Northants openers cash in as Glamorgan taste own medicine

After Glamorgan’s run-fest on the opening day, it was their own bowlers’ turn to toil on the second

After Glamorgan’s run-fest on the opening day, it was their own bowlers’ turn to toil on the second, as the Sophia Gardens pitch continued to offer little, if any, assistance.By the close, Northamptonshire’s openers, Ricardo Vasconcelos (126*) and Rob Newton (85*) had shared an unbroken partnership of 234. They still required a further 187 runs to avoid the follow on, but on the evidence so far, there is little prospect of a positive outcome on such an unresponsive strip. When play resumed, Glamorgan added 137 runs in the morning session, before declaring during the lunch break. They lost Billy Root to the fourth ball of the morning, when the debutant left-hander struck a low catch to backward point. Root and Kiran Carlson had added 172 for the fifth wicket, before Carlson, who added a further 10 runs to his overnight 101, was taken at first slip.Graham Wagg and Marchant De Lange quickly followed, but Chris Cooke then accelerated to strike a rapid undefeated 70 from 87 balls with a six and ten fours before calling a halt to the innings.Needing 421 to avoid the follow-on, Northants’ openers set off confidently. Vasconcelos – a 21-year-old from Johannesburg who has a Portuguese passport – struck two boundaries in Michael Hogan’s second over, and was the dominant partner against the five-man Glamorgan pace attack. After scoring 56 and 79 here last summer, Vasconcelos was dropped at second slip after scoring 21, and was uneasy at times against the legspin of Marnus Labuschagne, but he deserved his fourth first-class century which included 15 boundaries from 189 balls.Newton was no less effective, as the pair went past the 150-run stand, with Glamorgan, like Northants, resorting to seven bowlers. The most effective was Labuschagne, who was treated with respect and ended his opening spell with the commendable figures of 11-1-29-0.With the pitch as true as it was when the first ball was bowled on Thursday morning, Northants could look to bat on to an imposing total, or declare if and when they reach maximum batting points. The latter would be a popular decision with the spectators, especially if they witness a run-chase on the final day, otherwise there will be little to interest them if the game meanders to a draw.

Lasith Malinga grabs the limelight but Nuwan Pradeep turns the game

Pradeep hailed by his team for keeping them in the contest against Afghanistan

Sharda Ugra in Cardiff04-Jun-2019Two yorkers from Lasith Malinga crashed into the stumps and had zing bails light up the growing gloom around the Cardiff Wales Stadium and Afghan hearts, but by then Sri Lanka were as good as home.An oxygen-depleted win but a win all the same in their second game of the 2019 World Cup. Against the event’s sweetheart qualifiers, Afghanistan, by 34 runs (D/L method), which doesn’t prove anything except give Sri Lanka valuable points and a breather – and certainly for Malinga, his first win after 21 ODI defeats and one NR since July 6, 2017.WATCH – Highlights from the Afghanistan-Sri Lanka game on Hotstar (India only)Sri Lanka’s last ODI win against a frontline team outside of Asia was almost two years ago, against India at the Champions Trophy. In between then and now, purgatory, doubt, batting collapses (not that those have gone away) and one defeat after another.Tuesday’s win, says coach Chandika Hathurusingha gives the team the booster shot of confidence they needed. “We really needed a win. We haven’t got much success lately… We need this badly.”The Sri Lankans were to make the single change that may be what is needed to alter their narrative. Even if that meant putting all their eggs in the one basket that Cardiff offered them – picking five seamers in conditions with clouds overhead that made the swinging ball sing. It was this fifth horsemen that was to prevent their apocalypse.Nuwan Pradeep, hipster haircut, gunslinger walk, slinger action, biting pace and mean inswing – and left out on the weekend, turned up and did his job during the work week and produced his career-best ODI figures that made victory possible. Once it was done, the Sri Lankans gathered together in a huddle of relief, bunting Man of the Match Pradeep on his head over and over.Captain Dimuth Karunaratne’s grin was visible from a distance; never mind the fates and losing the toss again, his team had climbed out of the hole they had dug for themselves after recording the highest power play total of the competition and then imploding (7 for 36 in 11 overs.) Twenty runs across the last two wickets did take Sri Lanka past 200 but Hathurusingha said while the score had never seemed enough they had expected the seamers to “bowl well on the wicket, hit the deck hard and hit the seam”. The innings break had not featured a pep talk but a talking-to: “I tell them what has to be done. That they have to come and perform.”It is what the Sri Lankan bowlers did; the 15 wides at the end of the innings will cost them heavily elsewhere, but the extravagance of the Afghan batsmen allowed them to get away with it. The key was to just to pitch the ball up or back of a length, depending on who disliked what, hit the pitch hard when required to create dot ball pressure and extract the error. Or as Thisara Perera put it, “Keep our line and length and don’t panic.” Isuru Udana and Pradeep, the least experienced of the five, were particularly efficient in tandem, Pradeep sending home the two most dangerous Afghan batsmen on the day – the first, opener Hazratullah Zazai and the second captain, Gulbadin Naib.Hathurusingha said Pradeep had “single-handedly” kept Sri Lanka in the game. In conditions like Cardiff where the ball swings and often climbs, he finds himself in his element and there was no better day to put it out on display. Left-arm paceman Udana said of Pradeep: “He was the main man today he was the man who changed the game.” Pradeep had never played with a cricket ball until the age of 20, was discovered through a soft-ball competition, and has had a career for Sri Lanka restricted by a series of injuries. His last ODI was against New Zealand in January, missing out on the March tour of New Zealand due to injury. On Tuesday in Cardiff, Pradeep was quick enough and sharp enough to be the bowler Sri Lanka required to give their world cup campaign the buoyancy it needed.Nuwan Pradeep celebrates dismissing Rashid Khan•Getty Images

On our Smart Stats Forecaster, Naib’s wicket brought down Afghanistan’s win probability from 61% to just under 50%. When Mohammed Nabi went, it nosedived further from 44 to 28 and was spot on in predicting the trend of the contest. The Malinga yorkers were just the celebratory, flashy outlet Sri Lanka needed at the end of a tense game. The combined experience of the senior seamers – Malinga, Lakmal and Perera have played 455 ODIs between them – was to help pass on wisdom and calmness to the younger two. Udana, playing only his seventh ODI, used his experience from the Bangladesh and Afghan T20 leagues to offer insights into the Afghan batsmen to his team-mates. Malinga’s last two wickets with his signature yorkers were the Afghan Nos. 9 and 10 and ended the game, but it was Pradeep that had virtually dragged it out of Afghanistan’s reach and imagination.Sri Lanka on the field were far from ship-shape but they were to find moments of inspiration – Thisara’s diving catch off Zazai on the long-leg boundary, Karunaratne’s direct hit to run out Najibullah Zadran – that made them buzz, bouncing on the balls of their feet, backing each other up. There was Malinga, the angry lion in winter, patting Pradeep on the back after he conceded five wides in the 25th over in an attempt to bounce out the batsman. The Lankans had found the energy and the collective will to compete.Hathurusingha hoped this game was going to change Sri Lankan ODI fortunes, especially at the event where it is most urgent and most noticed. When asked about Malinga’s tongue lashing and whether he agreed with it, he said: “When you play for your country there is a lot of pride at stake. They are all hurting. I’m sure about that. They really, really want to perform well for the country. What Lasith said, whatever he said, is what he believes and I think all the players get a lot of confidence after this win for sure.”Now if only the batsmen could follow.

Newcastle could hijack collapsed deal for "very exciting" Antonio Nusa

Newcastle United could reportedly hijack a fellow Premier League club's move for a "very exciting" young forward, according to a new transfer update.

Newcastle transfer news

Eddie Howe will still be eyeing up new signings between now and the end of the January transfer window despite the club's difficulties navigating FFP, as he looks to give his side the best possible chance of finishing in the European places again this season. A constant flow of players have been linked with moves to Newastle over the past weeks and month, many of which are Premier League midfielders, with additions required in the middle of the park.

Chelsea's Conor Gallagher.

Chelsea ace Conor Gallagher has been backed to join the Magpies, for example, with the Blues seemingly happy to let him go, despite being a regular for much of this season. He is seen as a possible modern-day version of Yohan Cabaye at St James' Park.

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana is another contender to come in and fill the void left by the injured Joelinton, although the Merseysiders are understandably desperate to retain his services for at least the rest of the season. Philip Billing is seen as an option, too, with the Bournemouth man not dissimilar to the unavailable Newcastle hero, in terms of his physical stature and ability to contribute in the final third.

Newcastle eyeing Antonio Nusa hijack

According to a fresh update from Het Laatste Nieuws [via Sport Witness], Newcastle could look to hijack Brentford's deal for Club Brugge winger Antonio Nusa, after his move to the Bees stalled due to an issue found during the medical.

Antonio Nusa for Norway.

The Magpies are believed to be "lurking" in the wings, should the move fully fall through, seeing the 18-year-old as an exciting option to bring in. They have been following his situation closely in "recent days", and they could "take advantage of the opportunity" given to them by Brentford.

Nusa could be a brilliant long-term signing by Newcastle this month, although it clearly isn't going to be easy to snap him up, given the situation with Brentford. Former Norway international Gunner Halle has lauded him in the recent past, talking up his qualities as a footballer:

"Antonio has some extreme skills with the ball that make him very exciting. He can challenge, get past opponents and create imbalance, but what really sets him apart from others at that age is that he has finishing qualities as well."

Newcastle set to make late attempt to sign “superb” Premier League player

An approach for him looks likely this week.

ByHenry Jackson Jan 30, 2024

There is still a rawness to Nusa's game, which is only to be expected as his age, so Newcastle fans shouldn't expect consistent fireworks from the off, but he is a wide player who could turn into an influential attacking hero at St James' over time.

Tottenham look at signing £15.5m alternative to Nusa – Alasdair Gold

Brentford deal stalls with Nusa race open

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou was thought to have been dealt a serious blow over the weekend when Premier League rivals Brentford unceremoniously hijacked the Lilywhites' deal for Nusa.

The Bees, as reported by reliable sources, were believed to have agreed a deal to sign the 18-year-old ahead of Tottenham, despite the latter side being in rumoured talks for over a week.

It was a transfer twist few saw coming, especially given the plethora of reports suggesting Spurs were firmly in the driving seat to sign Nusa before January deadline day in just a few days time.

However, in yet another unexpected development regarding Nusa's future, Brentford's deal to sign the dazzling teenage winger stalled at the last minute, with Belgian transfer journalist Sacha Tavolieri (among others) claiming Nusa failed his medical.

Now, it is believed the race to sign Nusa on a buy-to-loan-back deal before February 1 is open again, and this could open the door for Spurs to make a last-gasp move after all (David Ornstein).

It'll now be interesting to see if Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, Chief Football Officer Scott Munn, technical director Johan Lange and the club's recruitment team opt to resurrect a deal for Nusa, regardless of his reported medical roadblocks.

Tottenham have looked at signing Nusa alternative in Samuel Iling-Junior

If not, there are alternatives to the Scandinavian, as reliable football.london journalist Alasdair Gold points out in his latest transfer piece. Indeed, it is believed Juventus winger Samuel Iling-Junior is among the names considered in that regard.

The 20-year-old is struggling for starting places under Massimiliano Allegri, making zero in Serie A this season with all of his 12 appearances coming off the substitutes' bench.

As per Gold, Spurs have looked at signing IIling-Junior among a host of other young wingers as they continue their policy of buying young stars for the future.

Previous reports have claimed he'd cost around £15.5 million to prise away from Turin, with members of the media like Dean Jones calling him an "exciting" player.

Another reporter, Michele Neri, has also likened the "very quick" forward to AC Milan star Rafael Leao.

Passions run high as Ben Duckett digs deep to save Nottinghamshire's blushes

Visitors bounce back with determination to secure hard-fought draw, but remain at foot of the table

Warwickshire bade a temporary farewell to their Headquarters after play, with the ICC ready to move in and begin its rebranding of Edgbaston as a World Cup venue. Higher profile games await, contested by more familiar names with greater hype and richer reward. But don’t assume that any of the internationals will be as tense or passionately-contested as stages of this Championship fixture.Hands were shaken at five to six when Warwickshire accepted that time had run out on their push for success. By that stage, Nottinghamshire had opened a lead of 60 runs with two wickets in hand and only five overs remaining. Enough batsmen played with a resolution altogether missing in their first innings. While Jeetan Patel continued to wheel away and wickets fell in clusters, Wednesday’s wholesale collapse was not to be repeated.Nor was the worst of the behaviour. Steven Mullaney, the Nottinghamshire captain, confirmed that his side had received a Level One warning for their conduct and it would be surprising if individual sanctions did not follow against at least one player. “I think the game was played hard, very hard and there were a couple of incidents that would have been borderline,” he admitted. Both Mullaney and Jim Troughton, the Warwickshire first team coach, could not suppress wry smiles when asked whether proceedings had been more feisty than usual. “It was an enjoyable game,” Troughton said. “There were some emotions, some frustrations flying around. Bowlers are grumpy old things and I don’t think that should be taken away.”A heavy morning shower lopped five overs off the quota to make the task slightly easier for Nottinghamshire. Their second-wicket pair of Ben Duckett and Chris Nash eased back into the groove with cheap early runs and it was not until the 75th over, by which time they had added 199, that Warwickshire broke through. Four wickets then fell for 16 runs, but Mullaney and Tom Moores rebuilt before themselves falling in successive overs. New batsmen tended to fall through early-innings footwork; once set they could hold firm.Duckett proved a great example. His travails as an England player against R Ashwin seemed a distant memory as he thwarted Patel, getting behind the ball rather than pushing without a second line of defence. Across his career he has tended to clear up mess rather than avoid it altogether and his 140 from 237 balls in just shy of five hours did most to undo the damage first time around.England still have him on the radar; he made his T20 international debut only last month. Here, the man sometimes known as the Pocket Rocket was just as much the Pocket Block-It, mixing the trademark cuts that come relatively easily to players of his short build with patience and discretion. At the other end, Nash (85) was steadiness personified and gave an object lesson in playing pace late and with light hands. It took a brilliant, left-handed catch at short leg by Sam Hain to remove Duckett, giving Patel his second wicket of the innings. Number three soon followed, Will Rhodes reacting quickly at slip to account for Joe Clarke. Hain then took his fifth catch of the match with the second new ball in play to complete a miserable comeback for Samit Patel, whose place in the Nottinghamshire side must again be up for discussion.Much rested now on Nash, but he inexplicably missed one from Henry Brookes to become a clear leg-before victim. Although Patel returned to the attack with the ball only eight overs old, the surface did not offer the bounce or pace of turn that he wanted. Even so, the wicket of Mullaney represented his 22nd in the past two games. Figures of 10 for 88 usually belong to a winner. Not this time. Both sides ultimately left with reason for hope. “It was an incredible effort from us, from one through to eleven,” Troughton said. “They showed the brand of cricket they should pride themselves on for the rest of the season.” Ryan Sidebottom is due to return to second team action next week and Olly Stone should be fit by the end of the month. But Ian Bell is making a slower recovery than expected from foot surgery and is due to see a specialist on Friday.Mullaney bristled at a suggestion that Nottinghamshire had lacked bravery in the first innings. Instead, he thought, the loss of early wickets to bad strokes had simply opened a door for the home side. “We have not batted well enough since the first game of the season against Yorkshire, we know that, but hopefully [our second innings] will turn things around,” he said. It needs to; they remain bottom of the table. The crowd was small but constant through the day, determined to savour every minute in the knowledge that their side will not return until July 21 and then under the T20 moniker of Birmingham Bears. Three solitary figures sat as far apart as seemed possible in the Eric Hollies stand, as though part of a geometric exercise to construct the biggest triangle in the vast expanse of seating. Yesterday it was a place of quiet contemplation. Three weeks on Sunday, England and India will meet here. It will be cacophonous.

Klopp could now bench 6/10 Liverpool star after Arsenal

On Sunday, Liverpool lost 3-1 against Premier League title rivals, Arsenal. The sides have seemed to have developed something of a rivalry over the past couple of seasons.

The Gunners' win against Liverpool was arguably one of their best performances of the season with veteran, Jorginho, putting in a stellar performance.

This is largely due to Mikel Arteta's men having most of their first-team available for selection. Whilst Liverpool's performance was below par, this could be due to the number of injuries they sustained in the lead-up to the game.

Throughout the Premier League campaign thus far, a number of Liverpool's players have had stand-out seasons, although one man, excluding Alisson and Virgil van Dijk's mishaps, was below par at the Emirates.

What Curtis Jones did wrong against Arsenal

Curtis Jones' performance on Sunday certainly left a lot to be desired.

His outing was quite possibly the Englishman's worst showing of the season by a country mile. More often than not this term, the Academy graduate has been one of the first names on Klopp's team-sheet but could find himself back on the bench next time out.

On this occasion, although, Jones was the second-best starting midfielder for Liverpool and managed to garner a rating of 6/10, as per Liverpool ECHO, it wasn't his finest afternoon.

Jones' poor display is further backed up by Sofascore as the midfielder only managed to touch the ball 57 times throughout the entirety of the game. To put that into context, Alisson managed to touch the ball 60 times, which outlines how little of an impact the 23-year-old had on the game.

Furthermore, he lost possession of the ball on 12 occasions and only won two of his seven duels, being bypassed on a number of occasions in the centre of the pitch,

The 3/10 Liverpool star who was as bad as Alisson & Van Dijk v Arsenal

Jurgen Klopp’s side slumped to an insipid defeat at the Emirates Stadium.

ByAngus Sinclair Feb 4, 2024

During Sunday's clash, it felt as if he had little to no energy after the start of the game. But, when he was moved to a deeper role after the interval, he did seem to get more of a handle on the tie.

The 23-year-old will be looking to improve his performance before the Reds' next game against Burnley on the 10th February, otherwise Klopp may look to replace him with one of his teammates.

Two players could fulfil Curtis Jones' role

As the season goes on and Liverpool get ever closer to winning the Premier League title, they will need all the help that they can get.

Hence, why the fitness of the Reds' first-team squad will be essential towards the latter end of the campaign.

Crucially, Thiago featured for the first time under Klopp in Sunday's clash after sustaining an injury all the way back in April. Since arriving at Anfield in 2020, the Spain international has sustained a number of injuries.

However, when fit, he has often been one of Liverpool's best players. He plays an important role in the side and is often lauded by fans and pundits alike, notably described as a "world-class" figure by Diogo Jota. Although he doesn't contribute to many goals, he is often the pass before the assist.

Indeed, Thiago is the first port of call between the defence and the midfield, meaning his off-the-ball work is often a key part to his game. The 32-year-old could be an ideal stop-gap for Liverpool as Jones attempts to re-find his good form.

Another option Klopp could look towards is Dominik Szoboszlai. The midfielder was absent from Sunday's clash due to injury, but throughout the season, he has arguably been Liverpool's best player after Mohamed Salah.

manu-kone-dominik-szoboszlai-liverpool-opinion

His range of passing and creativity are second to none and this is proven by his nine goal contributions this season, a tally bettered by no other midfielder in the squad. Once the Hungary international has returned to the first-team fold, he will likely be the player Klopp chooses.
