ScorecardLiam Trevaskis a part-time left-arm spinner from Carlisle, took three wickets in a brilliant last over as Durham once again proved their ability to scramble wins from unpromising situations as they snatched a startling victory against Lancashire at Emirates Old Trafford.Trevaskis, 19, who had taken only one wicket in seven previous T20 appearances, defended just six off the last over and finished with a career-best four for 16 as Lancashire chased a 155 target, slipping badly from a position of strength at halfway. He conceded only one in the last over as he had James Faulkner caught at long-on, Lamb stumped and Matthew Parkinson caught at deep midwicket. The Lightning needed 63 off the last 10 overs with six wickets left and finished on 150 for nine.It was another blow for Faulkner, Lancashire’s Australian allrounder, who is attempting to rebuild his reputation after his career was blighted by injury.Trevaskis made his T20 debut last season, dismissing England’s Alex Hales in the match against Nottinghamshire at Chester-le-Street and also played for England’s Under-19 side in the One-Day series with India.Talking T20 Podcast: About time Rikki Clarke replaced Stokes?

Durham’s four-run win significantly strengthens their hopes of quarter-final qualification. The second-placed Jets have moved to 14 points from 10 games, one behind leaders Worcestershire. Lancashire are fourth on eleven points from 10. Durham, assumed to be also-rans, are proving more resilient then many deemed possible.”I’m still a little bit lost for words on how we actually came out victorious,” said Durham captain Tom Latham. “James Weighell was going to bowl the last over, but it looked easier with pace on the ball and Liam had bowled a good couple of overs beforehand. He hasn’t played a huge amount of T20 cricket, and his main role is as a batter.”Earlier, Lancashire’s Afghanistan spinner Zahir Khan impressed with 2 for 19 on his debut on an Old Trafford pitch again prepared with slow bowlers in mind.Durham posted 154 for 7, a total which looked under par when Alex Davies flew out of the blocks in reply with 53 off 33 balls.Zahir, also 19, has signed for the rest of the season on Jos Buttler’s recommendation having been squad mates at Rajasthan Royals in the IPL earlier this summer. He bowled considerably more googlies than chinamen in a mid-innings spell that seemed to have made Lancashire strong favourites.Trevaskis was bowled around his legs as he tried to sweep and veteran Paul Collingwood fell lbw sweeping in an eye-catching four-over spell.Durham started positively with the bat, reaching 56 for 1 in the seventh over. But they stumbled through the middle in the face of Khan and Lamb, whose sister Emma also struck twice in a Kia Super League game earlier in the day.In the end, the Jets did well to get up to 154 as veteran Will Smith hit three sixes in 37 not out. Their innings included nine sixes and only six fours.Danny Lamb had James Weighell caught at deep cover off a full toss and Stuart Poynter caught at mid-off in only his second Blast appearance of the summer and third in all. Earlier, Jordan Clark caught younger brother Graham at long-on for 29 off leg-spinner Matthew Parkinson.Chris Rushworth had Karl Brown caught at mid-on in the first over of the Lightning chase, but Davies quickly found his range on the way to a club record equalling fifth Blast fifty of the season.Davies found useful support from pinch-hitter Arron Lilley (28). They shared 72 inside eight overs for the second wicket before Lilley was run out to leave the score at 78 for two in the eighth.Davies reached his fifty off 32 balls in the 10th over, but he was caught behind off Ben Whitehead’s leg-spinners with his next ball – 88 for three.Steven Croft miscued a return catch to Trevaskis as Lancashire’s target became 41 off the last six overs. Whitehead struck again to remove Dane Vilas as the game tightened up significantly to 19 off two overs. Jordan Clark fell to Nathan Rimmington in the penultimate before Trevaskis had the final say.Lancashire face Yorkshire at Emerald Headingley on Thursday evening, while Durham host Leicestershire on Wednesday in a busy week that could decide their season.

Poch must ditch Chelsea’s £80k-p/w dud who was worse than Colwill vs Spurs

Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur played out one of the craziest Premier League games of recent on Monday night as the Blues ran out as 4-1 winners, but that's only a snippet of the chaotic drama that unfolded.

There were ten yellow cards, two red cards and nine VAR checks across a pulsating 111 minutes of football as Spurs continued to play a high line with nine men and Mauricio Pochettino's side struggled to break them down.

Once Nicolas Jackson eventually broke through their depleted back line in the 75th minute, however, the floodgates opened and the Senegalese helped himself to a hat-trick.

Whilst the scoreline suggests the visitors were comfortable, they were anything but and if Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie hadn't been so recklessly sent off, the outcome of the contest could have been a lot different.

Jackson turned out to be the hero on the night, but there were a few notable villains in Blue.

Levi Colwill's performance against Tottenham

Pochettino chose to start Levi Colwill ahead of Marc Cucurella at left back in an attempt to deal with the dangerous Dejan Kulusevski.

Colwill was making his fifth appearance of the campaign in that position and he would endure a night to forget.

He played the role of a villain in Kulusevski's opener, affording the Swede too much space on the right channel, before allowing him to cut in on his left and hit a strike that deflected off his back and beyond the despairing Robert Sanchez.

That moment would foreshadow how the rest of his night would plan out as he was nearly sent off on the stroke of half-time following a heated exchange with Pape Matar Sarr.

The 20-year-old, who was given a yellow card for the clash, was then substituted at the break with Cucurella playing the second half at left-back.

Colwill let the occasion of a heated London derby get to him and when asked about his decision to substitute him at half-time, Pochettino said after the game:

"Yes, because I think after the yellow card he lose a little bit his focus and it is too much risk."

The former Brighton & Hove Albion loan star wasn't the only player who let the occasion get to him on the night, however, as Axel Disasi didn't have his best game in Blue.

Axel Disasi's statistics vs Tottenham

In the absence of Benoit Badiashile, who has now returned from a hamstring injury, Disasi has started in all but one Premier League fixture for Chelsea since arriving from Monaco in the summer.

He got the nod over his French compatriot against Spurs, however, on the evidence of his performance on Monday night, he could be at risk of being dropped for Badiashile or Pochettino could shuffle Colwill next to Thiago Silva and put Cucurella at left-back.

Once labelled as a "disaster" by talkSPORT pundit Andy Jacobs following his performance in the 3-1 defeat against West Ham United, Disasi didn't paint himself in a positive light once more against Spurs.

Awarded the lowest Sofascore rating (6.5) out of all the Chelsea starters, the £80k-per-week dud didn't look comfortable on the ball, costing his team in possession by losing it ten times and misplacing three of his six attempted long balls.

His rawness and lack of positional sense from a defensive standpoint were taken advantage of by Tottenham in the early stages and would have been exploited further if they weren't reduced to nine men.

The 25-year-old, who only made one tackle in a pulsating contest, has previously been criticised by William Gallas for not being at the required level in the Premier League.

The former Chelsea star said: "He has to improve a lot".

Following his display against Tottenham, Gallas was correct to make that statement, and he could face the axe from Pochettino's starting eleven if he doesn't step it up moving forward.

Alastair Cook is understood to be considering an offer to try his hand at commentary early next year.ESPNcricinfo understands that Cook, who is retiring from Test cricket at the end of the current match against India at The Oval, is in talks with TalkSport to join their commentary team for England’s tour of the Caribbean at the start of 2019.TalkSport gave notice of their ambition earlier this year by winning the audio rights for England’s series in Sri Lanka and the Caribbean over the season of 2018-19.Mark Nicholas, Darren Gough, David Lloyd and Jarrod Kimber are understood to be part of the commentary team at various stages of winter. It is also believed TalkSport are likely to be awarded the rights for England’s tour of South Africa in 2019-20, with the BBC retaining the rights to the tour of New Zealand that precedes it. The BBC has also won a long-term deal to broadcast the Ashes – men’s and women’s – and ICC events. No final decision has yet been made on Cook’s involvement but the early interest does suggest he will not struggle for opportunities in his post-playing career.

Tallawahs continue hot start with 47-run win over Patriots

Major contributions from almost every player in the team helped Jamaica Tallawahs complete a comprehensive win before their three-game Florida leg

The Report by Peter Della Penna16-Aug-2018Ross Taylor swats the ball away•Getty Images

Arguably the most well-rounded team performance of the season for Jamaica Tallawahs helped them maintain their perfect start to CPL 2018 as they ended their two-game home stretch at Sabina Park with a 47-run win over St Kitts & Nevis Patriots, spoiling a return for native son Chris Gayle.Three batsmen – Glenn Phillips, Kennar Lewis and Ross Taylor – contributed 40-plus scores to set a stiff target of 179 after the Tallawahs lost the toss. In response, the Patriots crawled out of the gate at 2 for 1 in three overs and were three down by the end of the Powerplay. They never recovered as six different Tallawahs bowlers took wickets to keep them to 131 for 9.Patriots pay for fielding errorsTwo of the three high scorers on the night for the Tallawahs received reprieves early in their innings. The first came to Phillips on 11 in the sixth over. Substitute fielder Hayden Walsh Jr., who was on after Gayle exited in the fourth over with a thumb injury, charged in from deep square leg after Phillips miscued a pull off Carlos Brathwaite. But Walsh was distracted by Jeremiah Louis running toward him from midwicket and, despite getting two hands to the ball, couldn’t hold on. Phillips went on to make 41 off 38 balls. The second came to Taylor, who skied a chance which was snapped up easily at extra cover when he was on 6, off the bowling of Anton Devcich in the 10th over. However, the third umpire called Taylor back to the crease after replays showed Devcich had overstepped the line. The free hit was swatted for six by Phillips, who up to that stage had scored a sluggish 15 off 21 balls before finishing with 26 off his last 17.The two sides of LamichhaneIn an innings where Tallawahs scored at a run rate of 8.9 per over, the lone bowler who kept Patriots in the match during the first half was the 18-year-old legspinner from Nepal, whose end economy was 5.25. It didn’t start that way though.Lamichhane’s first seven balls were hit for 16 runs, including two sixes by Man of the Match Kennar. But after the first ball of the 7th over was hit straight for six, Lamichhane dragged his next ball to a sixth stump line outside off and Kennar struggled to reach out with the result a skied catch to Tom Cooper on the boundary at long-off.Two balls later, Lamichhane trapped Andre McCarthy with a googly. Off his final 17 deliveries, he conceded just five runs. Taylor struggled most of all, beaten repeatedly outside off stump to go scoreless in four deliveries against Lamichhane. At the end of his four-over spell, Tallawahs were 113 for 3 and Taylor on 11 off 20 balls.Cottrell gets shelledThe momentum shifted drastically once Lamichhane left the attack as Tallawahs plundered 65 off the last five overs. Taylor in particular played with a newfound freedom once Sheldon Cottrell entered in the 16th over. In the first four balls after Lamichhane’s spell ended, Taylor went 6, 6, leg bye and 6. Taylor scored 40 off his final 15 balls, including 28 off 8 against Cottrell during the 16th and 19th overs that featured two fours and three sixes by the New Zealand batsman. Cottrell ended with 0 for 44 on the night as Taylor provided a big lift heading into the innings break. In Lew of runsEvin Lewis’ dramatic form drought continued at Sabina Park on Wednesday night. After Gayle played all 12 balls over the first two overs and managed to come away with just one run, Lewis buckled under the mounting pressure when he finally got on strike, fending at back of a length ball angled across by Oshane Thomas for a second-ball duck. It’s his second straight duck and he has scored just 1 run off 10 balls this season.Cooper’s struggles continued as well after coming in at No. 3. Krishmar Santokie, who bowled a maiden to Gayle in the second over, snared Cooper thanks to a caped crusading effort by captain Andre Russell flying through the air at mid-off for a spectacular catch in the fourth over to make it 9 for 2.Gayle, who had been dropped on 1 at backward point by Kennar off Thomas, started to stir in the fifth with a pair of sixes off Thomas but offspinner Steven Jacobs struck in his first over of the season, getting Gayle to slash to short third man to end the sixth over. Ending the Powerplay at 39 for 3, spinners continued to tie down the Patriots. Adam Zampa and Imad Wasim each collected a pair of wickets. When Imad had Brathwaite skying to long-on to make it 93 for 8, Patriots were in the process of being blown out, before Cottrell made cosmetic adjustments to the final scoreline with some late hitting. But the result was never in doubt for the Tallawahs.

Man Utd could replace Ten Hag with swoop for "special" 38 y/o boss

Not since the 1962/63 season under the legendary Matt Busby have Manchester United endured a worse start to a campaign, losing eight of their opening 15 matches across all competitions.

Back-to-back 3-0 defeats at Old Trafford has piled the pressure on manager Erik ten Hag and despite a decent first season in charge, all that progress has been wiped out after their woeful beginning to 2023/24.

Having secured United’s first trophy for six years by winning the EFL Cup last term, along with qualifying for the Champions League, some may have felt that the Dutchman was the true heir apparent to Sir Alex Ferguson, and it was a matter of when, not if, the Old Trafford side could finally return to the summit of English football.

Things started to unravel during the summer transfer window, as the ex-Ajax tactician's business that was conducted was not exactly what was required to take United to the next level, on the current evidence.

Andre Onana arrived from Inter Milan and took over from David de Gea, who left after his contract expired over the summer, while Mason Mount cost the club around £60m from Chelsea, yet he had just a year left on his contract at the Blues.

Combine these poor transfers with the performances on the pitch and it is evident the former Ajax boss is in a sticky situation, one that will need remedying as soon as possible.

He is now feeling the heat and only a win against Fulham on Saturday will be enough to ensure he has some respite in the coming days, yet this might not stop the rumour mill with regard to who could potentially replace him.

One name that has emerged as a potential successor to Ten Hag is current Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim.

Man Utd manager news – Ruben Amorim

According to the Times, the Red Devils have looked at candidates who could take over from Ten Hag should this dire run of form continue, and two names have emerged – Amorim and former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane.

Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim.

The Portuguese manager has done a stellar job at Sporting over the previous few seasons, and he recently dropped a hint regarding his future following their recent win over Farense.

He said: "This year, I'm not going to go back to the same conversation as last year. I'm not going to make any kind of comment on these situations.

"Regarding the future, I have an idea for the end of the season, but I won't say it now. But the results and the context take us to something different.

"I don't want to be commenting on these things. I have not been contacted by Manchester United."

These coy comments do give much away and it remains to be seen whether or not the Red Devils will make an official approach for his services.

Ruben Amorim’s managerial record

As a player, Amorim spent the vast majority of his career starring for Benfica, going on to make over 150 appearances for the club while winning three league titles along with a handful of domestic cups.

The former midfielder also earned 14 caps for his country and represented Portugal at two World Cups and this experience could only benefit him if he decided to make the move into management when he retired.

Indeed, he became manager of Casa Pia in 2018, yet took charge of just four games before moving on to SC Braga towards the end of 2019 across only 13 matches, he secured a points per game average of 2.38 while also defeating Porto in the League Cup final, winning a trophy in only his fifth game in charge of the club.

He defeated Sporting in the semifinals of the competition, and they were clearly impressed, going on to hire him during the 2019/20 campaign.

The club had not won a top-flight title since the 2001/02 season and given Benfica and Porto had dominated since then, it was not looking like they would break through this recent duopoly.

Under Amorim however, they made history. Sporting lost just one league match all term throughout 2020/21, and it came during their penultimate match with the title already secured. They ended up five points clear of Porto while also claiming the League Cup, and it returned the club to the summit after a nearly two-decade wait.

Ruben Amorim’s style of play

The 38-year-old has been hailed as a “special manager” in the past by journalist Zach Lowy, while he was lauded as “the most exciting young manager in Europe” by journalist Jack Pitt-Brooke before Sporting clashed with Manchester City in the Champions League last year, indicating how well revered he is already.

Indeed, Amorim led Sporting to victories over Tottenham Hotspur in Europe’s premier club competition last season while sending Arsenal packing from the Europa League at the last 16 stage, and it is clear that his presence may be feared should he move to England.

He prefers to use a 3-4-3 formation and with his teams scoring 386 goals across 190 matches, working out as just over two goals per game, he has a clear penchant for attacking football and this could endear him to the United faithful.

With players such as Antony, Marcus Rashford, and Rasmus Hojlund, Amorim would be blessed with some wonderful attacking players should he end up in Manchester and his style could bring out the best in them.

Under Ten Hag this season, the Red Devils have been mediocre at best and if this continues up until the festive season, change may be required at Old Trafford.

There are deeper problems at United, without a shadow of a doubt, but the current manager is failing to get a tune out of this squad of overpaid players, and they may not even qualify for Europe if they continue at their current rate.

Amorim has shown his capabilities both domestically and on the European stage with Sporting since taking over nearly four years ago and now is the perfect time to spread his wings and embrace a new challenge.

Therefore, the genius tactician could be a dream replacement for Ten Hag if the Red Devils do decide that they want to go in a new direction and part ways with the Dutchman over the coming weeks or months.

Perhaps the biggest of challenges – returning United to the top of the Premier League.
