reis.

The Brazilian’s deal includes an £83 million release clause, but it is believed Edu and co could strike a deal for much cheaper than that. According to The Boot Room, Arsenal are looking at signing Reis alongside Real Madrid, who are also believed to be very keen on the South American.

This comes as 24-year-old defender Jakub Kiwior is expected to leave in the winter window, so Reis could act as a direct replacement for the Poland international.

The Brazil Under-17 international has also been praised by Football Analyst Ben Mattinson for his bravery and leadership traits.

“Vitor Reis’ rise to global recognition from elite clubs is massively down to his impressive mentality. When watching him, you can see that bravery in every action,” wrote Mattinson on X.

“He has a commanding, confident presence that’s rare in such a young defender. Many early leadership traits have been shown already and when I first saw him play for Brazil’s U17’s, his leadership shone amongst his peers.”

Portsmouth face 3 injury doubts vs Sheffield Wednesday after "nasty knock"

Amid their recent struggles, Portsmouth have had their misery compiled by three fresh injury doubts who are now facing a race to be fit enough to square off against Sheffield Wednesday this weekend.

Portsmouth injury news

After earning promotion from League One, Pompey would have been full of optimism that they’ve got enough to stay put in England’s second tier. Just 11 games in, however, and that optimism has evaporated with John Mousinho’s side sitting rock bottom of the Championship. Some hope may have been restored when they defeated Queens Park Rangers, but Portsmouth have since been returned to reality in brutal fashion by fellow strugglers Cardiff City.

On the end of a 2-0 defeat, Portsmouth must pick themselves up and go again against Sheffield Wednesday as soon as Friday in what should be seen as another winnable game. Pick up three points against the Owls and Pompey will even find themselves out of the relegation zone if results go their way. That said, they have already been handed a triple blow in pursuit of those three points.

As confirmed by Mousinho and reported by the Star, Paddy Lane, Jordan Williams and Nico Schmid are all doubts to face Sheffield Wednesday on Friday after all three were forced off with injuries against Cardiff.

John Mousinho for Portsmouth.

Mousinho provided an update on the trio, telling reporters: “Paddy has done something to his Achilles and Jordan took a nasty knock to the hip flexor in the challenge that somehow saw Cardiff awarded a free-kick… Nico got a whack to the head when they scored their second goal and had blurred vision, so we took him off.”

Ahead of a crucial relegation six-pointer against Sheffield Wednesday, Pompey will particularly miss mainstays Williams and Lane in what is now an uphill battle towards victory.

More frustration for Portsmouth

Losing three players in one game due to injury almost sums up Portsmouth’s fortunes so far this season, with those at Fratton Park currently hurtling straight back down to League One. Mousinho’s hope will be to at least get Williams and Lane back fit and firing as soon as possible – perhaps even after his side’s game against the Owls on Friday.

Both have started eight of Portsmouth’s 11 Championship games so far this season, highlighting their importance under Mousinho. If Lane, in particlar, can return from his current knock with a bang, then his side’s survival chances will undoubtedly increase. Playing a vital part in promotion last season, the winger scored 12 goals and assisted another seven in League One, but has so far failed to replicate that output in the Championship.

Following Sheffield Wednesday, Portsmouth take a trip to Hull City before then facing Plymouth Argyle. Truth be told, the next three games are the kind that Mousinho’s side must be earning points from. Further defeats would leave even the most optimistic Portsmouth fan fearing the worst in what could prove to be a make-or-break run in the coming weeks.

Cricket Australia 'desperately' wants to host final Ashes Test in Perth

A game of golf, heading to the beach and dining outdoors will be on offer for the squads for most of the series

Cricket Australia is continuing to work towards hosting the final men’s Ashes Test as scheduled in Perth in January with negotiations ongoing with the Western Australia government about the requirements to get the tour into the state but it will remain tough to get over the line.Over the weekend, the ECB board gave conditional approval to the tour going ahead if certain “critical conditions” are met over the coming weeks – related to visas, travel exemptions and details over biosecure plans – and on Sunday the squad was named.England will arrive into Queensland in two groups during November – the Test-only and Lions players on November 5 followed by those at the T20 World Cup later in the month – where they will undertake 14 days quarantine with additional freedoms around their resort hotel. Families will be able to join the tour. The first Test takes place at the Gabba on December 8 followed by the second in Adelaide with travel between Queensland and South Australia currently free of significant restrictions. The tour then swings to Melbourne and Sydney with the expectation they will be open to each other by then, but the sticking point remains travel to Perth with WA indicating it is unlikely to lift their hard border to New South Wales until next year. There is hope that the situation could have eased by mid-January as vaccination rates increase. But the likelihood is that if the Test does get the green light for Optus Stadium that the squads would need to return to tighter restrictions for the final week of the tour which could prove a hard sell to England who are strongly against strict bubbles.Related

England's 2021-22 Ashes squad – winners and losers

Stokes is 'moving forward', says Silverwood, but unlikely to form part of England's Plan B

“We would desperately like to play the fifth Test in Perth, it’s absolutely our intention to do so,” Nick Hockley, the Cricket Australia CEO, said. “Those discussions are going on right as we speak. We are encouraged by the experience we had last summer when we were able to play five BBL matches in January.”There’s been a whole winter of experience of playing elite sport at Perth Stadium in biosecure conditions. We have strong relationships and are working through the detail as to what that might look like. It’s really important we are giving both squads, match officials and broadcasters a great experience and their wellbeing is front of mind.”Comments from WA premier, Mark McGowan, reinforced the view that there remain plenty of hurdles. “They’ll have to comply with the rules that are put in place,” he said. “I’ll continue to talk to the chief health officer about that but the rules are there for a reason, they keep us safe. NSW is riddled with Covid…we have to have pretty strong rules in place to protect our state and that will continue.”Hockley said it was “premature” to talk about contingencies should a Perth Test not get across the line – CA has previously insisted the order of the Tests would not change – but the options would range from hosting a second match in either Sydney or Melbourne, taking the series to Canberra or potentially Hobart which will lose out on hosting Afghanistan. In terms of the conditions the two squads will face once quarantine is complete for those who have to go through it – which will include Australia players from New South Wales and Victoria – they will vary from state-to-state but will allow various recreation and outdoor dining.”The environment has changed with people becoming vaccinated. We’ve really tried to prioritise the wellbeing of all concerned,” Hockley said. “A lot of it is about common sense, socially distancing and keeping safe, but through the course of the summer we would like the ability for our players to enjoy a round of golf, go to the beach, enjoy a meal outside.”Although Covid case numbers remain significantly lower in Australia than the UK, the risk of looser restrictions was shown during the English season when the home side had to name an entirely new squad for the ODI series against Pakistan then the final Test against India was called off.”Last season we played every match without a single case,” Hockley said. “If there was a case, there are clearly detailed protocols but it’s analysing the situation on a case-by-case basis, involves isolating the person who has tested positive then working quickly and forensically to work out whether there has been any close contact. That’s why we have a fantastic medical team. Hopefully it doesn’t come to that.”Meanwhile, the Afghanistan Test, which was due to start in Hobart on November 27 and provide a lead-in to the Ashes for the Australia players, has been all-but certain to be called off since CA took their stance on the potential exclusion of women from the sport with confirmation expected this week. However, Hockley said there remained a commitment to try and play the game in the future.”The work we’ve been doing is to understand the situation on the ground,” he said. “We made our position very, very clear off the back of some earlier comments around cricket potentially not being supported for women and girls. It’s most likely that we will postpone the Test until a time when there is more clarity following consultation with the Australia government.”

New Zealand international Matt Henry will return to Kent for the 2022 county season.Henry, the 29-year-old right-arm seamer, is set to join the club on July 10 and will be available for up to seven Championship games and for the Royal London Cup, subject to regulatory approval.Having originally played for Kent as an overseas player in 2018, Henry had planned to re-join them during the 2020 season before the Covid-19 pandemic forced both parties agreed on his withdrawal. He took 75 wickets in 11 matches during the 2018 Championship, finishing the year as Division Two’s highest wicket-taker, with a bowling average of 15.48. During that time, he achieved new first-class best bowling figures twice, firstly with 7 for 45 at Durham before his current best of 7 for 42 against Northamptonshire. In the 2018 One-Day Cup, Henry was part of the side that reached the final at Lord’s, taking 16 wickets in 11 matches and he won Kent’s Bowler of the Year award at the season’s end.In 2021, Kent topped Division Three of the Championship and won the Vitality Blast title.”I have really good memories of playing for Kent in the past,” Henry said. “I’m driven to bring more success to the county in 2022. Injury update on "brilliant" Sheffield Wednesday ace before Steel City derby

After returning to winning ways with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Norwich City, Sheffield Wednesday have been handed a much-welcomed boost on the injury front ahead of this weekend’s Steel City derby.

Sheffield Wednesday injury news

The Owls have endured a mixed spell of form as of late. Whilst they were on the receiving end of a 6-2 thrashing at the hands of Watford last weekend, they bounced back on Tuesday night with a much-needed victory over Norwich, courtesy of goals from Josh Windass and Dominic Iorfa. Now, with those three points, Danny Rohl’s side sit 13th and six points adrift of the Championship’s dropzone.

That victory has come at the perfect time too, given that Sheffield United and the Steel City derby await this weekend. In a crucial clash against their rivals, Wednesday will be looking to upset the odds and spoil the Blades’ early promotion pursuit. Ahead of such an important game, it’s not just the three points that handed Rohl a major boost, either.

Sheffield Wednesday got back to winning ways in the Championship with a 2-0 win over Norwich City.

ByKelan Sarson Nov 6, 2024

As confirmed by the manager, Iorfa is likely to be fit to face Sheffield United this weekend despite going off with an injury against Norwich on Tuesday night. Rohl told reporters, as relayed by The Star: “It’s always a decision, and you never know what happens. But he showed me immediately after the game that he’s ok.

“Let’s see in the next few hours, but I think he’ll be ready for the game at the weekend. I’m happy that he scored, I think that’s also a good reaction from him.”

Without a win at Bramall Lane since 2009, Sheffield Wednesday need all the help they can get which makes the news of Iorfa’s injury relief an even greater boost for Rohl and his side.

"Brilliant" Iorfa still a key man at Sheffield Wednesday

At the club since 2019, Iorfa remains an important figure at Sheffield Wednesday and will be crucial if Rohl’s side are to cause an upset against Sheffield United this weekend. The central defender even showed off his goalscoring exploits against Norwich in another string to his bow.

Well aware of his teammates’ importance for some time, Barry Bannan was previously full of praise for Iorfa, saying via The Star: “He’s brilliant. I said it earlier on in the season as well, since he’s come in and played centre-half he’s been unbelievable, he’s like a man mountain. He’s driven us forward, he’s made box headers. He’s at the top of his game at the minute.”

Still just 29 years old, the defender is likely to continue his impact for a few more years yet to keep Sheffield Wednesday afloat in the Championship and perhaps push them onto mid-table comforts.

Before those ambitions, however, Iorfa will have his sights on ending a nightmare run at Bramall Lane following the news that he avoided a serious injury against Norwich on Tuesday night. The Steel City derby, as ever, will be one to watch.

India will play a six-match bilateral series comprising a T20I and five ODIs in February on their tour of New Zealand, before the two teams join six other sides in the Women’s ODI World Cup scheduled for March-April.The series, key to both teams fine-tuning their plans and combinations for the World Cup, will get underway on February 9 with the one-off T20I at McLean Park in Napier and will be followed by the first ODI at the same venue two days later. The Saxton Oval in Nelson will then host the second and third ODIs, on February 14 and 16, with the final two ODIs to be played at the John Davies Oval in Queenstown on February 22 and 24. None of the venues are slated to host any of the 31 World Cup fixtures, which will be played at Eden Park, Seddon Park, Bay Oval, University Oval and Basin Reserve, with Hagley Oval hosting the final. The bilateral series will be both teams’ first assignment in 2022, a year with two major events on the women’s cricket calendar – the rescheduled ODI World Cup, to be hosted in New Zealand for the first time in 22 years, and the Commonwealth Games in July-August.Fixtures

The World Cup, originally scheduled for 2021, was postponed in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. NZC chief executive David White acknowledged the delay in announcing the summer schedule, explaining it was inevitable given the impact of the pandemic both in New Zealand and abroad, and the knock-on effects on international travel.”It hasn’t been a straight-forward process and we’ve needed to work through a number of unexpected changes before finalising the arrangements,” White said in an NZC release. “Having said that, I’m delighted with the volume and quality of the international cricket to be played over the summer, particularly given the importance of, and the relevance connected to these games. The India series is a crucial part of the WHITE FERNS’ [New Zealand Women’s] World Cup preparations.”The two teams last squared off against each other in a bilateral series in January-February 2019, when New Zealand hosted India for six limited-overs games. India clinched the ODI series 2-1 while New Zealand handed them a 3-0 sweep in the T20I leg of the tour.India’s last international outing was a seven-match tour of Australia in September-October this year, which featured three ODIs and T20Is apiece and a pink-ball Test. New Zealand, meanwhile, last played in September, when they toured England, losing the T20I series 1-2 and the five-ODI series 1-4.
