The Barmy Army, a group of travelling England fans, has said it will not be following the team on tour in Bangladesh owing to prevailing security concerns. A statement on the group’s website said that while the BCB had taken an interest in improving security for fans, the “measures do not yet go far enough to persuade us to go against FCO (Foreign and Commonwealth Office) advice.”The development came two days after England ODI captain Eoin Morgan and opening batsman Alex Hales said they would not be travelling to Bangladesh either, despite the ECB saying the tour would go ahead, following an assessment of the security measures in place.”Behind the scenes we have been liaising with the ECB and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and have now received advice from the latter,” the Barmy Army said. “We have been supplied with a list of hotels in Dhaka and Chittagong that will receive protection from the Bangladesh Police and been told that England supporters will be afforded their own segregated area within the stadium.”However on the issue of escorts to and from stadiums (where due to local traffic conditions supporters will be most vulnerable to attack), we have been supplied with the contact details of a private security company, the implication being that any extra security will have be at supporter’s own expense. Whilst we are grateful that the BCB are taking an interest, we feel these measures do not yet go far enough to persuade us to go against FCO advice.”It is a matter of great regret that we feel unable to endorse travel to Bangladesh. Those of us lucky enough to have visited this country on previous tours have lasting and fond memories of a warm welcome, friendly locals and wonderful food. Perhaps the greatest pleasure being able to mix freely with the general population, particularly in and around the stadiums. We were also able to wander and explore the teeming cities of Dhaka and Chittagong without fear. FCO advice specifically warns against such activities.”The concerns over security for England’s tour of Bangladesh began after Dhaka, the nation’s capital, suffered a terrorist attack in July that left many dead. Australia had also cancelled their tour to the country at the end of last year and had pulled out of the Under-19 World Cup this year due to security concerns.

The Tripura Cricket Association (TCA) and the Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) have become the first full members of the BCCI to adopt the recommendations of the Lodha Committee, in separate special general meetings held on September 29 and 30 respectively. This development could affect the BCCI, which has been resolutely opposing the Lodha Committee’s recommendations and had failed to meet the first deadline of September 30. The board could not reach a decision at an emergent special general meeting on Friday and will reconvene again on October 1 to discuss the issue. On Thursday, the TCA had “unanimously” decided to amend its constitution in accordance with the recommendations of the Committee appointed by the Supreme Court. In an email to the Lodha Committee, TCA secretary Sourav Dasgupta said: “The house after discussions passed a resolution unanimously to implement the recommendations made for state association by the Supreme Court committee and a proposed draft of amendment made and passed for further necessary action with Register of Societies, Government of Tripura, under Registration Act, 1860.”Then on Friday, at the VCA’s SGM in Nagpur, 727 out of the 730 members voted in favour of a new constitution in line with the Committee’s recommendations. The VCA, in a media release, had stated that the sole item on the agenda for the SGM was to “consider and approve” the proposed new constitution of the Association as per the recommendations of Lodha Committee. “Total 730 votes were polled out of which 727 voted in favour of the proposed amendments whereas 3 members voted against the amendments,” the release said. “Therefore the proposed amendments to the Constitution of VCA were passed by a thumping majority.”The release stated that members had asked VCA president Prakash Dixit why the new constitution was being adopted when the BCCI and most of the full members had been resisting the move since the Supreme Court’s ruling in favour of the Committee’s recommendations on July 18.”After detailed discussions on the issue it was unanimously decided that the recommendations now having been approved by the Supreme Court the same are binding on us and whether right or wrong, whether we agree or disagree we have to respect the decision of the Honorable Supreme Court and implement the recommendations,” the VCA said.A new executive committee of the Vidarbha association will be elected by November 15, the deadline set by the Lodha Committee, and the new administration will conform to the rules and the eligibility criteria specified by the three-member panel. The new VCA executive will comprise the president, a vice-president (previously two), a secretary, a joint secretary (earlier two), a treasurer, five executive members (earlier seven) with one member elected from the clubs (earlier five).”The criteria for an Office Bearer or the member of the managing committee / Executive committee or to the selection Committee will be as per the recommendations of the Lodha Committee,” the release stated. “Those who have attained the age of 70 years or declared insolvent or of unsound mind, or holds any post in any other sports or athletic association or federation and also those who have completed nine years in office for a cumulative period of 9 years will be ineligible to hold any post in the association. Further a Minister or a government servant will be ineligible to hold any post in the Association.”The executive committee will also include a male and a female cricketer nominated by the players’ association, and a nominee from the state accountant general’s office. The men’s. women’s and junior selection panels will be trimmed from the existing six selectors to three, as recommended by the Committee. The VCA has also decided to hold its annual general meeting during the first weekend in December going forward.

Liverpool Preparing £30m Offer To Sign Midfield "Warrior"

Liverpool are preparing to make an offer to bring Barcelona midfielder Franck Kessie to the Premier League, according to reports.

Who is Franck Kessie?

The Ivory Coast international first arrived at Camp Nou from AC Milan last summer and has made a total of 43 appearances during his debut season, but despite his contract not expiring for another three years, he could already be set to depart.

The La Liga star only made seven league starts under Xavi during the previous term and was limited to largely substitute appearances having been brought off the bench on 21 occasions, as per WhoScored, so he’s significantly out of favour in the senior first-team.

The Blaugrana currently have ongoing issues with Financial Fair Play that need resolving so they are expected to cash in on some of their valuable assets during the upcoming window, and the 26-year-old appears to be one of the first on the chopping block.

Are Liverpool signing Kessie?

According to Spanish outlet Sport (via The Daily Mail), Liverpool are “set to make a bid” of £30m in an attempt to secure the services of Kessie this summer. Barcelona view the midfielder as “one of the possible options” that they could get rid of to help aid their money problems and the Reds are “willing” to table the specified amount above to bring him to Anfield to join Jurgen Klopp.

Barcelona midfielder Franck Kessie.

Liverpool will know that Kessie hasn’t been given a fair chance to prove what he’s capable of this season, but having previously been dubbed a “warrior” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Barcelona’s central midfielder could be a player worth taking a risk on.

The Champions League participant posted six goal contributions (three goals and the same number of assists) across all competitions last term and ranked in the 88th percentile for number of touches in the opposition’s penalty area by central midfielders, showing how he gets forward and impacts the game in the last third.

The Ouragahio native, however, is also strong in the defensive aspect of his game having won 60 per cent of his attempted tackles over the course of the previous campaign so isn’t afraid to get stuck in, commit to challenges and win back possession for his team.

Finally, Kessie would add wonderful versatility to Klopp’s squad having operated in five different positions since the start of his professional career, including four roles in the centre and even at centre-back, so he would be a great option for the manager to have at his disposal on Merseyside.

Tottenham: Spurs Now Make "Serious" Defender Bid

Tottenham Hotspur have made a "serious offer" to sign Galatasary centre-back Victor Nelsson this summer, according to reports out of Turkey.

Who could join Spurs this summer?

The 2023 summer transfer window is now officially open for business, presenting Spurs with an opportunity to strengthen and undergo an arguably needed overhaul.

Ange Posteocoglou faces the huge task of transforming the north Londoners back into a major Premier League force, coming after they fell short of both winning silverware and securing European qualification last season.

Many players could depart N17, with Hugo Lloris, Ivan Perisic, Davinson Sanchez, Ryan Sessegnon, Clement Lenglet, Eric Dier and Ben Davies having all been tipped to potentially leave. Meanwhile, Tottenham are also planning to offload the likes of Giovani Lo Celso, Sergio Reguilon and Harry Winks (The Telegraph).

In terms of incomings, Spurs are actively scouring the market for goalkeepers, leading to serious links with Brentford's David Raya among others.

Tottenham have also been tipped to potentially sign a new midfielder, like Leicester's James Maddison, and Postecoglou has apparently given the green-light to capture a centre-back.

For the latter position, Man City's Aymeric Laporte and Wolves defender Max KIlman have been mentioned as targets, but the Turkiye Gazetesi has some interesting news on Nelsson.

victor-nelsson-tottenham-transfer-news-opinion-premier-league

The Denmark international, who appeared for his country in Qatar at the World Cup last year, is attracting interest from Spurs and the newspaper claims they have made a "serious offer" for him.

Tottenham apparently informed Galatasary that they're willing to pay £16 million excluding bonuses for Nelsson, but there is an "expectation" they may need more – specifically around £19 million.

The defender's contract contains a £21m release clause, so Spurs may need to come closer to this figure if they wish to prise him away from Turkey.

Who is Victor Nelsson?

The report describes Nelsson as a "successful" first-teamer for Galatasary, and his stats from the 22/23 season certainly back that up.

The 24-year-old was selected over more Turkish top flight minutes than any other memeber of Okan Buruk's squad last campaign, highlighting his real importance to them (WhoScored).

In that time, Nelsson averaged more blocks per 90 than all of his Galatasary teammates in the league, all whilst also winning the highest number of aerial duels per match (WhoScored).

While he is arguably yet to be tested in a more demanding division like the Premier League, it is clear that Nelsson has been a star for his club, with Tottenham seemingly well aware.

Players, umpires cleared of fault in Hughes' death

The New South Wales coroner has released the findings of his inquest into the death of Phillip Hughes

Brydon Coverdale03-Nov-20163:52

Brettig: ‘Hughes inquest findings could change cricket’

The death of Phillip Hughes was a tragic accident arising from a “minuscule misjudgement” from the batsman and no players or umpires were at fault, according to the New South Wales coroner Michael Barnes.Mr Barnes on Friday released his findings from the coronial inquest into the death of Hughes, who was struck on the neck by a bouncer during a Sheffield Shield match at the SCG in November 2014. Although the coroner determined that Hughes had been targeted by bouncers during his innings, he found that no laws of the game had been breached, and Hughes was well-equipped to deal with such bowling.”Phillip was targeted by short-pitched balls bowled at or over leg stump or middle stump that placed him in greater danger of being struck,” Mr Barnes said. “Of the 23 bouncers bowled on that day, 20 were bowled to him.”However, in view of the evidence of the other players, the presiding umpires, and Mr Taufel [former umpire Simon Taufel], that Phillip was, because of his high level of skill and confidence, comfortably dealing with the short-pitched balls, I conclude that no failure to enforce the laws of the game contributed to his death.”Such was his skill and experience, he was well able to deal with such bowling, but even the best can’t perform perfectly all of the time. He could have avoided the ball by ducking under it, but such was his competitiveness, he sought to make runs from it.”A minuscule misjudgement, or a slight error of execution, caused him to miss the ball which crashed into his neck with fatal consequences. There is absolutely no suggestion the ball was bowled with malicious intent. Neither the bowler, nor anyone else, was to blame for the tragic outcome.”Inquest recommendations

Recommendation 1: Cricket Australia review dangerous and unfair bowling laws to eliminate anomalies, and provide umpires with more guidance as to applying the laws
Recommendation 2: CA continue research and development to find a neck protector that can be mandated for use in first-class matches
Recommendation 3: Daily medical briefings at SCG to ensure a clear process in case of any emergencies occurring on that day
Recommendation 4: Training of umpires to ensure they can summon medical assistance quickly

The coroner also said that while it was hard to believe that no sledging had occurred during the match, the evidence suggested that Hughes’ confidence and composure were unaffected by any such sledging. However, while Mr Barnes made no finding as to whether sledging had occurred, he hoped that cricket would use the opportunity to reflect on whether such tactics were appropriate to the game.”Hopefully the focus on this unsavoury aspect of the incident may cause those who claim to love the game to reflect on whether the practice of sledging is worthy of its participants,” he said. “An outsider is left to wonder why such a beautiful game would need such an ugly underside.”The coroner found that independent medical evidence had established conclusively that the injury suffered by Hughes was “unsurvivable”, regardless of the efficiency and skill of the emergency response. However, he also noted that there were failings in the emergency response on the day which might have prevented Hughes receiving life-saving treatment, had his injury not been so serious.”None of those on the field at the time knew how to summon medical assistance onto the field,” the coroner said. “Although it was immediately obvious that Phillip was injured, it was not clear whose responsibility it was to call an ambulance. An ambulance was not called for over six minutes after he was hit.”The person who called the ambulance did not have sufficient information to enable an accurate triage to be made by the ambulance dispatcher. As a result, the ambulance response was given a lower order of urgency than it would have been given had the relevant information about Phillip’s condition been conveyed.”Mr Barnes also said that the ambulance service was given inconsistent information regarding how to gain access to Hughes, and that important medical equipment was not immediately at hand at the ground. However, he noted that some changes had already been made to emergency medical response procedures as a result of Hughes’ death.”Not that anyone involved was lackadaisical or cavalier, rather the systems in place to respond to such an incident were inadequate,” he said. “Unless addressed, those failings could result in a preventable death occurring… All of those who responded to Phillip’s injury did so selflessly and to the best of their ability. They are to be commended.”Mr Barnes also found that, although Hughes had not been wearing the latest model of helmet at the time he was struck, even if he had been wearing the most modern equipment then available, it would not have protected the area of his body where the blow landed. He concluded that Hughes’ death was “a tragic accident”.”The family’s grief at losing their much-loved son and brother was exacerbated by their belief that unfair play had contributed to his death,” he said. “In the course of this inquest they have heard from independent experts, high-ranking cricket officials and some of the players who were on the field with Phillip when he played his last game of cricket.”Clearly, they do not agree with all that they heard. However, it is hoped that they accept the compelling evidence that the rules were complied with; that Phillip was excelling at the crease as he so often did, and that his death was a tragic accident.”Nothing can undo the source of their never-ending sorrow but hopefully, in the future, the knowledge that Phillip was loved and admired by so many and that his death has led to changes that will make cricket safer will be of some comfort.”Later in the day, the Hughes family issued a statement saying that they accepted the coroner’s findings. They also said they hoped the changes made to the game, in order to make it safer, as a result of their son/brother’s death would become part of his legacy.”[Father] Greg, [mother] Virginia, [siblings] Jason and Megan accept the coroner’s findings,” the statement said. “They have noted the four recommendations made by the coroner, and Cricket Australia’s commitment to implement them. They are deeply hoping that no other family has to go through the pain of losing a loved one on an Australian sporting field.”As the coroner has noted, Phillip’s death has led to changes that will make cricket safer. The Hughes family hopes that this will be part of Phillip’s legacy to the game that he loved so dearly. They would like to sincerely thank the many people who have been in contact throughout and since the inquest.”David Warner, one of the witnesses who gave evidence at the inquest, stood by his testimony despite Barnes’ conclusion that he found some of the players’ versions of events “hard to believe”.”I’m happy with my testimony. The umpires said the same thing, that there was no sledging out there, and I’ll stick to my word that there was no sledging out there,” Warner said. “And I think we have to respect what they handed down and respect what their thoughts are as well, and us as cricket and Cricket Australia our thoughts and respects are still with the Hughes family.”Warner said he did not think seriously abusive sledging or threats to kill, as alleged at the inquest, were an endemic problem in the sport. “If I go back four or five years, when I used to dish it out a bit, yeah, maybe,” he said. “I think at the end of the day we’re all adults and when we’re on the field we know what line not to cross, and whether you’re touching the player or you attack them personally, banter and sledging is about trying to create energy.”You’re talking to your team-mates and no direct threats to any player, that’s totally gone. I don’t even know if that was in the game. I’ve never been pointed at and said any words of any malice, for us it’s just normal banter. It’s not really sledging if you want to say it. I don’t think there’s any in the game at the moment at all.”

Cremer's 102* helps Zimbabwe avoid follow-on

Graeme Cremer struck his maiden test ton to resuscitate a faltering batting effort and help Zimbabwe avoid the follow-on on the third day in Harare

The Report by Nikhil Kalro31-Oct-2016
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsGraeme Cremer struck his maiden Test ton to lead Zimbabwe’s recovery•Associated Press

A fantastic rearguard effort from Zimbabwe’s middle and lower order, led by Graeme Cremer’s maiden Test ton, helped the hosts avoid the follow-on and post 373 after they had slumped to 139 for 6 in the morning. Peter Moor put his wicketkeeping woes behind him to contribute with an 84-ball 79 and Donald Tiripano struck a composed 46.Cremer, batting at No. 8, played an attritional Test innings, waiting for anything overpitched. He received plenty such deliveries and drove elegantly to accrue seven of his ten boundaries through mid-off and extra cover. His timing was superlative and placement impeccable, important requisites for boundary scoring. The highlight of Cremer’s innings was his discipline with straight-bat strokes, even if the ball was short or wide. He milked the spinners, particularly with the spin to long-on or square on the leg side.On 58, Cremer was dropped at backward square leg by Asela Gunaratne. Other than that opportunity, Cremer looked impregnable with a tight defense – bat close to body, head over the ball and a good judgement of which balls to play at and which to leave. Such was his fluency that his hundred never looked in doubt as long as he didn’t run out of partners. Suspense arose around the ground when he needed No. 11 Chris Mpofu to block out one delivery from Rangana Herath.Graeme Cremer on…

His hundred: “It has not sunk in yet. When play began, we wanted to get past the follow-on score, that was the main thing for us. But then, after I got fifty-sixty, I thought there could be a chance here and it just was my day today. We were struggling a bit in the morning and just to get us back into the game, that was a big thing for me.”
Zimbabwe’s plan for day four: “We ideally want to slow the game down a little bit. We’ll go with in-out fields tomorrow; we don’t want them to score too quickly and then we have too much time to bat, because we think that tomorrow the wicket might get quite tough to bat on.”

Moor was more selective in his choice of shots, opting to loft the spinners straight as opposed to opting for cross-bat strokes. He used his feet effectively and hit the slower bowlers through the line in the arc between long-off and long-on. When the bowlers compensated with a shorter length, the cut shot was productive. He reached his fifty off 49 balls, thereby forcing Herath to dispatch fielders to the boundary. At one point, Herath had five deep fielders off his own bowling.Just when Moor looked set for his maiden Test ton, debutant Lahiru Kumara worked him over with a pair of outstanding bouncers on a slow pitch. The first, directed at the neck, caused Moor to fend awkwardly. The ball lobbed over slip for four. Two balls later, another well-directed bouncer accounted for Moor. The ball ballooned up off the glove and gully raced in to complete a low catch, Kumara’s first Test wicket and Sri Lanka’s only one of the session.Kumara continued to trouble the batsmen with extra oomph in a testing spell. Cremer survived a nasty moment when Kumara’s bouncer hit and subsequently detached his helmet, which fell perilously close to the stumps. He added 92 with No. 9 Donald Tiripano, who was equally adept at keeping out the straight deliveries and accumulating runs against Sri Lanka’s tiring spinners. Against the run of play, Tiripano missed a straight one from part-timer Kusal Mendis – it was Mendis’ first wicket in first-class cricket.Despite the lower-order fightback, Sri Lanka still retained control of the Test. They would have been pleasantly surprised with the conditions that greeted them on the third morning. After the Harare surface offered nothing to seam or spin on the first two days, it started to behave differently. Variable bounce, pace and enough lateral movement for the seamers helped Sri Lanka run through Zimbabwe’s middle order in a five-wicket morning session.Overnight batsmen Tino Mawoyo and Hamilton Masakadza began the day with staunch defence, even with low bounce evident from the second ball of the morning. Mawoyo was uncertain against the short ball on the second evening, and Suranga Lakmal exploited that weakness by repeatedly employing the bouncer. Some flew off the surface, some looped to the keeper. In the fifth over of the day, a bouncer hustled Mawoyo for pace and an attempted pull resulted in a top-edge, which was taken by square leg placed halfway to the boundary.Sean Williams and Craig Ervine, Zimbabwe’s best batsmen, were visibly disconcerted by the bounce and chose to sweep Rangana Herath. Both batsmen struck boundaries but the stroke was always fraught with risk on this pitch. Williams attempted a hard sweep off Herath but the ball bounced extra and took the leading edge, which was snaffled at deep square leg. Zimbabwe had lost their third wicket of the day inside 12 overs, the second off a top edge.Dilruwan Perera capped an excellent morning for Sri Lanka with two lbws, both non-turning offbreaks. Ervine missed a straight delivery, his pad interfering with the bat’s contact with the ball. Malcolm Waller went back to what he thought was a long-hop, but the ball skidded on and beat his pull.
