Keaton Jennings provides reminder of quality for new club Lancashire

The former England opener expended plenty of sweat in making an unbeaten 91 as Lancashire replied confidently to Somerset’s first-innings 429

Scorecard”You will enjoy the fruit of your labour,” reads one translation of Psalm 128, and perhaps it will be so with Keaton Jennings. Most certainly the Lancashire opener expended plenty of sweat in making the 91 unbeaten runs he accumulated in 269 minutes this Saturday afternoon. They took him to his first half-century in 23 innings, since he made fifties for England Lions last June, and they have altered the balance of this game.Jennings’s work-colleague for the last half of this day’s play was Dane Vilas and the two alumni of King Edward VII School, Johannesburg had put on an unbroken 167 runs for the third wicket at the close. The stand may have encouraged Lancashire supporters to think their side might now bat very long and embarrass Somerset on a turning wicket come Monday. Such thoughts gained encouragement from Vilas’ increasing fluency whereas Jennings’ composure and appetite for toil will not be unnoticed by the selectors. But an international recall is more than the opener can wish for on the strength of this innings. All the same he did display the application Test cricketers need in facing down a strong Somerset attack, which featured both the pace of Craig Overton and the probing accuracy of Jack Leach’s left-arm spin. Most of Jennings’ 14 boundaries were orthodox in execution and played to deliveries which invited punishment; only his two reverse sweeps off Leach hinted at unlicensed freedom. And Jennings certainly did more for his England chances than two of his Lions colleagues, both of whom departed in early afternoon when playing undistinguished shots. The first was Alex Davies, who batted fluently for 23 before playing a flat-footed cut at Tim Groenewald and edging a catch to Steve Davies. Then Liam Livingstone made only 6 before he tried to work Leach to leg but only contrived to skew the ball off the edge to Lewis Gregory at slip. That wicket brought Vilas to the wicket and he offered Jennings congenial company until the close. Neither the warm weather nor the sight of three well-fleshed spectators wearing speedos could disturb them. Those garments may have been stretched almost beyond endurance but Lancashire’s third-wicket pair were made of even sterner material.Indeed Vilas was as disciplined as Jennings. For a long time his only boundaries were the straight sixes he thumped off consecutive balls from Leach. Then he retired to his shell and hit only two more fours before bringing up his fifty with a pull off Paul van Meekeren. He had hit four more boundaries by the close of a day, which had gone better than the home side could have hoped when Somerset were 415 for 6.But having bowled for much of the morning as if waiting patiently for wickets to fall, Lancashire’s termination of the Somerset innings was remarkably clinical. The last four of wickets fell for 14 runs in 22 balls, three of them to legspinner Matt Parkinson, who began the tumble when he persuaded Craig Overton into an ugly hoick to the talcum-coiffed James Anderson at short midwicket. The finest dismissal, however, was the work of Joe Mennie and it accounted for Tom Abell when the Somerset skipper was one short of his hundred. Mennie’s bowling was tailored to the moment; he kept a tight off stump line to Abell, denying a single like a diner withholding a tip. Then he arrowed one back from outside off, prompting a rapid leg before decision from Nick Cook. Abell had been on 99 for nine balls. It was as fine a piece of cricket as we saw all day and certainly pleasanter on the eye than the afternoon’s budgie-concealment prompted by Old Trafford’s pale impersonation of summer. “Now the works of the flesh are evident,” we are reminded in the fifth chapter of Galatians. Too true, alas, too true.

Everton: Toffees failed to sign Pienaar upgrade who became a £150m-rated "legend"

Everton are a club in crisis at the moment, with the fans having very little to feed off, and in turn the team seldom receiving the backing, especially at home, to spur them on to victory.

Whilst many will argue it is a two-way street, and that the players must give the Goodison Park crowd something to cheer about, there are few players really capable of achieving such a feat, whether that be due to a lack of technical quality or just a lack of ingenuity.

In the end, all Evertonians crave is some hard work, with a high press and a few tough tackles often enough to cultivate a fine atmosphere.

David Moyes was one of few managers who truly understood this, and as such built his teams around such an image. The Toffees under the Scotsman were solid and hard to beat, built from a deprived financial backing and turned into an outfit that embodied the club's image.

He would employ midfielders with enough combative steel to overraw opposition, but with a touch of class that could see them sweep them aside too. Wingers would seek to do the same, supplying hulking frontmen who would batter home goalscoring opportunities.

Few exemplify the quintessential hard-working Moyes wideman more than Steven Pienaar, who achieved cult-hero status on Merseyside across two successful spells.

How good was Steven Pienaar?

Having joined from Borussia Dortmund back in 2007, initially on loan but with a pre-agreed permanent fee of just $4m (£3.4m), it took little time for the diminutive trickster to acclimatise to life in a new country.

After all, his tenure in Germany had been tough, with the South African never really feeling accepted at his previous club.

Whilst that would swiftly change under the former Preston North End manager, the 41-year-old was hardly famed for the phenomenal figures he would post throughout each season. Especially given his debut year would see him record just eight Premier League goal contributions, following that up with a further ten the following year.

Instead, what he offered was a near-telepathic connection with his full-back, as he and Leighton Baines struck up a legendary partnership that Moyes would outline: "In the end, this partnership between Steven Pienaar and Leighton Baines will be very hard to improve on. Their ability to find each other with the ball, they wanted to play and combine together, their combination play down the left was exceptional.

"We found that we always wanted Pienaar to lock on and encourage the full back to follow him in. If the full back chose not to come, we were happy for the combination between Baines and Pienaar to get on the ball. Quite often we sucked a full back out, and as I said earlier these two had an incredible ability to get the ball back to each other."

Their presence typified an era that, whilst unsurprisingly devoid of silverware, actually had the fans excited to come to Goodison Park knowing full well that their support would be justified by the relentless performances on the pitch.

To justify just how highly these supporters value hard work, Pienaar even won the 2010 Player of the Year award following a campaign in which he had scored just four league goals.

However, despite how revered the left midfielder remains, he does not even come close to another star who the current West Ham United boss reportedly came close to signing back in the day.

Admittedly, there are few wingers who can compare with a prime Eden Hazard.

Did Everton nearly sign Eden Hazard?

Back in 2012, Moyes would detail exactly how they missed out on the Belgian wizard, who rocketed to stardom after his summer move to Chelsea for a mouth-watering £32m fee.

The 60-year-old simply noted: "We knew all about Hazard because of Marouane Fellaini and the Belgium boys. But it was always going to be biggish cash for us – and we’ve had a few like that, I can tell you!"

eden-hazard

For comparison, during the summer in which the current free agent signed, the Toffees would only spend a total of €21.65m (£18.7m), bringing in the likes of John Stones, Kevin Mirallas and Pienaar, who had returned after a failed move to Tottenham Hotspur.

It is fair to say that Hazard would eclipse the latter two with ease.

How good was Eden Hazard?

To emphasise just how much better the former Real Madrid superstar was than Everton's South African ace, his final year in England saw him post 21 goals and assist a further 17 across all competitions.

Meanwhile, Pienaar would only score 22 and assist 40 across his entire career in the Premier League, spanning eight and a half years.

This should come as no surprise though, with Hazard naturally bound to have reached the elite levels given the £150m paid to tempt his Stamford Bridge exit. He had reached the pinnacle of world football, and a step up to the biggest club in the game made natural sense after he had nearly won it all with the Blues.

After all, early on in his time there, writer George Sessions had already suggested the future was bright, noting: "Eden Hazard is a bit special. He started this season quite slowly but is turning into a world beater for Chelsea. Huge potential."

Chelsea fan Frank Khalid then sought to remind the masses of a talent that was lost to injuries upon that fateful transfer to Madrid: "Just a reminder to everyone what Eden Hazard could do, I’m really fed up with the constant negative things said about Eden Hazard. He will always be a Chelsea legend".

The 126-cap maestro departed west London having scored 110 goals, assisting a further 92 across 352 appearances in England, and will likely go down as one of the most exciting stars the Premier League has ever seen. Few in history can compete with that, let alone the workmanlike, technically inferior Pienaar.

Whether he would have thrived in Moyes' work ethic-dependant system remains to be seen, but with talents like the 32-year-old, it is always worth making allowances. After all, his managers at Chelsea always did, and they would perennially reap the rewards of his efforts.

Had he moved to Merseyside instead of the English capital, perhaps it could have been them whom he propelled towards the apex of English football, with his ability certainly impressive enough to have done so.

Leeds: Farke could unearth a "front-foot" 19 y/o Liam Cooper heir

Leeds United are a club that have a rich history of youth production, having pumped out a steady stream of stars across numerous years now, many of which are still in circulation at the top of the game even today.

The likes of Kalvin Phillips just won a treble last season with Manchester City alongside Scott Carson, with Aaron Lennon, Danny Rose, Fabian Delph and many more all enjoying fine careers too away from Elland Road.

However, perhaps most exciting is the crop of academy graduates currently residing in Yorkshire, with Daniel Farke having already proven his willingness to throw them into action regardless of their age.

As such, the spine of his squad boasts youth around every corner, with Illan Meslier, Pascal Struijk, Ethan Ampadu and Georginio Rutter giving way to the likes of Archie Gray, Joe Gelhardt, Wilfried Gnonto and Crysencio Summerville.

It is astounding just how reliant the Whites have become on their youth, with it marking an impressive fall-back option following their relegation from the Premier League last term. Given they sit fifth after 11 games too, there is every reason to believe that such a youth-focused outfit could mount a genuine push for promotion too.

However, whether they achieve that or not, there are some key positions that will need filling come the conclusion of this campaign.

Joe Rodon may be impressing for now, but he cannot fill Liam Cooper's boots forever, given he is set to return to his parent club Tottenham Hotspur. So, perhaps the former Norwich City boss could look to his academy once again, seeking to promote the next promising centre-back and mould him in his image.

How good was Liam Cooper?

Although injuries have riddled the Scotsman in recent years, few around Yorkshire have forgotten just how impressive the man mountain was in engineering their 2020 promotion, and the exceptional first year back in the top flight that followed.

However, in the same vein, they are also aware that things must move on, and a long-term replacement has become a matter of high priority given the lack of depth in those areas.

Whoever is drafted in must be powerful and domineering, boasting enough leadership qualities to at least offset what they would lose should their club captain move on. And yet, they also need to be able to actually play the game, feeding into their philosophy that allows them to maintain the bulk of possession without panicking on the ball.

liam-cooper-leeds-united-newcastle-alexander-isak-team-news-allardyce

This was no better exemplified than through Cooper's 2019/20 term, as he featured 38 times in the Championship, starring at the back. Whilst his 82% pass accuracy was hardly outstanding, it did mark a fine foundation for what was to come upon stepping up into the Premier League. Meanwhile, his 1.8 interceptions, 1.4 tackles and three clearances per game helped his side win 15 clean sheets when he featured, marking a phenomenal return for a side that would walk to the title, via Sofascore.

In fact, Marcelo Bielsa would even seek to laud the 17-cap colossus back in 2019 as he stepped up his return from injury: "He played an hour. He is in good conditions to come back to the team. He has a very good first pass, he is good in the aerial balls, he is our captain and he deserves to be our captain. When he’s inside the team he always makes the team stronger."

It was going to take something special to find someone to live up to these expectations, yet in Rodon they managed to secure the perfect heir, at least for the year.

How is Joe Rodon playing?

Having moved to Spurs from Swansea City, his knowledge of the Championship was already vast before he earned further experience in the Premier League and later Ligue 1.

It seems that this has culminated in producing one of the division's outstanding stoppers, shining as a true defensive warrior with plenty of class to remain a useful asset in the modern game.

As such, when compared to other centre-backs in the next 14 competitions most similar to the Championship, Rodon sits in the top 14% for pass accuracy, the top 10% for interceptions per 90, and the top 1% for aerials won per 90, via FBref.

His influence has been revolutionary, with Farke seeking to laud the impact of the Wales international: "We got the feeling he was prepared and we don’t have to speak about his quality, he knows this league inside out, he was rock solid when he played in this league and that was the reason Tottenham spent so much money on him.

"He has unbelievable pace and it is good when we have to defend that high in the field, it helps. He brings also aerial threat into our game, we have many smaller, not the tallest players, (it’s) also important for us in terms of set-pieces he is strong in duals and build up passes in his technique.

Leeds defender Joe Rodon.

"Also, to find a pass, there is still a few things he can improve. I think in one or two scenes, he took a bit too much risk in terms of stepping in."

So, come May when Leeds will know their future more clearly, not only will they need a Cooper heir, but a Rodon one too. Fortunately, in Jeremiah Chilokoa-Mullen, the Whites may already have one readymade in the academy.

Who is Jeremiah Chilokoa-Mullen?

Although the 19-year-old is yet to make a senior appearance, his performances for the U21s will have certainly caught the eye.

After all, the Scotsman was ever-present for the side that achieved promotion to the Premier League 2 Division 1, having impressed throughout the campaign before missing out on automatic promotion on the final day of the season.

They were not to be denied, and Chilokoa-Mullen finished having made 15 appearances, scoring once and starring at the heart of a resolute defence.

Whilst their shared nationality helps to earn comparisons to Cooper, his own rendition of his play style offers further similarities, as he noted after penning his first professional contract: "I'm a player who reads the game quite well and I like to defend on the front foot, I want to keep learning under the coaching staff and become a better player in general.”

His ability to read the game and snuff out attacks is one that both the former Hull City stalwart and Rodon share, with his qualities sure to have only grown since that 2021 interview.

Having now earned vital experience in earning promotion too, he is surely ready for the step up into senior football, with the 6 foot 2 titan sure to be raring to go at the end of this campaign.

Jason Roy keeps eyes on the bigger prize as England take "stepping stones" towards the World Cup

England opener says he is in ‘best headspace’ of his international career

Jason Roy believes he is in the “best headspace” of his international career, after helping to propel England to the brink of a 5-0 whitewash against Australia with a haul of two centuries and a fifty in a record-laden run of performances. However Roy insists that the form and confidence currently coursing through England’s white-ball squad is merely a “stepping stone to the bigger picture”, with the World Cup on home soil looming this time next year.”It’s great breaking all the records and stuff but at the end of the day, the aim is to have this confidence come the World Cup so we can get some good wins under our belts,” he said. “The records are fantastic, obviously, and it’s a nice reward for the hard work we have put in.”Chief among those records, of course, was England’s 481 for 6 in the third ODI at Trent Bridge, the highest score ever made in a limited-overs international. And though Roy’s 82 from 61 balls was integral to an opening stand of 159 inside the first 20 overs of that innings, the mainstays of England’s performance that day were his top three colleagues, Jonny Bairstow and Alex Hales. Both made centuries to crank up the competition for places in the most stacked batting line-up in the game.”I guess so,” said Roy, when asked if the selection battle was driving the players to new heights. “You obviously want everyone to do well, each individual in the team. There’s no animosity outside the changing room, nothing’s changed. We are all very good friends, it’s just a case of wanting the best out of your mate. It’s pretty simple.””Jonny strikes the ball incredibly cleanly, especially at this moment in time, and he just seems to be in an amazing purple patch which is great for him and the team.”We’re getting off to such good starts and when you’re chasing totals like 310 it makes it easier for the guys coming in. We kind of spur each other on and say ‘good shot’ and things like that. Random stuff.”We know our games pretty well and we know each other’s games pretty well. If he doesn’t want to take risks against one bowler I might want to take risks against them. We’re working well together as a pair to be honest.”The upshot of Roy’s current form, and Bairstow’s continued excellence, is that Hales remains the most vulnerable of the top three when Ben Stokes returns from injury next month.”It’s a tough call for the management. Nothing to do with me,” said Roy. “Me and Halesy had great chemistry, likewise Jonny and Halesy and myself and Jonny and so forth. The nature of the way we play is beneficial to the team.”Roy dismissed the notion that he had anything still to learn from his dramatic loss of form during last year’s Champions Trophy, when he was dropped in favour of Bairstow for England’s defeat in the semi-finals against the eventual winners, Pakistan.”A year ago. We’re talking about a year ago now,” he said. “It is a relatively simple game, you work hard, you train hard and you get some good results and I’m happy that the results have come my way now.”As a kid I did look up to the Champions Trophy and wanted to play well, but I got dropped and that was heartbreaking for me, so going away and putting in the hard work, I know I’m going to get my rewards.”Let’s hope this time next year I’m at the World Cup and I’m in decent form and can win some games for the team.”At the end of the day I want to be a part of the team in the World Cup. If I’m not I’m not that’s the way it is, it is for the benefit of the team.”

Move over Rice: Arsenal have a new star in Arteta’s "perfect" £90k-p/w talent

Arsenal maintained their unbeaten start to the Premier League campaign with a 2-2 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

“They have had two bids rejected but their [Arsenal's] interest remains strong. There is optimism at the Emirates Stadium that with patience they will get this done given that the player has very clearly indicated that he would like to join them.”

These are the words of The Athletic's David Ornstein, spoken to NBC Sports in January 2023, prior to Manchester City's clash against Chelsea in the Premier League.

The esteemed journalist is delineating the high-profile transfer situation surrounding Arsenal's long-term interest in exciting winger Mykhailo Mudryk, who had been in awe-inspiring form with Shakhtar Donetsk in his homeland, and scored in Saturday's recent draw.

Sky Sports, however, revealed that free-spending Chelsea were considering entering the race for the coveted winger, and indeed ultimately snatched Mudryk from Gunners sporting director Edu's nose, signing the 22-year-old for a whopping £88.5m.

It was a moment of great poignancy at the time, for Arsenal, despite being firmly ensconced in first place in the division, had seen their prime target swiped by a Blues side who, for all their lavish opulence, were flattering to deceive, moored in the middle of the league table.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

Hindsight so often proves to be a wonderful thing, as the adage goes, and the Ukrainian would contribute to the woes at Stamford Bridge with just two assists and no goals from 15 appearances during the 2022/23 English top-flight season.

Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, was relishing in the success of a transfer of a far shrewder nature, securing a £27m deal for Brighton & Hove Albion forward Leandro Trossard on the 21st of January, bolstering a fluid frontline with a Premier League-proven and dynamic player.

Trossard had been a crucial part of Brighton's ascendency over recent years, and proved to be a stroke of genius on Arteta and Edu's part, outshining his Chelsea counterpart considerably.

Impressive last season, the Belgian has been crucial this year and has already popped up with some massive moments to keep the squad on track, and he may well be the unsung hero in a squad bespecked in first-class quality.

How good is Leandro Trossard?

After posting 25 goals and 14 assists from 121 appearances for Brighton, Trossard joined the Arsenal fold with sights set on improving the ranks and increasing the depth amid a captivating title race against Manchester City.

And while Arteta's side agonisingly came up short, the £90k-per-week ace's involvement certainly aided the club in its exploits, especially given Gabriel Jesus' knee injury hampering his role across the latter half of the campaign.

Bagging a goal and ten assists from just 11 league starts after his transfer, Trossard has been a revelation and has opened up a new dimension to keep the team ticking.

This year, he has flipped the switch somewhat and harnessed his innate striking instinct, plundering four goals and an assist from eight matches so far, starting on just four occasions.

Scoring the winner against Everton and the equaliser against Chelsea last weekend, his capacity to pop up in decisive phases is part of the reason Arteta swooped for his services.

The first of those showings came off the bench against Manchester City in the Community Shield, where his goal in the late stages took the match to penalties, which Arsenal won to set the tone for the campaign. And it's so far so good.

Trossard ranks among the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues and European competitions over the past year for assists made per 90, as per FBref, with his performances leading broadcast journalist Buchi Laba to brand him as a "creative machine".

This level of attacking ability is exactly what Arsenal need in their fight to take their progress up a notch this year and win either the Premier League or Champions League trophy.

Lofty ambitions, but such is now requisite at the Emirates Stadium; Arteta has instilled the correct mentality and the club is reaping rewards of this renewed quality.

Praised for his "perfect" start to the season by pundit Pat Nevin, the 28-cap revelation has been remarkable, no doubt, and in a very different way, and could be the manager's new star ahead of Declan Rice.

How is Declan Rice performing for Arsenal?

Rice's future was subject to much discussion in the build-up to the transfer window; everyone wanted a slice, but Arsenal had always been in pole position and they shrugged off late advances from Manchester City to secure his signature in a £105m move in July.

Since the summer, he has made 12 appearances and scored twice in the Premier League, and the fact that his goals came against Manchester United and Chelsea underscores his value and pedigree in the biggest moments.

Rice ranks among the top 20% of midfielders for goals, the top 21% for passes attempted, the top 19% for pass completion, the top 20% for progressive passes, the top 16% for progressive carries, and the top 8% for interceptions per 90.

Hailed as a "force of nature" by journalist Rob Blanchette for his exploits with West Ham, the England international is now thriving at the heart of one of Europe's most formidable outfits, very much capable of steering the club over the line in the search for silver-laden success this year.

And while he is the obvious example of how Arteta has strengthened his side over the past few transfer windows, Trossard's is the kind of capture to go somewhat under the radar amid the flood of exorbitant activity that dominates the market.

Where once Arsenal were the river that trickled into the sea, now they are the sea that flows into the river, creeping closer and closer still to a team of dominance at the forefront of European football.

There's a distance still to travel until Arsenal do indeed perch alongside the behemoths such as Real Madrid and Manchester City, perenially touted as the all-conquering units, but with signings such as Rice's bolstering the fold, the framework for lasting success is established.

The tough-tackling, turbo-charging midfielder is indeed paramount to Arteta's vision, but Trossard is the man to make the difference in key phases.

Arsenal will not always decimate the opposition, flaunt their attacking impetus and establish early leads to settle the nerves of the anticipating support, and components such as Trossard really do tip the odds in the London club's favour.

Hailed as a "magician" by writer Hayley McGoldrick, the 5 foot 7 phenom offers the multi-functionality to serve his title-chasing side in their endeavours.

The taste of silverware has already been handed to this Gunners side, salvaged through Trossard's late strike against Pep Guardiola's team in the dying embers, and with the interminable journey to the end of the campaign still in its early phase, you would not bet against this big-game star's pivotal part in the exploits yet to come.
