Insider Drops Behind-Scenes Transfer Claim At Newcastle

Newcastle United will be going into the summer transfer window with just £75m to spend on new arrivals, according to some reports.

What is Newcastle's transfer budget?

The Toon will go into the new campaign with Champions League football on the menu having secured an impressive fourth-place finish.

Alongside the increased revenue from the elite European competition, Newcastle have also secured a new sponsorship deal with a Saudi-based company.

It is believed Newcastle will now earn around £25m from their shirt deal with the Saudi Arabian events management firm.

However, despite the expected spike in the club's revenue, there have been reports suggesting PIF will only provide the Toon with around £75m to spend over the course of the summer.

The prospect of playing European football may mean Eddie Howe will need to bolster his side with more quality and further strength in depth.

However, a £75m budget may not provide Newcastle with much room for improvement in the window considering they spent £63m on Alexander Isak last summer alone.

Speaking on the Chasing Green Arrows YouTube channel, insider Graeme Bailey has slammed the notion of the Toon having so little to spend this summer:

"Sorry, but I'm not I'm not buying it. Newcastle are sending out these stories. I think Newcastle will easily then spend over a quarter of a billion this summer. I really do. I don't see them not.

"They've already briefed that they want a left-sided forward, a number 10, another central midfielder, a left-back and a centre-half."

Who will Newcastle sign this summer?

The Toon have already got the ball rolling this summer with the addition of the young prospect Yankuba Minteh who has been brought in from Odense.

Reports claim the 18-year-old has cost the Toon in the region of €7m (£6m) but will be sent immediately out on loan to the Dutch champions Feyenoord.

If reports surrounding the £75m transfer budget are to be believed, then there will only be around £69m to spend over the coming months on improvements.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe.

Of course, departures will add potential revenue to the budget, however, the quality of player who may be on the move this summer may not provide Howe with much money to play with.

But now the Toon are in the Champions League, it is apparent Bailey is not convinced the finances will be so restricted this summer.

Newcastle fared well this season and capitalised on the struggles of the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

It has to be expected those three sides will come back next season stronger and the two London sides do not have to compete in any form of Europe at all.

So a stronger squad will surely be on the agenda for Howe this summer and quality signings will also be a huge boost as they prepare to take on some of Europe's very best.

Celtic Preparing Approach To Sign "Valuable Asset" For Free

Celtic are preparing to contact the agent of Leicester City defender Daniel Amartey ahead of a potential move to the Scottish Premiership, according to reports.

Is Daniel Amartey leaving Leicester?

The Ghana international has clocked up a total of 145 appearances since arriving at the King Power Stadium from FC Copenhagen all the way back in 2016, but the upcoming window is set to present him with the opportunity to embark onto the next stage of his career.

The Foxes have publicly confirmed that the 28-year-old will leave the club as a free agent upon the expiration of his contract at the end of the month, and journalist Ryan Taylor has already backed him to complete a switch north of the border, where he would be a “valuable asset” to the dressing room.

The Hoops recently announced the return of Brendan Rodgers in the dugout following the departure of Ange Postecoglou so the Northern Irishman will be entering the market to find his first signing of his second spell in charge, and the centre-back could be just the man he’s looking for.

Are Celtic signing Amartey?

According to TEAMtalk, Celtic have placed Amartey under “strong consideration” to be the first fresh face walking through the doors since Rodgers signed. Leicester’s veteran has already been “talking” to clubs over in Turkey whilst he’s also attracting “interest” from Saudi Arabia, but there is a “chance” that he could join the Bhoys, who are “ready to contact his agent”.

Leicester City defender Daniel Amartey.

Celtic will know that Rodgers holding a strong existing connection to Amartey from his time at Leicester, and alongside the fact that he would cost literally nothing to recruit, he seems an ideal target.

The World Cup participant averaged 3.5 clearances and 1.7 aerial wins per top-flight game last season, not to mention that he had a 91.3% pass success rate, via WhoScored, highlighting his calmness and composure on the ball when clearing the danger from his area.

Amartey, who will know what it takes to be successful having secured six trophies since the start of his career, would also be a great option for the manager to have at his disposal with his ability to be deployed in four various positions in both defence and midfield, so a reunion wouldn’t be a bad idea for Rodgers.

Faulkner ton helps Tasmania hold on for draw

Set an unlikely 415 for victory, Tasmania played out a draw against New South Wales in Hobart by reaching 4 for 266

James Faulkner scored his maiden Sheffield Shield century and his second in first-class cricket to help Tasmania bat out a draw on the fourth day against New South Wales in Hobart. Set an unlikely target of 415 for victory, Tasmania’s hopes faded even further when they fell to 4 for 81 on the final day, as Trent Copeland and his bowling colleagues ran through the top order. But Faulkner and Beau Webster settled in for 72.1 overs for an unbeaten 185-run partnership, and if their stand didn’t look like delivering Tasmania to their target, it at least prevented New South Wales from romping to victory. After the Blues declared on 5 for 495 in their first innings and rolled the Tigers for 209, a draw would have seemed an excellent result for Tasmania.Faulkner struck 12 fours during his 222-ball innings, which was his longest in first-class cricket, and he arrived at triple figures late in the day. His only previous first-class hundred had come for Lancashire in county cricket last year, and in this match he bettered his previous best Sheffield Shield score of 89.Webster ran out of time to push for what could have been a third first-class century, finishing unbeaten on 80 from 214 deliveries. Copeland finished the match with eight wickets but Man of the Match was Peter Nevill for his unbeaten 179 and five catches.

Pakistan mull picking Asghar as second spinner

Pakistan are looking at left-arm spinner Mohammad Asghar as a second spinner for the Sydney Test on a track that has traditionally been spin friendly

Osman Samiuddin in Sydney02-Jan-20173:28

Samiuddin: Pakistan could go for two spinners

Left-arm spinner Mohammad Asghar could be in line for a debut in the third and final Test against Australia at the SCG, as Pakistan actively consider the option of playing two spinners. The Sydney surface has traditionally been good for spin and is likely to be this year as well. Australia, with one eye on their tour of India, have already named two spinners in their XI- Nathan Lyon and Steve O’Keefe.Asghar, who will become the first Balochistan-born cricketer to play a Test match if he debuts, was called up to the squad initially as a back-up for Yasir Shah after the legspinner pulled up with a back injury ahead of the warm-up game in Cairns at the start of the tour.On tour, he has impressed Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq, a man not easily impressed by spinners. Misbah spoke in unusually glowing terms of Asghar’s left-arm spin in private and did so publicly on Monday.”I’m really impressed by his bowling,” Misbah said. “I’ve seen his temperament [at the Pakistan Super League] that was massive for him, big tournament. The way he handled pressure there. They used him in the circle against some of the most destructive batsman in the world.”He bowled with a lot of control and courage. The way he’s bowling in the nets, he’s been tremendous. Even some of the best players of spin, they really rate him up. He’s the one you can trust anytime.”Asghar came to national attention with Peshawar Zalmi in the PSL in February 2016, where he took 11 wickets; he has since evolved and on a Pakistan A tour of Zimbabwe in October, was the second-highest wicket-taker in the four-day matches. As captain, Misbah has traditionally opted for two specialist spinners in his playing XI in the UAE and switched to one outside of Asia. Until 2015, Mohammad Hafeez provided a handy offspin option outside Asia. If they do play two spinners in Sydney, it would be the first time Pakistan will do so outside Asia since a Test in Harare in September 2013, when Saeed Ajmal and Abdur Rehman played.Mohammad Asghar trains on the eve of the third Test in Sydney•Getty Images

“It can be an option,” Misbah said. “It all depends on the final look of the pitch, how it comes up on the last day especially, before the start. It’s not that if Australia have got two spinners then we have to also put two spinners. It’s about how to think about the conditions and how we can strengthen our team. We’ll definitely go for it if we think that this pitch is going to do a little bit for the spinners on the last day.”According to the SCG curator, the pitch should do a bit, provided the weather holds up and there is some sun – the forecast isn’t great, with sporadic showers and cloud cover over the next few days.”You’re going to see pretty much a traditional SCG pitch,” Tom Parker said. “The SCG always traditionally spins. That’s been the nature of the beast here for many years. All of our games this season… we’ve seen a fair bit of turn.”Another spinner may also ease the burden on Yasir Shah, who has struggled not only with conditions but with the lines that he has bowled, or been asked to bowl. So far, Yasir has bowled 94.1 overs in the two Tests, for six wickets, and conceded over four runs an over.If Asghar does get picked, it will also be the first time in 20 years that Pakistan have played two spinners in a Test in Australia. The last time it happened was also in Sydney, in December 1995; Mushtaq Ahmed and Saqlain Mushtaq took 11 wickets between them in Pakistan’s last Test win in the country. One factor that will not influence the selection is Pakistan’s slow over rate. They have been punished for slow over rates three times in their last four Tests. “You don’t make strategies for slow over rates,” Misbah said. “You obviously want to have a combination that you think can win the game. That is our priority and if we think it is a 3-1 [three pacers, one spinner] pitch, definitely we will go for that. We have to improve in changeovers.”

Man United Could Land Big Varane Upgrade In £51m Swoop

Brazil defender Gleison Bremer could be exactly what Manchester United need to take the next step as they seek to make improvements on the season just passed.

Erik ten Hag enjoyed a relatively successful first season in charge of Manchester United after his move from Dutch giants Ajax last summer.

The 53-year-old tactician won the League Cup by beating Newcastle United in the final at Wembley earlier this year and qualified for the Champions League with a third-placed finish in the Premier League.

He now has an opportunity to bolster his squad in the summer transfer window with a view to achieving greater success – hopefully in the form of more silverware next season.

One area in which the Dutchman is seemingly interested in strengthening is in the heart of his defence. Calcio Mercato recently reported that the club are keen on Juventus ace Bremer, who would cost at least €60m (£51m).

Who is Gleison Bremer?

The 26-year-old centre-back has been an excellent performer in Serie A and someone who could be an outstanding addition to United's squad ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

He could be a dream upgrade on current defender Raphael Varane based on their respective performances last term, and that is why Ten Hag must push to complete a deal for the Brazilian ace.

Bremer averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.11 across 30 league outings for Juventus in 2022/23 and showcased his defensive quality with 2.3 tackles and interceptions per game, alongside 1.63 blocks per 90.

Juventus central defender Bremer.

Varane, meanwhile, averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.85 across 24 Premier League matches and made 1.5 tackles and interceptions per outing to go along with 1.05 blocks per 90.

These statistics indicate that the Serie A battler has the ability to perform at a higher level on a consistent basis whilst being able to make more vital defensive interventions to stop opposition attacks each game.

Whilst the obvious emphasis is – and should be – on their ability to prevent goals, Bremer would also come in and provide a threat at the top end of the pitch.

The Juventus titan, who was once hailed as "unbelievable" by journalist Ryan Taylor, ranks in the top 1% of centre-backs across the Men's top five Leagues and European competitions for non-penalty expected goals (npxG) and expected assisted goals (xAG) combined per 90 (0.20) over the last 365 days.

He ended the 2022/23 campaign with 4.9 xG and 1.7 xAG, which resulted in four goals and one assist, and could offer far more than Varane, who was not directly involved in any league goals for United last term, while averaging just 0.05 combined non-penalty xG and xAG per 90 over the last 365 days.

Therefore, Bremer could be a big upgrade on the current United stopper in terms of the level of quality the 26-year-old talent is able to provide in both boxes.

Arsenal Could Secure "Special" £41m Stones Clone

Arsenal could be set to tie up their latest transfer of this busy summer window, according to reports…

What's the latest on Jurrien Timber to Arsenal?

The latest on Mikel Arteta's pursuit of Jurrien Timber is detailed by Fabrizio Romano, who took to Twitter to update fans on the Gunners' progress. It seems like the completion of such a deal is just around the corner.

Detailing in a short tweet, the Italian journalist would write: "Jurrien Timber deal, now at final stages as revealed earlier. But no medical has been scheduled yet and there are still some details to clarify between clubs. Looks like a matter of time and then Mikel Arteta will have one more top signing."

This added to a prior announcement, in which he suggested a fee of around €48m (£41m) had been submitted by the north London outfit, who are doing all they can to close the gap to Manchester City.

Could Jurrien Timber copy John Stones?

As a ball-playing centre-back, there are few across Europe as technically gifted in his role as Timber. However, unfortunately for Arteta, one of those few features under Pep Guardiola.

John Stones captured the imagination last season with his mesmeric work in advancing the play, as his Spanish boss even sought to employ him in a midfield role as an inverted full-back to maximise these talents.

He recognised the elite skillset the 29-year-old boasted and made the necessary changes to elevate the England international to new levels. He starred in the heart of a side that would go on to claim a famous treble, winning the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League.

As per FBref, it was clear to see that such a tactical shift was destined for success. When compared to other centre-backs across Europe, he ranked in the top 10% for passes attempted, the top 4% for pass completion, the top 12% for progressive passes and the top 8% for progressive carries.

This helped him maintain a 7.03 average rating in the league, in which he offered another calming and controlling presence beside Rodri in the engine room.

Having not been afraid to copy his former mentor on occasion, given his current philosophy greatly resembles the revolutionary style of the former Barcelona boss, Arteta could now be set to secure his own version of Stones through Timber.

After all, the Netherlands international actually ranks in the top 1% for all of the aforementioned categories when compared against the same group. He would be more than capable of operating in a similar role, with Rafael van der Vaart even noting: "Timber is so quick, light feet, always sharp, never panicking on the ball. Almost like a great midfielder in defence."

john-stones-everton-manchester-city-everton-pep-guardiola

It should come as no surprise to see the 22-year-old also branded a "special, special talent" by journalist and U23 scout Antonio Mango.

As a couple of technically-exceptional defenders, both with the physicality to compete at the highest level too, the Gunners could once again emulate the success of their rivals in the hope it can push them even closer to the levels needed to truly end their monopoly over English football.

Tahir muscles in to take IPL spotlight

Imran Tahir claimed career-best figures of 5 for 24 in South Africa’s victory in Auckland, in a timely audition before the IPL auction

Firdose Moonda17-Feb-2017

Imran Tahir with his Man of the Match award•AFP

With a career-best 5 for 24 to underline his No. 1 ranking in both limited-formats, Imran Tahir seems to have everything he could want at the moment, except maybe one thing.”I wish I could have muscles like him,” Tahir joked, the day before the one-off T20 against New Zealand in Auckland. The person Tahir was referring to was Sonny Bill Williams, the New Zealand rugby player, boxer and signature bad-boy-turned-good, who is a close friend of Hashim Amla. Amla introduced Williams to Tahir and other team-mates including Wayne Parnell two years ago and they make a point of catching up when they’re in the same country, and Tahir is still in awe of Williams’ superstardom.”When I first met him I was shaking because we were walking on a street in Auckland and I could see people’s reaction and I was blown away,” Tahir said. “He stopped for everyone and took pictures. I’ve never seen someone who’s that famous.”Cricketers in South Africa seldom get similarly swamped, not even when they are dominating internationally the way Tahir is, and he knows that a more imposing physique will not change that. “I’m happy with what I am – I’m not jealous of him,” Tahir clarified, amid some giggles. Imagine a Tahir with bulging biceps and thunder thighs.Jokes aside, Tahir’s body will soon come up in discussions about how much longer he will be able to play. He turns 38 next month and has been playing cricket at a high level for two decades but has managed to avoid major injury. Being a spinner, whose action does not cause as much wear and tear as a quick bowler’s would, he is thought to have at least another two to three years, although he has suggested he could keep going for between five and ten. That doesn’t seem so outlandish when considering that Tahir has stayed fit and become more athletic and agile in the field than he was when he first emerged on the international scene.Tahir’s dedication to his craft has only increased as his career has progressed. He maintains that having waited so long to play for South Africa – Tahir moved to the country in the mid-2000s but only become eligible to play for them in 2011, when he was 32 – he wants to hold on to it for as long as he can.And there is maybe one other thing. The IPL auction takes place in three days’ time and this T20 was a last audition for some of the players looking to get deals – though Tahir insisted it was only a passing thought to him. He was released by Delhi Daredevils and has a base price of US$75,000, which is just short of a million South African Rand.Given how well Tahir has been performing recently, he is expected to fetch more than that. So while he may not have the muscles, he could soon boost his earnings by more than a million in one day.
