Anna Peterson, Lea Tahuhu set up eight-wicket win for New Zealand

Suzie Bates and Amy Satterthwaite hit half-centuries to pull off slim chase and give the home side a consolation win

Anna Peterson and Lea Tahuhu did most of the damage, after Amy Satterthwaite asked India to bat, picking up seven wickets between them to shoot the visitors out for 149. Suzie Bates and Satterthwaite then helmed the chase, both hitting half-centuries as New Zealand got home in 29.2 overs with eight wickets in hand.India secured the series after winning the first two matches, but the points from this victory were useful for New Zealand, who have now moved back to the No. 2 spot ahead of India, only behind Australia, on the Women’s Championship table.Mithali Raj on her 200th ODI appearance

On Friday, Mithali Raj became the first woman to play 200 ODIs. Among active cricketers, team-mate Jhulan Goswami has the most caps after Raj – 174, with England’s Jenny Gunn at No. 3 with 143.
After the game, Raj said about the landmark, “When I started, I definitely didn’t think I would come so far. My main aim initially was to represent the country, wear the India colours, and then be one of the core members of the team. But never did I think I would continue to play for so long.
“When you have a long career, there are different elements that come into your reasoning. But one thing has always been to constantly thrive and constantly work on my game to suit the different conditions and different areas of my game, and trying to keep up with the international standards is very important.
“I’ve seen highs and lows. When you have a long career, that’s part of it.”

It was a welcome change for New Zealand, whose bowlers had struck a grand total of three times in the first two games. Bar Deepti Sharma, none of the Indian batsmen stuck around for long enough to make a difference as Peterson returned 4 for 28 and Tahuhu 3 for 26. From then on, India were playing catch-up.Sophie Devine dropped down the batting order and Bates had a new partner in Lauren Down, and the two looked good for more than the 22 they got together. Down was run out backing up at the non-striker’s end in the seventh over when Bates’s drive caught Goswami’s fingers on its way to the stumps. But Bates and Satterthwaite made sure the advantage wasn’t lost with an 84-run stand for the second wicket, the runs coming in under 14 overs, till Bates fell after scoring her 25th ODI half-century. It was just a matter of knocking the runs off after that, and Satterthwaite did so in style, hitting her 20th ODI half-century, an unbeaten 74-ball 66. Devine was unbeaten on 17 at the close.India’s innings never quite gathered momentum, looking like it was headed for good things only when Deepti and Harmanpreet Kaur collaborated for the fourth wicket.Smriti Mandhana fell first to Peterson and Jemimah Rodrigues, the other opener, followed soon after being done in by Tahuhu. Mithali Raj, who was playing her 200th ODI, didn’t last too long either, and India were tottering at 39 for 3 at that stage, in the 14th over.Deepti and Kaur steadied the innings briefly with their 48-run stand, the latter showing intent with a couple of hits to the boundary, but after she fell, becoming Peterson’s second victim, there wasn’t much support for Deepti. D Hemalatha and Goswami did get into double figures, but Deepti’s 52 stood out in an otherwise sorry-looking batting card. The two teams now play a series of three T20Is, the first of them in Wellington on February 6.

GABIGOL CHEGA AO 100º JOGO EM GRANDE FASE

What Aaron Ramsey said about Jean-Clair Todibo as Spurs open transfer talks

Tottenham have now opened January transfer talks to sign a "very ambitious" player after former Arsenal star Aaron Ramsey heaped praise on him.

Postecoglou confirms Spurs "working" on January

Lilywhites boss Ange Postecoglou is eager to bring in fresh faces next month, with his Spurs side currently having to deal with numerous injury and suspension problems yet again.

Ange decides new top transfer target with Spurs "lining up a stunning move"

The player is now “leading the way” to join Tottenham.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 17, 2023

Postecoglou's high-octane, aggressive style is taking some getting used to for certain squad members.

Indeed, Cristian Romero's supension earlier in the campaign, coupled with Micky van de Ven's long-term hamstring injury, severely weakened Spurs' back line at one point. Yves Bissouma and Destiny Udogie are also now unavailable through suspension, joining the long list of absentees.

Tottenham's lack of squad depth has been a real talking point this season, and Postecoglou has confirmed that his side are busy preparing for early moves in January as a result.

"It is challenging, [but] the reason [we want to do business early] is obviously where we're at injury-wise and the players we're going to miss," said Postecoglou on Tottenham's transfer plans last week (via Standard Sport).

"It is a challenge, I get that, but everyone at the club is working hard to get the best outcomes for us and we’ll see how it goes.”

According to recent reports, Spurs especially want a new centre-back as cover for van de Ven and Romero, while sporting director Johan Lange is also chasing the signing of a left-winger.

Tottenham open Todibo talks after Ramsey praise

According to journalist Rob Guest, writing for football.london, an update has come to light on Tottenham's chase for rumoured defensive target Jean-Clair Todibo.

The Nice defender, who's been excellent for them in Ligue 1 this season, is now a serious target for Postecoglou and co. Indeed, Spurs have opened talks to sign Todibo ahead of January as their manager looks to bolster his backline,

Guest adds that centre-back is certainly a position of real priority for the club next month, and Todibo could tick a number of boxes with his progressive passing and ball-carrying ability.

This comes after ex-Gunners star and Wales international Ramsey heaped praise on the 23-year-old Frenchman earlier this year, tipping him to go to the very top.

"He’s playing alongside one of the most experienced players in Dante, who has played at the very highest level now for a number of years," said Ramsey on Todibo (via Get French Football News).

"For Jean-Clair to have that experience next to him is invaluable. He’s a great guy, a great player and very ambitious, so there is no reason that he can’t go all the way to the top and represent France.”

Former India pacer VRV Singh brings curtain down on 'incomplete career'

Genuinely quick when he burst on the scene, VRV played five Tests and two ODIs between 2006 and 2007 but his career was blighted by injuries

VRV Singh, the India fast bowler who played five Tests in 2006-07, has announced his retirement after a career blighted by injury and characterised by unfulfilled promise.VRV, 34, also played two ODIs alongwith the five Tests between 2006 and 2007 as part of a new-look Indian pace attack, but mediocre returns – eight wickets in Tests and none in ODIs – meant he didn’t get a look-in again, with injuries not helping his cause.Moments to cherish

“I played in South Africa, in India’s first Test win (in Jo’burg). That innings (29) was a good one, it helped the team, and I was happy to contribute. I was in the squad when we won a Test match in Perth (in 2008), and I also played the Test series in the West Indies when we won in 2006. Those are precious moments. I am happy to have been part of those moments.”

His last representative game was in 2014 for Punjab in the Ranji Trophy, when he returned 2 for 65 and 5 for 43 against Jammu and Kashmir to take his first-class tally up to 121 wickets from 29 games, but was laid low by injury the following season again.”I kept trying to make a comeback, but if it wasn’t my ankle, it was my back. You cannot fool around with your body. I had surgeries, rehab … after 2014, I didn’t play at all for a few years, but I trained and tried to play in 2018. But I couldn’t make it, so I started thinking about the future,” VRV, who also played with Kings XI Punjab in the IPL, told ESPNcricinfo.”It’s not an overnight decision, but once I couldn’t get fit for the 2018-19 season, I thought it made sense to leave. Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh) encouraged me a lot, the PCA (Punjab Cricket Association) also backed me, and I gave it my best. But, unfortunately, it didn’t happen. So I thought it best to retire and think about what to do next.”A product of India’s robust Under-19 system, VRV made his Punjab debut in 2005 when still 21 years old as a tall, well-built paceman. Genuinely fast but often wayward, VRV made his international debut in an ODI series at home against England in 2006, but didn’t have much to show for his efforts. The Test debut followed soon, in the West Indies, but it was as unremarkable as his entry in ODIs. His best performance in India colours, interestingly, came with the bat, when he scored 29 from No. 11 in India’s historic Test win in Johannesburg in December 2006.”I am lucky, and very happy, that I played for India. Not many players get that opportunity. But, of course, there are a lot of regrets. I did well in the Under-19s. I played for India when I was still young. I had a good start, but yes, when I look back, it was an incomplete career, I lost my golden years to injury,” he said.”What I had foreseen for myself didn’t happen. I tried, but I guess it wasn’t written in my destiny.”As for the future, VRV isn’t sure of where he is headed, but wants to “stay in touch with the game”. As a coach, perhaps? “Maybe, but I don’t know. I will speak to PCA and see. I have just announced my retirement, I haven’t had time to think about the future yet,” he said.

Klopp now eyeing Liverpool transfer to sign senior forward in shock deal

After failing to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in a full season under Jurgen Klopp last time out, a title challenge seemed nothing more than a pipe dream for Liverpool. Their summer rebuild soon changed that, however, as Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister replaced the likes of Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita, Fabinho and others. Now sitting top of the Premier League at the halfway mark, leading shock challengers Aston Villa by two points, the Reds are on course to lift the ultimate silverware once more.

Their position may yet be strengthened in the January transfer window too, with Mohamed Salah's absence due to AFCON duties pushing Liverpool into action, according to reports.

Liverpool transfer news

Potentially losing Salah for up to five weeks during AFCON, the next month could prove to be season-defining for Liverpool. The Egyptian has once again been one of the standouts in the Premier League with not even Erling Haaland scoring more than his total of 14 goals. What could be a concern for Klopp though, is the fact that Liverpool's second-highest Premier League goalscorer is Darwin Nunez, who has scored just five goals. And that could see the Reds make an unexpected move this month.

Liverpool forward Mo Salah.

According to Football Insider, FSG and Klopp are eyeing a move to sign a senior forward for Liverpool in the January transfer window, in what the report describes as a "shock deal" after initial expectations that the Reds wouldn't be very active.

Just who that experienced forward may be remains to be seen, but it would reportedly be a loan deal to cover for the absence of Salah and potentially any other absences in the remainder of the season.

In what could be one of the wisest decisions in the title race, those at Anfield could reverse the damage that could be done without Salah by landing an experienced solution.

Experienced forward would only help Nunez

Whilst Nunez has improved for Liverpool this season, the former Benfica man remains an erratic forward at times who lacks the experience of a clinical striker. That's where Liverpool could kill two birds with one stone this month.

They could welcome a veteran forward whom Nunez could shadow and learn from in a crucial period for his Anfield career. Meanwhile, that same player could use their own experience to step into the biggest moments of the title race in an attempt to make all the difference. Nunez's stats certainly show that he's on the cusp of bursting into life, as Sam Maguire highlighted on X. But added experience will do the Uruguayan no harm.

Given that Nunez and Cody Gakpo are both only 24-years-old, when the title race intensifies, it would hardly be unwise for Klopp to have some experience alongside Salah to turn to at Liverpool. And if the Reds boss finally gets the best out of the aforementioned duo in the process, then it will be seen as the ultimate victory in the transfer market.

Spurs could repeat Dele Alli masterclass by signing EFL "showman"

The January transfer window has been open for two weeks and Tottenham Hotspur have been one of the busiest sides in the Premier League so far.

Ange Postecoglou has not wasted any time to improve his squad after a difficult first half of the campaign, due to injuries and suspensions throughout the team.

Timo Werner has been brought in on a season-long loan from Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig to add to the club's depth out wide and in the number nine position.

Meanwhile, Radu Dragusin has been signed on a permanent deal from Serie A side Genoa to compete with the likes of Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, and Ben Davies.

His arrival also allowed the club to sanction an exit for stalwart Eric Dier, who has joined Harry Kane at German giants Bayern Munich on an initial loan.

They still have two weeks left to complete more business in the market to give themselves the best chance of achieving success in the months to come.

Spurs interest in Championship showman

At the start of the month, The Daily Mail reported that Norwich City forward Jonathan Rowe is one of a number of players the club have their eye on.

They are not the only Premier League side eyeing up the England U21 international this month, though, as a host of other teams are interested in him.

Football Insider reported in October that Aston Villa and Crystal Palace are both keeping tabs on his performances for the Canaries in the second tier.

However, the outlet added that Norwich will not be willing to entertain any offers for his services in January as they want to keep hold of their top talent until the end of the season as they battle for promotion to the top-flight.

Norwich forward Jonathan Rowe.

This means that Spurs, alongside Villa and Palace, may need to wait until the summer to be able to strike a deal to sign the talented youngster, who was in the academy set-up at Carrow Road when current Tottenham star James Maddison was strutting his stuff in Norfolk.

Norwich's refusal to sell him this month means that there is no potential fee mentioned for him and that may remain the case until the end of the season, which makes it hard to gauge how viable a deal is for Spurs from a financial perspective.

However, if it is within the budget then Tottenham must push to secure his services as Postecoglou could repeat the masterclass the club played with Dele Alli – who arrived from a lower league club to make an instant impact.

Dele's incredible journey

The impressive attacking midfielder started his career with MK Dons in League One and burst onto the scene as a regular during the 2013/14 campaign.

Dele produced 22 goals and 12 assists in 72 League One appearances in his two full seasons at first-team level for the club to earn himself a transfer to Spurs halfway through the 2014/15 campaign – and loaned back to MK for the remainder of the season – for a fee of £5m.

Former Spurs star Dele Alli.

It did not take him any time to adjust to top-flight football as the teenage whiz racked up ten goals and nine assists in 33 Premier League games during his first term with Tottenham.

He followed that up with an outstanding 18 goals and nine assists in 37 league matches for the Lilywhites during the 2016/17 campaign, before a return of nine goals and 11 assists in 36 outings the following season.

However, the England international has not played more than 15 league games in a campaign since the 2019/20 season and has not been able to get back to the sublime form he displayed in his first few years at Spurs.

Dele bravely opened up to Gary Neville on The Overlap YouTube channel about his personal trauma and struggles that contributed to his drop-off in form on the pitch in recent seasons, which makes the success he did have early in his career all the more impressive.

There is no doubt that the 27-year-old whiz was a phenomenal player for Tottenham at his best as he seamlessly made the transition from the Football League to the Premier League, which is what Rowe will be hoping to replicate.

The statistics that show why Rowe could be the next Dele

The Norwich star has been in fantastic form in the Championship this season and has showcased his immense potential by tearing the league up at the age of 20.

He did, however, make 13 appearances in the Premier League as an 18/19-year-old during the back end of the 2021/22 campaign and registered one assist as his side were relegated from the top-flight.

Rowe then missed 42 of the club's 46 Championship matches through injury last season and returned last summer to finally make his mark on the pitch.

The 20-year-old wizard has dazzled defences with his frighteningly quick feet and exceptional finishing – most recently against Hull on Friday night.

As you can see in the clip above, he has the skill, balance, and composure to weave inside and out of opposition players at pace whilst also being able to provide superb end product.

Rowe has been lethal in front of goal for the Canaries so far this season. He has racked up 11 goals from just 4.29 xG in 25 Championship appearances, which shows that the young gem has been incredibly efficient in the final third.

The Norwich magician, who was described as a "showman" by Sky Sports commentator Gary Weaver, has also completed 1.2 dribbles and made 1.0 key passes per match for his side.

Impressively, the exciting whiz has also won 52% of his physical duels and made 2.1 tackles and interceptions per game across his 25 league outings, which shows that he has dealt with the physical side of the Championship and does not get bullied by opposition defenders in 50/50 battles.

Therefore, Rowe appears to have all the qualities needed to make the step up to the top-flight due to his overperformance in front of goal, his physical attributes, and his age.

This is why Spurs must swoop to sign the young gem as he could be the next Football League talent to shine in North London, just as Dele did at his peak.
