Opener’s 82 guides Hampshire but visitors hit back between showers

Ed Barnes grabbed three wickets as Leicestershire kept Hampshire’s powerful batting line-up in check on a day punctuated by rain delays at the Ageas Bowl. After only 26.2 overs were possible on the opening day, 56 were lost on day two following a three-and-a-half hour break after lunch – the second of two rain delays – as the hosts closed on 223 for 7. In bitterly cold and windy conditions – more akin to midwinter than mid-May – it was to the credit of the Leicestershire seam attack that they managed to pick up six wickets over the course of the day.Alex Evans, who had Ian Holland dropped by Rishi Patel for 12 on Wednesday, looked to have made an early breakthrough when he bowled Tom Alsop off an inside edge only for umpire Martin Saggers to rule it a no-ball. But the 20-year-old redeemed himself in his very next over when he squared Alsop up with a full-length delivery and skipper Colin Ackermann took the catch at slip to dismiss the left-hander for 25.Sam Northeast, then fell for 2 to a superb ball from Chris Wright who found a way through the former Kent captain’s defence and clipped the top of his off stump.Holland, who has been in fine form this season, passed 50 for fifth time in 11 innings and looked well on course for his third century of the campaign when he stroked three boundaries from a Gavin Griffiths over before lunch. But the opener’s stylish knock came to an end on 82 when he played all around a straight ball from Barnes and was trapped on the pad just before rain took the players off for the first time.Play resumed over an hour later and Barnes should have grabbed the key wicket of James Vince, who scored 231 when the sides last met in April, but Patel put down yet another catch at gully when the Hampshire skipper was on 19. But his blushes were spared when Barnes deceived Vince with a slower ball that thumped the England batsman’s front pad and umpire Nigel Llong raised the finger to send him on his way for 32.With pitchside advertising hoardings being blown to the ground and Leicestershire wicketkeeper Harry Swindells finding himself scampering across the outfield to retrieve his helmet as it tumbled towards the boundary rope there seemed little hope of play resuming when rain started to fall. However, thanks to the hard work of the Hampshire ground staff, play got underway again at 6pm with the hosts losing Liam Dawson for 19 and then Lewis McManus for 15 with Barnes and Evans taking the wickets.

Kieran Powell will replace him under the concussion substitute rule

West Indies batter Nkrumah Bonner has been ruled out of the first Test against South Africa in St Lucia after being diagnosed with concussion. Kieran Powell will replace him under the concussion substitute rule.Bonner top edged the very first ball he faced, off pacer Anrich Nortje, when he attempted to hook a short delivery but played the ball onto his helmet’s badge. He appeared shaken and was checked for concussion on the field – while South Africa reviewed unsuccessfully for a possible catch – and allowed to continue. He faced 32 balls in all and scored 10 runs but did not take the field when West Indies arrived to bowl, midway through the second session.Instead, Powell was on the field and will now also bat in Bonner’s place. Powell has not played for West Indies since 2018 and was recalled for the series. If was a big blow on a day of blows for West Indies, who were routed for 97 – the 19th time in Test cricket they’ve been bowled out below 100, and their lowest total against South Africa. Bonner, averaging 62.50 in his four Tests before this one, was one of only five players to face more than 30 balls in the innings.
Crystal Palace’s recruitment model over the last few years has allowed the club to develop into a particularly solid Premier League side.
Steve Parish and the hierarchy have narrowed their focus to signing younger players who have the potential to develop at Selhurst Park, making an impact on the first team whilst also banking a profit in the years ahead.
Michael Olise is an excellent example of the club’s recruitment, joining in a £8m deal from Championship side Reading back in the summer of 2021, before making 90 appearances for the Eagles and leaving in a £50m move to Bayern Munich this summer.
Crystal Palace's Michael Olise
Eberechi Eze is another example of their scouting of England’s second tier, arriving in a £16m move from QPR, with the attacking midfielder now a consistent England international who has cemented himself as one of the very best talents in the division.
However, despite their excellent incomings, the club may have made a mistake in allowing one youngster to depart South London.
The Palace man who left too soon
Palace’s academy has been the home to many impressive talents, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka just one star to breakthrough into the first team before banking the club £50m when he moved to Manchester United in 2019.
However, fellow defender Jake O’Brien is another example of a young talent who was seen as one for the future, but unfortunately for the fanbase, was sold to Ligue 1 side Lyon last season.
The Irishman only moved to Selhurst Park in 2021 from Cork City, but after two years in the academy setup, he departed the club for just £1m and failed to make a single first-team appearance.
O’Brien has since gone on to star in Ligue 1 for Lyon, making 32 appearances for the French side in 2023/24, scoring five goals from centre-back – as he helped the club secure a return to European football.
As a result of his stellar performances, he’s seen a big change in his career, whilst also seeing a huge increase in his market value.
Jake O’Brien’s market value in 2024
Just 12 months on from his departure from South London, O’Brien swapped Ligue 1 for a return to the Premier League in a move to join relegation battlers Everton.
The 23-year-old joined Sean Dyche’s side for a fee in the region of £16m – a huge figure compared to the price received for his services last summer.
His transfer fee this summer yields a 1500% increase on the price he left Palace for to join Lyon, with the club undoubtedly selling the youngster too cheaply.

The situation could’ve been made worse should current centre-back Marc Guehi have left the club during the transfer window – potentially leaving Oliver Glasner’s side light in defensive areas.
O’Brien’s career has jumped to the next level after his move, becoming a regular in the Republic of Ireland international squad – further adding to his value and inflicting yet more pain on Palace.
His talents would’ve been perfect for the current Eagles squad, providing yet more defensive solidity and handing Glasner more quality in his attempts to secure a top-half finish this season.
However, it will remain a case of what could’ve been for the club, with Parish having to live with the consequences of selling the talented youngster on the cheap.

Liverpool’s interest in completing the signing of an “incredible” player who’s been likened to Lionel Messi has now gone up a notch, according to a fresh transfer claim.
Liverpool transfer news
The Reds are still being linked with possible new signings despite the window closing several weeks ago, as Arne Slot looks to bolster what is already a squad brimming with elite-level quality.
Fulham left-back Antonee Robinson has been targeted by Liverpool in the past and has again emerged as an option, as they look to pip rivals Manchester United to his signature in 2025. Andy Robertson is now 30 years of age and arguably not quite the world-class force he was a few years ago, so it is important that a long-term replacement is lined up.
Fulham defenderAntonee Robinson.
Another left-back in the form of Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez is also thought to be being eyed up by the Reds, with the Hungarian playing alongside Dominik Szoboszlai at international level. United are once again keen, so there could be a battle to snap him up. Meanwhile, another former target, Nicolo Barella, is also being linked with a switch to Anfield in one of the upcoming transfer windows, with the Italian reportedly seen as the ideal profile of midfielder for Slot to bring in.
Liverpool ready to splash the cash on "incredible" Wirtz
According to a new report from Caught Offside, Liverpool are still looking to sign Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz, having shown interest in him in the past. The Reds’ willingness to snap up the 21-year-old is believed to be “strengthening”, with the Germany international “understood to be open to a move to the Premier League” and the Reds now “xpected to be willing to pay the €100m required”, which is roughly £83.5m.
Wirtz could be a phenomenal addition for Liverpool, having shone so much for Leverkusen in their title-winning Bundesliga season last time around. The German scored and assisted 15 times apiece in the league and Europa League, not only winning the former but also reaching the final of the latter.
Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso has even compared aspects of his game to Messi, in terms of his choice of pass, and Joe Cole said of him back in May: “Incredible. I’ve watched him three times this year now and he’s blown me away every time. He’s got a South American flair with a German efficiency about him. We’ve all heard of Jude Bellingham, Cole Palmer and Phil Foden, and Musiala. This lad will be new to the British viewers. Let me tell you, he is every bit as talented as those players. He could go on to be anything.”
Still only 21, the sky feels like the limit for Wirtz, and he could add an extra dimension to Liverpool’s attack, battling Szoboszlai for minutes in a central attacking midfield role, as well as being able to shine out on the left wing, if required.
Liverpool flop who left for £5m is now outperforming Jota & emulating Messi
Liverpool never got the best out of this dud.
ByKelan Sarson Sep 23, 2024
Leverkusen will clearly be desperate to keep hold of their star man, so it won’t be easy for the Reds to get him, while Real Madrid and Bayern Munich also represent great options for him, but he should be considered a primary addition.

Amar Virdi shines as part of Surrey’s three-spinner attack but can’t stop visitors passing 400

Somerset will qualify for the Division One stage of this summer’s new-look LV= Insurance County Championship format if they avoid defeat against Surrey at the Kia Oval this week and, on a weather-reduced second day, the Group Two leaders took significant steps towards that aim by reaching 429 all out in their first innings.Late afternoon rain then caused the last 37 overs of the day to be lost after Surrey’s openers Rory Burns and Mark Stoneman had reached 24 for no wicket in reply in the final conference-stage match.Somerset’s lower order had earlier batted well against Surrey’s spin trio of R Ashwin, Amar Virdi and Dan Moriarty on a slow surface, with Indian Test offspinner Ashwin toiling through 43 overs in all for his eventual 1 for 99 and Virdi emerging as the most successful with figures of 3 for 86. Moriarty finished with 2 for 109.Resuming on 280 for 6, Somerset added 149 more runs in 50.5 overs of further hard graft, securing a third batting bonus point in the process. It completed a fine collective performance and the overnight not out pair of Roelof van der Merwe and Ben Green took their seventh wicket stand to 61 in 28 overs before Surrey offspinner Virdi made the breakthrough.Virdi, somewhat surprisingly, had to wait 90 minutes for his first bowl of day two and, with his second ball, he turned one to have Van der Merwe adjudged caught at short leg for 41.Green also batted with great self-discipline for 43, from 114 balls, before Virdi had him caught at slip and, soon afterwards, Jack Leach advanced to hit Virdi high over long-on for six. There were also two leg-side sixes from Marchant de Lange, launched powerfully off Ashwin and Moriarty, before on 29 he edged left-arm spinner Moriarty to give Rikki Clarke his second catch of the day at slip.It was close to 3pm when Somerset’s first innings finally closed, Jack Brooks mishitting Moriarty to Ashwin at point to go for 9. Leach remained unbeaten on 28, a stout 67-ball effort, but there was only time for six overs of Surrey’s first innings before the rain came.

Some West Ham United supporters might be throwing a rueful gaze back at David Moyes, but his departure at the end of the 2023/24 season was probably just.
The squad had not crashed into the ground but it had lost its footing and, after such a successful era, needed change. Well, Julen Lopetegui has been ushered in and change has been – most certainly – afoot.
£120m was spent on shiny new players, but some have not yet been allowed to really strut their stuff. Let’s take a look at two of them.
Carlos Soler & Jean-Clair Todibo have yet to take off
Carlos Soler and Jean-Clair Todibo both arrived from the French Ligue 1 this summer on respective season-long loan moves that could be turned into permanent deals at the end of the term.
Soler brings creative flair – which is much needed at the moment – but he has been restricted to two substitute appearances thus far. Still, hailed as the “complete midfielder” by former Valencia star Curro Torres, it’s time to chuck him into the starting mix.
West Ham’s midfield has been devoid of inspiration this season, and with Liverpool up next, it could be time for Soler to shine and work his way toward earning a regular starting berth – especially as Guido Rodriguez was substituted before 40 minutes against Chelsea after his wretched performance.
Todibo, conversely, did start in the Carabao Cup second round against Bournemouth but was hooked at half-time after flattering to deceive. Still, he’s a brilliant ball-playing defender and could be fundamental in unlocking this Hammers team and propelling it to the heights that technical director Tim Steidten and co envisaged when anointing him as Moyes’ heir.
Indeed, as per FBref, the Frenchman ranks among the top 4% of centre-backs across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for passes attempted, the top 9% for shot-creating actions, the top 12% for progressive passes, the top 10% for progressive carries, the top 8% for successful take-ons and the top 15% for tackles per 90.
These stars will hope to play more prominent roles as the campaign moves forward, but there’s one West Ham player who must walk in the opposite direction. Indeed, Michail Antonio must move to the periphery.
Why Michail Antonio needs to be ditched
The West Ham faithful must rue the failure to sign Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran this summer. The mercurial talent notoriously made the hammers crossed salute on a social media video during the off-season, when it looked like he was bound for east London, but it couldn’t happen and he has enjoyed a stunning start to the season – scoring against West Ham on the opening day too.

He hasn’t started a game but has four goals to his name. Niclas Fullkrug’s start to life at West Ham has been disrupted by injury, and thus Antonio fronted the ship for the opening four top-flight fixtures.
The Jamaica international has flattered to deceive. Aside from the fact that he hasn’t posted one single goal contribution, Antonio’s underlying numbers also leave plenty to be desired. He offers little as the focal star in Lopetegui’s system.

He was finally dropped last weekend, and though his side were trounced by Chelsea, it’s hard to imagine that he would have made a significant positive difference, having regressed across almost every metric so far.
Antonio has never been the most creative of strikers but he has always been a hulking physical presence with an ability to dominate and frustrate opposing defenders. However, the inexorable tug of time is proving to be his enemy this term, with his duel success diminishing, and his ball-carrying reducing too.
It’s not all his fault. Quite shockingly, West Ham have only created four big chances in the Premier League this season, which puts them right at the pit in 20th place. It’s not surprising that Antonio has failed to score or indeed make any kind of positive impact, but a younger, more robust centre-forward would certainly offer much more.
Michail Antonio for West Ham
The 34-year-old needs to be axed from the starting line-up from now on, with the likes of Bowen and Fullkrug far better placed. Antonio is out of contract at the end of the season but he does need to move on now, especially when considering his weekly salary.
Indeed, West Ham’s record Premier League goalscorer earns £85k per week, which puts him above both Soler (£80k per week) and Todibo (£20k per week). Of course, both new arrivals are currently on loan but it does emphasise the chunk that he takes from the east London banks.
The decision to sign Fullkrug was just to a degree, but now Lopetegui’s central strikers are both over 30 years old and neither offers the best mobility.
Duran, however, has some rather blistering motor skills that should have seen him thrive at the London Stadium, had he indeed been signed – he’d also offer a drastically higher goal threat too. He has to be discarded.
