Newcastle fans want to give Mitrovic a second chance

Newcastle fans are starting to wonder if it’s a mistake to let Aleksandar Mitrovic leave, after the striker scored a hat trick on international duty with Serbia.

It seems to have been abundantly clear since January that Newcastle’s Mitrovic has no future on Tyneside, but that’s starting to look like a big mistake from Rafael Benitez.

The feisty striker is undoubtedly the most natural number nine in the Magpies’ current squad, but his work rate and attitude have been questioned on plenty of occasions, and he has seemingly been at odds with Benitez for quite some time.

The Spanish magician hasn’t done much wrong since taking over on Tyneside, but his January decision to send the striker on loan and bring in an injured Islam Slimani is starting to look more and more bizarre.

After grabbing 12 Championship goals with Fulham, Mitrovic scored a wonderful hat trick in his country’s 5-1 win over Bolivia on Saturday, and the third strike was really special.

Liverpool fans push for Wilshere move after Arsenal midfielder confirms exit

Jack Wilshere’s 17-year spell at Arsenal will soon be coming to an end after the midfielder decided to seek pastures new.

The 26-year-old has been with the Gunners for his entire career so far, but a lack of game time has led to his departure.

In a statement posted on Instagram, the England international confirmed that he had agreed to take a pay cut in order to stay at the club, but a talks with new manager Unai Emery made up his mind.

Wilshere revealed that the coach was happy for him to sign a new contract, but informed the midfielder that he would not be a regular feature in the team this season.

The Englishman will be a free agent from next month when his current deal expires, which could spark a scramble for his signature.

Liverpool are not a club that have been regularly linked with Wilshere and they are already flush with midfielders, but some fans want the ex-Arsenal man.

Top Premier League performers at the World Cup thus far

The 2018 FIFA World Cup has just passed the halfway mark, and we are already starting to get a good idea of the teams that will be involved in the latter stages. There is huge Premier League representation at the tournament with 107 players from the English top division taking part in Russia. In this article we take a look at some of the best performing Premier League players at the World Cup.

1. Harry Kane, England & Tottenham Hotspur

England are the only squad in Russia this summer with a squad made up entirely of players playing in their home nation. Leading those players is Captain Harry Kane, who at time of writing leads the goal-scoring charts with 5 goals in 2 games.

The impressive 24-year-old has notched 108 times in 153 Premier League games for Tottenham and has finally captured that form for the national team. If Kane continues his rich-vein of goal-scoring form, there’s every chance that England could win the World Cup for the first time since 1966.

2. Romelu Lukaku, Belgium & Manchester United

Chasing Kane for the Golden Boot is Manchester United’s blustering forward Lukaku, who scored a brace in Belgium’s opening two group games. Since moving to Old Trafford, Lukaku has fit in well and hit 16 league goals in his first with United.

Question marks remain over Lukaku’s ability to score in important games against the best opposition. Despite his good start to the tournament, it remains to be seen whether he can perform when Belgium face sterner opposition.

3. David Ospina, Arsenal & Colombia

Arsenal’s stand-in goalkeeper suffers from what is affectionately known as David Healy syndrome. When playing for his club side, he has often flattered to deceive and Gunners’ fans have never had complete confidence in his abilities.

However, for Colombia he has been a rock in recent tournaments. In the 2015 Copa America, Ospina made a string of stunning saves to hold Argentina to a stalemate, one of which was an incredible double save from Lionel Messi.

Following Los Cafeteros 3-0 victory over Poland, they look well-set to reach the knockout stages and Ospina’s performances could be vital to their ambitions.

4. Olivier Giroud, France & Chelsea

After scoring 4 goals in 8 qualifying matches the towering Frenchman has established himself as a prominent feature in Didier Deschamp’s sides. Giroud brings something different to an otherwise fast but small attack.

Giroud has never been a truly prolific striker, but in spells at Arsenal and Chelsea he has scored 76 goals and provided 24 assists. Which is an overall contribution of 100 goals in 193 Premier League appearances.

5. Dejan Lovren, Croatia & Liverpool

Since his high-profile move from St. Mary’s to Anfield, Lovren has been a figure of derision amongst rival fans and pundits. Several lapses in concentration have been punished during his time with Liverpool yet his game has improved remarkably since the arrival of Virgil Van Dijk.

Lovren was part of the Liverpool side that reached last season’s Champions League final and he has played solidly so far for Croatia. After an opening win against Nigeria, Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic inspired the Croatians to a 3-0 win over Argentina.

Keeping a firm defence will be key for Croatia as they look to progress through the knockout phases, will Dejan Lovren help them to an unlikely World Cup win?

Wilshere edging closer to Fenerbahce switch, Arsenal fans react

When Jack Wilshere announced that he will be leaving Arsenal this summer when his contract expires, many began to debate where the midfielder would be moving to.

Numerous Premier League clubs have been linked to the 26-year-old’s signature, but it seems that he has chosen a surprising destination.

On Thursday, Turkish-Football reported that Wilshere is poised to hold talks with Fenerbahce regarding a transfer.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”255898″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Arsenal’s opening fixtures for the 201819 Premier League season”]

The England international, who has had a string of injury problems over the years, is available on a free.

If he does opt to move to the Super Lig club, it would be a rather strange decision in terms of his future prospects with the national team.

Who do you think will win the World Cup? Let us know here and win any World Cup shirt of your choice.

The midfielder failed to make it into Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad, despite spending the majority of last season at Arsenal injury-free.

Playing in Turkey may not increase his chances of making it back into the England fold, but he could achieve regular minutes on the pitch.

England’s reliance on Tottenham players could be their downfall in Russia

For a team who would have been happy with a good showing in a valiant semi-final defeat, England are fast rivaling the favourites for this World Cup.

Playing a tape to the end is an exercise that the 2018 edition of the tournament has shown to be futile, as some of the biggest favourites have been dumped out of the competition, but England remain – and their potential path to the final could hardly be easier.

It might be hubristic to speak in such terms, but the facts are there for all to see – England are the biggest name team in their side of the draw, and a place in the final should be their minimum aim for the rest of the campaign.

And yet there is a worry about the Three Lions. The same one we could have raised about Spain, Germany and Argentina: have England really convinced?

A 6-1 victory over Panama was certainly convincing, but then that was only Panama. A last-gasp win over Tunisia sounds bad, but arguably that was England’s best game of the tournament; certainly it was in the first 30 minutes. And then there was Belgium – a game which told us absolutely nothing about Gareth Southgate’s team and its ability to go far in this tournament.

[brid playlist=”4766″ player=”12034″ title=”World Cup 2018″]

So onto a knockout round where England could well be tested seriously for the first time, and in a game where failure means the plane home.

We might also see the steel the Three Lions hold within.

Much has been made of the fact that the countries Pep Guardiola has managed in have won the last two World Cups: Spain when he was in charge of Barcelona and Germany when he had the reigns of Bayern Munich. But England’s spine doesn’t come from Manchester but further south – in north London.

England are a side filled with Tottenham players, and that’s part of what makes them so exciting – Mauricio Pochettino’s side are one of the most exciting in the world and they undeniably fit together as a team.

And yet, you wonder if that will just make England Spursy.

For the last two years, those Tottenham players in the squad have shown promise only to come up short. They’ve been to the semi-finals of the FA Cup only to lose at Wembley both times. They’ve dazzled in the Champions League only to see a wiley old team of grizzled pros manage to somehow get themselves over the line.

Most worryingly for England, 2016 could be the omen.

2015/16 was the year Leicester City won the Premier League title. They did so in remarkably similar fashion to what we’re witnessing in this World Cup. The biggest and best teams fell by the wayside and Leicester found themselves in a title race with Tottenham. Spurs themselves weren’t established as a top team that season, but they should still have been finishing above the Foxes.

This year, if England are relying on Tottenham players to get them over the line in a World Cup Three Lions fans really are salivating over, you wonder if that isn’t a worrying turn of events.

Is it time for this Arsenal star to finally get what he wants?

For a long time Theo Walcott has begged Arsene Wenger to be a centre forward. Each time it looked like he may be granted his wish, either a new player got the nod ahead of him or he was told his best position for the good of the team was elsewhere.

Injuries have slowed down his development and it would have been logical to assume he was never going to be the main striker for Arsenal.

Then something changed. Wenger went from doubter to believer. Walcott persisted and gave glimpses it wasn’t just some schoolboy fantasy to lead the line but ability driven belief.

[ffc-gal cat=”arsenal” no=”5″]

Olivier Giroud has had to accept a shared role as standalone striker. When he was at his scoring peak for the Gunners this wouldn’t have sounded feasible. A common belief is that Giroud is good but lacks the next level attributes to make him one of Europe’s finest. It’s this acceptance that has made Arsene’s lack of movements for a world class striker in the transfer market all the more infuriating for Arsenal fans. Perhaps he was holding fire on a giving away a large transfer fee because he’d seen true potential in Walcott.

There comes a point where a young player becomes the talent his club hopes he can be and reaches his potential, or fades into mediocrity. The idea of potential being a marketable commodity has allowed for large fees and long periods of patience in recent times, Anthony Martial and Mario Balotelli respectively fulfilling those roles.

More often than not a player gets nowhere near their perceived ceiling (Aaron Lennon) and becomes a squad player. There was a danger this could have happened to Walcott. Instead he has come of age.

His days playing in less preferable roles have added to his game. He displays good link up play, at times doubling up as an extra midfielder, whilst always having an eye to attack and take the lead of the forward line again. He showed early on with a hat trick for England against Croatia, when he was just 19-years-old, his killer instinct. Now he has been unleashed as a matured player as part of the forward line expect him to grow into the monster he always threatened.

It’s not just Arsenal that will benefit, England will too. How does a striker that can put in a shift as well as scare defenders when on the ball sound? Well, it used to sound like Wayne Rooney but the reality is far removed from the description. Walcott has a chance to seize the lead line for country now he has demonstrated his worth for club.

The boy Walcott has gone, replaced by a successful graduate of the game ready to dominate through his adult years.

Three in, three out at Manchester City this January

Have Manchester City turned a corner? The club finally topped a group in the Champions League after a historic win over Borussia Monchengladbach and are still favourites to win a third Premier League in five seasons. They’ve largely been without star players Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany, while midfield maestros David Silva and Yaya Toure have struggled for fitness at points this term.

However, a betting man still wouldn’t back City to win the Champions League. Furthermore, all bets are off closer to home this season in one of the most unpredictable Premier League campaigns to date.

Manuel Pellegrini is perhaps likely to lift the trophy come May, but there’s a long way to go and this season is proving to be outrageously difficult to read.

The club have been trounced on the odd occasion so far. Both Liverpool and Tottenham fought tooth and nail to smash four past them apiece, suggesting Pellegrini still has many of the issues he faced last year.

Despite the arrivals of Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne to provide energy in attack, playing staff further back still look weary when faced with enthusiastic opponents. The £70m-ish spent on Eliaquim Mangala and Nicolas Otamendi has not proved to be inspired spending as of yet, either – the pair, particularly the Argentine, are clearly good defenders but seem to crumble without the stoic presence of the heroic Kompany alongside them.

The club clearly have some way to go before they can be considered major players in the Champions League, as well as being placed in the same bracket as previous title contenders. Never have they been looked upon with the same aura the famous Sir Alex Ferguson or Jose Mourinho teams were going into a season.

With that in mind, here are THREE potential arrivals and THREE possible departures to solidify City as contenders.

IN – MAURO ICARDI – (INTER MILAN)

Without the guile of Sergio Aguero, the Manchester outfit look a different side. There has been some improvement from Wilfried Bony in recent weeks, but the Ivorian is simply leagues below Aguero in terms of class.

Bearing the Argentina star’s injury record in mind, the club should make a move for some to bridge that gulf. Inter Milan star Mauro Icardi is the name on everyone’s lips at the present moment, as the bad boy 22-year old continues to frustrate at Inter Milan. He’s been given the captaincy at the San Siro after his impressive 31 goal haul last term, but dropped by Roberto Mancini in recent weeks.

He’s by no means the finished article yet, but he is a quality forward – he’s intelligent, physical and comes with a lorry-load of potential.

As an understudy to Aguero, his countryman could potentially improve by learning from the 27-year-old and create a wonderful attacking trident with Sterling and De Bruyne in the years to come.

OUT – MARTIN DEMICHELIS – (ROSARIO CENTRAL)

The Argentine has become something of a cult hero at the club after initially disappointing. When he was first afforded a run of games, the former Bayern Munich man looked slow and cumbersome. Little has changed pace-wise in the intervening time, though he has proved himself a vastly knowledgeable operator and a solid defender.

However, it’s clear the 34-year old is not a long term option. A return to his native South America looks increasingly likely for the player, whether it be next month or in the summer. Rosario Central have been linked with taking the ex-Malaga defender back home.

There will be fond memories of the defender after he turned his career around in England. While he was clearly never up to the task of taking City forward, at least he stopped those ‘donkey’ jibes. For the most part, anyway.

IN – ISCO – (REAL MADRID)

As ever with City, the big names keep coming. Real Madrid playmaker Isco has long been touted as a target at the Etihad following his work at Malaga with Pellegrini. The Spaniard, while impressing, has largely failed to command a regular starting berth in the Spanish capital with Real Madrid following his 2013 move amid their plethora of Galacticos.

Having spent big on young talents in an effort to freshen up the ranks, perhaps a move for the 23-year could finally come off. Compatriot David Silva is clearly a superstar, though he is edging ever closer to 30 and his injuries have cost the team.

The aforementioned Sterling and De Bruyne are likely to feature with or without Silva in the side though the options from there onwards become somewhat limited. Jesus Navas and Samir Nasri are good players, but again the gulf in class is so wide.

While Isco is unlikely to play second fiddle his arrival would add another big name into the attacking midfield and perhaps an heir to Silva’s crown going forward.

OUT – JESUS NAVAS – (SEVILLA)

Aside from one well taken goal during the demolition of Spurs back in November 2013, what has Jesus Navas done in Manchester? Other than run really fast.

The 30-year old is jet heeled, that much is for sure, but his end product is rarely there. He may be an effective change of pace to bring off the bench occasionally, but as the club look to march on in their quest for world domination, he is nowhere near up to scratch.

Linked with a return to Spain, the La Roja international should be sold back to Sevilla. Even if Arsenal’s reported interest in him comes to fruition, the club should consider his sale, even if strengthening a Premier League rival is rarely standard practice.

IN – ALEX SANDRO – (JUVENTUS)

Brazilian left-back Alex Sandro’s exploits against the Etihad club both home and away in the Champions League have reportedly drawn him to their attention. In light of both Aleksandar Kolarov and Gael Clichy’s struggles, they would be wise to strengthen an area that has been somewhat of an issue for a while now.

The 24-year old only joined Juventus this summer but has gone on to prove himself as one of the top full-backs in Europe. Two Man of the Match performances, a passing accuracy rate of around 85.4% and a WhoScored average rating of 7.38 has established him as a solid option.

There is not a wealth of top class full-backs in world football currently and the wage packet City could presumably offer the former Porto man could be a decider. While Juventus are clearly a huge European team with a rich history, Serie A trails behind the Premier League in more ways than one.

The irony that the Old Lady beat City home and away this year, as well as reaching the Champions League final last season, is quite prevalent I know. However, it’s not too hard to imagine that the English league is miles above its Italian counterpart in terms of attracting players.

JASON DENAYER– (GALATASARAY)

Ok, so we’re cheating a bit here. Samir Nasri would have been another choice, but the Frenchman was recently the subject of a three month layoff, pretty much ruling out any deal next month.

Belgian youngster Jason Denayer is said to have impressed Galatasaray enough while on loan in Istanbul that the Turkish titans are keen to take him on a permanent deal.

While we have talked about the need to continue the introduction of youth in the side, it may seem odd to propose selling a promising 20-year old centre-back. However, the Belgian is not much younger than Mangala, who looks a cut above.

Perhaps there could be a case argued that Denayer should be sold. With any forward planning, City could structure a deal containing a buy-back clause or first option should he leave the Turkish capital.

If he’s that good he won’t stay in Turkey that long.

Why the next few months for Newcastle are the most important in their history

The wins over Liverpool and Tottenham in recent weeks had seen an air of excitement flow through Newcastle United not seen in a long time. Maybe they weren’t so bad after all, perhaps they could actually make a good go of things and not be dragged into a relegation battle.

While the draw with Aston Villa could have been a lot worse, it did put a downer on the new found belief. For large parts of the second half, the side rock bottom of the Premier League were rampant as the Magpies nervously held on. Granted, some better finishing would no doubt have won the game for the Toon Army, but there was yet again a huge air of disappointment.

So, they aren’t out of the woods just yet. The next few months could be the most important in the North East giants’ history. Reports in recent weeks suggest the club will indeed look to strengthen in January in order to maintain their Premier League status. It’s crucial they do so. It’s crucial they get the right players.

Over the summer, owner Mike Ashley finally loosened the purse strings and afforded Steve McClaren around £50m to improve his squad. What followed were some embarrassing losses, abject capitulations and rumours of training ground bust-ups. Typical Newcastle, really.

[ffc-gal cat=”newcastle-united” no=”5″]

While there have been some top quality additions in the likes of Georgino Wijnaldum and Chancel Mbemba, the jury is still out of £13.5m striker Aleksandar Mitrovic. French winger Florian Thauvin has disappointed during his early stages on Tyneside thus far.

The feeling that the Toon had turned a corner after finally splashing the cash has since evaporated and we can start to see that former England coach McClaren has far more of a project on his hands than something that can be mended over the course of a single summer.

That’s where these next few months come in so important. Should Newcastle retain their top flight status, they can move on with their project. Now Ashley is willing to spend, helped by the lucrative TV deals now in play in the Premier League, they can build off this summer and start to shape a more competitive squad.

Already the likes of Saido Berahino, Andros Townsend and Jonjo Shelvey have been linked to the club, taking the calibre of supposed targets up another level. To turn the club round from the dark days of John Carver in just one transfer session is asking for too much, too quick.

If the current crop of players can churn out performances like those against Spurs and Liverpool, the club can look forward to a brighter future. The last few seasons have been miserable for those in the North East, but the next few months will shape the complexion of Newcastle United going forward.

Perhaps a project like the one Southampton are undertaking so successfully could be put in place, constantly remaining competitive and delighting their fans. Perhaps it will take a different path, the route is not abundantly clear. What is clear, however, is the fact it’s likely to be a lot brighter than the dismal last few years.

Building a competitive squad full of exciting players is so nearly in sight, though the threat of relegation looms. With the club so finely balanced between conquering or capitulating, it’s hard to truly rule out the prospect of a second relegation under Ashley’s control.

While it’s clearly stating the obvious in saying dropping down into the Championship would be a disaster for any team with the broadcasting deals soon coming into play, but for Newcastle specifically, it could start an alarming side.

Some of the teams in the relegation scrap could survive with going down and coming back up again. Any of the promoted sides, though that currently looks unlikely, or the likes of Sunderland under the stewardship of Sam Allardyce could feasibly deal with the ordeal.

The Magpies, however, are likely to crumble in the face of such adversity and could tumble down the league structure. Though they made a pretty rapid return to the Promised Land after their last dropout, things are universally different now.

Back then, players like Joey Barton, Kevin Nolan and Andy Carroll formed a strong backbone of players who understood just what it takes to get a club like the Toon back into the Premier League. Should they be condemned to a similar fate, they do not possess such riches.

The best players; Wijnaldum, Perez, Sissoko, would all leave and the squad does not boast a wealth of academy prospects to promote in such an extreme case. It would be an unmitigated disaster. Think Portsmouth, or Leeds.

Entrusting such an unpredictable group of players with perhaps the most important few months with the future of Newcastle United is a huge gamble. However, it’s one they’ve chosen to take themselves.

Man City vs. Leicester – A combined XI

Who would have predicted before a ball was kicked that Manchester City vs. Leicester in FEBRUARY would have been a game with genuine title connotations? Very few, we’ll wager. However, this is the situation we’re in, with the crazy 2015/16 season having thrown the Foxes into the midst of a battle for the very biggest prize. Claudio Ranieri’s men maintained their three-point advantage at the summit of the table with a stunning 2-0 win over Liverpool on Tuesday, but with goal difference coming into play, the Citizens could leapfrog them with a win at home.Simply put, Saturday’s early kick-off is the most important match of the weekend. With that in mind, we’ve been pondering a combined XI in FootballFanCast towers, but with a twist…We put some big questions to the fans on Twitter to assess the situation, and here are the results.GK – Joe HartDF – Bacary SagnaDF – Nicolas OtamendiDF – Wes MorganDF – Christian FuchsMF – N’Golo KanteMF – Danny DrinkwaterMF – FernandoMF – Raheem SterlingMF – Riyad MahrezST – Sergio AgueroIn reality, you may op for a 4-4-2 with Aguero and Vardy up front, but to make it interesting we elected to pick between the two, as we did with Silva and Mahrez and Fernandinho and N’Golo Kante.

[ad_pod id=’football-survey’ align=’center’]

[ad_pod id=’ricco’ align=’center’]

They can win the thing – so what’s the story of Leicester City’s success?

They started the season at 5000/1 outsiders. That was enough for most people to completely ignore them as they begun their betting at the start of the season, predictably choosing either Manchester City or Chelsea as their title favourites for the coming campaign.

But Leicester City are now 7/4 title favourites with some bookies and this doesn’t really begin to show their meteoric rise in enough light. It really is an amazing story and one that has completely overshadowed Jose Mourinho’s departure, Pep Guardiola’s appointment and Louis van Gaal’s capitulation.

Last week they swept Manchester City aside at the Etihad Stadium and walked away 3-1 winners. The ease at which they won quickly proved why they are flying at the summit of the Premier League and this was the result that proved too much for the bookies to take, with many of them now making the Foxes favourite for the crown.

Leicester have no European or domestic cup issues to contend with as they continue their fight for the title. They have only 13 games left with the hardest of their games behind them. They have one midweek game against West Brom on March 1, but apart from that, their schedule consists of entirely weekend-to-weekend matches.

Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez, N’Golo Kante and Danny Drinkwater have all been brilliant this season and everyone knows it. They’ve been superb and Leicester’s best piece of business in this transfer window was keeping hold of all four, amid strong European interest.

But why would they leave? This is their best chance to win a Premier League winners’ medal and credit needs to be given to all of the Leicester squad for sticking with the team and in their current philosophy.

The reason Leicester can definitely win the league now is because they believe they can. They are confident, happy and full of team-spirit and you only have to watch their direct passing to see why they are getting success.

Their forward line reminds me of Liverpool’s so-close-yet-so-far season in 2014-2015. Liverpool’s success was built upon a solid defence and midfield and simply leaving the rest to Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling. The lightning style of football relies on players knowing each others’ games and letting each other get on with their jobs.

The Leicester squad know their strengths. They know Vardy will score goal after goal, Mahrez will provide assists for days, Drinkwater will spray the ball around, Okazaki will work hard and Kante will break up the play, and that is what will bring them success.

Look at the rest of their fixtures- there are three games against strugglers Norwich, Newcastle and Sunderland and seven games against mid-table sides. Games against Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea (on the last day of the season) will make the difference.

And whilst City, Arsenal and Tottenham are trekking across Europe in pursuit of European glory, Leicester have time to regroup and recover. They have a smaller squad but that doesn’t matter- it hasn’t been a factor so far.

They’ve beaten Liverpool and Manchester City in recent weeks. If they beat Arsenal this weekend, there is no reason why the Foxes can’t go on and win the whole thing.

Dare to dream Foxes’ fans.
