Forget Felix: Aston Villa offered "magical" star who has shades of Grealish

Aston Villa have had a very busy transfer window so far this summer. They have already made eight singings, with plenty of players leaving the club, too, seven to be exact. It has been a summer that has signalled great change as the Villans get ready to venture into the Champions League next season.

They have brought in some big-name players to help strengthen their squad ahead of their European quest in 2024/25. Notably, the Midlands side have signed Amadou Onana from Everton, in a deal worth £50m. Other major signings include Ian Maatsen from Chelsea and Juventus pair Enzo Barrenechea and Samuel Iling-Junior.

Belgium's Amadou Onana

Going the other way to Turin was Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz, who joined the Italian giants in a deal worth £42.35m. They also sold Moussa Diaby to Saudi side Al Ittihad for a reportedly hefty fee of £50m, just one summer after signing the Frenchman from Bayer Leverkusen.

Having already spent a whooping £148.1m this summer, Villa might not be done just yet. They are linked to several other players who they could add to their squad, including one of the most enterprising attacking midfielders to play in Europe in recent years.

Aston Villa want Champions League-winning midfielder

The player in question here is former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich midfielder James Rodriguez. The Columbian showed his quality at the recent Copa America, and could now be in line for a move back to Europe this summer, having most recently plied his trade in Brazil.

According to a report from Graeme Bailey, the Villans are one of the clubs who have 'now been approached regarding the availability' of Rodriguez this summer.

Premier League, Everton, Everton news, Everton latest news, Everton transfers, Everton transfer news, James Rodriguez

However, they are not the only club to have been offered a chance to sign the Columbian midfielder. The extensive list of clubs includes Brighton & Hove Albion, Fulham, Nottingham Forest and Wolverhampton Wanderers, who are 'amongst those to have been contacted' about a potential deal this summer.

There is also interest in the veteran star abroad. Cesc Fabregas’ Como side could make a move, with Sevilla offering Rodriguez a potential return to Spain. The move would be a free transfer, showing a great piece of business from Villa in terms of cost.

Why Rodriguez would be a good signing

Should Villa get a deal over the line, it could be a shrewd addition to the club, given the Columbian still has bags of quality. He lit up the tournament at the Copa America, and whilst his side lost in the final to Argentina, Rodriguez still won Player of the Tournament. He grabbed six assists and scored once, starting all six games for his country.

James Rodriguez for Colombia.

He could prove to be an excellent alternative to Joao Felix, a man Villa have been linked with in recent weeks. The Portugal international is unhappy at Atletico Madrid and a move away from the club is on the cards.

However, Rodriguez could prove to be an excellent alternative to Felix. Although they are slightly different players, with Felix being a more nimble ball carrier and Rodriguez a sheer creative passer, they could both operate in the number ten roles in Unai Emery’s famed 4-2-2-2 system equally well.

Premier League, Everton, Everton news, Everton latest news, Everton transfers, Everton transfer news, James Rodriguez

A player like Rodriguez is timeless, and although he has struggled to settle into a club since a two-year loan spell to Munich in 2017/18, he has still shown flashes of his creative brilliance in the final third.

His former coach Carlo Ancelotti, who managed him in Madrid, Munich and on Merseyside for Everton, hailed the attacking midfielder during his spell at Goodison Park. Ancelotti commended Rodriguez for “using his quality”, before explaining that it is this quality which “makes him play easy”. He is the type of player who can unlock defences with a smart pass in behind with ease.

In fact, when looking at his passing stats, the 33-year-old has shades of Jack Grealish in his last season at Villa Park. The England international left in the summer of 2021 for Manchester City, and it certainly feels like he has never been replaced by the Villans.

However, should they add the Columbian to their squad, he could replicate what Grealish was doing during his final season in Claret and Blue. Within the last year, Rodriguez has averaged 9.37 progressive passes per 90 minutes and 9.59 passes into the final third each game, both of which rank him in the top 1% of attacking midfielders, as per FBref.

During the 2020/21 season for Villa, Grealish was putting up some sensational numbers. He averaged 7.78 progressive passes and 3.75 passes into the final third each game, which ranked him in the top 4% and top 12% of attacking midfielders in the Premier League, according to FBref.

Rodriguez could certainly bring back some of that maverick flair that Villa lost when they sold Grealish to the Cityzens for £100m, which was then a British record transfer fee. Football analyst Ben Mattinson described the Columbian as “magical” during the recent Copa America in the USA, and given his performance and statistical output it is easy to see why.

Adding a player as creative as Rodriguez into their squad could elevate Villa to the next level. Not only would they save money by not signing Felix, but they would be adding experience and quality to the side as they hope to ruffle some feathers in the new-look Champions League format and make a real impression.

Forget Gyokeres: Arsenal target "outstanding" £65m alternative

After almost toppling Manchester City in back-to-back Premier League campaigns, Arsenal must take that final step next season and end their two-decade title drought.

Mikel Arteta's men finished just two points off the eventual champions last year, and while they produced the best defence in the entire league, they scored five goals fewer than the Sky Blues and with the margins as tight as they are, that's an area the Gunners need to improve on.

Fortunately, reports over the last few weeks have seen the North Londoners heavily linked to several top strikers, such as Napoli's Victor Osimhen or Sporting CP's Viktor Gyokeres.

viktor-gyokeres-transfer-news-leeds-united-championship

However, with both of those superstars potentially being out of reach for Arsenal, another inform poacher has been touted for a move to the Emirates and could prove to be a realistic alternative to Sporting's Swedish goal machine.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from TEAMtalk, Arsenal are now interested in Bournemouth's star striker, Dominic Solanke.

Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke.

The report claims that, alongside Tottenham Hotspur, the Gunners are now keen to secure the Englishman's services this summer.

The £70k-per-week poacher's contract with the Cherries is set to run until June 2027, and so, according to a separate report, they are understandably holding out for a fee in the region of £65m. However, whether a club is actually willing to stump up that sort of money is another thing entirely.

Bournemouth's Dominic Solanke in action with Chelsea'sThiagoSilva

While he might not be as exciting a name as Gyokeres, the former Chelsea ace has proven his ability to score goals in the Premier League and could help move the needle for Arsenal.

Why Solanke would be a great signing for Arsenal

So, the first thing to point out is that, yes, in an ideal world, Arsenal will sign Gyokeres this summer. After all, he scored a frankly ludicrous 43 goals in 50 appearances last season and provided 15 assists for good measure.

Dominic Solanke celebrates a goal for Bournemouth.

However, with reports claiming that Sporting are still after a hefty fee for his services this summer, ranging from £67m to £84m, it looks as if the Gunners aren't going to be signing him.

That said, while Solanke wasn't quite as prolific last year, he was still a goalscoring machine, and the fact he has already proven himself such in the Premier League shouldn't be ignored.

In 42 appearances last season, the "outstanding" marksman, as Paul Merson dubbed him, scored 21 goals and provided four assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 1.68 games.

This impressive haul would've made the 6 foot 2 forward the Gunners' top goalscorer and second most productive player overall behind only Bukayo Saka, which is an incredibly impressive feat.

Moreover, while he wasn't quite as effective the campaign prior, he still racked up 14 goal involvements in 35 games, which equates to a respectable average of one every 2.5 games.

Ultimately, while Solanke might not be the best striker around or as devastatingly effective as Gyokeres appears to be, he is still an excellent goalscorer. If he could score over 20 goals with a midtable Bournemouth side, just imagine what he could do in a title-chasing Arsenal team.

Kraigg Brathwaite toasts 'amazing achievement' by West Indies: 'The future is bright'

West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite has said that sweeping Bangladesh at their own turf is an “amazing” achievement, especially having been on the receiving end of such a defeat, back in 2018 when Jason Holder had pulled out due to an injury. This time, it wasn’t just Holder who was missing, but a whole host of West Indies top players decided not to tour Bangladesh, which left the reins for Brathwaite.Related

Bangladesh fall 17 short as West Indies seal 2-0 win

The young side was no match for Bangladesh in the experience column, but when it mattered, they took control of the Tests in Chattogram, where they won by three wickets after staging a late comeback, and in Dhaka, where they clinched the 17-run win in the fourth day.”We lost 2-0 the last time we were here so to win 2-0 this time is pretty amazing,” Brathwaite said. “Winning away and sweeping the home team is truly amazing. We will never forget it. The future looks bright. We have to stay strong as a team, and keep the same attitude. This series was amazing.”We knew what we faced with all the Covid stuff that was going around. We stuck to the batting and bowling plans. This was among my top career achievements. I enjoyed every moment just being around this team, and it wasn’t easy obviously in a bubble.”Brathwaite said that his biggest source of confidence of winning the series came when they scored 409 in the first innings in Dhaka, as six out of seven teams scoring 400-plus in the first innings in Dhaka have won. Even when West Indies only gave Bangladesh a 230-run target in the fourth innings, that confidence stayed with Brathwaite.”Traditionally on this pitch, when you bat first and get a good total in Dhaka, you win 99% of the time. I was quite confident after the first-innings total. Obviously Bangladesh posted a good total as well. Pitch was still good.”Yesterday in the field, we were confident we could defend 230. They made a good start that put us under a bit of pressure. I knew that once we got a breakthrough, I thought the wickets would have tumbled.”Brathwaite said that West Indies’ discipline in the field handed them the advantage, particularly their catching, accurate bowling and batting partnerships.”Bangladesh played well but in some stages we got the better of them which was kudos to our discipline as a team. We were disciplined especially in the second innings of the first Test. (Nkrumah) Bonner and (Kyle) Meyers batted for two sessions, which was quite crucial for us.”I was confident all along. The key to winning is discipline. We took 17 catches in the Dhaka Test. We bowled to the fields, and from a batting point of view, building partnerships and putting runs on the board, I think we will continue to do well as a team,” he said.Brathwaite praised the newcomers Bonner, Mayers and Joshua Da Silva for showing fight in trying circumstances.”All three were fantastic in the series. I am not surprised. Before the series started, I had a chat with Meyers and Bonner. They were hungry. Joshua showed fight in his first Test in New Zealand, and I knew he would come out fighting here.”These guys wanted to represent West Indies, and made their families proud. They were all in the ODI team so their experience served them well. They were very motivated in the Test series to turn the table on Bangladesh.”Among his favourite moments during this series, Brathwaite recalled Shannon Gabriel’s third-day spell in which he pounded Mominul Haque, Shadman Islam and Najmul Hossain Shanto with one bouncer after another. Brathwaite also remembered how Jomel Warrican kept saying he can take the last wicket in Dhaka.”There isn’t one favourite moment. Kyle Mayers scoring the double-century, the way Bonner batted, just looked so easy working the spin, Joshua showing the fight and Shannon’s spell at the end of day three (in Chattogram). It was very inspiring.”It was a whole team effort. The final moment, when Warrican took the last wicket. He kept telling me he will do it. That capped it off.”

Konsa 2.0: Aston Villa offered "revelation" who can replace Carlos

Unai Emery may have lured some high-quality players to Aston Villa this summer in a bid to strengthen ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, but his sales have also been impressive.

While Douglas Luiz was one of his key players last term, complying with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations meant he was sacrificed, being sold to Juventus.

Moussa Diaby was another who departed Villa Park. The Frenchman didn’t quite have the most productive impact last season. An offer of around £50m was seen as too good to turn down, giving Emery some flexibility with regard to future incomings.

It looks as though there could be another one or two faces leaving the club in the next few weeks…

Latest on Diego Carlo's future

Centre-back Diego Carlos is attracting interest from fellow Premier League side Fulham as Emery looks to sell one of his highest earners.

Diego Carlos for Aston Villa

The Brazilian missed the entirety of his first season due to a ruptured Achilles tendon before making 38 appearances for the club last year.

According to The Athletic, Villa have rejected an opening bid from the Cottagers for the defender, who is also garnering interest from clubs in the Middle East.

Although their approach was rejected, talks will continue between the two clubs, with Emery looking to free up some of his wage bill by selling Carlos.

The Spaniard could have a perfect chance to land a replacement for Carlos as the club look like they have been offered a current free agent…

Aston Villa offered chance to land Carlos replacement

According to Italian outlet AreaNapoli, Mario Hermoso has been offered to both Villa and West Ham United this summer after a move to Napoli looks like it has fallen through.

Mario Hermoso

The report states that his representatives are looking to meet with AC Milan and Inter Milan regarding a potential new destination for their client.

Could Emery take the bait and bring the defender to the Premier League? Especially considering the club were first linked with Hermoso towards the end of last season.

Signing the player for nothing would represent a solid piece of transfer business for Emery, allowing him to direct funds raised by the Diaby sale towards improving other areas of the team.

Mario Hermoso’s statistics last season

It was certainly surprising that Diego Simeone failed to reach an agreement to tie Hermoso down to an extended contract given his form for Atlético last season.

The 29-year-old made 45 appearances for the Spanish side in all competitions for the club, operating at the heart of the defence under Simeone.

More importantly for Emery is the fact Hermoso featured nine times in the Champions League last term, which could be vital for Villa as they are about to embark on their maiden campaign in Europe’s premier club competition.

Among his teammates, Hermoso ranked second for accurate passes per game (50) in La Liga, while also ranking first for accurate long balls per game (4.4), sixth for tackles (1.5), fifth for interceptions (1) and fourth for clearances (2.6) per game, showing his skills across a range of passing and defensive metrics.

Journalist Zach Lowy once described the centre-back as a “revelation” a few years ago following his first call-up to the Spanish national side. While he may be approaching 30, his knowledge and experience could be important for Emery next season.

Mario Hermoso

Adding another couple of players to this area of the team could be beneficial considering the number of games the club will play throughout 2024/25.

Not only that, but Hermoso is also similar in style to Ezri Konsa, who enjoyed a solid campaign last year.

Why Mario Hermoso could be Ezri Konsa 2.0

The Englishman emerged as one of Emery’s key players for Villa last term following a series of impressive displays.

Ezri Konsa for Aston Villa

His performances didn’t go unnoticed, as he was called up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024, making three appearances in the competition as the Three Lions lost yet another continental final.

For his club, Konsa played 50 games in all competitions as Villa secured fourth spot in the Premier League table, while missing out on a place in the Europa Conference League final.

His positional versatility certainly came in handy as he was pushed into a right-back slot on occasions when Matty Cash wasn’t fit.

According to FBref, Konsa is the sixth-most comparable player to Hermoso, which suggests Emery will know exactly what type of profile he will be signing should the Spaniard make the move to the Midlands in the next few weeks.

Indeed, last season, the pair registered similar statistics with regard to pass success percentage (86.1% vs 91.1%), shot-creating actions per 90 (1.58 vs 1), tackles made (46 vs 54), percentage of aerial duels won (59% vs 68.2%) and interceptions 30 vs 28), showing just how similar the duo are.

Hermoso is a forward-thinking defender, as evidenced by the fact he ranks in the top 6% for progressive passes per 90 (6.03) when compared to his positional peers in Europe’s top five leagues.

The defender also ranked in the top 10% for successful take-ons per 90 (0.45) and in the top 12% for progressive carries per 90 (1.23) over the previous 365 days.

These statistics showcase that Hermoso is a defender who is both solid when his club don’t have the ball, while being excellent in possession, making sure possession is swiftly moved forward at all times.

Signing a defender of this quality on a free transfer is a no-brainer, making it all the more surprising that no team has snapped him up already.

There are still several weeks of the transfer window remaining for Emery to add the finishing touches to his squad. Luring Hermoso with the incentive of Champions League football should be one of his main priorities, no doubt about it.

CSA's Members Council rejects proposal for a majority independent board

The South Africa board now runs the risk of ministerial intervention

Cricket South Africa runs the risk of ministerial intervention after its Members’ Council – the decision-making arm of the organisation, which is made up of provincial presidents – rejected the interim board’s proposal for a majority independent board. At a meeting on Saturday, the members’ council advised the interim board that eight of its 14 participants voted against an independent board. This means the interim board is unable to complete one its most pressing tasks as directed by the country’s sports minister Nathi Mthethwa: to lay the framework for a new board in line with the 2012 Nicholson Commission. The interim board and minister are expected to address the public on further steps in the coming days. The reluctance of the Members’ Council to implement an independent board dates back to the time that the Nicholson report was presented to them. Part of the reason the Members’ Council continue to appoint non-independent directors is to please the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), the umbrella body under which all sports federation in this country operate – SASCOC does not approve of a majority of independent directors. That means cricket’s is mostly run by people who are involved in the domestic structures and not outsiders from the corporate world or elsewhere.Under the non-independent board, CSA has been steeped in administrative chaos that has seen several senior staff suspended for alleged misconduct and resulted in severe financial losses. Currently, CSA is still working to avoid debt that could run into hundreds of millions of Rands as a result of the failure to secure broadcasting rights for a domestic franchise T20 tournament, the Mzansi Super League, among other things. The South African Cricketers Association has previously called the situation CSA is in “an existential crisis”, something the sports minister has recognised and acted on.It was on Mthethwa’s insistence that the interim board was put in place after he threatened to step in at CSA following 18 months of headline-making over questionable governance, which led to the suspension and eventual sacking of CEO Thabang Moroe. CSA is still without a permanent CEO, and is on its third acting head, and is also without a board or a framework for how to appoint one, which essentially puts it back where it was six months go – on the cusp of government intervention.Mthethwa can act according to the country’s National Sport and Recreation Act, which gives him the power to intervene “in any dispute, alleged mismanagement or other related matter that is likely to bring a sport into disrepute”. He can also take away funding from CSA and may no longer recognise it as a national federation.

And just like that, a successful preseason comes to an end with a comfortable 2-0 win over Lyon for Arsenal in the Emirates Cup.

Mikel Arteta's side looked good for much of the encounter, although one player who was quite hit-and-miss during his time on the pitch was Gabriel Martinelli.

The Brazilian winger has bags of talent and looked incredibly dangerous at times, but he also left the pitch without a goal or assist to his name.

It's set to be a massive campaign for the former Ituano gem this season as he looks to establish himself as the Gunners' number one option on the left. Luckily for him, one of the stars recently touted for a move to N5 could be the perfect teammate to help him get back to his very best once again.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from Italian journalist Gianluca DiMarzio, Arsenal could 'get back into the game' for Napoli's Victor Osimhen this summer.

DiMarzio has revealed that while the Nigerian striker is still of interest to Paris Saint-Germain and clubs in the Saudi Pro League, the Gunners must be considered in the conversation.

The Italian does not mention the potential fee the North Londoners might have to pay, but stories from last week reported that the Neapolitans are still after the striker's €130m release clause, which converts to a cool £109m.

Bringing Osimhen in this summer would represent an enormous investment from the Gunners, but considering his ability and the fact that he could help revive Martinelli, it is likely worth making.

Why Osimhen would be a great signing for Martinelli

Okay, while there may well be any number of reasons why Osimhen would be a great signing for Martinelli, from his attitude on the training pitch to his overall personality and mentality, there is one that overrides all others: his output.

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen

Yes, the fact that the Nigerian international is such an accomplished striker is the primary reason he'd be an incredible teammate for the young Brazilian, as he could help his assists number explode next season.

For example, even though last year was a bit of a down campaign compared to the one previous, the former LOSC Lille marksman still racked up an impressive 17 goals and four assists in just 32 appearances, equating to a goal involvement on average every 1.52 games.

By comparison, Arsenal's main strikers, Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz, fell short with 16 and 21 goal involvements in 36 and 51 games, respectively. This means the Brazilian averaged one involvement every 2.25 games, and the German one every 2.42 games.

The difference is even more staggering if you compare their form from the season prior, in which the "world-class" Napoli ace, as dubbed by managerial icon José Mourinho, produced 36 goal involvements in 39 games, while Jesus managed 18 in 33, and Havertz could only reach ten in 47 appearances.

Now imagine how much more effective the Gunners' number 11 would be if he had a striker as clinical as the former Wolfsburg gem to his right; he'd almost certainly see his assist tally bloom, as even his half chances would be put in the back of the net.

Moreover, we already know, both from the eye test and via statistics, that his current teammates let him down on this front last season. According to Understat, he underperformed his expected assists in the league by 1.32.

Ultimately, while Arsenal already possess a talented set of attackers, they could reach another level with a number nine like Osimhen in the team. Not only that, but he would help get Martinelli back to his very best, if not better.

The “world-class” talent would be an exceptional signing.
