Spurs’ Romero branded crazy by Giroud

Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has been identified by Olivier Giroud as a “crazy” player following the Champions League clash on Wednesday night.

Is Cristian Romero a problem at Spurs?

The Lilywhites saw their hopes of silverware for the 2022/23 campaign come to an end on Wednesday night when AC Milan progressed as a result of their 1-0 aggregate lead.

However, the task was made slightly more complicated for Spurs in the second half when their Argentinian defender was shown a second yellow card for a reckless challenge.

This is something which has followed Romero from his time in Italy and it is apparent the 24-year-old is failing to grow out of his trait of ill-discipline on the pitch.

Speaking to CBS Sports, Giroud was asked by Jamie Carragher whether the Spurs defender was more “crazy and aggressive” than himself having played against Giroud in the past, to which the Frenchman replied:

“That’s a good question. No, we didn’t play much against each other, I think, so I would say him [Romero].”

Can Spurs rein in Romero’s issues?

It is apparent that Romero has been a positive signing on the whole for the north London side, with the 24-year-old impressing massively in his opening campaign last season.

Carragher said towards the back end of last season that Romero was his best new player for the 2021/22 campaign and had high praise for the World Cup winner:

“But I think maybe with Romero being my position, I remember watching him at Man City this season, I thought there’s something special about him.”

However, he has arrived in north London with a huge flaw in his game with his lack of discipline really starting to cause Spurs some problems.

In just over one month, Romero has been shown red cards in crunch games against Manchester City and AC Milan, while the game Romero missed last month as a result of his suspension saw the Lilywhites ship four goals to a struggling Leicester City.

Having put his side at risk on Wednesday night with Spurs in need of a goal to take the tie into extra time, he put himself out of the next round had Spurs qualified past Milan.

Prior to the World Cup break, Romero had been shown just one yellow card in his eight league appearances, so he has shown he is capable of keeping his discipline.

But his recent displays have shown a real reckless spell in his game and it is surely something Spurs want to rein in.

Diogo Jota expected to stay at Liverpool

Liverpool are expected to retain the services of forward Diogo Jota beyond the end of the summer transfer window, according to a new update.

The Lowdown: Jota linked with exit

The Portuguese burst onto the scene at Anfield when he joined from Wolves back in 2020, immediately becoming a key attacker and scoring nine Premier League goals in his first season.

The last year or so has proven to be extremely frustrating for Jota, however, having not scored since the 2-2 draw at Manchester City last April, suffering with multiple lengthy injury problems.

At same the time, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo have both become important players and made competition for places stronger, arguably pushing the 26-year-old down the pecking order.

Jota has looked out of sorts since returning from injury, struggling in Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat to Real Madrid, and some reports have even linked with him an exit from Liverpool this summer.

A new update has now emerged, however – one that u-turns from the rumours of a pending departure.

The Latest: Expected to stay

According to Football Insider, Jota ‘remains a key part of Liverpool’s plans’ moving forward and the club do not have any intention of moving him on, despite the ‘suggestions’ otherwise.

Any attempts from other clubs to snap up the forward would be ‘flatly turned down’, according to the report, with Jurgen Klopp seemingly considering him a key figure still.

His current deal at Anfield doesn’t expire until the summer of 2027, so a big bid would likely be needed to prise him away.

The Verdict: Still an important figure

There is no question that Jota’s performance in the past 12 months have been worse than they were when he joined – no goals this season is a testament to that – but selling him would be a mistake, given the quality he possesses.

The 29-cap Portugal international has scored 34 goals and registered 15 assists in 101 Liverpool appearances, as well as being hailed as ‘exceptional’ by Klopp.

Injuries have been a massive reason for Jota’s struggles, allowing him no rhythm whatsoever and affecting his sharpness, and if he can just enjoy a run in the team from this point onwards, there is no reason why he can’t help drive the Reds to a top-four finish.

Granted, he may not be a nailed-on starter moving forward, given the competition for places in Liverpool’s attacking ranks, but he has done more than enough to prove his worth in the past three seasons, and at 26, remains a relatively young footballer.

Wolves to listen to offers for Ruben Neves

Wolves have reluctantly accepted the “huge blow” of losing star midfielder Ruben Neves this summer, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Neves to leave?

The Portuguese’s future has been a big talking point at Molineux for some time now, with endless rumours constantly linking him with a move away from the club.

Neves looked almost certain to depart last summer but ended up staying put and his influence has remained great this season, with the 25-year-old starting 27 matches in the Premier League in 2022/23 to date.

His current Wolves deal expires at the end of next season, however, and with an extension looking highly unlikely, it seems only natural that he will leave in the next transfer window.

That way, Wanderers would be able to receive a hefty amount of money for his services, rather than getting nothing for arguably their most prized assets 12 months later.

The Latest: Wolves accept ‘huge blow’

Speaking to Give Me Sport, O’Rourke admitted that this summer will likely see Wolves cave and receive offers:

“Losing Neves would be a huge blow for Wolves. He’s been a key player for them over the last few years.

“Coming into the final year of his contract, if no new deal can be agreed, I think Wolves will reluctantly have to consider offers for the Portuguese midfielder.”

The Verdict: What a great servant

In truth, it would be a huge shock if Neves was still a Wolves player next season, with a summer exit feeling even more likely than it did last time around, when he appeared to wave goodbye to supporters on the final day.

At 25, the 37-cap Portugal international will surely feel that he is ready to play for a bigger club competing in European competitions, having given six years of fantastic service to Wanderers.

In total, Neves has made 244 appearances for Wolves and helped inspire them to a return to the Premier League back in 2018 – if they were to go back down to the Championship, his exit would be even more nailed-on.

The midfielder has earned a move to a Champions League-playing team, with Barcelona so often linked with signing him – Jose Sa has called his teammate an ‘amazing’ player – and he can become a star away from Wolves as the years pass.

It would be hard for any Wanderers fan to have an issue with him wanting to leave, especially given the loyalty he has shown over the past six seasons.

Conor McGilligan reacts to possible Leeds injury blow

Presenter and YouTuber Conor McGilligan has been reacting to a Leeds United injury to defender Max Wober.

The Lowdown: Early substitution

Wober, who arrived at Elland Road in January from RB Salzburg, was selected by Austria for their European Championship qualifiers with Azerbaijan and Estonia during the current international break. The 24-year-old started against Azerbaijan on Friday evening but had to be replaced before the interval with what appeared to be an injury.

Austria went on to win 4-1 but it has since been confirmed that the defender won’t feature against Estonia and will now return to Yorkshire for an assessment following a hamstring issue. The Whites are scheduled to return to Premier League action away at league leaders Arsenal next weekend, and it looks as if it could be touch and go for Wober due to his injury.

The Latest: McGilligan reacts

McGilligan, presenter of One Leeds Fan Channel, took to Twitter on Saturday morning to react to Wober’s injury. He seemed frustrated, saying:

‘Went down with no one near him – literally would be our luck.’

The Verdict: Fingers crossed

Javi Gracia has already been dealt an injury blow before the international break with Tyler Adams, who was sent to see a specialist with his own hamstring injury sustained in training, so losing Wober for an extended period of time would be another setback as the club continue to battle to remain in the Premier League.

The defender has been a regular alongside Robin Koch following Gracia’s arrival, featuring in every minute in the last four fixtures. He impressed prior to the international break against Wolves, with Leeds fans naming him as their man of the match on LeedsLive, while pundit Tony Cascarino also named him in his team of the week.

Gracia also seems to be a fan of Wober alongside Koch, with the head coach hailing the duo following his first game in charge vs Southampton.

“In my opinion, both centre backs played really well today. “They had a tough challenge. As you say with a very tall player and all the defensive line was very concentrated and the good work of the team meant we got a clean sheet.”

Therefore, Leeds will be hoping that his injury isn’t too serious, especially with two crucial home fixtures against Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace on the horizon, games which could have a big say in the club’s push for survival.

Everton: Alex Iwobi may not sign new deal

Alex Iwobi may reportedly now not sign a new contract at Everton, leaving his future in doubt.

The Lowdown: Contract offered

Iwobi has reportedly been offered a new deal by Everton, but he has not put pen to paper on it as of yet.

As such, a number of clubs in the Premier League are thought to be keeping an eye on the situation, as they weigh up a potential move this summer.

The Latest: May not sign…

As per Football Insider, the Goodison Park outfit are ‘confident’ that Iwobi will sign a new contract, but he is not expected to put pen to paper on it until at least the summer, as he has ‘doubts’ over whether they can avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Discussions are ‘advanced’, but it is thought that Iwobi’s head could be turned by a concrete offer in the summer.

The Verdict: Worrying

It will be certainly be worrying for Toffees supporters to hear that Iwobi is having doubts over his future, which could depend on relegation as a distinct possibility with them only two points above the drop zone.

The Nigeria international has really turned into a key player for the team, with former manager Frank Lampard lauding his development as ‘brilliant‘.

Indeed, Iwobi has not missed a game in the league so far this season, and his fine form has continued under Sean Dyche, as he is currently the highest assister in the squad and has averaged more key passes per game than any of his team-mates (WhoScored).

The £120,000-per-week maestro will not want to be playing in the Championship though, and so the Blues must make sure that they stay up come the end of the campaign, where talks over a new deal should become a lot easier.

Man United Must Drop "Ineffective" £240k-p/w Star

Manchester United were brushed aside yesterday by Newcastle United, marking one of the more frustrating Premier League defeats they have suffered this season.

What made the dominant display even more frustrating was the fact that they were not outclassed; they were outfought.

In a post-match interview, Luke Shaw outlined exactly why he thought they fell to defeat: "I don't think they won the game on quality today, they won it on passion, desire, hunger, attitude, and they had higher motivation than us and that can't be possible.

"I feel I say the same things every time we lose. It's not acceptable. At Manchester United that can't be possible."

Although admittance of such an issue is all well and good, it is something which needs solving. The Red Devils cannot allow themselves to become embroiled in a battle for the top four, especially with their FA Cup and Europa League presence still crowding their schedule.

Erik ten Hag has to come to some solution to turn around this downturn in league form, and one shocking conclusion could be to finally ditch Bruno Fernandes.

How did Bruno Fernandes play vs Newcastle United?

It seems like ever since that embarrassing loss to Liverpool, the Portuguese midfielder has come under ever-increasing scrutiny for his decreasing level of performance.

Lambasted for a poor attitude at Anfield, and once again struggling to make an impact at St James', plenty sections of the media sought to once again showcase their frustrations, with journalist Thomas Alencar writing: "Bruno Fernandes was very out of touch and missed a lot of passes on the counterattacks."

This was supported by his statistics, where he lost possession 16 times and won just one of the six duels he competed in. This unsurprisingly culminated in his abysmal 6.4 rating, via Sofascore.

Fellow writer Thomas Hammond even suggested that the way in which the Magpies played had rendered the 28-year-old wholly "ineffective".

bruno-fernandes-manchester-united-newcastle-argue-referee

However, arguably the most scathing criticism came from producer Elliot Hawkins, who claimed he was: "Embarrassed to have Fernandes and Antony in my team."

Despite boasting 59 touches, the £240k-per-week playmaker's influence on the pitch was limited to attempting the impossible with unsurprisingly little success.

This was his second Sofascore rating of 6.4 or lower in his last three games and with high-flying Brentford and survival-seeking Everton to come, things do not get any easier.

Dropping him for the resurgent Scott McTominay perhaps, in the more offensive role that has seen him thrive for Scotland, could afford the Portuguese star some perspective as to the kind of levels he needs to maintain to retain his place in the side.

Chelsea’s "Wonderful" £160k-p/w Star Set For More Game Time

Chelsea striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could be set for more game time in the coming weeks, as he is thought of in high regard by Frank Lampard, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

Will Aubameyang leave Chelsea this summer?

Aubameyang arrived at Stamford Bridge from Barcelona last September, joining on a two-year deal, however, it appears as though his time at the club is set to be cut short, after failing to impress under Graham Potter.

The forward will "definitely" leave the Blues this summer, according to a recent update from Phillips, with Barca one of the clubs that are "pretty keen" on signing him, as manager Xavi never really wanted him to leave in the first place.

The Athletic has reported that Aston Villa could explore a move for the former Gabon international, meaning he is likely to have no shortage of offers this summer, however before then he could be set to come back into contention at Stamford Bridge.

Writing in a column for GiveMeSport, Phillips claimed that Lampard is a fan of the £160k-per-week attacker, and could give him increased game time in the latter stages of the season, with the Blues still competing for the Champions League.

The new manager is keen to give all the players at the club a fresh start, and he will not be afraid to give some more unknown players an opportunity.

Carney Chukwuemeka is also said to have caught the 44-year-old's eye since he's returned to Stamford Bridge, so it would not be a surprise to see the 19-year-old feature in the coming weeks.

Should Lampard start Aubameyang?

It seems a little unusual to start a player who is definitely set to leave at the end of the season, but Chelsea need some inspiration from somewhere, having failed to find the back of the net in their last three Premier League games.

In the 2-0 loss at home to Aston Villa, the Blues recorded 2.16 expected goals, but Mykhaylo Mudryk missed two big chances, with Kai Havertz also missing one, and they are in dire need of a more clinical goalscorer.

It has been hard for Aubameyang to put a good run together this season, making the majority of his Premier League appearances from the bench, but he has a fantastic record in front of goal throughout his career, scoring 11 in 17 La Liga games last season. He is currently rated as the second worst player at the club, according to WhoScored, which is 31st out of 32.

To stand any chance of winning the Champions League, Lampard's side need someone who can regularly convert chances, and at this stage, Lampard may as well give the 33-year-old, who Jurgen Klopp lauded as "wonderful", another opportunity to prove himself.

Dean Jones "Slightly Sceptical" About Tottenham Manager Target

Tottenham Hotspur's number one manager target should not be Burnley boss Vincent Kompany, journalist Dean Jones has recently told GiveMeSport.

What's the latest on Vincent Kompany to Tottenham?

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has recently clarified that Kompany will be a target for Tottenham this summer, saying:

"But on Vincent Kompany I already told you a few days ago and I'm still saying here that, from what I understand, he is one of the names considered by Tottenham for the future head coach for the long term project."

Spurs may have been handed a boost in their pursuit of the Belgian, as it has now emerged he is "ready to listen" to offers from the club, with chairman Daniel Levy said to be "blown away" by what he's seen in his first full season at Turf Moor (The Sun).

However, in a recent interview with GiveMeSport, Jones did not appear to be as convinced by the Burnley boss as Levy, indicating there are other names on the shortlist who would do a better job.

The journalist said: “I think it's logical that his name comes into the conversation given the way he has made a mark as a coach so far, and one good contact told me there is something in Spurs' interest. But as a number one target, I am slightly sceptical. He hasn't managed in the Premier League and he is currently employed. I can't see why he would be ahead of other targets that have a stronger CV."

Should Tottenham appoint Vincent Kompany?

The former Manchester City captain has done a fantastic job in his first season with Burnley, leading them to promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, and they are almost guaranteed to win the Championship title.

Vincent Kompany returns to Manchester City as his Burnley side visit in the FA Cup.

That said, Jones is right to point out that the 37-year-old has never managed in the top flight, which would make his appointment a risk when you consider the other options available, such as Mauricio Pochettino, who took charge of 353 games during spells with Spurs and Southampton.

Hailed as having "elite playing ideas" by sections of the media, Kompany is showing a lot of promise, and he could go on to be a top manager, however it is probably too soon for him to be offered a job at a 'big six' club, and Levy should focus on targets with proven experience managing at the top level.
