Sky Sports: Everton In Talks To Sign £20k-p/w "Diamond"

Everton are back in discussions regarding a deal for Leeds United forward Wilfried Gnonto, and a fresh report has revealed his club’s stance on allowing their prized asset to complete a late move to Merseyside.

What is the latest Gnonto transfer news?

The Toffees have already seen several approaches rejected for the left-winger, and despite The Telegraph later claiming that Premier League rivals Burnley had joined the race to secure his services, the 19-year-old has only ever had his heart set on Goodison Park.

As per Fabrizio Romano, the Italy international previously agreed personal terms with the Blues, and for a short spell, he was refusing to play in order to try and force a transfer through, with the relationship with his club being described as “completely broken”.

At Elland Road, Gnonto currently pockets £20k per week following his move last summer from FC Zurich, and having impressed during his 31 senior appearances so far, he appeared to emerge as a priority target earlier in the window for Sean Dyche.

Are Everton signing Wilfried Gnonto?

According to Sky Sports’ Transfer Centre, Everton “remain in talks” with Leeds over a deadline-day deal for Gnonto.

The Merseysiders have made the attacker “one of their primary targets” for the remainder of the window and have “not given up” on getting him over the line before the end of play tonight.

The Whites star previously handed in a transfer request expressing his desire to leave, but as it stands, Daniel Farke’s side are certain that he is “not for sale”.

How many goals has Wilfried Gnonto scored?

During his time at Leeds, Gnonto has racked up nine contributions (five goals and four assists) in 31 outings at first-team level, which shows how much of a positive impact he can have in the final third – and even though the ball might not be regularly hitting the back of the net, he poses a constant threat to an opposition's backline.

The Verbania native, who is sponsored by Puma, has so far recorded six shots this season, which is the joint-second-highest in the squad, (via FBRef).

He also loves to take on his marker as he currently averages 2.5 dribbles per game in the second tier – a joint-high alongside Luis Sinisterra.

Farke’s “diamond”, as labelled by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, is also a versatile operator having been deployed in seven different positions since the start of his career, including everywhere across the frontline and three roles in the midfield, so he could be a great option for the boss to have at his disposal if any areas needed covering due to unexpected injuries.

The West Yorkshire outfit are in a strong negotiating position when it comes to Gnonto due to him having another four years remaining on his contract, but with Alex Iwobi set to travel to Craven Cottage to undergo a medical ahead of his proposed £22m move to Fulham, Everton should have sufficient funds to put towards signing his replacement.

Mitchell Marsh puts country before IPL

The allrounder has chosen to strive for greater effectiveness as a Test batsman by linking up with the former Australia batting coach Michael Di Venuto at Surrey

Daniel Brettig01-Jan-2018Mitchell Marsh doesn’t know exactly how much money he will lose by playing county cricket rather than the IPL this year. But if the fruits of the decision are more innings like his two contrasting and valuable efforts in Perth and Melbourne, Marsh will happily accept the deficit. In 2016, Marsh was signed for AUD 1 million (INR 4.8 crore) by Rising Pune Supergiant in the IPL auction, and was likely to fetch an even higher price this year. However in 2018 he has chosen to strive for greater effectiveness as a Test batsman by linking up with the former Australia batting coach Michael Di Venuto at Surrey. There is of course the knowledge that as a top-tier Australian cricketer, Marsh stands to earn plenty of money in the long term. The county stint is part of a holistic approach to building a Test career that has also featured plenty of work with a personal batting coach in Scott Meuleman, plus taking the advice of Justin Langer, Darren Lehmann and his father Geoff among others. By Marsh’s own admission his return to the Test team arrived ahead of schedule, but that has only provided greater motivation to stay on his chosen path.”It was a fairly big decision from a money point of view but my ultimate goal is to play Test match cricket for Australia,” Marsh said in Sydney. “That’s the lure of the IPL – the money and playing in India, but I made the decision based on my cricket.”When I made that decision I didn’t really think I was going to be back there this quickly. But I’m really looking forward to the opportunity to play 14 red-ball games over there – if I can, and try and improve.”Looking forward we’ve got a lot of cricket coming up in England over the next few years and I want to give myself the best opportunity to be over there and get used to the conditions.”Di Venuto saw Marsh’s struggles with the moving ball at first hand during the 2015 Ashes series, when his hard hands and tendency to throw them at the ball after pressing instinctively forward made him tender prey for James Anderson and Stuart Broad. In this series Marsh has already shown an ability to play the ball more comfortably under his eyes, and wants to continue down that path.”I certainly understood that [I needed to adapt better] when we went there for the Ashes a couple of years ago,” Marsh said. “Playing in their conditions for a whole summer, I’ll get flat wickets, I’ll get wickets that seam and swing. hopefully I’ll be able to come up with a gameplan to deal with that.”Diva’s there, Michael Di Venuto is the coach and he was our batting coach for three years. I’ve got a really close relationship with him and I feel it’s a great place to bat, which is my main priority going over there.”I spoke to Boof [Darren Lehmann] about it, spoke to Justin Langer about it – and obviously my old man. They all said it was a good idea but ultimately the decision was mine and I’m very happy with it.”Also a source of happiness was the way Marsh handled the mental hurdle of batting for survival in Melbourne rather than looking overtly for runs. While the flatness of the MCG pitch and the cool head of the captain Steven Smith at the other end helped, Marsh still had to grind it out – and overcome early nerves.”I said to him [Smith] as we were walking off that I was proud,” Marsh said. “Probably the biggest thing I was most happy about it is that 12 months ago with my mental side of my game I probably don’t think I could have got through that. While I know it was the flattest wicket in cricket history, to apply myself for that long and not really care about scoring is something I’ve gained a lot of confidence from.”I think I’ve said it for a couple of weeks now, I’ve been a lot more relaxed with this preparation when I came back to the Test team. I knew the gameplan I’d have to go out there with and it was about sticking to that for as long as we needed to get the draw.”There’s always nerves. I was very nervous, I felt like I was going to get out any ball in the first 20 balls, which can happen on those sort of wickets when it’s reversing. I felt really confident in my game plan once I got in, that I was able to do the job.”One of the sore points of the recent MoU dispute between Cricket Australia and the players was that numerous top players were offered multi-year deals in exchange for missing the IPL. Marsh’s example has proven that personal improvement is as great a motivator for making the same call as any contractual blandishments.”I’ve worked extremely hard over the last nine months to make sure I have a game that can adapt to all conditions,” he said. “I realise I’ve only done that now in two Test innings and have a long way to go, but I’ve certainly gained a lot of confidence from the last few weeks.”

Aston Villa in pole position to sign the "new Bruno Fernandes" for Emery

Aston Villa are leading the race to sign a new attacking superstar from overseas, and a fresh report has shared details of where the two parties currently stand in negotiations.

What's the latest transfer news at Aston Villa?

Unai Emery had a busy summer transfer window, bringing in a total of five fresh faces, with Moussa Diaby joining permanently from Bayer Leverkusen, Pau Torres from Villarreal, Nicolo Zaniolo and Clement Lenglet both signing on loan and Youri Tielemans on a free transfer from Leicester City.

In terms of outgoings, Cameron Archer, Jaden Philogene-Bidace, Marvelous Nakamba, Keinan Davis, Ashley Young, Wesley, Philippe Coutinho, Morgan Sanson and Viljami Sinisalo all sealed exits on either a temporary or permanent basis, leaving room for the boss to bolster his ranks in January.

One of the players to have been linked with a move a number of times in the past is Sporting CP’s Pedro Goncalves, with the left-winger having previously been the subject of enquiries from the side in the Midlands.

Whilst reports suggested that the top-flight side walked away from a deal for the 25-year-old due to the €80m (£68m) release clause included in his contract, Correio Da Manha have since claimed that the club remain interested in a future swoop for the Portuguese sensation, with further details on the board’s pursuit having now emerged.

Are Aston Villa signing Pedro Goncalves?

According to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo (via Sport Witness), Aston Villa are “particularly” the club in pole position to sign Goncalves, despite him receiving other “approaches” from the Premier League.

NSWE, Monchi and Emery are in “ongoing” contact regarding a deal for the attacker.

Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are also “attentive” to his situation, though having seen a bid turned down over the summer, the Villa Park outfit appear to be taking a second bite of the cherry.

Sporting CP forward Pedro Goncalves.

How many goals has Pedro Goncalves scored?

During his time at Sporting CP, Goncalves has racked up a remarkable 93 contributions (59 goals and 34 assists) in 133 appearances for Ruben Amorim’s side, so should he put pen to paper at Aston Villa in the near future, it would be a massive coup for Emery.

The Jorge Pires client has continued his impressive form this season having so far whipped a total of 24 crosses into the opposition’s box which is more than any of his fellow teammates, alongside having 12 shots himself which is the second-highest tally at the Jose Alvalade Stadium, via FBRef.

The Vidago native, who has been nicknamed the “New Bruno Fernandes” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, is also flexible in where he plays having been deployed in six different positions since the start of his career, including three roles in the final third and three in the midfield, so his versatility would be another fantastic attribute for the boss to have at his disposal.

Finally, Goncalves knows what it takes to compete and be successful at the highest level having won four trophies with his current club, not to mention the individual recognition he’s received on the international stage having been named Portugal’s Player of the Season in 2021.

Sayers reveals Sussex interest with eye on 2019 Ashes

The swing bowler may have problems getting a work permit due to not having played for Australia but would likely enjoy English conditions

Chadd Sayers, the Australian swing bowler, has emerged as a potential signing for Sussex.Sayers revealed on the radio show in Adelaide that he was hoping to sign for the club in the coming days with a view to gaining experience of English conditions ahead of the 2019 Ashes tour. While it is unclear how Sayers would qualify for a work permit – he has not played international cricket, does not receive a central contract from Cricket Australia and is not a regular member of the Australia squad – his interest to Sussex does make sense. Not only would his style of bowling probably prove highly potent on early-season English wickets, but Chris Jordan and Jofra Archer are unavailable due to their IPL commitments and Jason Gillespie, a new addition to the Sussex coaching staff and the Adelaide Strikers coach, has seen a good deal of Sayers in action in Adelaide, where he plays his first-class cricket. A first-class bowling average of 23.56 is testament to Sayers’ control and skill.Sussex would only confirm that they are looking “at a number of options for the early part of the season” and insisted “nothing has been confirmed.”In other county news, Allan Donald has finally been granted the work permit which will allow him to take up the role of assistant coach at Kent. Donald, who has as British wife and has previously coaches with both England and Warwickshire, was due to join the county for the 2017 season but was unable to gain the required permit as his Level 2 coaching qualification was deemed inadequate. He has subsequently gained the required qualifications and been granted the work permit. He is in Antigua with the first team squad involved in the Regional Super 50 competition.Meanwhile, Hampshire are understood to have won the fierce competition to sign Sam Northeast, whose relationship with Kent has deteriorated since he expressed his reluctance to commit his future to the club.

Arsenal: Gunners could dominate the UCL by unleashing £90k-p/w ‘magician’

Arsenal are set to make their long-awaited return to Champions League football on Wednesday, bringing up huge questions about who Mikel Arteta might choose to start in this all-important fixture…

Who could start for Arsenal in the Champions League?

Having suffered a stuttering start to their Premier League campaign, despite remaining unbeaten with four victories from their opening five games, the weekend's win over Everton ended a torrid run of form at Goodison Park as the Gunners overcame huge obstacles to surpass their stubborn hosts.

However, the clash was largely marred by Gabriel Martinelli's 24th-minute injury, who pulled up with a hamstring qualm just after seeing his neat finish chalked off for a marginal offside. Arteta would claim: "He felt something in his hamstring and we need to do some further tests to assess if there is any big damage or not but he will be out for tomorrow’s game, that’s for sure."

Such a huge blow throws that left-wing spot completely up for grabs, with a number of stars likely set to have their eye on earning a start in this massive clash.

leandro-trossard

Emile Smith Rowe will be one vying for the place, whilst there is every chance that Gabriel Jesus could be pushed out wide to allow Eddie Nketiah to retain his striker spot.

However, the far more viable option would be to employ their match-winner from that aforementioned match, where Leandro Trossard made himself the star as he came off the bench to finish off a fine team move.

How good is Leandro Trossard?

When the Belgian was chosen to replace Martinelli after his injury, it immediately showcased where he stood in the pecking order. So, to see him score the winner, that place was arguably solidified.

From a short corner, which the north London outfit had been trying all game on Merseyside, a few intricate passes forged the 28-year-old an inch of space, where he struck a stunning left-footed effort in off the far post.

Such a moment of magic should come as no surprise to anyone though, as despite not quite lacking the dynamism and speed of the man he replaced, he remains the "magician" that writer Hayley McGoldrick branded him.

The former Brighton and Hove Albion wizard would prove that throughout last term too, as he shared his outstanding talents across two Premier League clubs without slowing down.

Moving in January, he would score eight and assist a further 13 in the league alone, with his instant impact at the Emirates nearly upholding their title charge that would ultimately fall short.

The £90k-per-week ace was further showcased as a true talent with his underlying figures, as he recorded a further 1.3 key passes and 1.5 shots per game, via Sofascore.

Given they are likely to come up against another team looking to frustrate them again tonight, such technical prowess could actually prove more impactful than Martinelli might have done.

After all, when compared to other wingers across Europe, the 28-cap creator ranks in the top 1% for assists per 90.

Trossard has more than enough quality to unlock most defences, having come up at key moments already with big goals. The hope will be that he can score arguably the biggest of his career to earn Arsenal an emphatic win on their triumphant Champions League return.

'Boots up! Thank you!' – Pietersen calls time on playing career

Batsman bows out ahead of Pakistan leg of PSL, to bring end to colourful and controversial playing career

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Mar-2018

Kevin Pietersen has had many retirements – including this one in the Big Bash•Getty Images

Kevin Pietersen, one of the most brilliant and divisive cricketers of his generation, appears to have called time on his playing career with a four-word update to his 3.65 million Twitter followers.Pietersen, who had declared in February that this season’s Pakistan Super League would be his last tournament, tweeted “BOOTS UP! Thank you!” to his fans in the wake of what seems to have been his final appearance for Quetta Gladiators on Thursday night.Pietersen’s returns in the tournament were underwhelming as Quetta finished fourth in the table to earn themselves a play-off berth – he made 7 from six balls against Islamabad United in that final innings, and managed just one half-century in eight innings all told – albeit an explosive 52 from 34 balls against Karachi Kings. But now, with the tournament shifting to Pakistan for two Eliminator matches in Lahore before the final in Karachi on March 25, Pietersen has joined his fellow England cricketers, Eoin Morgan, Alex Hales and Jason Roy, in opting out of travelling to the country for security reasons. At the age of 37, Pietersen’s enthusiasm for the hard graft of competitive cricket has been visibly waning in recent months. He warned that he was “nearly done and dusted” during his stint with Melbourne Stars during the Big Bash, and prior to his departure for the PSL, he posted an emotional farewell to his family on Instagram, adding that “this evening is the last one I’ll ever have to do.”Pietersen added a further update on his Twitter feed on Saturday morning, which appeared to cement his decision. “Just been told that I scored 30000+ runs which included 152 fifty’s & 68 hundreds in my professional career,” he wrote. “Time to move on!”Though he has shown glimpses of his enduring class in his recent engagements, it is plain that the passion has ebbed away from Pietersen’s game – and flowed increasingly into his new love of rhino conservation, for which he is an increasingly committed spokesman. He is having a house built near Kruger national park in South Africa, and used two of his final appearances, for Surrey in last season’s NatWest Blast and Melbourne Stars in the BBL, to promote the cause with fund-raising “Rhino Days”.Pietersen leaves the sport as England’s second highest run-scorer across all forms of the game combined, including 8181 runs in 104 Tests between 2005 and 2013-14, until he was sacked in a dispute over team ethics in the wake of a disastrous 5-0 drubbing in that winter’s Ashes. The acrimony of Pietersen’s split with England clouded the final years of his career – not least because the ECB’s selectors have, arguably, never yet found an adequate replacement for him in their Test middle order. But Pietersen’s greatest hits will endure long after the bitterness of the latter years has faded. Foremost among the memories will be his unforgettable maiden Test hundred at The Oval in 2005, with which England secured the most absorbing Ashes contest of all time; his Man of the Tournament display in the Caribbean in 2010, when England won the World T20, their first and, to date, only ICC global trophy; and his central role in England’s series wins in Australia in 2010-11 and India in 2012-13.Michael Vaughan, Pietersen’s captain during that 2005 Ashes, led the tributes on Twitter. “Well done @KP24 on an fantastic career,” he wrote. “Not everyone’s Cup of Tea but you will do for me … Best Batsman I had the pleasure to play with … 1st England batsman that put fear into the Aussies .. #WellDone”

As duas equipes voltam a campo nesta quarta-feira.
