Man Utd need to axe 3/10 star who had fewer touches than Onana v Forest

It wasn't pretty, but Manchester United just about got the job done on Wednesday evening, with Erik ten Hag's side picking up a much-needed win away to Nottingham Forest to set up an FA Cup quarter-final showdown with rivals Liverpool.

Having slipped up at home to Fulham at the weekend in the Premier League – with the Manchester derby also on the horizon this weekend – the Red Devils, and their under-fire manager, could ill-afford another setback at the City Ground, with Casemiro thankfully nodding home late on to seal a hard-fought victory.

That late guided header – which also had to survive a typically excruciating VAR check – will not cloud what was another shaky showing from the Old Trafford outfit, in truth, with the makeshift side just about doing enough to hobble over the line.

A particular issue remains the lack of an orthodox option at left back in the absence of Luke Shaw, with Sofyan Amrabat forced to line up in that role last night, while the loss of Rasmus Hojlund – who had scored in six consecutive league outings – remains a continued blow, particularly after witnessing another lifeless Marcus Rashford display against the Tricky Trees.

Rashford's game in numbers vs Forest

For a short while, it looked as if things had finally clicked into gear for Ten Hag's frontline, with Hojlund's scoring spree bolstered by Alejandro Garnacho's heroics on the right flank, with the young Argentine notably netting a brace apiece against the likes of Aston Villa and West Ham United in recent months.

On the opposite side, even Rashford had somewhat found his groove after notably scoring in three successive league games in late December and early January, albeit with that brief hot streak having since deserted the Englishman – particularly amid his return to a central role.

Marcus Rashford

Against the Cottagers at the weekend, the 26-year-old 'had no presence as a focal point', in the words of Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst, and it was a similar tale for the trip to Nottingham, with the high profile star having just 31 touches of the ball in total – fewer than teammate Andre Onana in the sticks (42).

While some could argue that was down to the stand-in striker simply receiving a lack of service, when he did receive the ball the academy graduate rarely did much with it, losing possession on 11 occasions, while enjoying a pass accuracy rate of just 71%.

No Rashford, Giggs 2.0 signs: The dream XI Ashworth could build at Man Utd

Plenty of changes are set to occur at Man United.

ByTom Lever Feb 15, 2024

The £300k-per-week marksman notably lashed an effort wide late on when the chance was there to slide the ball across the box to Scott McTominay at the backpost, with Rashford failing to provide a single key pass nor record a single successful dribble on the night.

That outing rather summed up what has been a grim season for the Manchester native, with Ten Hag now needing to ponder whether Rashford should retain his place moving forward.

Rashford's season in numbers

With Hojlund out of the equation for the next few weeks at least, the only viable solution appears to be to deploy Rashford in that striking role, with the 5 foot 11 ace scoring 11 goals in just 19 games in that position last term – as per Transfermarkt.

Marcus Rashford

That being said, the misfiring forward has previously outlined his preference for operating on the left, with it seemingly a wasted venture trying to shoehorn him into the centre of the attack, with The Athletic's Laurie Whitwell noting that such a selection was "not working again" last night.

Even if other alternatives are scarce – with Anthony Martial inevitably sidelined and young Joe Hugill out on loan – that should not spare Rashford from the axe, with the England international having hardly hit form even when featuring on the flank this term, after netting just five goals in total.

2 assists

6 big chances missed

11.1 possession lost per game

Off-the-field issues have also plagued the mercurial talent over the course of the campaign, having notably been pictured out partying just a matter of hours after the previous Manchester derby defeat back in October.

With Pep Guardiola's imperious outfit – who hit Luton Town for six in midweek – next on the agenda for United, Ten Hag should be bold and thrust Rashford back onto the bench on Sunday afternoon, even if it means another tactical readjustment in attack.

As the aforementioned Luckhurst – who awarded Rashford a 3/10 match rating against Nuno Espirito Santo's side – stated, he looks a 'shadow of that fearless teenager' who memorably scored a brace against Arsenal eight years ago…

'Make the guys secure first' – Yuvraj Singh blames team management for India's World Cup 2019 loss

Former allrounder rues lack of support from the management, which left him with the regret of not playing another World Cup match after his Man-of-the-Tournament performance in India’s 2011 win

Yuvraj Singh has rued the lack of support from the India team management, which left him with the regret of not playing another World Cup match after his Man-of-the-Tournament performance in India’s 2011 win. Yuvraj believes he deserved another shot with an average of 41.33 and a strike rate of 98.67 in his last comeback that lasted 11 matches. It ended unsatisfactorily for Yuvraj, who was left out after the 2017 Champions Trophy because of a failed yo-yo test, but wasn’t brought back after he cleared the endurance test.Yuvraj feels the same lack of trust in his replacements – Manish Pandey, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, Vijay Shankar, Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik – was the big reason for India’s failure at the 2019 World Cup, a tournament in which he felt India had no business exiting before the final. He warned India against doing the same with Pant in the lead-up to next year’s T20 World Cup in the light of public criticism of his batting by captain Virat Kohli, coach Ravi Shastri and batting coach Vikram Rathour.”That regret will be with me,” Yuvraj said in an interview with the news channel . “But people should be happy for me too that after such a grave illness [cancer during the 2011 World Cup], after struggling in domestic cricket for two years, working hard, I made a comeback and scored my highest ODI score [150 in January 2017, against England from 25 for 3]. That is also a big achievement. That is the other side. Yes, there will be regret, but there was a number of issues. There was no support, hardly any support from team management or people around. If that support had been there, I would have played another World Cup. Whatever cricket I have played, I have played on my own terms. I didn’t have a godfather. I feel proud that I have played so much cricket despite the illness.”Expanding on the subject of support (or the lack of it), Yuvraj spoke of the circumstances he was dropped in. “I remember, in the eight-nine ODIs I played, I won two Man-of-the-Match awards [including one against Pakistan in the 2017 Champions Trophy]. My strike rate was 98 and I was averaging 42-plus so I was doing really well in the middle order.”After the injury [during the West Indies tour just after the Champions Trophy], I was told to not play the last T20I and prepare for the Sri Lanka tour [later in 2017] and then suddenly the yo-yo test came in between. Whoever failed the test did not get selected. Suddenly there was a U-turn in my selection. And then, obviously, I had to go back and prepare for the yo-yo test, at the age of 36. After I cleared the yo-yo test, I was told to play domestic cricket, which I played.”Yuvraj felt these were just excuses on the part of the men in charge. “They actually thought I wouldn’t be able to clear the yo-yo test because it will be difficult at this stage,” he said. “And after that, obviously, ‘it’ll be easy to tell him’. I felt it was a bit of that [excuses]. ‘He wouldn’t be able to do the test.’ Once it happened, they got caught in a space where they didn’t know what to say to me. The thing was unfortunate. A guy who has played international cricket for 15-17 years, you should sit him down and tell him [why he is being dropped]. No one told me.”They didn’t tell Virender Sehwag, they didn’t tell Zaheer Khan. Compared to them, I haven’t played that much cricket. But regardless of who the player is, the person in charge should talk to them upfront that ‘this is the case, we are looking at the youngsters and we have taken this step’. You feel bad at first but you at least give them the credit that they were honest with you, that they told the truth to your face.”Rishabh Pant gets his shoelaces sorted by Yuvraj Singh during an IPL 2017 game•BCCI

He argued that the same lack of clarity, which led to lack of stability, hurt India at the World Cup, where India failed to recover from a top-order collapse in the semi-final against New Zealand. “I was dropped, then Manish Pandey came in, then one-two other players came in, then KL Rahul came in,” Yuvraj said. “KL was tried, then Raina came back, then they went with Rayudu. Rayudu played for eight-nine months, he scored 90 in NZ, Man of the Match, and your team should have been set there. Then before the World Cup, you lost to Australia 3-2, Rayudu had a bad tournament, suddenly Vijay Shankar came in.”And the highest score by an India No. 4 at the World Cup was 48. I don’t really understand that. The captain, coach and selectors should have known that No. 4 is a very important spot especially in conditions in England, where the ball seams. The No. 4 batsman has to be technically strong and has to be given a number of opportunities.”Vijay Shankar didn’t have that experience. Rishabh Pant didn’t have the experience. Dinesh Karthik, who was experienced, was sitting out and suddenly goes to bat in the semi-final. I really don’t understand what the think tank was thinking. If you want to get the best out of somebody, you have to make them feel secure. A player can never perform when he’s insecure. That was the big reason India didn’t win the World Cup. I thought India and England were the best teams in the World Cup. There was no reason why India shouldn’t have played the final.”Yuvraj said he saw shades of himself in the big-hitting wicketkeeper-batsman Pant, but felt the youngster needed more support and understanding from the team management. “The big hitters are always talked about, but I had support from [Sourav] Ganguly and there was nobody criticising me every day,” he said. “Everybody is criticising him. When things are not happening, talk to him, try to understand his mind. I feel that Rishabh’s issue is his mental make-up. How do you get the best out of his mental make-up? He has made runs in the Ranji Trophy and has scored two away Test hundreds; 150 in Australia, one in England. He’s played some big knocks. He’s shown his talent, he’s been fantastic in the IPL. He’s played eight-ten ODIs, so what are you expecting of him?ALSO READ: ‘Shouting or suppressing’ won’t help Pant, says Yuvraj”Obviously he didn’t pick the best shots to hit, but how will you get out his best? You can’t suppress him and get his best. You will have to put an arm around his shoulder, praise him, take him to the nets. You will have to sit with him in the evening, talk to him over dinner: ‘what’s going on in your mind?’ Somebody like the batting coach should take that opportunity to get the best out of him. Statements like “fearless and careless” is not going to help anybody’s case. It is going to spoil his mental make-up.”There was a dig at the selectors too. “That is the decision the selectors… well, selectors actually don’t make that many decisions… the team management has to sit with the chief selector and decide let’s make the guys secure first. If we lose, it’s okay. If we lose again, it’s still okay. The team is not that bad. It will still win. They need to groom guys.”Yuvraj also called for more support for wristspinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal as India opt for less attacking spinners who provide depth in batting. He said it was “stupid” to aim for depth at the cost of proper bowlers.

Gary Neville: Net worth, salary, wife, height, businesses, daughters & more

Gary Neville is a name that football fans have grown to become very familiar with over the past 30 or so years, due to his dazzling football career and now his thriving punditry and presenting career on television.

However, there's a whole lot more to uncover regarding the former Manchester United full-back, as believe it or not, he does have a life outside of television and football.

So, we have decided to compile a fact file on everything about Gary Neville.

How old is Gary Neville?

Gary Neville was born on 18th February 1975, in Bury, England.

This makes him 49 years of age.

Gary Neville's net worth

Neville has an estimated net worth of around £20 million.

The 49-year-old will have earned a handsome salary during his 19 years as footballer at the top level, as well as his appearances and punditry on television over the years, but he's also a businessman and entepreneur.

His ventures include co-owning League Two side Salford City, property development and other businesses.

Gary Neville's salary

Gary Neville pockets a rather healthy wage from Sky Sports every year, with his current salary at the broadcasting giants sitting at around £1.1 million.

As well as this, as mentioned above, the Englishman has been listed as a director of 56 businesses on Companies House, which he no doubt pays himself a salary out of.

There are no exact figures on the potential sum Neville received for appearing on Dragons Den, but the show in itself has seen him expand his portfolio with investments.

Gary Neville's height

Gary Neville's height varies from site to site, with TNT Sports stating that he's 178cm (5ft 8in) and Transfermarkt stating that he's 180cm (5ft 9in), so believe what you will.

Gary Neville's wife

Gary Neville is married to a woman called Emma Hadfield.

The pair have been together for around 20 years after meeting back in 2004 when Emma was a shop assistant. And, it didn't take long for them to tie the knot as three years later they got married.

Emma was a holistic therapy student but now offers support to Gary and helps raise their two children.

Gary Neville's daughters

Gary and Emma have two children, both daughters.

Their first child is a 15-year-old called Mollie and their second daughter, Hollie, was born just over a year later. She is 16 years of age.

Numerous videos have surfaced on Gary Neville's social media channels over the years of him and his family, as well as the odd travel picture.

Gary Neville on Dragons Den

Gary Neville made a guest appearance on Dragons Den back in January, and he took the opportunity to invest in two businesses, including a personal cinema idea in the hope of turning the concept into affordable housing.

It seems he's a man of many talents, as he left well-known Dragon Deborah Meaden impressed after his appearance, as she stated:

"[He was] utterly brilliant and owned that chair!!"

Gary Neville's businesses & investments

As was previously mentioned, Gary Neville is listed as a director for 56 different companies on Companies House.

One of his biggest and arguably most challenging investments was buying a 10% stake in Salford City back in 2014, alongside former Manchester United players Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Phil Neville, and Paul Scholes.

Outside of football, the entrepreneur has ventures in everything from hospitality and property to digital marketing, which have netted him millions of pounds.

One of his major enterprises is Hotel Football, a luxury hotel overlooking Old Trafford, and The Stock Exchange Hotel near Piccadilly Gardens, which is rated as one of the top hotels in Manchester.

That's not all though, as he also founded his firm 'Relentless', which is an investment company specialising in ventures in and around the Manchester area, as well as running 'Zerum', a property and construction consultancy business. It's certainly paid off too, with Gary's company securing a lucrative deal to work on the £120 million St Michael's project, which is a redevelopment plan that aims to build hotels, offices, apartments and a top restaurant in Manchester city centre.

Gary Neville's Dad

Gary Neville's father goes by the name of Neville Neville. Sadly, he passed away at age 65 back in 2015.

Interestingly, Gary's father was a close friend of Sir Alex Ferguson and had helped develop the famous ‘Class of 92’ Manchester United side, which included his sons, David Beckham and Paul Scholes. Mr Neville was also the agent of his two sons, Gary and Phil Neville, who both enjoyed successful football careers in the north of England.

He was also a former director at Bury Football Club, and was later appointed as an official club ambassador due to his close ties.

Tottenham chiefs convinced 25 y/o is a strong upgrade as they prepare talks

Tottenham Hotspur chiefs apparently rate one club's 25-year-old star in very high esteem, with the north Londoners now readying talks to sign him.

Spurs prepared to back Ange with signings this summer

Ange Postecoglou's debut season in the Spurs dugout has proved excellent thus far.

The Lilywhites are locked in a fierce battle with Aston Villa for a place in the top four and qualification for the Champions League next season, and while the overall success of Postecoglou's campaign will hinder on their finish to 2023/2024, it's safe to say Spurs have been a far more exciting watch under the Australian.

Tottenham's last five league games under Postecoglou

Spurs 3-1 Crystal Palace

Spurs 1-2 Wolves

Spurs 2-1 Brighton

Everton 2-2 Spurs

Spurs 3-2 Brentford

He's implemented a high-pressing, fast-paced and electric brand of football since his arrival from Celtic last summer, and it's won over large sections of the fan base. The feeling around N17 has greatly changed since the last days of Antonio Conte, with the north London club holding a greater appeal to players in the transfer market as a result.

Tottenham sensationally beat European heavyweights Bayern Munich and Barcelona to the signings of Radu Dragusin and Lucas Bergvall in January, and Spurs have been named as contenders for in-demand Brentford striker Ivan Toney in the summer as well.

Brentford's Ivan Toney

Reports suggest that, no matter what happens in regards to their top-four push, Postecoglou will be backed with new Tottenham signings later this year.

One of the key areas which Tottenham want to strengthen is in defence, with there being a belief that they wish to sign another centre-back after Dragusin. Spurs apparently want two "top level" centre-backs across 2024, and one player said to be attracting their interest is Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly.

Tottenham readying talks with Lloyd Kelly

According to Football Insider and journalist Wayne Veysey, Tottenham are readying talks with Kelly ahead of the summer window. The Englishman will be a free agent as things stand, meaning Spurs can sign him without paying a penny to Bournemouth. However, Postecoglou faces stiff competition for Kelly, as Liverpool and Newcastle United are also eyeing a move.

Clubs abroad, like contenders AC Milan, Juventus and "multiple" sides from Germany, can agree to a pre-contract as rules dictate overseas clubs can commence official negotiations over personal terms right now.

Lloyd Kelly

That being said, those within Spurs rate the 25-year-old highly. As per Veysey, club chiefs are "convinced" that Kelly would be a "strong option" for next season. The "rapid" Cherries ace, who can play both as a full-back and in the centre, was a target for Spurs last summer.

Indeed, Tottenham made a concerted effort to bring in Kelly on deadline day but to no avail, with chairman Daniel Levy now handed the chance to bring him in for nothing soon.

Winning back the Ashes in Australia top priority for new England head coach Chris Silverwood

Test team comes into focus as new chief mentor faces media for the first time since his promotion

England Head Coach Chris Silverwood speaks to the media•Getty Images

Winning back the Ashes in Australia is top of Chris Silverwood’s to-do list in his role as England’s new head coach.Speaking to the media for the first time since the ECB announced his elevation from the position of bowling coach to head coach across all formats on Monday, Silverwood said his priority was to work with Test captain Joe Root in driving the success of his team, which is ranked No. 4 in the world and saw Australia retain the Ashes in England for the first time in 18 years after a drawn series last month.”Job No. 1 would be helping Joe, putting a lot of support around Joe, making sure that the Test team starts moving forward and we keep moving forward, but in two years’ time when we go back to Australia, we can make a real impact out there,” Silverwood said.”The relationships certainly between myself and the two captains is key but equally I’ve got strong relationships now with all the players and all the backroom staff. I understand how the system works and how the team works as well, so I think the continuity from me as a person to the players is key.”Silverwood, who emerged as the frontrunner for the job last week after Alec Stewart pulled out of the recruitment process and Gary Kirsten was also interviewed, said he was comfortable with the increased responsibility of his new role, not least of which will be addressing concerns over England’s unsettled Test batting line-up.”The step up, obviously there’s going to be a lot more responsibility, obviously I’ve got to deal with you guys [the media] a lot more, which is fine, that is something I will feel my way into, but from a relationship point of view, not a lot will change,” he said. “I will have to step back a little bit, but equally, I want them [players] to know I am available and accessible to them as well.”I’ve already got some very good coaches around me, which is key for me as well, and some good people out there to give advice, but equally we’ll be looking to put the right people in the right places in that batting line-up and push the Test team forward.”Managing Director of England’s Men’s Cricket Ashley Giles said Silverwood would have a strong support network, including batting coach Graham Thorpe and Paul Collingwood, who has worked with the team as a contractor over the past year and is poised to be added to the coaching staff full-time. Giles also remained steadfast in his belief that there should be one coach across all three formats.”I think one man should lead,” Giles said. “The important thing around that one man is having the diversity in thought in the individuals who support him. So he’ll have a good group of coaches working under him. We are crossing the t’s and dotting the i’s on, hopefully, Paul Collingwood joining us full-time and Graham Thorpe is obviously there, has been there for some time.”Those two guys will offer Chris a huge amount of support and knowledge and knowledge of different experiences. The bowling coach position is obviously now vacant. I would like Chris to have a massive say in who that person is.”The 44-year-old Silverwood became England’s full-time fast bowling coach at the end of 2017. After his retirement from playing, Silverwood joined the coaching staff at Essex in 2010. He was appointed head coach ahead of the 2016 season, leading them to promotion that year and then on to the Championship title in 2017. Essex won this year’s Championship – T20 double with Anthony McGrath as head coach. On announcing the appointment, the ECB cited Silverwood’s intimate knowledge of the current England set-up along with his strong relationships within the county system, forged largely during his time at Essex, and Giles emphasised those credentials.”He’s a winner,” Giles said. “He could only prove that where he’s been able to prove it and that’s in the domestic game but the job he did at Essex was fantastic and we’re still seeing the legacy of that now. The sign of a good coach or a good manager is leaving a team in a better state than you found it and that team is still moving on without him at the helm.”No disrespect to Anthony McGrath or anyone else at the club right now but that’s his work still in action. His relationships and his knowledge of what we’re doing is really important but I think next to me here we have an exceptional bloke who cares deeply about what we’re doing and is a very good coach.”You can only be tested within the environments you’ve worked and he couldn’t have worked in a more pressurised environment, whether he was head coach or assistant coach, this summer, as a World Cup and an Ashes summer, and he’s proven he can deal with that.”Giles also saw Silverwood’s domestic links as crucial to strengthening ties between the local game and national teams.”Chris’s main role, he has to focus on what’s going on at the top, getting us to that place where we’re the most respected team in the world, we’re successful, we win in Australia,” Giles said. “But in all the other departments I’m very keen that we’re much more joined up with our development systems, because to compete across three formats over a period we’re going to need a bigger pool of players.”Through his experinces and his relationships he’ll have an eye on that and at the same time, that then needs to be joined up with the county system. There should be a flow there. At times I think that we’ve worked as a bit of an island and, not laying blame anywhere, but an overseas coach doesn’t always help that because they don’t always have the same knowledge or experiences of our system.”Silverwood’s first competitive series at the helm will be England’s tour of New Zealand, which includes a five-match T20 series starting on November 1 in Christchurch and two Tests against the Black Caps from November 21.
